When Julieta said "You've always been hard on Mirabel" in a nice way I felt like she wanted to stand up for Mirabel but also not wanna argue with (her) mom
That's her nature. She's honest but she's also very kind and passive. She'll say what matters. I'd know because I'm like that.
Still, that contributed to Alma's abuse of Mirabel. When your own mother is unable to make the effort to stand up to her own mother for your sake, over time she only adds a crack more
@@naiaracruseno9868 true enough. But it’s not just about her being her mother but also the matriarch of the family. Most people don’t get it. You don’t argue with the matriarch.

Just like Disney Tangled parents or any other parents that Disney didnt killed off and still alive.
Julieta and Agustin legit let Abuela mold their kids into tools for years though, and even let her project purposes onto themselves and make them feel useless if they couldn’t keep up. They might have tried to be encouraging, but they straight up failed. Their kids didn’t even come to them wrong their problems, probably because they knew they wouldn’t stand up to Abuela.
I dunno. Moana had pretty good parents (even if her dad was pretty overprotective).
And most parents in Pixar are actually pretty great. That being said, yes they are great parents.

@@safeplace3333 :Dn't
When Abuela said "Think of the family!" That shows she never considered Mirabel to be part of the family. Since she never received a gift, Mirabel just.. Existed. Abuela never saw her as part of the family, despite Mirabel loving it just as much, probably more than Abuela.
No? What Alma means by family is Madrigal's pride. She doesnt even care about Isabela, all she care about is a "perfect life" for her and Isa should be happy for that.
Replace "family" with "reputation" and that's basically the root of Abuela's problem for most of the movie.
She felt that Mirabel damaged the family's reputation due to not having a gift.
The fandom's obsession with turning a traumatised latina woman with unhealthy coping mechanisms into an unloving villain is suspicious.
@@imthecoolestguyalive I'm from Brazil and most of the Brazilians I know who watched the movie do not considered abuela that lovable. Most of them say being traumatized is not an excuse to abuse others and I 100% agree. The only thing that sounds like gringo bs is that she shouldn't be forgiven. The fact she admits it's her fault, apologies and tries to be better is already a miracle, it never happens in latin american families.
The only part where we think it's unrealistic is her fight with Mirabel and she doesn't beat up her grandaughter hahaha *cries*
That's because the core theme of the movie is that Abuela doesn't seem the family as "individual people* she sees them as their gift and the reputation the gifts gave the family. Bruno and Mirabel "ruined" that.
I honestly hated her character, she needed to be called out a lot sooner, and lot more harshly for what she did.
The fact that Disney could've made their parents negative, abusive, or worse. But instead they made them actually loving parents and people.

And for being the one to stand up to Abuela
I love how as someone who’s always been a normal human and grown up as such, Agustin effortlessly sees Mirabel as still worthwhile regardless of whether she has a gift or not. Most people get by just fine without a gift, so can she!
And BOY when he said he was thinking about my daughter, that’s Agustin saying that Mirabel IS a part of the family, because ‘Family’ is more a nebulous whole and separate entity, an idea, with no room nor consideration for the individuals, not even Alma herself.
I agree with your interpretation of "I was thinking of the family" because Alma sees "the family" as a larger concept that DOES include Mirabel but doesn't really respect her as an individual.
In the french version, he even says to Abuela " Oh, sorry to thinking of my daughter "
Abuela saying "Think of the family!" wasn't the only time she showed what she actually thought of Mirabel. Later, during their fight, recall how she said "I don't know why you weren't given a gift, but it's not an excuse to hurt this family". Notice she said *"this"* family, not *"our"* family - basically excluding Mirabel. I still think Abuela was forgiven too easily.
Edit: Forgot to mention: remember how she blamed Mirabel for the fact that Bruno left? Yeah, she was REALLY forgiven too easily
Edit 2: I just wanted to add that while I love both movies, I like Encanto a little bit more than Coco, because Agustín and Julieta actually stand up for their daughter instead of just dealing with the matriarch's toxicity because "respect your elders"
Exactly, that’s what I kinda hated about the movie: They forgave Abuela too easily. She basically treated Mirabel as an outsider due to her not having a gift, therefore not being useful or special in her eyes. She even tried to exclude her from Antonio’s ceremony and even looked bothered when Antonio wanted Mirabel to walk with him. Abuela had the nerve to call out Mirabel and accuse her of trying to remove everyone’s gift and even blame Bruno for leaving the family because “he never loved them”. I do understand that she’s just afraid to lose her family just like how she lost her dear husband, but that isn’t an excuse to pick favorites, gaslight your grandchild and pin the blame on them
@@mr.dickbutttheog2064 Yes, this is exactly what I'm talking about. She hated on Bruno because his gift "wasn't useful", then when he left, she blamed Mirabel for it when Bruno specifically said he left to *protect* Mirabel. Also, she was 5 when Bruno left. *5!* How would it be a 5-year-old's fault?!
@@WaterDrinkingHydroDragon Yeah, that’s what I hated. Abuela was basically putting the whole blame on Mirabel for the reason why Bruno left when in reality, he left so he could protect Mirabel from finding the truth and the other was that he already had a bad reputation due to his future-seeking powers (Which Abuela never bothered to defend him when others looked at him as if he’s a monster). She didn’t even put a stop on everyone refusing to acknowledge Bruno’s existence and treat him as a demon. I also blame Pepa for overreacting and assuming that Bruno sabotaged her wedding on purpose, also fully participating in the whole refusing to talk about nor acknowledge Bruno’s existence. He was trying to tell her that she needs to calm down and relax, but to her, he was “trying to cause problems for her big day”. Julieta, her husband (Forgot his name), Antonio and Mirabel were the only ones who actually kind for Bruno
@@mr.dickbutttheog2064 Julieta's husband is Agustin, his name is in the title of the video which is at the top of your screen in the tab.

