Oh yeah new Wes video. I love your content man, you've really sucked me into the lore with how you present your content. The story about the sisters brought an actual tear to my eye
This video deserves a few, choice entries from "Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries," from the Schlock Mercenary webcomic, by Howard Taylor. 😁 #6: If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it. #25: If a manufacturer's warranty covers the damage you did, you didn't do enough damage. #34: If you’re leaving scorch-marks, you need a bigger gun. #37: There is no "overkill." There is only "open fire" and "reload." #55: It's only too many weapons if they're pointing in the wrong direction.
Keep in mind that not all space marines were the same size or strength, and their armor/ weapons would be somewhat tailored to fit them. That would help make sense of the wide array of gun size and caliber differences within the same weapon platform. For a general foot solider that is different. That would be more "one size fits all".
Hey Wes. Hope you’re doing awesome. Something you should mention when the bolter is explained next time is that it is indeed based on reality. We did make two stage munition in the real world and it turned out to be way too expensive and of course we have a long way to go to perfect it. But something was actually put into production. Unfortunately now famous due to Battlefield V (us tank enthusiasts liked the hipster status of knowing something so badass that not much of the world knows about) the Sturmtiger used two stage munitions. There’s actually footage of it being used in anger in the Siege of Warsaw Poland. Pretty exciting to see a 380mm rocket actually get used. So wide that small men can fit in its width.
Thanks for the video. I’m a cook and I routinely listen to your content while I’m in the kitchen prepping. I appreciate the distraction from the monotony.
Correction: the Tsar was the largest nuclear device ever detonated. We've made much more powerful explosives since then, we just haven't tested them out for fear of melting the polar ice caps or vaporizing nevada.
You skimmed over the most horrible part of Phosphex. They call it "living fire" because it is attracted to movement. It's basically fire that hunts you, is hot enough to burn through most protection (including Legion Armour) and can stay inert for very long periods of time before being awakened and coming back just as hot and angry.
Amazing video keep up the good work I have learnt so much from your videos and I don't get confused at the lore any more thank you and have a wonderful day
I have a question So as I look at space marine armour, I dont see anywhere they can hold their mags for their Boltgun so how do they even get more bullets or mags? And how did the Sister of battle or Commisar use their Boltgun?
The way they store their ammo has changed over time and differs from book to book. Most of the time extra clips are mag locked to their armor. Space Marines often will have utility belts as well, and in older lore the ammo and grenades was stored in compartments inside of the armor. That would eject whenever the space marine needed it
A lot of the sprues now have utility belts and pouches that you can add to the miniatures. As for the non-augmented humans such as guardsmen and the sororitas, they are using Ryza, Godwynn or mars pattern bolters (or patterns made on other forge worlds) theirs are smaller and have less recoil while still packing a comparable punch. Space Marines use Astartes pattern bolters which are made specially to be used in the hands of a space marine, far larger than that of those used by standard humans
21:07 the emperor's dandruff missiles reminds me of the comic irredeemable. Spoilers: in some later issues like a little more than half way, in order to beat him or at least contain plutonian who is the main antagonist, a group of aliens use teleportation tech to cleave his skin cells, then 3d print the skin cells and made a straitjacket out of plutonian's skin.
You don't hear of an outraged Astartes ever requesting his Battle Brothers bring him his Heavy Bolter, when the purging of GODDAMN HERETICS is needed... No. He wants to be brought his Flamer... his *Heavy Flamer!*
A reciprocating bolt can fire off rounds as fast as they can be physically loaded. The advantage of an electronic firing mechanism is stability for long range precision.
The meta-narrative of the bolter’s creation is interesting as well. GW deliberately wanted to make weapons that defied the sci fi tropes of the time. Instead of being an energy weapon; something advanced and elegant, it’s a brutal and bulky weapon that uses the same principles as a lot of modern weapons but bigger and more ludicrous.
