    Hope you guys enjoy today's video!
    To clarify: as many commenters have pointed out, Marie said she personally owns 30 books but encourages people to only keep books that spark joy for them. The purpose of this video was to try and help others to see that she's not bashing reading at all! She's just encouraging you to take a second look at what your have in your collection and if you really want to keep it. I hope this makes sense!

    I'm about to receive a copy of the Little Prince that has been printed on a machine more than 100 years old. They only made 250 copies and my name would be in it because I gave money for them to restore the printing machine that they used to print it. I can't wait. I've been waiting for it for 1,5 years but finally it's ready and they will start shipping out the copies next month. It will be one of my most prized possessions.

      ICaughtTheSnitch26 i found it funny as well that those who reacted strongly and negatively about Marie Kondo are those who haven’t read the book or watched the series. The series was basically a summary of the book. And not a good one at that. There were so many tiny details that I found really important that weren’t mentioned or explained in the series at all!

    I actually did do an unhaul after watching Marie Kondo on Netflix and it’s all about “does this make me happy” if not you would unhaul it. It’s the same method applied to clothes. And she does talk about doing a sentimental unhaul but it’s done separately because it’s so emotional and much harder to do. It’s basically organizing your space to make you happier.

    She actually just said that's about how many she has... it wasn't ever meant to be a suggestion for others but it's everywhere now... 😔 lol she's just not obsessed w/books. I mean I've met people who think even 1 physical book isn't necessary 😉📚📚 me, I'm building that personal library!

    • @AnimeEpisodesDutch
      @AnimeEpisodesDutch 6 лет назад +6

      Kelsey Myers I don’t think reading is not her thing, but the climate and space in homes in Asia is very limited/bad for books. That’s her main reason to not have too many books but the ones she really treasures. I think she mentioned that in an article when this meme started to blow out of proportion.

    • @kelsqi-books4835
      @kelsqi-books4835 6 лет назад +1

      @@AnimeEpisodesDutch I've never thought about that! Wow lol thinking about how tiny some of those houses are is a really good point.

    • @Jenbebookish
      @Jenbebookish 6 лет назад +2

      Kelsey Myers like in any situation, to each their own right?! Regardless of what # she may or may not have chosen, she also is consistent about her “if it doesn’t start joy, throw it out!” concept! For book lovers, each every and any book sparks joy! Also like Twinkie said, the space situation in Asian countries can dictate style trends. A library might be the last thing they need or want, but I’m like you! I’ll lug 50 boxes of books w/me every time I move, my own library (a la Beauty and the Beast) in mind!

    • @AnimeEpisodesDutch
      @AnimeEpisodesDutch 6 лет назад

      Kelsey Myers and you still would be surprised how much they can store in such a small space 😂 that is why guru’s like Marie Kondo became so big in recent years as hoarding stuff is a serious issue in Asia.

  • @_echointhevoid_
    @_echointhevoid_ 6 лет назад +53

    No no no, she said she personally likes to keep 30 books. Not that people should own no more than 30 books. She said you shouldnt get rid of books if it makes you unhappy.

  • @carolines1055
    @carolines1055 6 лет назад +28

    Marie kondo wants you to think about whether you want to keep something because you like it or it has a use for you OR if you are just afraid of feeling guilty after letting something go.
    I say this because the marie kondo method is often confused woth minimalism but it's not. It's about feeling comfortable with the amount of stuff you have and appreciate and cherish your possesions. Also she wants to convey that maybe someone else will have much more use or joy for that one item you give away. So you are not throwing things out but give it a new chance to become important to someone else.
    I don't think 30 is an attainable amount of books for book fanatics, but for the regular person it totally can be. And the important aspect is that it's not a must if you cherish and love all your 300 books so be it.

    The KonMari method completely changed my life. It was so liberating getting rid of a bunch of things I held on to that meant absolutely nothing to me. It was shocking to my family and some of my friends that I was throwing away so much, but I really don’t miss anything and I transformed into a much more organized person. Loved the video! ❤️

    I'm really happy Marie's influence is getting recognized. If only we could protect her from the backlash.. Her methods have changed my life drastically, I'm a pretty sentimental person but I was able to let go of so many things in life. I realize I get overwhelmed with clutter, now I'm trying to practice minimalism, and I couldnt be more happy. People should not take her words too critically, as she was just implying ways for us to declutter our lives, which is a must.

    Wow such a cool video idea! Wanted to tell you though, that there is an editing mistake just before you talk about radio silence, the strange and beautiful sorrows of Ava Lavender pops in right there but you end up actually talking about it lastly... Of course it is not a great problem for anyone watching but thought you might wanna know

    I only have about 60 books on my shelf and all are sentimental to me or to be read. I only keep books on my shelf after I’ve read them if I love them and they have sentimental value. All others get donated so others can read too.

    I know what you mean Hailey. I have a lot of books that have sentimental value for me. I just can't get rid of them.😍
    On a side note, I want to ask you a question. I read the book, "Looking for Alaska" and I don't understand that book. I understand what happened in the book but not in an in depth way. Can you explain this book to me please? I would really appreciate it

    Well, except manga, because there's no easy way to get digital manga in Spanish =/

    My 30 books are:
    1: Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
    2: The Resturant at the End of the Universe
    3: Life, the Universe, and Everything
    4: So Long and Thanks for all the Fish
    5: Bridge to Terabithia
    6: The Lovely Bones
    7: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
    8: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
    9: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
    10: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
    11: Wintergirls
    12: I am not a Serial Killer
    13: Fangirl

    15: The Knife of Never Letting Go
    16: The Ask and the Answer
    17: Monsters of Men
    18: Lord of the Flies
    19: Hamlet
    20: Macbeth
    21: Virals
    22: The Woman in the Window
    23: Angels and Demons
    24: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (BECAUSE I FIND IT VERY VERY VERY AMUSING - ITS STILL NOT CANON)
    25: Release
    26: The Casual Vacancy
    27: Aristotle and Dante
    28: The Frood
    29: Turtles all the way Down
    30: The Famous Five - Five on Treasure Island
    This list is not necessarily my top 30 favourite books, instead, I took the 'deserted island' approach and have tried to choose books from lots of different genres.

    I only have about 70-100 books, but even I would find it so hard to only keep 30. Even my Harry Potter books would take up 1/3 of 30, including my Cursed Child, Fantastic Beasts movie script and 20th anniversary edition. The Cursed Child sucks and I'd never read the movie script of FB, but both books are just so pretty and I wouldn't have the heart to get rid of them especially with the added factor of collecting all HP books.

    30 books for me - that would be impossible, because I'd have to keep the 30 books that I have personally signed by authors; but then there are other books by other authors that I love that haven't been signed and I couldn't keep them under this method.
    I guess the positive is, I did unhaul some books last year - still waiting to sell them, at market or ebay or whatever - but they're not on my bookshelf taking up space anymore!!

    I get rid of almost everything I read unless it’s 4.5 stars or more. If I didn’t have my good reads where I can shelf and review everything I have read, I think I would have a harder time getting rid of books. For some reason having the proof and my thoughts on every book, makes it manageable to toss most things I won’t read again.
