Why is the Sheep Barn so WET?: Vlog 200

  • Today was a day of catch up as once again, lambing was slow.
Chasing lambs around with a bottle to make sure they are getting fed by mom, and starting the last pen of ewes and lambs in the back half of the barn.
One of the big jobs we put off (because we dislike it so much) is bookwork. We recently hired my sister, which has been a life saver...
After spending most of the day as my bookkeepers assistant, I ventured back to the barn and was faced with soaking wet floors and pens. Another fallout from my roof drama.

Nothing sweeter than watching babies bounce around and frolic around their mamas, And those little ones that are being bottle fed are lonely without your mama. So you get to be their mom in the so sweet. I would love to come spend a week and just soak in all of the goodness of those little babies. You would not have to worry about the babies I would take over lol. Take care and God-bless Deb

If you open the door at the opposite end from the chimneys - not wide open, just a small opening at the bottom. It will allow cool air from outside to enter low and that will force more warm moist air out of the chimneys you do have via natural convection.

Sandi, lets talk moisture control. I'm an old greenhouse guy so I have experienced interior rain fall. If you can on warmer days/nights or times when outside temperature can be tolerated by sheep, open your side vents. Try to match inside temp to outside temp. No difference between the two equals reduced condensation on interior roof and you create air exchanges in the barn. Might be worth a try.

You are right, but since She doesn’t have chimnys on half of the barn warm air in this case amonium will stay under the roof with out motion, ventilator to suck it out will be great, and what we have grains zoolit for soil, there is a zoolit powder for animal bedding when wet.
      I hope I helped 1%.

Sandi, I have never followed a video log so closely as your's. Maybe catch up every week or other week, but your's, especially since the roof failed, I find myself checking to see if it's up yet. So glad it's looking like you may get a break over Christmas. Wish you the merriest of holidays. My friend - she is hooked on you and she has never followed a You Tube blog before ( she mustered sheep in New Zealand many, many, MANY years ago) - and I have one request and that is that you could make them longer. You just can't put in too much cute. Even the bad, you do such a - words fail me here - great? job in taking us along with you. I'm always left wanting a little more. So please, don't edit so hard, especially on the cute and cuddly. And Thanks for enriching my life this year.

yes, but you need to circulate the air outside which wastes heat...its most likely ground water.. i would get better drainage outside the foundation. possibly put a sump pump in the middle, and pipe out the sewage water that will collect. i would get a wood fired stove in the middle, and it will heat, dry the air, and dry out the concrete.

Good job keeping on top of everything. Something to think about or try...we always had a bucket and scoop and spread a little lime down before new bedding. It was done to stop the spread of any bacteria, but we found it kept the straw WAY dryer. Not sure the science behind it but it made a huge difference. Try it in a few jugs side by side and see if you notice any difference. Merry Christmas.

Again, your dairy maid background serves you well. All the chores meticulously done! I know EXACTLY what you mean about being tired and letting little management things slip, like bedding up. Excellent point!
The idea of leaving the door at the chimney-less end of the barn open enough to create natural convection to move moisture to the remaining chimneys is an excellent one. Hopefully won't create too much draftiness like fans. Besides without CHANGING the air, you can't remove the moisture. Fans just relocate it slightly. BTW - TOTALLY relate to your issue with bookkeeping!

This case happened. When the wet-bulb temperature of the air becomes equal to or higher than the temperature of the concrete floor. To overcome this problem you need to reduce humidity by blowing dry and warm air
    during the night
In other words, you need to reduce the relative humidity a little by blowing a little dry hot air

    • @Sicktrickintuner
      @Sicktrickintuner 4 года назад

      313safa
Yep I have this happen in my shop now and again. The concrete sweats when it gets cold then the temperatures rise and moisture buildup happens on the surface of everything if there isn’t enough dry heat.
A small heat source works well.

By the-way. I own a flock of s ewes, ranging from 170 to 210 ewes. I have no problem with this herd. I spend 10 days with him in the winter season and 10 days in the summer season if lamping. For the rest of the year, the herd enjoys with the shepherd in the green pasture. And I feed the herd for only 40 days in winter and the rest of the year. The herd depends on grazing

My corgi won't jump or come in/up until i say "right up, right in" or "you can come up" she is literally the best dog i have ever owned. I dont deserve her.

The water bowls seem to be a recurring theme for you. Why not install another bowl or two to help with your constant pen changes?

16:05 - Ewe marked 52. She is in the pen with the other ewes that have delivered, and i swear to look at her i would have her in the pen of ewes waiting to deliver! Your system has side benefits that you probably don't need or notice because you know your sheep!

their is a 52 marked lamb that was nursing, like 2 seconds after u saw it just looks like 25 but if it was another lamb she would have pushed it away maybe watch before u react next time xF

Fans? Big huge ones! Can you blow it down towards the part that still has the chimneys so it has hope of going out through them? We - the arm chair quarterbacks that know NOTHING - can dream up ideas for you but only you know what will work for you. I hope the suggestions give you a moment to breathe and perhaps laugh. We mean well.
Good job hiring Sister! Like Mark did with the washing service- Delegate and hire where you can. You are doing good work 👍🏼
    Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
