As an elementary student, I got to play some in several of these gyms that were changed to elementary schools in the southeastern part of the state. Thank you for giving this Hoosier turned Sooner a great memory.
Medora high school. The picture of that gym is what I remember of the old classic gyms. Almost no seating at the court level with a balcony with seating around three sides of the court and a raised stage at one end of the court. Those kind of gyms gave you a view from above almost like the view you see on television. The close personal atmosphere of that style gym with a vocal crowd was an experience. When the game was hot, that house could really rock!
My mother’s old high school was torn down. My father’s high school is still standing. My old high school had a fire during my freshman year. The badly burned part of the school was the worst since it was made of wood and brick. Almost the entire school was torn down except for the gym, field house, the locker rooms, and the old band hallway. It was rebuilt from the ground up. I remembered touring the school after the fire in September before it was all torn down. The originally the school was 1 story when it first opened 1917. The school had add ons over the school’s history.
South Bend Central HS. 1907 last used as a school 1967. Now used as apartment building. Was for many years one of the top basketball and football teams in Indiana.
Luna Johnson I see nothing sad about it. It cost too much to maintain. There always comes a time to move on to something better. I bet you wouldn’t say it’s sad because I have to throw an old piece of clothing. Oh it’s so sad that I have to get new clothes. I say if people want to save these old buildings that they should do it with their own money and not tax payer money.
this is a great video that brings back vivid memories of my Hoosier days growing up in Covington when as 5th graders all we dreamed about was winning STATE. This was when Indy HS bball was still a one class system. A few gyms worth including in the next segment are Rockville (they still play in their original gym), Williamsport (an original gym where Seeger plays their home games) and I believe Covington still has the barn like structure from the original days but they play their games in a new gym. In any case, a great tribute video to what Indiana high school basketball used to represent and still does...family and community.
I went to the same high school as my great uncles that was built around the turn of the 20th century and their graduation pictures were on the walls. Now it has been gone for over twenty years. That was Boone Grove High School in Boone Grove, IN In the 1950's and 1960's there were many of those old schools still standing in rural northern Indiana now all gone that I know of. I graduated in 1965 with 34 in my class.
What a great tribute! I had forgotten what an awesome score Hoosiers had; great to see it used here. In addition to the Knightstown Gym, the attached former Knightstown High School is now Academy Place Apartments.
Thanks a lot for these pictures. Yes, my old school, Charlottesville High, is gutted now due to a fire years past, I have a couple brickes I 'stole' from it,, hope the owner doesn't mind, I'm surely not the only one whose done it. . But good to see it here before the fire. Graduated there 1962. Larry White,,Arlington,Texas.
What a fantastic compilation! Northside High School graduate, Fort Wayne, Indiana so I can absolutely appreciate these photos. I am in awe of Northside still today as I drive by her. I've lived amongst stucco in California for the past 40 years so I can really appreciate older structures more than most. My grandfather went to Milan High School and witnessed their win at the state basketball championship in Indianapolis - so I know where you're coming from.
I know there are alot of old schools missing but you can't forget Lebanon's Memory Hall. Hoosiers was filmed there. They played Jasper and I was under the scoreboard wearing a maroon sweater. Lots of memories.
The old New Haven High School (New Haven, Indiana) looks exactly like the school I attended (long gone now) when you see Gene Hackman standing in front of the shining waxed floors, old dark wood, sun gleaming; the gym was one of those that in the Winter would get hot inside (radiators and packed crowds)....you'd have to open some of the chain driven window cranks to get some cold air in there)......wow! the memories! NHHS 1971.