and then they made energy weapons either really easy to maintain and make (laser) or ludicrously dangerous to the user and hard to make and maintain (plasma)
I'm currently building a Volkite squad. Thanks for the inspiration. Was thinking about how I'd build a heavy squad and BAM!!! Here comes WesHammer with the winning inspiration!!! THANKS!!!! 👍
I think the comparison between flamers and phosphex weaponry is the comparison between napalm and white phosphorus. Meltas I've always thought of like shaped charges, creating a molten jet of metal that outside the effective range is too cold to actually penetrate armour. Plasma weapons use magnets to make essentially balls of plasma that curl around themselves to travel through the air, which on impact release the heat and energy "trapped" inside the outer layer. I've also thought of plasma weapon overloads as the magnetic systems breaking under the strain of combat conditions, exploding as the "round" of gas in the magnetic chamber violently escapes through the weak point in the field. Personally, my favourite to field has always been the good ol' bolter. Back when I played (4th Ed) I ran a Black Legion army that generally favoured Berserkers for assault units, with heavy fire support from a Defiler or two and maybe a Predator, led by an undivided daemon prince who generally existed to wreck everyone's day but not as hard as the Bloodthirster possessed champion with an Axe of Khorne. He could tear through the most heavily armoured units without breaking a sweat, though there was nothing as sweet as running a squad of fairly cheap berserkers into a high-point cost unit of terminators and telling them their 2+ armour save was now 4+.
In Eternal Crusade (another wh40k shooter pvp game, god rest it’s soul), Meltagun and Multimelta fires a beam like fire burning through tanks and melts infantry armor(absurdly high damage) also leaving a hot-fiery burning after out of contact of the beam. Plasma weapons in EC has 2 firing modes, normal shots and the regular charged explosive shots, Plasma cannon charged shot acts almost like morta shots and is used regularly in a siege gamemode because how spammable and lethal it is.
I know I'm a little bit late, but I'd love to see a follow-up about the equivalent weapons of the Chaos Space Marines. The Thousand Sons' Soulreaper Cannon has always been a personal favorite of mine; it's basically an Assault Cannon - fun fact; the 40k wiki claims that the standard Assault Cannon has a rate of fire in the hundreds of rounds *per second* - but this variety fires Inferno Bolts. What are Inferno Bolts? They are a patented Thousand Sons invention; bolt shells that are ensorcelled and infused with the raw power of the Warp. When they explode, they release a gout of literal hellfire that is hot enough to *melt ceramite.* All Thousand Sons bolt weapons use Inferno Bolts, but none are quite as terrifying as the Soulreaper Cannon. If we take the "hundreds of rounds per second" thing at face value, well... you can only imagine what one of these things would do to a squad of loyalists. And it becomes even scarier when you take into account the fact that these things are being wielded by hollow automatons unconcerned with such mortal trifles as "suppressing fire" or "flesh wounds." Good luck putting it down before it puts you down.
Interesting thing thats not really noted by many people is that bolters come in different sizes. You have the Mars pattern for example thats .75 caliber ( used by space marines) and then you have the Diaz pattern used by Sororitas and other base line humans. Same with bold pistols and heavy bolters. They arent one size fits all. Ive been in the hobby since the Rogue Trader days ( ok,,lets show my age,,I started playing in 1989). In the lore it has explained somewhat about the different size and pattern bolt guns. Mars pattern for example are .75 caliber ( a little bigger than a shotgun shell) and in several places in the lore it has made mention of the Diaz being .45 to .50 depending on the writer. It has also been said that the heavy bolter has variable sizes too. One description for the space marine version firing a round as large as a soda can.
I remember how effective was melta weapons in Warhammer 40k Freeblade, the light melta weapon was able to destroy light vehcles instantly and heavy thanks in no more than 3-4 seconds.
Ironically, and I know that I tend to do this often, the Heavy Bolter (and all Bolt weapons) would not (at least, originally, see below) in fact have much recoil at all, because it uses gyrojet technology. The projectile is launched using a smaller charge, and then a secondary, more powerful, charge ignites after it leaves the barrel. Because the mass of the projectile is accelerated after leaving the muzzle of the gun, the recoil energy is dispersed into the atmosphere, rather than into the user's body via the length of the gun itself. It's a space-age version of a recoilless rifle or the prototype gyrojet guns developed in the sixties and seventies. It's another example of GW using fancy-sounding words without really understanding what they mean, or (more charitably, as alluded to above) those original ideas being lost in the wash over time.
Just one minor correction permethium doesnt ingit exposed to air it needs a spark or a large amount of heat to ignite, you see it a lot in the cain series
You're probably the most informing 40k personality because you don't just copy and paste what the lexicanum or the 40k wiki says. You find the little intriguing points that can be missed and extrapolate new original points too which is awesome.
