Great design and helpful explanation. I notice when the tarp rolls up, it has the roll on the outside. If I want the roll to be on the inside, I guess I just need to re erse the rope set up i.e. pull line on the inside, and fixed end of the line on the outside. Is that right? And do you have any comments on pros and cons of each approach? Thanks.
Planing to do this as curtains for my patio but think I may wrap the string around the pvc so it spins it tightly as it goes up. Hopefully it will work

I use it primarily as an outdoor work/storage shed. I've resorted to plan 'B,' which is to buy individual tarps to cover my lawnmowers and tools I store/use in my carport.
Wondering if the rope/cable causes any wear on the tarp itself. Was thinking of this idea for a wood shed enclosure at the lake. Awesome idea. Thx for sharing
Thank you, got a 12x16 lean to pavilion in Hawaii wet area planning something similar with threaded nursery tarps hanging from edge of the roof and mesh tarps flush to the structure, was thinking a wheel bolted to the ends of the pvc for a bit tighter roll, possibly capped filled with sand or dirt(free) for extra weight. Love some advice if anyone has 😅 thanks 🤙
I don't think you need a wheel. It rolls up perfectly as long as the pipe us straight.. The rope rolls it as you pull it up.. If doing again I would replace the pvc pipe with a metal pipe as he PVC pipe has bowed over time. Once it bows, it doesn't roll up tightly. A little heavier would be good but not too heavy. Maybe an aluminum pipe? Not sure as that may cost too much. I think adding sand to the inside of the PVC pipe would worsen the bow in the middle.

What size roughly are the pulleys and how many did you fit on yours ? What grade/type of cord would you suggest too and how much length? I've got integral pockets at the base of my tarpaulin so I can slide a piece of square timber or pipe through .Once again, brilliant engineering feat with yours!! Regards, Jerry.
Hello Jerry, I’m not sure of the pulley size. I used 1/4" diameter rope and pulley to fit. I think you would want no more than a 5' between pulleys. Make to use a round pipe or dowel in the bottom of your tarp so it will roll smoothly as you pull the rope. Good luck! Brad

Can Anyone help me out here. I need or want to do exactly what this man has done, however, I need the tarp to come up (or roll out) from the floor area. There are a number of important reason why, that I don't wish to get into, but this is what I need. Another example would be the top down bottom up blinds. I just used one cord which becomes two cords when I cut it. You need to take both ends of the cord through the first double pulley (left side where you pull to open) run both cord ends through the 2nd double pulley (middle pulley). Take one of the ends straight down the front of the tarp and back up the backside of the tarp and fasten to the header with a screw and washer. Then take the other end over through the single pulley (far right side), down the front of the tarp and up the back of the tarp. Fasten to the header board with screw and washer as shown in the video. Now you are done and you will have the looped end of the pull cord hanging. I cut it to length which leaves two cords hanging. I tied the two together.

I have an open carport and my shameless neighbor gets out of his car and comes into the side into my carport walks the whole length to get out again to his side. I am going to try this, a subtle hint "stay on your side"
I used a pvc pipe which is light. It will roll-up tighter if you use an iron pipe or if you use a lighter duty tarp. Have you actually made one? If so please share a helpful comment.
@@Mrbhoagie Had a new tractor shed built. The door is 9 ft high and 12 ft wide. I used a hd poly tarp. The vids from the far east showed the ropes on the outer ends of the pipe, acting as a winch to roll the pipe in turn giving a tight rolled up door. I wasn't happy the way the old ShelterLogic door operated, bunched up very badly when cold.
Pulling the string pulls the inner string up through the pulleys. This action causes the pipe to roll and since it is attached to the tarp, the tarp rolls around the pipe. The tarp and pipe roll up between the two strings, not on top of it.
I see in the video you mention securing the rope inside with screws I'm just trying to figure out where that rope is from? Maybe there is something I have missed in the video I think I realized what I missed now question is is the rope secured to the pipe at the bottom at all?

Yes , it will wear the tarp . Maybe not so much for his tarp because its cloth tarp but a plastic tarp would need a track of gorilla tape
3 years with no wear on the tarp. But the tarp has shrunk a few inches.

The pipe automatically roles the tarp up due to the outside string lifting up through the pulley.

Should have watched a few you tube vids on attaching the pull rope to the pipe, rolls up much tighter and neater.

So the abs pip is essentially jus rolling on top of the string?

I presume the bigger the diameter of the tube...the easier & faster it rolls up?

The one end of the rope is fastened to the header above the tarp then it goes down to the bottom of the tarp and up through the pulley.

The cord is not attached to the pvc. I fastened the pvc to the bottom of the tarp with screws and washers.