Wow It is wonderful that you made this video. I am from Indiana but now live in Fl I was watching for Center High School near Muncie. It was demolished in around 1967. Would have made a wonderful building for something. this is a sad video and you couldnt have chosen better music. Makes me very proud. thanks
I love seeing these kind of videos but it makes me sad sometimes, the old world was better.. and seeing everything change to line phones, to now outstanding technology is amazing..
I thoroughly enjoyed the video. I went to the Charlottesville HS when it was used as the Charlottesville Elementary (K - 6th grade). Our class was the last 6th grade class to be promoted from that building. Both the elementary school and the high school were relocated to property along 1050 East, next to I-70. It was a great time and a great place for friends and memories. Thank you.
Madison High School was later converted into a Junior High School until around 1972. A new beautiful junior high school was then built next to the high school on the hill. I think it is currently used for a Senior Center.I attended Madison Consolidated. Love your presentations. Thank you.
Not to worry! New Castle, Connersville, the Wigwam and others will be in the next one I'm working on right now. I've got a couple more places to visit before I'm finished. Hope to have it posted in a month or so.
2009 graduate of New Castle High School. School sucked, but man, when you step on that floor for the first time and think about all the great basketball players who stepped on that floor, its surreal, even if you are a fan like me...
Although I'm from Illinois and not Indiana, I still find this video absolutely amazing and even very emotional. I don't know how to explain it, but I've always had a passion and I'll admit, even a soft side for looking at old high school buildings and gymnasiums that are either abandoned or no longer standing. Southern Illinois also has many examples of school buildings such as these that I like to look at. This is a great reminiscing tool to look at our childhoods and sports memories as well.
odon where my parents went to school. mitchell where i went to school. in mitchell at emerson gym they still have junior high games. so many memories thanks man
Roberts Stadium, site of many HS games and tournaments as well as the home for the Evansville Ace's five national titles is no more. Slowly being torn down and will gone by spring. Great venue for lots of things, So much for progress.
Almost all of the are still around. Scottsburg and Bluffton's schools have been torn down since I posted this in 2008. The last time I passed by the Little York gym about 5 years ago it was in sad shape and looked like it was ready to fall in on itself.
Wow great video! the video takes me there! I am from Los Angeles, I feel that I should have played basketball in Indiana. Where people really appreciate high school basketball! Great Job!
The picture from Hope Indiana, their mascot was the red devils when it was hope high school and later changed to the Hauser jets with the new high school being build known at hauser Jr./Sr. high school. I went to school at Hope and enjoyed every minute, such a great town with a lot of pride.
South Bend Central HS (played Hickory HS in the movie: Hoosiers) is still there but closed. Also, South Bend closed LaSalle and Jackson High and may close either Clay HS or Riley HS soon.
What about the original Emmerich Manual HS in Indy? When the "new" Manual was opened in the 1960s, the original building became Wood HS, where my dad went. It closed, but I don't remember what year.
I went to Fowler Elementary aka the old Fowler, Indiana High School. It was pretty big but on the very top level which was for 5th and 6th grade you could kind of feel the floor sink in. After I graduated Benton Central I found out, they closed the elementary school and tore it down. Then again......I went to the new Benton Central Jr./Sr. High School. My mother went to the old one in Montmorenci, Indiana.
Anyone who doesn't like this video doesn't care about the state of Indiana nor indiana high school basketball. This is a great video and thank you for posting.
This needs to be updated! One school that did not make list yet is Fort Wayne, Indiana's Elmhurst High School. It was closed after 2010 school year, and just raised back around 2017 time frame.

