Scott, get yourself a battery powered grease gun. Like a Dewalt or Milwaukee. It would make a job less of a chore, and you may even grease more often. Love your content.

Was going to suggest this too. Also, if you have a compressor (which he most likely has) use an air operated grease gun. One other big help is ……… get the nipple attachment that clips on to the grease zerk. It makes one handed operation real easy. Don’t know why they even sell the standard type that you have to push and click in on a grease fitting. Half the time you don’t get it on right and it pops off and you have grease everywhere 😀

neglect maintenance? sure, maybe you could argue that. but you also noticed when maintenance was neglected, and dedicated the time to catch up on that maintenance.
furthermore, i truly appreciate the time i get to spend slowing down and focusing on the tools. im so often in a hurry to do the project that i overlook the tools i use. spending some intimate time giving those tools the care and respect they deserve is a lovely little reset that i like to do from time to time.

I grew up on a farm in east-central North Dakota, and for farmers on the Great Plains, tractors are an essential part of life. There are the big tractors that pull the tillage and planting implements around the fields, and then there are the smaller tractors with their loaders, mowers, scrapers, feed grinders, snow blowers, etc. They are game changers.

As a farmer, I love grease. I hate replacing bearings and driving out bushings.
A little tip from a budget minded farmer, when reloading a tube into the gun, start threading the lower half back on, after putting a tube in it. But don't tighten it up!!! Leave it loose enough for air to escape, usually about half way threaded on. Release the plunger, and give it a few seconds before you tighten it. Works all the time, most of the time.

The post hole digger can be a real pain. Without sufficient weight, on hard ground, it just wants to spin. I had to stop working on fence and dig a hole for an outside light pole. Worked on it for about three hours and got only a foot deep. Noticed the electric utility crew replacing a pole at the road. Surprising how well a hole can be dug with the addition of a case of beer.

Grease every single time you use your equipment and you’ll have less chance to get grease all over your tools and body. My neighbor has a Kubota just like this. He got overly enthusiastic with the backhoe and managed to crack the transmission case. It was an expensive and involved repair. They say be very careful using a 3 point mounted backhoe that doesn't have a full frame under it to spread the load and prevent stressing the engine block and transmission/rear axle. After I saw the neighbors headache, I see why it's good to use the backhoe gingerly.

      Greetings from OZ
Yes re overloading. A mate leant me a Kabota about this size with a backhoe, he warned me about over loading.... his transmission case had cracked previously (right around!) It was welded, a lot of time and money. But the story does not end there. I managed to break off a part of the bucket. Yes there was a small crack to start It that had rust, I finished it off by trying to wedge two rocks apart. I spent the next day v notching preheating and multi pass welding, I also hammered and ground back the weld between each pass. I used high spec low hydrogen rods. It looked like new when I finished but what a pickle. So from now on gently does it! LOL

I cracked my rear housing using the backhoe once. The problem was the out riggers were not on solid ground, and too much stress was going through the wheels! Always make sure the out riggers are on solid ground!! I have the pressure relief valve maxed on my backhoe, and have had to reinforce just about everything on it! I used it a lot were I used to live, working for a water company. The backhoe is nice, in that, I can find pipes and not break them (usually); saved a lot of money for my employer!

It is better than the battery operated and so easy to use that my Kubota FEL and backhoe are always greased! The small Kubotas like you have pay for themselves over and over again. So easy to move on a trailer and so very versatile - I will say that the handiest accessory is a set of pallet forks and box blade.

I own skid loaders, telehandler, a 100 hp kubota tractor, a backhoe loader, man lifts, etc., but the little tractor would be the one I pick if I can only have one. My wife likes to use it as well while she won’t touch the bigger equipment. Heck, yesterday while I was framing a roof she tilled and planted a new asparagus patch.😎

The Christmas tree farm my brother used to work for, uses the Kubota small tractors for mowing and fertilizing between the tree rows. Of course, they have large tractors that can run 10 row boom sprayers, but they can only run on the harvest roads, while the Kubota is small enough to go down the rows and is stout enough to haul tree balers and conveyors down the rows during harvest season.

Many tractors don't have downforce on the three-point, but are relying on gravity alone.
We used to use a Deere 420 tractor(30 horsepower) with a post auger. It turned out, that a 4" x 7' wooden stake could be shoved into the digger frame, and one person could hang off the end of that for downforce. They were far enough away from the auger to be 'mostly' safe.

