For people who are worried about the glair that comes from the glass, I'm pretty sure you can buy a standard anti-glair cover for this. They're pretty cheap I believe and they come in different sizes. I had one before and it basically just sticks to your screen.
You are a lucky kid! My personal favorite is the Sony Vaio Duo 11, but with convertibles it's what fits your usage style best. That's why it's so cool there are a variety of designs on the market.
The XPS 12, despite the unusual hinge, is put together electronically in the same way as other laptops. Wires run through the display mount points, down the frame to the motherboard.
Depends on what you need. The Samsung ATIV is the only one with a digital pen and it's also the only one that you can use as a pure tablet-- both great for artists and note-takers. Between the Yoga 13 and the Dell, I'd pick the Dell for its better display and dual band WiFi.
It uses an mSATA interface so if you're adventurous about opening Ultrabooks then you could upgrade the SSD. Dell kindly offers service manuals in PDF format on their website.
Since this doesn't have a digital pen, it uses only capacitive input (your finger/hand or a capacitive stylus). So palm rejection isn't great. If you need that feature look at tablets with an active digitizer and Wacom or N-Trig digital pen like the Lenovo ThinkPad Helix, Samsung ATIV 700t, MS Surface Pro or Sony Vaio Duo.
Yes, we'll review the Acer W700 very soon. The XPS 12 is flashier and has an even better display though the Yoga 13's display is quite good. The Yoga is bigger and feels moe like a standard laptop. I'd lean towards the Dell, though the spinning display mount scares me a little.
The Duo 11 gets you both touch and the digital pen, as far as I know with the X230T you still have to pick one or the other. The Duo also has a higher res display. But the ThinkPad has a much better keyboard.
I really enjoy your reviews, they are very thorough and professional. I like that you even took note of how it would perform for current PC games. Thanks.
Thank you for these reviews. They are by far the most informed yet practical reviews I've found. I really appreciate that it's not a topical, hack job or an "un-boxing" which tells us little. You spend time with the product and it's reflected in the high quality of these reviews. As a tech junkie and "power user" I felt obligated to say THANK YOU! to you and you're team.
The MBA 13" and XPS 12 would be work fine for those tasks. If you want a touchscreen, get the Dell. If you have a fancy for convertibles, get the Dell.
Just an off hand opinion to recommend the XPS12 to anyone looking to purchase a system. I have had this unit with an i7, 8gbs and 256ssd drive since the launch day. I use it for work and play. All my old programs run on it with no issues. New programs work in both the W8 and desktop formats. The old ones run in the desktop mode(really W7). It works exceptionally well. If you want a comparison and can't see one in your area, look at the XPS13. Very well made and sturdy. 😊
I like the ports on the Vaio Duo 11 like Ethernet, HDMI and VGA but I much prefer the Dell's keyboard. Depends on which matters more to you. The Vaio is a little bit lighter too (4 ounces).
I really do love this woman's reviews, her voice just soothes, shes knowledgeable, and shes not biased to the market leaders since she judges the devices on their own merit. Top marks and keep up the good work.
Yup. if you go to dell.com "/support/troubleshooting/au/en/19/Product/xps-12-9q33" -> "drivers and downloads" -> "Mouse, Keyboard & Input Devices (2)" the trackpad driver is synaptics. Thats the main reason I ordered :)
I ordered my XPS 12 last week. Won't arrive for another month. I saw somewhere that the swivel hinge has been tested up to 20,000 times. Great reviews by the way. I appreciate them. Almost bought the Vaio Duo 11, but the lack of a trackpad and the screen always facing up deterred me. Hated the widely spaced keys of the Vaio as well.
i have had this machine for 4 years now. wonderful piece of technology. Had a swollen battery issue which needs replacing but otherwise, great machine. Wows the friends. Cant buy it anymore so i am keeping it as something uniquely made.
