Troy, I never knew there was a cold water cichlid hmm interesting. You could keep these guys with white clouds than. I thought goldfish were the only cold water fish. I will have to take a look at these in the future. Thanks man.
Last winter, I put some baby gymno geos outside in a tub, temp dropped to 40F, they seem to semi hibernate in that cold water, they will kind of eat during the day when it is warmer. But once they come back indoors in spring, they show brilliant color even at a small size.. These are great fishes.
I bought a group of terrapurpura from Ken a couple years ago and I keep them in a 55 gallon tank on our patio. I have a great brood of juveniles that I reared in a 20 gallon in our bedroom, and was planning on selling them, but we’ve fallen in love with them, my wife is even excited to have another tank setup as they are so charismatic and colorful. The outdoor tank stays in the 50s through the winter and it gets pretty hot during the summer when they really color up and spawn. I’ve lost a couple of them, where half their face turns black and they just sort of waste away. I wonder if I’ve taken them through too much of temp swings? I’ve kept them with white clouds and Florida flag fish, even when they spawned they almost ignore the other species, but do get pretty mean with each other. Very very cool fish, and really great that we’ve got such pretty cichlids that we can keep without heaters. It would be nice to see more of the plecos and whiptails imported to the states from the subtropical south to have some sucker mouth tank mates, if anyone knows of any it would be nice to know. Was thinking of getting some hillstream loaches to go with the new unheated indoor tank.
I have a fish that looks kind of similar to this one. When I bought them from the pet store one employee told they was a peacock. At the same store another employee said they was blue eye sajica. I had a similar issue like that with a hi fin bull shark. What’s the best way to determine what type of fish u have in cases like this?
Hi Troy, I have a balzanii with my red head tapajos, I also have another aquarium with comet goldfish. Should I then put the balzanii into the goldfish tank for 3 months or just have the balzanii in there permanently. Comet tank is 62F, tapajos is 77F?
What other smaller species can be kept at these temps as tank mates? I agree these are very interesting but trying to think of what other fish can also handle the lower temps
@jetsesverzamelaarlk8214 I'm still tryna figure out how this works, because I do plan on setting up a 75 gal with those fish. So as of late, I've been doing research about the gymnos
This video came out at the perfect time! I’m about to get an 88gallon tank and wanted a Balzanii. Can they be kept together with the smaller Rhabdotus or Terrapurpura? What counts can I do in an 88 gallon tank?
Gymnogeophagus Balzanii fantastic beautiful fish with extraordinary body shape and behaviour, their way of moving that makes them so beautiful wanted worth of watching. And when You get them from good source they have amazing colours not only yellow but also red and blue especially on theirs fins. I saw one male that got such beautifull coulors, but it tried to be kept without heater and in the room was temperature 17 degrees celsius, and the fish got problems. In some books They say that they are bred and kept with warm water fishes and it's difficult to keep them then without heater. The best for me is get them from wild and keep properly maybe without heater.
It's odd but I have 2 balzanii that have only ever been in my unheated tank with 5 fancy goldfish and 3 dojo loaches. All the fish are doing amazing together. I love this tank.
Okay, Troy, I have an empty 29-gallon tank what would you do with it? I was thinking mabey a guppy paradise, rams and rummynose, what would you do other than shelldwellers.
Hi there is someone that is stealing some of ur videos, just wanted you too know. And from what i have seen he has stolen some yt shorts. The channel name is "mr. fish"

Red eye tetras and peppered Cory's come from the same areas as the balzanii. If your looking for a biotope. Love the gyms.
What's up Troy!

Love to hear it, they're super underrated in my opinion!

Awesome! I think as long as the pond doesn't freeze over, they'll probably do just fine.
Hey. Just so you can add to your list, gymnogeophagus meridionalis. I'm raising a couple of wild caught ones down in Bs As, Argentina.

At 00:52 what sort is that bleu fish in the background? Can that sort also keep at lower temperaturen?
Electric blue acara
Strange this is a tropical warm water fish(?). And the Gymnogeophagus is colder water? Please some help! How this works?

I am also want to start a unheated aquarium from that size. Main species Gymnogeophagus. But other interesting species i find difficult to find..::
How much did you drop the temperature for the winter simulation ? And for how long?
To about 65 F for 3 months

Yep definitely! I’d do maybe just 1 balzanii, but could do 2-5 of the smaller species for sure
@@CichlidBros thanks so much!
I would like to know that if can I keep a pair of ECB , 3 geophagus and a severum together in a 50 gal tank ? Expecting an ans.
50 gallon is a bit small for an adult severum, but the others would be fine
@@CichlidBros thanks a ton.

They likely love the colder temps!
Hello. Where do/did you buy your South Americans from?
Tangled up in cichlids
Thank you

Rams or apistos with tetras would be my recommendation!
@@CichlidBros cool, that will be an awesome winter project 😎

You mentioned in an earlier video that you that your Balzani was a female. It was a male. I have both. Beautiful fish.