Antimatter and matter annihilate, converting physical mass into energy. We've actually manufactured anti hydrogen in laboratory settings and anti matter weapons are theoretically possible today.
I like to live dangerously as plasma cannons have always been my favorite weapon on that list. Seeing a whole squad of enemies get blown up, only for your man to die next round is rollercoaster ride.
“After watching the video” Me(To Space Marine): “Space Marine? Is there a Portable weapon Variation, where I can shoot Angry Marines at my enemies?” Space Marine: “Uh?”
An anti-matter gun would be far more interesting than what you described. Imagine a bullet of antimatter causing an explosion the second it collides with the air in the atmosphere. Because it has a forward momentum it creates explosions along the entire trajectory - a literal shockwave cone of nuclear explosion heading right to the target with the final explosion on impact. On the receiving end you would not only be hit with a nuclear blast, but you would have a cone of nuclear blasts coming your way. The farther away - the weaker the damage, but it really doesn't matter as even if the initial impact just damages the armor of the object the cone that follows would deal assuredly lethal damage through radiation and explosion to a then unarmored target.
>Promethium burn instantly when in contact with air. >flamer weapon had a small jet of igniter on the bottom, under the barrel GW damnit, make up your mind😂
Thanks for the content man your one of my favorite channels. Thank you for all of your hard work, I hope good things come your way because you seem like the type that has good karma my brother. Take care and keep us entertained my friend.
The way Bolters work, they are basically delayed detonation, rocket propelled granade launchers. If i remember correctly, Bolters were inspired by Gyro-jet pistols which rather than use a casing filled with propelling smokeless powder, each bullet instead had a few small propellers which were both increasing its speed over distance to reach terminal velocity and aiding in rotating the bullet for stability purposes.
Hey weshammer love the vids keep doing these liger form videos i think they are really cool. Anyway I was Wondering if you could make a video on the maccabian janissaries witch is my personal favourite guard regiment.
11:25 It wouldn't be a railgun (which propels a metal slug) Weapons like these are called simply "Blasters", "Plasma Blasters", or "Plasma Accelerators". Some games like Fallout just call them Plasma Pistols. (or rifles)
I have started down the caliber rabbit hole, thanks to this, and annoyingly the best I've discovered is that "caliber" doesn't mean much. Most of what you see is a measurement of the round or barrel is fitted through. You'll see .45 ACP that is one of various 45 caliber rounds like the .45 Savage or .454 Casul. When you go and look at bigger guns you'll get things like 4"/50 which has a 200 inch barrel (50 calibers of length that are 4 inches each). I /think/ that 4" part is also indicative of projectile length but I have no idea. The short of it is that there is no uniform way of determining weapon caliber. Generally, you'd just be stating the diameter of the round you're slinging at the enemy. This doesn't always include length. So the mighty Astartes are lobbing 2.952 inch wide detonating rods at people. Since we have a picture we could likely determine the receiver size and thus the round (the whole thing), projectile, and casing lengths. From there payload could be determined relative to volume, destructive potential, and means of ignition. This, however, partially ignores the stated thruster on each bolter projectile, meaning we'd likely lose 1/3 of the projectile to thruster space and then there's the need of fuel. If it's shared for both sustained flight and explosive impact, shorter range engagements would lead to optimal bolter use. Long range shots would be possible but would lack the signature explosive effect.

Oh yeah new Wes video. I love your content man, you've really sucked me into the lore with how you present your content. The story about the sisters brought an actual tear to my eye
Brother bring the flamer, the Heavy Flamer.
WE BRINGERS OF DEATH
This video deserves a few, choice entries from "Seventy Maxims of Maximally Effective Mercenaries," from the Schlock Mercenary webcomic, by Howard Taylor. 😁
#6: If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it.
#25: If a manufacturer's warranty covers the damage you did, you didn't do enough damage.
#34: If you’re leaving scorch-marks, you need a bigger gun.
#37: There is no "overkill." There is only "open fire" and "reload."
#55: It's only too many weapons if they're pointing in the wrong direction.
There is no overkill but only MajorKill.
There’s also the principle of gyrojet weapons that were invented, but never used for anything serious due to their disadvantages.
Please make another obscure monsters and creatures of 40k or an animal of war hammer video I loved the first one ❤️
Can do!
