I was never a fan of BAR and I got in trouble when there was one guy who had fond memories working there. I felt really bad for shit talking them all that time to him and couldn't apologise enough. He got to live the dream whereas I'm sat behind a laptop. I still think they had the best joke going in F1 at the time with "What's the difference between BAR and a cocktail stick?" A cocktail stick has two points." I got so sick of seeing Nick Fry on the TV screen that whatever way I felt about BAR - good or bad - he would make it a whole lot worse talking about "Jenson's bad luck."
Or Martin Brundle's one when the two British American Racing cars were chasing a car ahead then Button managed to overtake and Sato was still chasing "Is that a Honda sandwich or is it a BAR snack"
Ah yes, BAR. A beautiful livery from a questionable company. I loved the 2004 and 2005 cars, but their earlier designs were also pretty good (a little bias from me due to the fact that they sponsored Tiscali also lol) Great review as always! Can't wait to see which livery you'll be covering in the near future. Cheers!
I have to confess that 'split' livery they had in their first car might be one of my favourites, not least for it's fun creativity. Another great video thanks!
Same to me... Wish that today's teams, like alphatauri recently, could make a bigger creative thinking and create (and race) with different car liveries... That would be fun!
McLaren could bring it back, due to their partnership with BAT. Instead of that pasty blue on the sidepods, they could have the deep blue with the starry sky with 555 logos on it (or cresent moons in countries where tobacco advertising is banned).
The ones where they replaced the Lucky Strike logo with the circles (like at 6:58) were my personal favorites. Though I liked this team, too bad that they were just a midfield team. 2004 was a great year for them
BAR round 04 has the best fucking merchs, so much wit and details, fondly remembers the umbrella that says "wet track", and a temperture sensitive mug that says "warm up"
The 1999 BAR is IMO the best BAR cause the singular liveries they tried to run were fantastic, and the split livery isn’t even that bad, and in fact it’s my favorite besides the early 2000s Ferrari’s and the Brawn GP car
I was born in 2001 and used to watch F1 with my father in ~2003-2005. Its funny how strong advertising really works, i havent seen the Lucky Strike livery for years but when you showed it it immideatly brought back clear memorys of the car in races back then. I especially remember the Lucky Strike writing on the rear Spoiler :) I have never smoked and never will, but i think it was sad seeing the Sponsors beeing kicked out. Tobacco brands and F1 cars are just so connected to me, it just works...
The BAR liveries demonstrated just how much tobacco was involved in F1 right into the 21st century. Still have a model of the 2001 BAR Honda 003 driven by Olivier Panis.
I remember this team as being a bit toxic. The attitudes of Villeneuve and Pollock in particular. Perhaps what added to it was that they were seen as main rivals to Jordan (also with Honda engines) who happened to be the most loved underdog F1 team.
British American Tobacco had huge plans for this project - they were so convinced that they will win races right off the gate, but ended up pointsless. And Jacques Villeneuve went from the next big thing in F1, winning the title in his second season (with a Newey-designed Williams) to a mere backmarker. And his BAR years kinda exposed him as a driver - he has become the type of drivers who can't be compettitive unless they have compettitive car (like the Williams FW18 and FW19). He got beaten by Jenson Button, but by then his buddy Craig Polock was no longer calling the shots - instead it was David Richards from Prodrive/Subaru WRC fame (BTW BAT sponsored Subaru/Prodrive through the 555 brand). Sure, Jacques did his best, but he'd never replicate the glory days from Williams with BAR, which was built around him from the start.
Jacques Villeneuve wasn't a bad driver. I remember he often had the fastest time in the speed traps. but only the true exceptional drivers can make a slow car go fast (like Senna with Lotus, Schumacher with early bennetton, Alonso with Minardi/renault). Most of the other World Champions were pretty average when they had average cars (Hakkinen, Vettel, Piquet, Hill, etc.)
i find it strange in the formula1 sponsor ship rules . i understand and support the non tabacco sponsor rule . but i think newer rules most be made to also ban alcohol sponsorships.
Irony of all this is... banning tobacco sponsorships caused the teams to not afford testing and many are so low un budged that they cannot upgrade at all , some even going under completely.. Yet more and more people smoke these days in total than back in 90's and early 2000's … But all the great liveries have included either alcohol or tobacco branding in them.. in my eyes that is just low to ban them. But then those same old cars are driving on pre race events and are on pictures all around the event weekend.. double standards .. Rally is going true same issues and motorsports in general.. in my eyes.. if team wants to get the image of showing tobacco livery on their car.. let them have it .. after all they are trading the healthy life style imago to money to keep going .. and at least i do not know anyone who has started smoking because they saw an add on side of car or even on roadsign add's/ tv adds when i was younger. I started smoking to impress girl that i fancied as teen ager.. smoked from 20 ish years and then quit .. but at any point i did not choose my brand of poison according to adverticement and sponsors on cars or any other add visible in media. i how ever bought single cartoon of silver west in 98 after Hakkinen won his championship to have it as memorabilia on my room. Never even smoked them.
i myself have been faced with this situation, cuz i had one of mine blocked on several countries as well, luckily on my end it got lifted by RUclips itself since i don't monetize my videos.
Small error: You said at the end: one of the finest F1 teams never to win a official grand prix. They did actually win one, with Jenson Button Hungary 2006.
I wish you were right, because I would’ve cried tears of joy if BAR Honda had won a race. Button at Imola (pole and a blisteringly fast first stint), Button at Nurburgring (14th to 2nd), and Sato at Indy (I recall some serious Ferrari chicanery around the safety car) were the near misses. But even so, it was amazing to finally see Honda F1 win again as a factory team in 2006. I used to stay up to watch F1 races in those days, but that one I fell asleep before the race and watched it on DVR, already knowing Honda and Button had won.
people really dislike the split livery but I like how it's a middle finger to the fia
Sean Onraet yeah, i get why ppl don’t like, but props to designers to cleverly make compromise to satisfy BAT
@@Maarcis12 All in all it was creative (though the catrtoony zipper is god awful) and kudos for the designers for "killing two birds with one stone"
It's gorgeous imo only bit I dislike is the zipper but hey
Same :)
Hehehe, BAR, good memories, it’s always the team i pick up on F1 Challenge 99-02 on my PC, also the “split personality” is one of my favs
I wish I could play as them in career mode in the console version
Villeneuve actually finished 3rd twice in 2001- in Spain and Germany.
Again, gotta give props to ya, mighty fine research has been done to it
Been hanging out for a new video in the series and I wasn't disappointed.. Can't wait for the next one.
This seems to be one of the F.I.A's most hated teams.
Funnily enough, the team is now Mercedes