You know, I just thought that Julietta did not really argue with her mother, not speaking completely what she thought, because, in the end, Alma would put the blame of that argument on Mirabel.
I bet she was a bit afraid of Alma, too, since her whole life she had to do whatever she said.
Thats what we call “When parents use fear instead of discipline”
Yes! She's the kind of people who avoid confrontation but you know she doesn't want to be like Bruno who was abandoned by their family.
Yes! The subtle nuance behind every family member's various actions and behaviors is super cool to see. Since Julieta is a healer both literally and figuratively, she's not going to cause a major confrontation, even if it leads to problems simmering under the surface (like Alma's treatment of her daughters)
I wouldn't say she is afraid, it's more that she doesn't want to argue and her personality it's more passive. So she tries yo reason with her mother but Alma always has the excuse of thinking "about the family"
My favorite is when he runs after Luisa after the dinner scene. He’s trying to take care of all his daughters 🥺

I feel like if we get more Encanto we should talk about how each of the Madrigals feel regarding Alma's abuse, giving each of them nuanced reactions. Julieta is angry at her mother for the unhealthy expectations that were put on them, and the abuse Mirabel received but also understands the trauma Abuela faced. Agustin is understanding towards his wife's perspective but can't forgive Alma. Peppa is very understanding of Alma and justifies certain elements of the abuse, considering that Peppa's weather powers are tied to her emotions, so she had to stay calm to avoid getting them all killed, she is still angry at the abuse, but understands elements of it. Felix is trying to be supportive of Peppa but also disagrees with her on some level. Bruno is angry because not all of prophecies were meant to be easily understood, and the time in the wall did make him sour to Alma as he partially foresaw the expectations that her abuse would cause the family. Dolores is kinda in the middle, she's heard everyone's side on the issue and heard every tear that Alma shed for Pedro, but also has heard all the tears the other family members shed because of the abuse. She doesn't support what Alma did but she understands the reasons why it happened, but she also feels like she can't choose one side. Luisa is very angry about all the pressure she was under and did feel somewhat sympathetic towards Mirabel. Isabella is angry for how she was expected to marry someone she didn't love and how she was stifled into only making pretty flowers forever. Camillo understands Alma's reasons for doing what she did and wants to help her. Mirabel is supportive of her grandmother changing but is still disappointed by Alma's behavior and is still hurt by the memories of how she was treated for not having a gift. Antonio feels weird about taking a side as he's a child and doesn't understand the nuances, he is somewhat disappointed with how Alma treated Mirabel, but also understands that she was influenced by her own pain. Alma is all over the place. She is genuinely sorry for what she's done and feels like she can't forgive herself for what she's done, but on some small level she wants to. She understands that her pain motivated her, but that it doesn't excuse what she's done but also wants the others to understand her perspective. I want there to be a nuanced discussion where the family actually has complex reasons for their perspective on Alma's actions.
I feel like all this would happen during the rebuilding of Casita
Alma was not abusive. Toxic? Absolutely, but certainly not abusive
Pepa*
@@jayy17783 mentally abusive. She did not physically harm them herself but her actions caused them mental and physical pain.
@@jayy17783 I think emotional abuse is a fair classification of this. Sure, it's not physical, but the emotional damage her toxic behaviors caused was ongoing, had consequences, and then were continued by her as her children grew up and had her own kids. Toxic behaviors for that long a period counts as emotional abuse in my book. That said, she's still not a bad person or a villain. She's a traumatized person with a good heart, which is clear because she actually apologized and changed for her family after being confronted with her mistakes. If only that could be the ending for real life dysfunctional family situations. Though, perhaps I'm too cynical. I'm sure it can be, I've just yet to see it myself, sadly.
Agustin is what every TV or movie dad should be. Clumsy, not stupid, and more than willing to put himself in a fight to protect his family. Absolute King

