Learn the incredible bass line on If You Want Me To Stay by Sly & The Family Stone (Rustee Allen on bass).
This was also covered by Red Hot Chili Peppers on the 1985 album Freaky Styley and I'll be mainly covering Flea's bass line.
I'll also show you how to improvise and make your own awesome bass fills up.

A classic Dan, thanks!
when i was helping my dad do sound in my teens i got to see rustee allen on wedding gigs occasionaly. Rustee has this cool way of playing songs where the bass is alive and moving, but isn't super busy. he's been really inspiring to me & He's really cool. We often talked about the bass genuis James Jamerson, he said his lines on "aint nothing like the real thing" were beautifuly played
Cool story!
Love it Dan. Brings back memories.
Thanks for sharing your improvising process for making fills.
There's an incredible live version from around the time Sly released this song where the bass player plays this descending chromatic line from the minor 7th and it's BEAUTIFUL
Must check that out!
Thank you, Mr. Hawkins.

Thanks, you too!
Amazing content, as always!
Much appreciated!
Great lesson as always, I like to stick to the frets 2 to 5 with strictly one finger per fret, then it becomes a very enjoyable exercise across the 4 strings!
Hi Dan , Thanks for the super lesson . I always learn so much with your videos . a suggestion for epic bass lines would have to include Whats the use by Mac Miller featuring thundercat on bass .
Thanks, Roger! ruclips.net/video/yvtnLLFuijI/видео.htmlsi=0T4QRFXZYs-kcG6k
Thanks Dan. Very good lesson. Lots to practice 😊
🙏
Wonderful lesson!
Thank you! 😃
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
You're simply the best! 🤓
Love that song!! 🙏
Thanks Dan! I love it when you break down great bass lines.
I’ve followed you for a while and was wondering, you never mention bass lines you’ve written for shows and other mediums. Are you not allowed to because of copyright or some other reason? Because that would be cool to hear. Like what inspired you, how you came up with them, etc. I’m sure you’ve written some great lines!
Thanks! I’ve been thinking of putting a video together about the process I use when recording remote sessions (which I’ve done for over 15 years now). Might revisit that idea soon!
Dan - your tone is killer in this video - just the sort of tone I want to produce and never seem to be able to. Have you got your bass running through anything or is it all tone knobs? Where are they set? could you tell me what amp you are using? (Sorry for all the questions - I have been struggling with tone for ages.) Thank you 🙏
Thank you! It’s very simple: no amp, bass straight into Avalon U5 into Logic Pro via UA Apollo 8. Old Elites Players 45-105 strings, bass up, treble down (on the onboard EQ). The 1978 StingRay has a lot to do with it.
@@OnlineBassCourses thanks for your reply. Good to know it might not be lack of technique!
Very thorough, thanks so much 🎉
I use brass nuts on all my bases and guitars, is that a brass nut on yours too ?
🙏🙏 aluminium I think… it was changed years ago.
Is this your favorite bass? :D
I have a 24ca and I absolutely adore it.
But it would need a Seymout Duncan 4a pickup.
Top 3 I reckon!
Dan can you check the tab in bar 4 ? It looks different than what your playing. Thanks
There are a few different ways it’s played/can be played so I wouldn’t worry too much about the TAB even if it’s different from how I played it. If it’s just a note here and there you can just use your ear and change the notes to what you hear. 🙏👍
Thanks and thanks for all you do !
@@jackjdolan My pleasure!
@@OnlineBassCourses Dan probably more info than you want but I believe he spelled his name Rustee but that's not important. After Sly and the Family Stone split Rustee and Sly's drummer Bill Lordan joined Robin Trower. Bassist/ Vocalist James Dewar moved out front on vocals only. Robin was trying to get a little funkier. If you listen to Somebody Calling you can hear this version of the band. Too much minuit detail ?
Great info! Yes, I'm spelling it "Rustee" too.
Dan this song is in F minor?
No. I mention it in the video - there are different versions. The RHCP one is in A Minor.