JT-92 it’s would have been quite good but the zipper ruined it

I have a soft spot for the 555 liveries for being the sponsor for my childhood favourite team, the 555 Subaru World Rally Team.
The Deep Blue 555 Livery I think is a thing of beauty. A shame the idea wasn't pursued after 1999.
McLaren could bring it back, due to their partnership with BAT. Instead of that pasty blue on the sidepods, they could have the deep blue with the starry sky with 555 logos on it (or cresent moons in countries where tobacco advertising is banned).
BAR gave so many great memories. Love these old liveries, especially that classy white and red combo with Honda.
Those BAR colour schemes were cool. Certainly one of the best looking uniforms and race suits. Really digging this channel dude. Keep it up.
Cheers mate!
This is the first video I've watched of yours. It was great! I never knew about Anthony Davidson's 555 test livery, which incidentally looks awesome.
Thanks Matt. Yeah that 555 livery looked awesome!

Well made and well put together video very good work
I'll always be salty about BAR 1999 because that initial Lucky Strike livery was just stunning
The 555 one was good as well
Totally agree mate.

'99 my all time favorite one
Interesting fact in 06 from Hungary to the end of the season, jenson button in the BAR Honda scored more points than anyone else
RIP BAR Honda team after 2005 season
I love the 99 livery, its so different and that is what makes it beautiful

You didn't mention why they kept red circle without "Lucky Strike" during 2001-2002, did you ?
Hell yeah, you're back!!!

The team which ruined Jacques Villeneuve’s career
Correction BAR first podium was actually at the 2001 Spanish Grand Prix and not at 2001 San Marino Grand Prix.
Good call. Once again Wikipedia makes me look like a fool :-)
Such a shame that they never had a full year with the 555 livery. Unironically one of the best looking liveries from that era
Always liked the 555 livery for BAR.
A very memorable livery and great video as always
My favorire one is Jenson's dont walk livery. Always picked B.A.R. in F1 2004

Can you also create a history for one of the most complicated team liveries of all time?
Ferrari
Definitely :-)
Never clicked so fast, nice man
The 2000 livery looks like the 1999 Stewart
I really like this team. They hold the land speed record of a formula 1 car (just under 400kph over 2 runs) Incredible team
Beautiful footage!
Can I please get an email of the owner to discuss possible use in a documentary I'm involved in?
Thanks, Sam
cigarette sponsored liveries always look the best
The FIA should’ve allowed BAR to race two separate liveries. That would’ve been cool.
Awesome vid bro!
Can you do a video about Spyker F1 team/ Force India/ Racing Point? :)
Cheers! And, yes I'll be covering Force India soon :-)

I can be a little of a wiseguy, but BARs first podium came at the Spanish GP, not the San Marino GP
Nice video and i hope you continue making cool videos
Thanks, and I will be making plenty more videos :-)
Love these!
IMO BAR had some of the best livery in F1 history...
bar honda had some of the best liveries in f1 history, imo.
Keep up the good work👍🏼👍🏼
This probably has been said before, But on the thumbnails the 'F1 Livery Histories' text is cut out.
First person to mention it! I'll look into it :-)
But other than that, I'm really enjoying the series. And the thumbnails are simple, but very effective. Keep on going!

Nice one. Tanks for puting my youtube on some forums. Got partnership back. Your name will still be @ the end of my video's.

The subtitles said "Tobacco Burn" instead of "Tobacco Ban"

That was already under the Honda name
By 2006 the team was named Lucky Strike Honda Racing F1 Team. NOT BAR.