You "can" use any device in any way you want. The point was that it's not built with that position in mind. The Lenovo has a grip texture to it's edges that will keep it from sliding. I'd be hesitant to use tent mode on any slick surface, one bump from an outsider and your $1k+ device is sliding off the edge.
in response to no tent, if you have it in "laptop mode", flip the screen around then spin the machine around 180 so the screen is facing you, you can use it like a tablet thats propped up, like tent would be
Yes (though suboptimal solutions) - Intel HD4000 supports 3 independent displays. Since there's only one Mini-DisplayPort though: per USB (USB-monitor, adapter or external solution ala Matrox) per DisplayPort 1.2 MST daisy-chaining (specific displays or (still not available) hubs) per Intel Wireless Display 3.0
Lisa! Another excellent review, thank you for covering this device. I ordered mine quite some time ago (i7, 256 SSD) and I was just told that it shipped from Dell this morning. Your review covers a lot of the features for me, so thanks for that! Have a very Happy New Year! - - Mike
Lisa.. awesome review one of the best reviews I have seen comprehensive! One thing probably missing in the review is webcam quality keep it up! Just got my XPS 12 after seeing review. Mine XPS 12 core i5 version with 256GB SSD. Just got a question. How is keyboard connected to screen is it wifi or wired somehow??
OK Lisa, I have been waiting on this review. If you had to chose, would you buy the Yoga 13 or the XPS12? I really like the dual-band WiFi and Widi on the XPS.
Surface Pro: Max storage 128GB, Intel i5, only 4GB of RAM. Keyboard is detachable, which means thin, but not as practical as the Dell. Dell XPS 12: 128GB or 256GB storage, Intel i5 or i7, 4GB or 8GB of ram. Only weight 1.35lbs than the Surface Pro w/o keyboard. Dell has also been making hardware for over 20 years. +
How am I always getting to your videos?! Trying to choose a new laptop for my studies and I always end up on your reviews :D Loved every single one of them. Thank you for your wonderfull work.
I kind of want the Dell XPS 12, the current laptop I have is a Dell XPS M1210, a 2006 laptop. So this laptop seems like it wouuld be an excellent upgrade.
Your reviews are fantastic! This or the Yoga though? I know the Xps is a little more but which one did you like better? Also is there anything on the horizon I might want to wait for if I'm not in a hurry? Are you gonna review the Acer W700? Sorry for all the questions :)
I bought this tablet though there are a few things that are missing that shouldn't really be: Ethernet cable slot, fingerprint scanner, SD Card slot, and 3 USB ports instead of two, Other than that the tablet looks great thought a little bit hard to flip open the screen.
Yes She is - Lisa PLEASE Review EVERY Product you can - You are one of the VERY Few left that Knows what they are talking about , NOT on the take from companies, or a FANBOY (FANGIRL in your case :-)) for Apple or anyone else - With You It Just is what it is - Thank You....
I made the upgrade while the $40 deal is still available and I chose for the full ISO file. This way, I made an installation disk for whenever I needed to reformat my computer. Since then, I've been running on a fresh install of windows 8 and there has been reports of performance and stability increases that are similar from when we went from Vista to Windows 7. So far these rumors have been pretty true for me so far. I've replaced the startmenu with Start8 (made by stardock) so it works fine
alright,so instead of being stubborn this time (screw me),I did my research and you're right. the aluminums look somewhat cheap though, but I'll stop there. I don't want to extend this any further.
Hi Lisa - I love your reviews. I am in the market for a tablet/laptop convertible for ereading, videos, music, and general use. Would you recommend the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro over the Dell XPS 12 or vice versa? I'm a fairly solid Dell person, but I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!! :)
Hi Ryan, i'm no expert but I had the same question XPS 12 or yoga 2 pro. I ended up going for the XPS 12 this week for a few reasons. First was the display. it seems like the yoga 2P is having trouble displaying yellow. I tried it out and wasn't impressed. Second was the build quality you can go to a best buy and try it out, but it felt like cheap plastic (sort of what Samsung did with the Galaxy, great specs - cheap feel). Then i borrowed a friends XPS 12 over the weekend and was sold. I liked the feel, its solid and well make. I really liked the screen flip, after which I was trying to flip the screen of laptops that wouldn't flip (lol). Its not the best if you want it as a regular tablet, a little to big, but to read at the table or on the couch worked well. I hope this helps.