Okay so that kid can talk to animals right?????? And bees are animals right!!!!!!!! So why couldn't that kid look at the bees and be like "hey stop stinging Agustin. He means well and doesn't mean to harm you." Just throwing that out there
Because Agustin was stung before he got the gift and after the magic died.
because antonio didnt get his gift yet that time
because Antonio secretly hates Augustin and actually commanded the bees to attack him

for real the way that agustins gets mad about his mother in law OMG Im so proud and julieta too you know!!
Anyone recall how Roger in 101 Dalmatians stood upto Cruella De Vil to protect the puppies ? It takes a great deal of courage to stand up to such a menacing woman. Abuela can't be compared to that devious woman. However depending on the way how she had suppressed all other family members dissent, it took great courage for Augustin to stand by his daughter!
Augstin and Felix are the definition of saying men written by women.
Even when Agustin saw Bruno's vision, he still didn't blame or shun Mirabel. He's pretty much like that one family member that walked in on their kid trying on a binder and, after hearing the explanation of the reason why, understands that this makes their child happy (which is what every good parent would want for their child), but they also know how "old school" the grandparent can be.
If Pepa walked in, she's probably make a fusion of a tornado and a hurricane.
If Abuela walked in, Mirabel would either be the next "We Don't Talk About Bruno" or she'd actually run away from home (with or without a letter).
If Isabela walked in, Mirabel and the whole Encanto movie won't hear the end of it.
If Dolores walked in... I'm pretty sure that, after understanding fully about the situation and how desperate Mirabel is on trying to fix it, she'd probably have another secret to keep. If she could hear Bruno's rats in the walls, knew that he never left, and not tell the family about it until his revealed appearance, she'd probably won't use this as an opportunity to ruin the proposal dinner.
I'm not sure about Camilo's reaction. I mean, during his part of "We Don't Talk About Bruno", he was gentle with his cousin. In fact, (unless if the deleted scenes show it) he has never made fun of, insulted, or stooped to Isabela's and/or Abuela's "low move" when he found out that he has only one cousin who didn't get a gift.
If Luisa walked in, her reaction would be the same as Camilo's. She never head-on blamed Mirabel when the donkeys were heavy.
Antonio... Well, when he was nervous about his gift ceremony, out of all of his close relatives to be there with him, he chose Mirabel. Plus, after finding Bruno's hideout (thanks to the rats talking to him) he still didn't shun Mirabel.
Julieta would also never blame or shun Mirabel. It wouldn't make sense for her to tell Abuela that she's "being too hard on Mirabel" and warn her about what happened to her brother after Casita started cracking, only to blame and shun her only daughter whom she adores so much.
The comments says Augustine litrally cared

I really appreciate the fact that the writers didn’t try to make the parents go against Mirabel and favor another kid, if that makes sense. Usually in movies when the main character feels out of place in the family, the movie shows all the other characters going against that person or not really caring about their needs. I hate how so many movies push the narrative that if you feel left out it’s because you’re not loved. You can be loved and still feel a little out of place. Mirabel loves her family and her parents can see how special and amazing she is, but Mirabel herself doesn’t fully accept that she’s special by just being her. I love how they didn’t make her mom hateful. It’s just very refreshing to see that although a movie has some drama, the drama doesn’t stem from a toxic place.
