Nate Wood - fOUR: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Jan. 16, 2019 | Colin Marshall -- Nate Wood says he only wishes he had more limbs. He made the comment in an interview NPR partner station WBGO, noting only the limitations of his physical body, rather than his ability to multitask. In his latest project, Nate Wood - fOUR, Wood's brain splits attention between four synthesizers, an electric bass and a drum kit, all while singing about futurism. He's his own engineer and roadie, too, who drove himself from Brooklyn to our D.C. office and quietly set up his gear, alone.
His setup is made possible through a long road of ergonomic trial-and-error that includes the precise height of the keyboards, the instrument sequencing and a wearable microphone to minimize physical demand and maximize as many possibilities as he can fit within arm's reach of a drum throne. It's a feat of ingenuity, especially considering Wood plays all of fOUR's tunes in one take. No backing tracks. No overdubs.
But while it's a thrill to see the multi-instrumentalist wizardry here, his music is perhaps best appreciated with eyes closed. Nate Wood pulls us into an industrial, neon dystopia with tunes that stand alone as headphone music without the accompanying visuals, meticulously crafted and with precise execution. This isn't novelty music. You're hearing (and seeing) a mastermind songwriter and mad scientist at work. Just look at that lab coat!

I'd like to believe this whole project started because nobody showed up on time for band practice except him.
hahahaha good observation though
Wow 🙌
Yeah! Hahahaj
u silly goose
@@yarpyarp85 hahahahahaha
The drummer and bassist have never been more in sync.
LOL.
Please, NPR, now that you’ve brought Nate to the Tiny Desk, my only wish for 2019 is for Tigran Hamasyan to come as well. I wish for nothing else, thank you 🙏
👼👼👼
NPR couldn't handle Tigran. That's like putting all six Infinity Gems into the Duracell Bunny.
Tigran with the middle eastern Berkley ensemble. I agree, that would be some *fire* !
Also, Hiromi! Hiromi+Tigran= faces melting off! ;)
He has been there now
Nate Wood Mastered my bands 1st EP, and he did an amazing job. So you know, that's one more thing he's good at.
Congrats man. U MUST BE AMAZING
I came for the novelty, I stayed for the songs. Excellent song structure under any circumstance but performed solo is stunning.
Generally, I find these "a bunch of instruments at once" type things super corny, but this pleasantly surprised me. This is super duper tasteful, and super cool.
Use your ears not your eyes.
Now all we need is a Louis Cole tiny desk.
Yep. I've been thinking aBOUT YOUUUU