@@weshammer Dinosaurs or anything on Catachan seem like a great start.
id like to see a space marine version of a lasgun
Damn I love every image and mention of Catachan and Deathwatch. Just the instant badassery is unparagonged
Thanks for the video. I’m a cook and I routinely listen to your content while I’m in the kitchen prepping. I appreciate the distraction from the monotony.
Youu are by far my favorite Warhammer RUclipsr. I love your deep lore videos, I learn so much and enjoy watching them.
Correction: the Tsar was the largest nuclear device ever detonated. We've made much more powerful explosives since then, we just haven't tested them out for fear of melting the polar ice caps or vaporizing nevada.
Really?
@@fatefulbrawl5838 I believe so. My comments after the fact were a little hyperbolic but you can google it.
When Nevada isn’t
There are Too many states nowadays anyway.
@@greysonjones5429 if they exist arent they just theoretical?
all the wepons here are amazing and terrifying at the same time but the emperors dandruff being weaponized takes the cake for me
You skimmed over the most horrible part of Phosphex. They call it "living fire" because it is attracted to movement. It's basically fire that hunts you, is hot enough to burn through most protection (including Legion Armour) and can stay inert for very long periods of time before being awakened and coming back just as hot and angry.
Amazing video keep up the good work I have learnt so much from your videos and I don't get confused at the lore any more thank you and have a wonderful day
I love your longer videos! It feels so easy for you to slide from topic to topic, you're a beast my friend!
"I dont know for you but for me the bigger the weapon is, the cooler" My guy, that is not an opinion, that is a universal Law.
-Sir, how big do we need to make the bolters?
-YES.
I have a question
So as I look at space marine armour, I dont see anywhere they can hold their mags for their Boltgun so how do they even get more bullets or mags?
@@ErikVonStrix3 oh ok thanks
@@weshammer Now I'm imagining clips magged all over their armor so brothers can just snag mags off each others backs.
The Answer is..... Warp Fuckery.
"So how do these new guns work?"
"Because I said so."- Cawl
21:07 the emperor's dandruff missiles reminds me of the comic irredeemable.
Spoilers: in some later issues like a little more than half way, in order to beat him or at least contain plutonian who is the main antagonist, a group of aliens use teleportation tech to cleave his skin cells, then 3d print the skin cells and made a straitjacket out of plutonian's skin.
Didn't think about it till hearing someone say it out loud, but a bolter is literally just a scaled down version of our modern naval guns
You don't hear of an outraged Astartes ever requesting his Battle Brothers bring him his Heavy Bolter, when the purging of GODDAMN HERETICS is needed...
No.
He wants to be brought his Flamer... his *Heavy Flamer!*
20:22 "Sir that grip is far too large, please calm down"
A reciprocating bolt can fire off rounds as fast as they can be physically loaded. The advantage of an electronic firing mechanism is stability for long range precision.
There are guns that have used rocket propelled bullets before (The Gyrojet) and we have been using explosive small arms ammunition since WW1.
For the warpath sponser: “you wouldn’t send a bunch of infantry against tanks” the death korps of krieg: FIX BAYONETS
Just something about a Heavy Bolter looks so satisfying!
Congrats on your win against major kill
(That donation even though you won was a gigachad moment)
“Deus Ex Mechanicus”
I liked that.
Saw the MAJORKILL colab. You killed!! Keep up the great art!! 🫡🫶
THANKS!!!! 👍
The muzzle of the bolter is probably just a flash hider, significantly wider than the barrel itself
16:46 Who do you think I am THE TAU
Congrats on the win in the trivia game man
In Eternal Crusade (another wh40k shooter pvp game, god rest it’s soul), Meltagun and Multimelta fires a beam like fire burning through tanks and melts infantry armor(absurdly high damage) also leaving a hot-fiery burning after out of contact of the beam. Plasma weapons in EC has 2 firing modes, normal shots and the regular charged explosive shots, Plasma cannon charged shot acts almost like morta shots and is used regularly in a siege gamemode because how spammable and lethal it is.
Could you do a video on the Manreaper Scythe? Big nurgle fan here
If you watch my recent video on Chaos terminators I talk about it briefly in the death shroud section.