Hi Bubble, Thank you for your thoughts. Do program menus look very small on the XPS screen? I agree with you about the Lenovo (even though I haven't actually seen it)...
Hi Ryan sorry didn't respond right away i just noticed your response. Program menus are noticeably small but not terrible small. Programs like office look better than Photoshop and the sort . For me it's not much of an issue as I use it mainly at school which is mostly papers, powerpoint and the like. I will say that the more i use it the more i like it. If you have any other questions please ask i will look out for notice icons on youtube.
I'm leaning towards it, it has twice the memory capacity (at max configuration, it's 512GB SSD, vs. the Helix's 256GB SSD) and has already been refreshed with Haswell. Same price for the maxed out specs too.
hello Lisa In terms of the performance witch one is better the Dell xps 12 or the vaio duo 11? I love to hear your opinion please, and thanks for all your amazing reviews.
Hey thanks for the good vid. I got some question: 1. How much is the vram of the Intel HD 4000? Can I set it to a higher one in BIOS ? And will Guild wars 2 work on this (low settings). I saw a macbook air with same hardware running guild wars 2 pretty good, but i guess the macbook air could have more vram with intel hd4000....
Hello! I like your review. I have a question, I am starting college (graphic design major) for the first time next month, and I'm not 100% sure what kind of laptop is right for me, but I've been fairly interested in this product. I don't know if I will even be using the laptop for any graphic design work, but I know I'll definitely be using it for microsoft word and all that. I use photoshop, and Sony Vegas for videos. I'm scared of wasting money......Do you recommend this product? Thank you
Hello Lisa, I apologize if you've already mentioned this in one of your previous videos or you get asked this a lot, but which do you prefer more? The Dell XPS 12 or the Lenovo Yoga? I am currently in search of a new computer and astounded by what both have to offer, yet at a loss where I cannot seem to decide which is of better value. Any input is appreciated, Thank you!
just look at the CPU, RAM, and SSD or not. It is not "xps 12" or "x230" that build PDFs, it is their internals. super easy to find which one has better ones for your budget
But the Lenovo Yoga 13 has 1 HUGE negative point: If in tablet mode, the keyboard is exposed, which is not nice if on a dusty or rough surface. I would say, the Dell is much better in this case.
dell xps 12 or thinkpad x230? I don't really think touch screen is a must and as a student I am more interrested in how fast it can build a pdf file with latextopdf than how it performs in games. The thinkpad is definitely cheaper I assume faster but has a lower screen resolution. All I want is a good keyboard and a screen with contrast.
Ms Lisa, I've been watching your reviews but I can't seem to decide on what laptop I should buy. I am college student, an aspiring writer, and occasional gamer and photo editor. Which do you think is the best choice for me in terms of performance, suitability for my current situation and battery life: Dell XPS 12 convertible or Macbook Air 13in? or do you have any other suggestions? (p.s I like the idea of convertibles)
Pity on the glossy screen. You haven’t done any review on anti glare film for laptops? Would be interesting to know if they are any good and how they stand up to the a real matte display.
Does the dell support active digitizers like the wacom pen? I really feel like most of these convertibles only support capacitive pens.... I need something good for note taking and something that runs a Core I5 and is a convertible :/ Seems like the Ativ pro is a good product for me, but just waaaay too overpriced in Denmark. about 2000 usd. Would you recommend waiting? I mean more products must be on their way out.
Lisa, what weight is it? How did you find holding it and using it as a tablet? I mean is it as light as a Galaxy note or iPad o is it heavier? I like the idea of these computers but if they are too heavy then there is not much point of having it as a tablet...
It's not about how well you take care of your laptop. All mass produced items (especially APPLE) are designed with planned obsolescence in mind. It will break, just like anything else. At least with the XPS 12 you get a better, higher res touch screen and the flexibility of tablet mode. Plus it's running windows, so it wasn't designed for old people and 5 year olds.
It will be fast for a laptop without professional graphic card. In any real world scenario I can see an architect working with at least 2 giant screens and graphic card like Quadro 4000.
Hey Lisa can you review fujitsu tablets and laptop-tablet hybrids ? I hear fujitsu make really great machines. But how do they compare to comparable win8 pro devices ?