the old school next to brown elementary in brownsburg that gym was used for the movie Hoosiers
Left out Sandcreek High School in Decatur County. It closed as a high school in 1968, but continued on as a primary school, grades K-6 until 1976. I don't know when it was built... late 40's or early 50's I'd say. The old school was torn down and a new one put in it's place, however, the gym is STILL in use.
2:29...it was the old high school gym,Knightstown Gym,Used in the movie Hoosiers,The Huskers were the name of the movie team,fictional....it was the home of the Knights before they changed their name to Panthers, the old high school,The Academy Building, are now apartments!
I went to Union Twp. (Johnson Co) and it did not close in 1962, in fact it is still an elementary school. They also hold an alumni dinner every yr. for all people who attended school there. I went to elementary there and my older siblings went to both elementary and high school. I started school in 1958 and they consolidated with Franklin when I started in the 7th grade.
Donald Hamilton's book 'Hoosier Temples' has a great vintage photo of the exterior of the Lafayette Jefferson gym on page 57. I've not been to many places in West Central/ North West Indiana. Will definately have to make a road trip over there this summer.
Funny that you mentioned NW Indiana. We are planning a road trip through that area sometime during this summer. Having lived most of 40 years in southeastern Indiana, it's the one area of the state I've not had much of a chance to see.
At 6:22... Hope High School. It later became Hope Elementary. That's where I went to elementary school. I have many fond memories of that building. It is now a community center... I believe the gym is still intact though.
That was a great Letter to the Editor. I was in that area 5 or 6 years ago. It was a very windy day on Regional Saturday. After the morning games at Washington I went up to Worthington then made my way back to Loogootee. I'm sure I got a photo of the Worthington gym. I'll have to be sure to include it the next time.
nachand fieldhouse in jeffersonville is a cool gym and really old, and about 2 or 3 miles from it in clarksville is colgate elementary has a pretty cool gym too.
Thanks for your efforts GASCITYGUY, I enjoyed it. You are pretty close and should get the GASTON gym. They torn down the HS part years ago, but the home of the BULLDOGS is still standing. Thanks again
You can add another one to your list. Anderson Highland just played it's last home basketball game tonight. It was a special, but sad, night. The school will be closed after this year.
An update on two of the schools pictured here. Kendallville High School (built 1915) is now East Noble Middle School. A proposal to build a new middle school was voted down in November, but there is likely to be a new proposal put forth in the coming year (the building has a lot of problems; as a substitute teacher there, I am familiar with them). New Paris continued as an elementary school until about 2000, when Fairfield built a new elementary school and the old building was sold to a church. It is still open and the gymnasium is still in use.
You missed a few. Morgantown high school and Nineva high school. Not sure when they closed but was consolidated to Indian creek high school in Trafalgar Indiana.
hi gas cityguy!! If you're in SE Indiana how's about some pics of the old Vevay gym,Moores Hill,New Point ,Dupont or an interior shot of Brown Gym in Madison?Oops, almost forgot the old Central High gym up on Ryker's Ridge. Played in most of those gyms in the 50's and 60's.
I'm going to be around southern Steuben County soon. Where in Pleasant Lake is that old high school located? Would it be the current elementary school?
Thank's for the heads up on Milroy. I'm currently working on a second video which will have a few shots of the outside of the school. I'll have to see if I can get a peek inside of it soon.
Great Video. Maybe add Natchez Fieldhouse....former downtown home of the Jeffersonville Red Devils. Still being used for basketball leagues and they actually played a HS girls game there last fall.
sorry to report but according to the Ft. Wayne newspaper the Auburn gym was razed a couple of weeks ago. I do have a pic of it fortunately for a future posting
GasCityGuy Well, you should've been up here about a year ago or so before the tore the old highschool/elementary school fro the 1800's down. and the old lhs from 1919....both are tore down
@GasCityGuy How about Visiting West Terre Haute, There are 2 schools still there in some form. Concannon High School is now an apartment building with the gym intact. The West Vigo Community Center is the old Valley High School Gym!
I went to high school and graduated in 2004 in the very first high school in this video. That school has a lot of history to it and it will be a shame if I ever see the day that it closes down. LaCrosse High School is one of the oldest schools still being used in the state and also has either the smallest enrollment of public schools in the state or 2nd.. can't remember which.
Missed one still standing gym the old Spencer H.S. gym Home of the Spencer COPS, unfortunatelythe high school that sat next to it was torn down in the mid 1980's.
i think you definately should have added some of the old economy gym in hagerstown indiana! and also some of the spartan bowl in connersville! those would have been a nice touch...also you cant forget about new castles chrysler fieldhouse! but anyways good job!
As an elementary student, I got to play some in several of these gyms that were changed to elementary schools in the southeastern part of the state. Thank you for giving this Hoosier turned Sooner a great memory.
Still come here, never gets old.
Awesome trip down memory lane! Thanks!
Medora high school. The picture of that gym is what I remember of the old classic gyms. When the game was hot, that house could really rock!
Seeing many of these old gyms makes me wish I could have grown up during various periods from back then and played for those teams.
I like history like this on old schools I wish I could see a video like this on the Wisconsin schools
My mother’s old high school was torn down. My father’s high school is still standing. My old high school had a fire during my freshman year. The badly burned part of the school was the worst since it was made of wood and brick. Sad seeing historic schools being torn down. We need to save our history!
The old high school in earl Park ended up catching fire. It was then demolished.
Luna Johnson I see nothing sad about it. It cost too much to maintain. There always comes a time to move on to something better. I bet you wouldn’t say it’s sad because I have to throw an old piece of clothing. Oh it’s so sad that I have to get new clothes. Very antisemitic!

