I think the most expressive of the “free reed” instruments are the harmonica and the bandoneon. The very thing that make them confusing to learn is what makes them expressive. They are both bisonic. They breathe.
Hi Mitch, you are right. The interesting thing is that, if you look at a "plate" of a bandoneon (the metal support for the reeds) it looks like an harmonica. Many think that the expressive sound of the bandoneon is due to the fact that in this instruments all the reeds are placed together on the same plate, differently from the accordeon, for example.
Would you say is better to go straight for the bandoneón or starting with a concertina eases your way into it? I play several instruments and sing, but never tried anything in that category of instruments...
Hi Gaby, if your goal is playing bandoneon, and tango maybe, go straight for it. Even if the bandoneon is part of the concertinas family, it is a different instrument, with different layout, and different possibilities.