Ten years ago we bought acreage that needed to be mowed. A friend offered to sell us her husbands tractor and finish mower at a "jump on it" price, so I did. However, it doesn't have a loader. Last month, at age 74, I shoveled and carted twelve yards of dirt over a couple of days. That aggravated an old back injury and I'm just now getting back to work. I've been watching for a used loader locally from the beginning but haven't located one yet. This old JD 301 is just 2WD so I'll probably just trade it in for something that suits my needs better.

I got one of its bigger brothers last year - a L3800HD. I grease it religiously. The loader frame has stickers saying every 10hrs and has 2/3rds of the nipples. The rest are every 50hrs.
I opted to get an excavator rather than the backhoe attachment and scored a good deal on a used 4 tonne Kubota. It has probably been more useful to me than the tractor over the last year. Has the same HP as the tractor, but its hydraulic system is far more powerful with higher pressure and flow rate. Boring holes with the auger drive is a cinch. Only downside is that it DRINKS grease.
For my environment that is dry and dusty for the majority of the year, besides grease, the air filters are the most important things to be on top of. The maintenance schedule is to clean them every 100hrs, but I do them every 50hrs.
Also on maintenance, a hot tip I got from a hydraulics guy is to cut open the old hydraulic oil filters when you change them to inspect for metal fragments. If you see anything, do not operate until you've pulled apart and inspected the entire hydraulic system to find where they came from unless you want to spend a lot more money in the near future.

Your reasons to hate grease are very understandable, Scott - totally with you! Here’s an idea: When I was 9 my aunt let me help with the maintenance on the farm machines, and at that age being shown, and then allowed, to wield the grease gun was _fun_ ! So for a few years I greased everything that needed greasing and then some. Which only shows that every worker needs supervision ;)
But I warmly recommend this as an alternative to the gadgets advertised here - pretend it is fun, let a little one in on the secret, and boom, you got this :)
Or a local cooperative? There might be a grease monkey down the lane who has something they hate doing, and once every three months you two pay each other a visit for half a day and sort out those things? I miss having that network of people now that I live in a big city!
I absolutely loved the kids pulling up a chair to watch you work 😎

Bucket, forks, brush hog, box blade. Those are the first four things I tell anyone to get.
After that an auger has good uses as does a rear receiver hitch for moving trailers. (I got one off an old truck at the scrapyard and modified it to work on a 3 pt hitch. )
A boom extension for the loader can be real handy for raising trusses and such.
So many things you can do.

I wouldn't want to ever give up my skid steer due to it doing loader work way more efficiently than a tractor but a tractor is still more versatile overall. Three point attachments are also plentiful and cheap compared to skid steer attachments. The best thing I've invested in for greasing so far is a lock and lube tip. Clamps on tight and doesn't let any grease go anywhere but in the zert.

My Dad bought an early eighties B8200 (current BX comparable) 4wd hydrostatic second hand about 1990 and it's been an amazing machine for his small acre. Here in SoCal, the 60" mower gets used several times a year for knocking down the grasses as fire season keeps getting longer and longer. It has aged out its tires once and we are starting to tear it down to split the tractor in half. Not because it has broken down but because the driveshaft has a rubber boot that has disintegrated and we need to split the tractor to repair it. They are great tools.

To transform that post-hole borer, add a roll of lead right above the 90' drive head. The weight added makes the bit bite faster, bore straighter & better - a nice cheap trick to make them work better. :-)

The real trick to making a 3PH mounted PHD bite well is keeping the corners of the cutting edge square and sharp. Not surprisingly, they tend to round off quickly. Rather than replace the worn tip, I just weld a piece of flat stock onto each side and bevel the leading edge at 45 degrees. Replace as needed. Then your biggest problem will be keeping it from digging too quickly!

Coming from a farmer I have worked with all types and sizes of tractors and implements over the past twenty years all are vary dangerous if missed used. All can severely injured or kill you but the only implement that scares me the most when I use it is the 3-point augers they are vary unpredictable only in the fact that you have vary little control over the bit in my opinion they are the most dangerous and underestimated piece of equipment because of their size

Brought back so many memories. But mine was a little blue Ford, with PTO. We call the "mower deck" a "Slasher" in Australia. I wish I'd stayed on my 6 acres 25yrs ago instead of moving to the city. 😞

I have a little old John Deere 400 that I got to mow about 5 acres of farm field we purchased about 4 years ago. I picked up a little loader for it last year and can't imagine not having it.
Hard and time consuming to pull the mowing deck and put it on.
I ended up buying another Deere strictly for mowing.
The best purchases I have made sense buying the farm!