Wow. The feelings of nostalgia run deep during this video.
The vallonia school was still used as an elementary school till 1980. Graduate of the last kindergarten class to go there. Great video.

4:22 in is a gym in my hometown, and I did several radio broadcasts from Adams Coliseum in Vincennes early in my career.
Hoosier hysteria AT IT'S FINEST
My aunt and uncle attended and graduated from NHHS I believe in 1965.
Thanks for this! Went to elementary school in Memphis IN, and HS at New Albany. The memories 👌🏼
Wow It is wonderful that you made this video. I am from Indiana but now live in Fl I was watching for Center High School near Muncie. It was demolished in around 1967. Would have made a wonderful building for something. this is a sad video and you couldnt have chosen better music. Makes me very proud. thanks
Love these short history videos! That’s how we make them too, short & to the point!
I love seeing these kind of videos but it makes me sad sometimes, the old world was better.. and seeing everything change to line phones, to now outstanding technology is amazing..
Great Job! I wish you would have some pictures of Auburn High School in this. Great old building that they just demolished last year.

Thanks I am always on the look out for another cool gym.
You didn't have Wendell Wilkie high school in Elwood Indiana
Played a lot of pickup games at the old Paris Crossing gym on Sunday nights thank you for this!
Madison High School was later converted into a Junior High School until around 1972. A new beautiful junior high school was then built next to the high school on the hill. I think it is currently used for a Senior Center.I attended Madison Consolidated. Love your presentations. Thank you.

Missed the old Clearspring high school too. Nice tribute!
This shit gives me chills every time I watch it. I guess you'd have to have an appreciation for basketball and history to feel that way.
Roberts Stadium, site of many HS games and tournaments as well as the home for the Evansville Ace's five national titles is no more. Slowly being torn down and will gone by spring. Great venue for lots of things, So much for progress.
Thanks for bringing back memories of the 5 gyms I played in back in the early 60s.

I wish you had a picture of the interior of that old gym used in Hoosiers.
Most definitely, a big thumbs up for both of these vids.
The picture from Hope Indiana, their mascot was the red devils when it was hope high school and later changed to the Hauser jets with the new high school being build known at hauser Jr./Sr. high school. I went to school at Hope and enjoyed every minute, such a great town with a lot of pride.

This is so cool. Thanks for doing this.
Central High School in Fort Wayne, In. closed in 70 or 80's, but is used for other school stuff..Adults and kids alike...
My Alma Mater the Old Crawfordsville High School is listed. My class was the last class that graduated from the Old CHS back in 1993

Can you do a video of the old high school in Clinton Indiana? Thanks.
@GasCityGuy Mays High School is now Mays Elementary too where I attended elementary school. :) Thanks for the video!
Great video. Thanks for posting.
Noblesville gym. Still there and in great condition. Built 1925. You been there?
Whoops. Just saw it. Right behind my house and that's where I grew up learning to play basketball
The Old Loogootee Gym looks like Cedar Knob's Gym from the movie Hoosiers.
Played in most of those gyms in the 50's and 60's.
old angola high school not mentioned. as well as pleasant lake high school. both in steuben co.
Huntington's Central school's still there and is elderly housing . Drove by it tonight.
Wasn't Oolitic HS a team that the Hickory Huskers actually played in the film?
My school was built in 1910 and is still in use.
Madison, In....Madison High School did close in 1957, but opened as Madison Jr High till 1970 or so..Now senior apts I think..
I can't believe how there is nothing from Lake or Porter County
I got close with LaCrosse! Don't worry I'll be up that way again.
Ok there are alot that were torn down like the old east chicago Washington gym
Thanks
GasCityGuy
Well, you should've been up here about a year ago or so before the tore the old highschool/elementary school fro the 1800's down. and the old lhs from 1919....both are tore down
Several people have told me to look up the Hammond Civic Center. I'll have to swing by there the next time I'm in the area.
Does anybody know if the Shields HS shown at 5:42 was attended by John Mellencamp?
Uh, you need a current picture of Greensburg. That gym is still in use. My daughter played volleyball there. It's a part of the junior high now.
@GasCityGuy
How about Visiting West Terre Haute, There are 2 schools still there in some form. Concannon High School is now an apartment building with the gym intact. The West Vigo Community Center is the old Valley High School Gym!
I have been trying to find any pics of the old East Chicago Washington gym. Anyone??
@crazyslave
The gym at Hope is still there. My aunt lives a few blocks away and I see it often, though I haven't been inside it for awhile.
Old Brownsburg gym where the movie Hoosiers was filmed.
Beautiful brick buildings. I’m not American so I’m wondering, are there any old school buildings left that still serve their original purpose?
Bedford High School gym, AKA " The Quarry"
I wish there was more than just a few photos of the New Richmond High School. It was demolished in the 50's.
Great Video !!!
Nice job! Please include the old Culver High School gym (which is now used by the elementary school) in the sequel.
i think you definately should have added some of the old economy gym in hagerstown indiana! and also some of the spartan bowl in connersville! those would have been a nice touch...also you cant forget about new castles chrysler fieldhouse! but anyways good job!