Hello MobileTechReview, I'm caught between the Dell XPS 12 and Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 but the only difference I see between them is the price. Is there anything that the Dell XPS 12 has(that the Yoga 13 doesn't) which makes it more expensive than the Yoga 13?
Hello MobileTechReview, can you rest your handpalm on the screen while writing in OneNote with a stylus? Is it worth buying? Is the battery any good for taking notes during colleges?
Lisa.. Which ultrabook is better overall - The Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 or Dell XPS 12??? I can't decide between this two, both look and feel good but I'm also looking at their technical performance, pls reply ASAP, thank you.
There's way too many different convertible ultrabook designs out there right now to be sure that I will ever make the best decision. I'm gonna wait for the next generation of convertibles with Haswell CPUs before I pull the trigger. Plus, paying $1200 is way too much for a 128GB SSD device, and going up to $1400 for 256GB isn't too desirable either. Hopefully the state of things will be much more desirable in the next gen in mid-2013.
They are totally different "RT" isn't a full version of windows that you can run normal desktop apps. RT is aps from the windows store only. MS surface pro would be for comparable to the XPS 12.
Would you recommend this for digital textbooks for college? I was thinking about going with a tablet AND a laptop, but it seems I can save money if I just go with this instead.
I have a few questions. One is the controller SATA3? If so, how hard is it to unscrew and remove the SSD myself? Do I have to remove layers and layers or is it just the bottom cover? Also, in terms of hardware what kind of bugs are there that can't be fixed through future driver updates? I'm currently using the t4410 from fujitsu but with the extra battery, its super heavy. My trackpad is glitchy and the hook that keeps my closed to broken.
For people who are worried about the glair that comes from the glass, I'm pretty sure you can buy a standard anti-glair cover for this. They're pretty cheap I believe and they come in different sizes. I had one before and it basically just sticks to your screen.

I've got one of these XPS12's en route to me right now. My first ever top of the line, brand new laptop. I'm so excited! Your review is awesome!
Yes, we'll review the Acer W700 very soon. The XPS 12 is flashier and has an even better display though the Yoga 13's display is quite good. The Yoga is bigger and feels moe like a standard laptop. I'd lean towards the Dell, though the spinning display mount scares me a little.
Yes, there are USB Ethernet adapters on the market that will work just fine.
The Duo 11 gets you both touch and the digital pen, as far as I know with the X230T you still have to pick one or the other. The Duo also has a higher res display. But the ThinkPad has a much better keyboard.

You spend time with the product and it's reflected in the high quality of these reviews. As a tech junkie and "power user" I felt obligated to say THANK YOU! to you and you're team.
The Vaio Duo 11 and XPS 12 have the same CPU options, graphics chip, RAM and SSD options, thus performance is very similar.
The MBA 13" and XPS 12 would be work fine for those tasks. If you want a touchscreen, get the Dell. If you have a fancy for convertibles, get the Dell.
Yes, you can run Visual Studio and do programming on the XPS 12 and other Ultrabooks with a Core i5.
I have yet to find any person or channel that does better reviews of mobile products. Detailed, unbiased and tailored to real-world usage. Keep it up!
Looking forward to haswell review. Also has synaptic trackpad :). Already ordered btw
All Ultrabooks and Intel Core i5 Windows machines can run MS Office just fine.
I like the ports on the Vaio Duo 11 like Ethernet, HDMI and VGA but I much prefer the Dell's keyboard. Depends on which matters more to you. The Vaio is a little bit lighter too (4 ounces).
Umm, not it's not a Bluetooth keyboard and it's attached via wires internally.
With a touchscreen and 13" or under, no models with dedicated graphics at this point.
Thats the main reason I ordered :)

can't argue about the screen, it's fantastic, currently using a 24" dell IPS monitor, fantastic also.
Ultrabooks with integrated graphics aren't a great pick for current 3D games. You'll be able to play those two on lower resolutions and settings only.
i have had this machine for 4 years now. wonderful piece of technology. Had a swollen battery issue which needs replacing but otherwise, great machine. Wows the friends. Cant buy it anymore so i am keeping it as something uniquely made.