I have gotten around to liking what I don't like. Those are the character builders. Those are the tasks I get done first. Pretty soon the dislike starts to vanish. Also, I truly love maintenance. It gives a sense of security, knowing that the tools are taken care of. I have a notepad with dates and tasks and it makes me happy :)

That’s a great old tractor and well deserving of regular maintenance. Thankfully the newer tractors are designed to change attachments much easier and faster. I can switch from a 3 point attachment to my backhoe in 15 minutes, including removing the lower arms. My L4060 Kubota has a full backhoe frame and as long you;re not on wildly uneven ground, it’s easy to mount the BH92 backhoe.

I absolutely love my grease gun. It is an "essential craftsman" in its own right. Without it my 50+year life in engineering would have been hell. I find it both rewarding and therapeutic to pump new grease into whatever needs it, and see the dirty gunky stuff get squeezed out the other end.

I was a cabinet maker and carpenter in my previous life and man do I hate grease too and for exactly the same reason. Grease one fitting and you'll find grease on your pillow the next day 😂
We had a strict rule that grease, wd-40, etc never even entered the shop unless it absolutely needed to maintain a tool then it would be taken back out immediately. All it takes is someone spraying some wd40 in another part of the shop and you'll spend a day fixing all the fisheye.

You greasing that tractor reminds me of my number one tool. A 4' x 4' x 1 1/2" thick piece of neoprene I lay on the ground. I have wollered it many hours and it is much better than knee pads when you are outside changing oil or greasing a tractor. I think I have even taken a short nap on the thing.

I have a 2008 Kubota 2320 hydro that I bought with only 203 hrs. on it some years ago. I have a backhoe that I design on CAD and built which is likened to a Woods backhoe but just a slight bit bigger with a quick attach adapter. I have little fiddling around with mounting it. I use it often now that the weather is better. Love your content. Take care.

Hello:::: You and I think alike, hate grease so I got Harbor Freight Gloves.. I guess 9 years ago I got the BX 2370 with belly mower and front end loader. I was going to buy a 13 acre and home, I got out bid. I got 90 hours on it now. Not the first problem. Two weeks aft I got mine a friend ran and got a 25 HP John Deere...It does not deserve to have the name Deere on it. The Kubota may be the very best small tractor made. The House I watched you build may be one of the best build homes in America !!!! Keep up the good work !!!!

Approaching 20 years ago now my Dad bought a roughly comparable Deere, but 1 size too small for a backhoe. That is probably the biggest missed opportunity I can even think of. The FEL is also _just_ under powered enough to be frustrating because you can't pick up anything actually heavy with it (I think it's 700lb max capacity, but that also has to include the bucket and it won't do it at full reach). It's like a garden tractor that looks like a compact tractor.
So... If you're going to buy one of these you're going to paying up anyhow. Make sure you buy enough.

I dropped a bunch of trees on my property in an afternoon of chainsaw induced bliss. I spent the next year trying to find time to get out there and get that mess cleaned up. Between the job and the wife and the kids and the.. well, it just didn't happen. I bought a compact 25hp tractor with a loader and a set of forks.. 2 weekends of an hour here and an hour there and I was all cleaned up. I cannot believe how life changing hydraulics are.
Few observations for those shopping. Skid steer quick-connect is the bomb. Pay extra for a machine that has that. Quick connect loader options are a waste; 2 years in my loader has never been detached as it is too useful. The lock-on grease gun tip is the way to go. Lock-n-lube is the brand I have. Just spend the money, you need this. The backhoe attachment was expensive as sin and I'll probably never make my money back on it.. but gosh is it fun!

I had one 28 hp little bigger then yours. On my 8 acre home stead 275 yr old log cabin. Bought it new in 94. I agree one of the best tools I have had. My drive way was a 1/2 mile. One year it took 24 hrs tractor time removing snow to get to the mailbox. Now I live in Florida sub marine land 2 blocks from the ocean thank god for homes on stilt’s. Flooded 3 times in 16 years. Got to love it. I miss my tractor

Your electrical problem may be as simple as a backed out pin on the connector or a mispinned connector. Sometimes when the new post is assembled the line don't get pushed far enough into the connector housing to latch properly. When you mate the two halves of the connector the pin gets pushed out of the connector enough for it not to make a sound connection. Pulling the wiring around can also move a pin that's not latched properly too. Mispinned connectors also happen, just look at the installed connector and check that for every wire going in there's one coming out opposite it. Good luck.

Get a Pneumatic powered grease gun and a lock and lube grease gun nozzle. The nozzle locks onto fitting so you don’t have to hold on to it. I hated greasing as well but this combo has proved very handy. And not crazy expensive like batt powered grease guns.