@@weshammer thank you sir. Love your work
Me: I've just done 10 hours at work, I'm ready for bed
Also me: yes new weshammer video, grab the coffee
The heavy bolter basically fires a 1in diameter EM High Explosive Rocket boosted rounds. That's fucking metal.
But then again,,this is all dark sci fi /fantasy ,, so lets just enjoy it for what it is.
I remember how effective was melta weapons in Warhammer 40k Freeblade, the light melta weapon was able to destroy light vehcles instantly and heavy thanks in no more than 3-4 seconds.
@𝙆𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙮 4 i don't want to by mean with you dear, i don't asked and i don't have the moneys and i don't realy need but i wish but im not desperated. 😚☺️
How do I realize only now and thanks to you how well the phrase _"deus ex machina"_ fits the 40k universe?!
It's enigmatic.. 😅😅
Man if only my eyes weren't dilated else I could know what I was typing and see the nice images you put in the video
Ah yes the good old saying "Yeetus Deletus". Bigger Yeetus = more Deletus.
"It's a highly flammable compound that ignites the moment it's exposed to oxygen."
Kinda makes those prominent pilot lights redundant then doesn't it?
Congratulations on crushing my boy Majorkill! I didnt know you had it in you. Some sea turtles are going to be happy about this :)
Just one minor correction permethium doesnt ingit exposed to air it needs a spark or a large amount of heat to ignite, you see it a lot in the cain series
As an Orc Philosopher once said "Neva too much dakka"
You're probably the most informing 40k personality because you don't just copy and paste what the lexicanum or the 40k wiki says. You find the little intriguing points that can be missed and extrapolate new original points too which is awesome.
Antimatter and matter annihilate, converting physical mass into energy.
We've actually manufactured anti hydrogen in laboratory settings and anti matter weapons are theoretically possible today.
Well the Geneva convention got thrown out the window pretty quickly 😂😂😂
I like to live dangerously as plasma cannons have always been my favorite weapon on that list. Seeing a whole squad of enemies get blown up, only for your man to die next round is rollercoaster ride.
Hint: It wouldn't be called "100 caliber" because caliber is 1/100s of an inch. Heavy bolter rounds would simply be an inch wide.
Imagine a Custodes using a vacuum cleaner on the Emperor to collect the dust
“After watching the video”
Me(To Space Marine): “Space Marine? Is there a Portable weapon Variation, where I can shoot Angry Marines at my enemies?”
Space Marine: “Uh?”
Dude forgot that the plasma cannon also has a full auto mode if you count 4 -6 seconds between plasma shots.
Napalm doesn’t stick to kids. Promethium is MADE to stick to kids.
>Promethium burn instantly when in contact with air.
>flamer weapon had a small jet of igniter on the bottom, under the barrel
GW damnit, make up your mind😂
Just learned of this from majorkill and your contest. Checking out your vids. Long live the emperor.
So the Mechanicus taking one out of the Ork play book? Or Tim Howard? " it just works"
Thanks for the content man your one of my favorite channels. Thank you for all of your hard work, I hope good things come your way because you seem like the type that has good karma my brother. Take care and keep us entertained my friend.
Cool video. My take on melta tech is that it works like the yamato cannon in starcraft. Its like a directional nuclear charge.
Love the videos you do my friend, would love a lore video on the Minotaurs 👀
Liked the collaboration with majorkill
Melta just sounds cool. Like it has street cred in the 41st millennium.
Grav cannon;a
Major kill;you can make a enemy balls have 3 tons
Space marine 2 brought me back to you Wes😍
11:25 It wouldn't be a railgun (which propels a metal slug)
Weapons like these are called simply "Blasters", "Plasma Blasters", or "Plasma Accelerators". Some games like Fallout just call them Plasma Pistols. (or rifles)
I been following you for a min now an I have learned so much just watchin your videos keep it flowing brother!!
Outstanding video brother!
first artwork shown has a flaw i cant unsee now, the rounds are being fed in backwards 💀💀
Anyone else noticed that the round of the heavy Bolter are fed wrong way in in the first picture.
Hmmm... I may have misinterpreted certain elements of what was provided or what I saw. So, just be aware when going through.
100 caliber is 25mm for anyone wondering. And yes Boltor barrels are to big. Probably 30-35mm
Heavy bolter, assault cannon and volkite baby!
The video starts at 3:33
For reference 100 caliber or .100 caliber is roughly the size of a 20 mm shell