You are truly the best tech reviewer on youtube these days.
You "can" use any device in any way you want. The point was that it's not built with that position in mind. The Lenovo has a grip texture to it's edges that will keep it from sliding. I'd be hesitant to use tent mode on any slick surface, one bump from an outsider and your $1k+ device is sliding off the edge.
in response to no tent, if you have it in "laptop mode", flip the screen around then spin the machine around 180 so the screen is facing you, you can use it like a tablet thats propped up, like tent would be
It doesn't work with my Wacom or N-Trig pens. No active digitizer.
Yes (though suboptimal solutions) - Intel HD4000 supports 3 independent displays.
Since there's only one Mini-DisplayPort though:
per USB (USB-monitor, adapter or external solution ala Matrox)
per DisplayPort 1.2 MST daisy-chaining (specific displays or (still not available) hubs)
per Intel Wireless Display 3.0
Lisa! Another excellent review, thank you for covering this device. I ordered mine quite some time ago (i7, 256 SSD) and I was just told that it shipped from Dell this morning. Your review covers a lot of the features for me, so thanks for that! Have a very Happy New Year! - - Mike

$699 at Microsoft Store and online today. Great price, great computer!!!
I bought this tablet though there are a few things that are missing that shouldn't really be:
Ethernet cable slot, fingerprint scanner, SD Card slot, and 3 USB ports instead of two,
Other than that the tablet looks great thought a little bit hard to flip open the screen.
yeah, stop hesitating and switch, you'll love it in 2 days tops.

I would like to see an updated review on the New XPS 12 with Intel Haswell. Need not to cover fully, just the improvements made will do.
Would the surface be better than this?
Just got confirmation from a Dell rep that the new Haswell XPS 12 has support for wacom pens ! :)
I made the upgrade while the $40 deal is still available and I chose for the full ISO file. This way, I made an installation disk for whenever I needed to reformat my computer.

The XPS 12 with Haswell was released today, you should've waited
No digital pen support here.
Best review on utube till now!! Can u pls review xps18 too?!

As always I really enjoy your reviews, thank you Lisa!
Very thorough review. I like all the detail. Keep it up.
nice review..but would be really great if you could summarize your reviews in the end by mentioning PROS and CONS.

I think you struly are the best reviewer out there
Keep it going.
BTW, I don't know if you have already but could you do a review of thee ASUS U500?
Ms Lisa, I've been watching your reviews but I can't seem to decide on what laptop I should buy. I am college student, an aspiring writer, and occasional gamer and photo editor. Which do you think is the best choice for me in terms of performance, suitability for my current situation and battery life: Dell XPS 12 convertible or Macbook Air 13in? or do you have any other suggestions? Thanks for that excellent review. I am now off to order one!
I mean more products must be on their way out.
if you buy an ultrabook, you buy it because it suits your needs, just like everything else for that matter, no one is forcing you into buying it.
Medium settings without AA - avg. 30-40fps (@720p)
Just check HD4000 benchmarks for other games.
When you said there's a lock on the side did you mean a Kensington lock or an actual lock for the screen?
Lisa absolutely love your reviews.. your do proper justice to tech..
I'll find out for you for sure when I get my Galaxy Note 2 in the mail (I'm using the XPS 12 right now)...I wouldn't get my hopes up though
Lisa.. Which ultrabook is better overall - The Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13 or Dell XPS 12??? I can't decide between this two, both look and feel good but I'm also looking at their technical performance, pls reply ASAP, thank you.
Let me try to understand this. It is essentially just a tablet connected to a bluetooth keyboard with all those extra magnets stuff. How creative!!!
Interesting how would you define a tablet specifically in terms of design and the looks?
I have a few questions. One is the controller SATA3? If so, how hard is it to unscrew and remove the SSD myself? Do I have to remove layers and layers or is it just the bottom cover? Also, in terms of hardware what kind of bugs are there that can't be fixed through future driver updates? I'm currently using the t4410 from fujitsu but with the extra battery, its super heavy. My trackpad is glitchy and the hook that keeps my closed to broken.
You are doing a great job reviewing gadgets