NPR Music, thank you for inviting Nate! Pleasure to see him here as solo. Like this artist and his own project a lot.
Awesome focus and it takes such talent to be able to write coherent parts that you can smoothly play together as one piece that doesn’t sound like one guy trying to play multiple instruments.
This is probably the coolest thing I have ever seen from a musician.
That "better if you try" song was very inspiring
what a legend! Not just the raw skill, but also the epic grooves
Nate Wood has gotta be presently The Most Valuable Player in Jazz (i.e. instrumental music). Just watched him w/ Will Vinson and Gilad Hekselman on their latest incarnation of Trio Grande, live at the Bimhuis, they sound amazing. Incredible. NW has redefined and pushed the envelope on the concept of a One Man Band.
Thank you so much for this recommendation! Checked it out and it was amazing!
@@malin6594 You're welcome! Glad you liked it, cheers, all the best.
@@tilurisoyeah a few minutes ago I realized if Miles was still alive he’d probably be knocking on Nates door😮
Who ever said men can't multi-task...
The guitar player
Love the variety Tiny Desk brings! This is amazing!
actual musical talent is so refreshing
jesus christ these comments are giving me a headache. nate wood is an accomplished musician who has played with NUMEROUS other acts (Tigran Hamasyan, Wayne Krantz, Kneebody, and Taylor Hawkins just to name a few) and is more than capable of connecting with other musicians in a live setting. a quick youtube search of his name will show you this.
I cannot speak for nate but I imagine he started fOUR as a project merely to push and test his own individual abilities as a musician, not because he "couldn't find other people to play with". most likely some people at NPR saw his videos, thought it was impressive, and invited him down to play a session.
if you don't like the music that's fine, nobody's saying you have to. but don't get on some soap box preaching "this isn't what music should be about" when you clearly haven't even done the slightest bit of research.
My advice for you would be (and not that anybody asked haha) to take RUclips comments less seriously. People will say what they want, and pointing out and targeting those individuals won't accomplish what you want it to. I love that you know so much about Nate Wood though, one of my favorite drummers and a hell of a musician!!
My guess is that Nate Wood doesn't care what a bunch of RUclips comments say about him. He knows who he is and what he does. But I understand that it can be frustrating seeing all these people not understand the point of his music and can't even see him as anything more than a drummer that looks like Putin. But it's not something to have a headache over trust me.
Live on brother!
Jokes are sometimes hard to convey over the internet, let alone in person.
@@1MarkKeller couldn't agree more.
Wow this dude Nate is a real musician of multitude of many talents. I wish people would care less of his looks and realize his talents. Fantastic job Nate Wood and I will now follow you and look for more of your work.
Randy, I agree with you.
Somehow, our society of IDIOTS thinks it ok to criticize publicly with the first stupid thought that comes to mind, but keep in mind sir, it really is their own disgust of themselves that they spew out as insults to others.
As for the music, I like its hypnotic feel.
Its mysteriously relaxing.
A little Magmaesque at 9:56. Great seeing you live Nate. Keep on keeping' on.
Enquanto muitas bandas inteiras não conseguem fazer música de qualidade esse cara sozinho faz o som da banda toda com muita qualidade sensacional!!
Like the old saying goes.. “ If you want it yourself, done do it right.”
He looks like janitor at your local high school. I love it.
EXACTLY...
...if Putin was your janitor...
This guy preformed at my local high school with Tigran and Kneebody in 2009/2010
This is really great. I love the music and it reminds me that someone said music is a good example of anarchy, meaning that there does not have to be a controlling body or any red tape to be able to make music. I am very glad I listened to Justin Hawkins interviewing you. Otherwise I wouldn't have known you were here.
Thank you for sharing your music creations. 🤩😍
Very VERY COOL Nate! Good to see your development as an artist. I’m definitely a fan! Great to see you bro. Your set was SICK!
Ce que j'aime, au delà de la performance d'indépendance multi-instrumentiste de ce gars, c'est que sa musique est puissante, profonde et touchante ! Bravo
This is beautiful.
Wow, I didn't know you could do this! Incredibly creative! Very nice!
so talented. Very inspiring
Now I understand why this is Louis Cole's favorite drummer.
He even says "Bass Solo" at 12:56 out loud, now I know where Louis gets it from lolol
Over 62000 people have watched this so far. What a wonderful musician
My friend asked me who'd play synth, drums, bass AND sing all at the same time. I told him Nate Wood.
tom ty I see what you did there.
When he's not governing The Sovereign States of Russia, he's making dope ass Electric Jazz.
What a guy.
Incredible performance
I wonder how many times a day he is told that he looks like Putin
Yo pensé lo mismo
So, you´re saying he is NOT Putin?? Lies!
No, on the contrary, i thought the sane. I saw it and i said - OMG is Putin!!
It's like Putin have a baby with Phill Collins
I'm not clear on his drug of choice.
This guy's is just a beast amazing independence I saw him play with tigran Hamasyan I was amazed
Woah that was amazing
THis guy is either a robot or an alien! Amazing!!!
Or an alien robot
What a true artist👍👌
This is amazing.
Dude plays bass better than I do with both hands! lol. Well done.
About damn time
This is phenomenal. Thanks to NRP for letting Nate do what he does. And thanks to Louis Cole. Nate you fricking rock man, keep doing what you're doing
You've got a great voice. You sound like Brendan from Umphrey's McGee. That's a huge compliment.
AMAZING musicianship and independence! Your ability to play around with and sub-divide time, is on point!!! ...while playing bass and triggering, nonetheless!
Looks like I've got A LOT of work ahead of myself, trying to learn your material! ;)
Holy crap, weird and wonderful.
YES Nate! so sick. Everyone make sure to check out his band KNEEBODY as well.
Trilha sonora de sábado à noite!!!Maravilhosoooo 🎶🔊❤🌈

Would absolutely kill to see Vulfpeck do a tiny desk

This feels... MDMAzing ♥️♥️♥️♥️
so much respect for this dude, this is super hard. imagine him playing only one of these instruments, it must be boring to him.
You should check out Kneebody! He's the drummer of that band. Definitely not boring lol
“And we will now be singing “
This is so gooooood
Underrated
Dopest one-man-band.
Awesome. A one man band. 🎶
Brilliant!!
Amazing
Holy crap! After seeing this I had to pick up my bass!
Pretty cool!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
My mother used to sing this softly lull me to sleep.
Awesome! Genius
One music Man. One nice set! :)
so sick
This man IS the rhythm section
I would give this guy a contract, he is better than most 4 man bands. Add a knockout lead singer, and you have a virtual hit machine. Great talent, I wish you the best.
Make him the lead. He has this Talking head vibe.
Nate so cool man
Talented
Chapeau!!!
Anyone else getting a Moby vibe from his lyrics and tone of voice? Music is out of this world, btw!
Note that since this video was posted, Kneebody's bassist left the band so now he'll be doing drum and bass more regularly.
Genius 👌👏👏👏
Crazzzy... I like it.
This I as Dope!!! Wow!!
Kneebody, Louis Cole or Ben Wendel when?
So rad
And there was I thinking that the one man band was a thing of the past.... this is nuts!!!
I think this guy has just started a whole new genre of music......................:)
awesome
Yay!
Holy shit what an opener!
Wow a modern day one man band.
Good show so good
I was legit trying to find the other band members for a whole minute !
so what you’re telling me is this guys a genius
Talent. Wow
Großartig Weltklasse hammer Respekt

Please invite The Muffinz (SA) next, would love to see them at Tiny Desk 👏🏾
Thanks to the Louis Cole threads for getting me here. Fabulous!
That bass line in "Better if i try"
wow this man
Must be how Mozart felt, having all the music and parts in his head.
Read the interview in Drumhead magazine most recent, hes on the cover. By the way the second is wth? Vocals w bass and keys all done w so much 🔥. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏Wow🤯. Its like if U. K. And Crimson raised a gifted child and he said " wait like this? ". 💯. Btw the drum part is Epic.
Awesome..:D
SAW THIS GUY LIVE!!!
Insane
His vocals sound like Michael Stipe. Cool!
We want Wale this year! #TinyDeskWale
