I cannot imagine how someone can missunderstand this card's text tbh. It is SO clear but I've seen so many players confused about when the beginning phase occurs.
Ulamog doesn't only count your opponent's cards so you can exile your own high mana value things. The notable thing is being a replacement effect "enters with" if ulamog enters from exile (ei from creativity) it will see itself and get 10 +1/+1 counters
Also notably, Ugin's Labyrinth imprints a high mv card, so if you cast this with something imprinted under Ugin's Labyrinth, at worst you get 7 counters

Shadow of the Second Sun gives you an additional beginning phase *after* your postcombat main phase, not before it. That extra phase happens between your second main phase and your end step, meaning that it basically happens at the same time as Wilderness Rec.

That is unfortunate, I wish it did allow sorcery speed. However, "cast time warp" every turn is definitely a very crazy effect so I am tentatively optimistic
I believe you missed a couple of things about Ulamog. The +1+1 counters clause not only doesn’t specify that the card has to be exiled with the cast trigger, but it also doesn’t have to be an opponent’s card, so it includes cards you’ve exiled yourself (even with Ugins labyrinth). On top of just making the card better in general I think it makes it much more viable as a reanimation/creativity target, though likely still not as generally good as archon or OG emrakul.
If there's one thing to take away from this video, it is that Mishra's Bauble will *probably* be going the way of Gitaxian Probe and Arcum's Astrolabe in the not so distant future as yet another card that, while it's not *broken*, just enables too many things for basically no opportunity cost. It commits crimes, is an artifact in play for affinity decks, triggers DRC, puts an artifact in the graveyard for goyf/delirium-style effects, triggers revolt and descend, enables easy turn two connives with Ledger Shredder, can be a pseudo-scry effect with fetchlands, and I'm sure there's even more I'm forgetting about. And it does this all for the low, low cost of absolutely free.
idk though it's kind of the bedrock of many archetypes in the format, would be a little surprised if they banned it. would be like banning fetches (although a lot less impactful)

She was an ambassador for the kitsune in Konda's court (the main villain who caused the mortal-kami war) and she ended up taking the position of tutor and surrogate mother for princess Michiko (one of the main heroes alongside Toshiro). Light-Paws is a current timeline kitsune who's serving as regent for the Emperor.
There is also several 1 mana equipments that work with Basking Broodscale. I think where it could carve out it's own deck is an urza saga combo deck. Ancient stirring being able to find broodscale, the equipment or urza's saga seems like an intresting start.
I like this. I found Blade of the Bloodchief and Tarrian's Soulcleaver that work with the Broodscale, don't know if there is any other equipment that fits the criteria.
This was a great vid Spike, maybe better then even u think. its not just the spoilers (which we can look up our self) nor is it only the reaction (you are entertaining) its the though process of evaluating the cards that makes me sit thru it. play rakdos myself so i often overlook cards not fitting into my rakdos modern deck (Green, blue and white) so this is giving me ideas as to how to get my deck ready against other players come MH3. torpor orb (so much etb to come + humans are getting a comeback) and Damping Sphere everyone is cheating in big cards, usually thru tron, titan and now eldrazi lands.
I think something skipped by Kozilek is that you may target up to two players, but if you do they HAVE to manifest the cards. So if it resolves it can pseudo mind rot them or make them manifest other cards in order to keep an answer. And because it is on cast, they can't use removal before choosing the two cards.
I agree, I think most reviewers undervalue Kozilek, I haven't seen anybody talk about the on cast mind rot and uncounterable draw 4, yes you and your opponent both need to have cards in hand to get the full 4 draw, but if your opponent doesnt have cards in hand, a 9/9 that potentially brings 2 5/4s will win you the game pretty quickly. So in most cases you either always draw at least 2 or get a threat that your opponent wont be able to answer unless they topdeck or already have a board that can do it. Also 9 mana is a huge difference compared to 10, speaking in Tron terms, you need a 2nd Tower to unlock 10 mana at turn 4, whereas 9 mana can be unlocked by any tron piece or the new Ugin land.
As a hammer player I was hoping for another good equipper but there are some cool new toys and I LOVE that this format in general instead of completely overwhelming the format is creating a bunch of powerful but niche cards that’s likely to make for a healthy/diverse modern format where many archetypes are viable
Ulamog combos with goryos, the cast trigger is just flavor text. It counts any card in exile including leyline binding and evoke elementals. You can just annihilator very quickly after a grief or so.
I think shadow of the second sun is going to be the sleeper hit of the set. It solves so many issues wilderness reclamation suffers from, and it also gives some old favorites and lower power decks a huge boost. Turbo fog for example LOVES this card. It doubles howling mine triggers, your deck naturally gets to 6 mana just vis the nature of what you're doing, and when it resolves tbe game ends. I think it also enables interesting new decks such as high noon control, starfield of nyx, and more,and helps revive old strategies like nexus of fate. i think that the t xr in it is easy to undervalue. Untapping artifacts, retriggering upkeep triggers and double dipping on sagas is nutty. We have a way to untap and accelerate urzas saga now, and we all know how crazy that card is. I really think the card is worth every mana and am excited to try and break it in the format.
19:20 - The interesting thing about Ulamog is that it counts all cards in exile (Not just your opponent's). So one could consider running it along Serum Powder, Impulse Effects, Gemstone Caverns, or even in a Goryo's Vengeance deck (Since it could get powered up by pitching something to Grief early on). What's more, it ends up being the first Legendary Eldrazi with Annihilator that can be reanimated as Sorcery speed (Since all the other ones shuffle themselves back into the deck). Out of the 3 titans, it's the most interesting by far.
Red flare is fantastic, it can copy opponents spells making it a free counterspell in red and one of the few free spells that can be played both proactively and reactively
Forgetting top of library stuff for a second, Brainsurge is just the best condition-free draw spell we've seen since Ancestral Recall. If Draw-Go were to be made playable again, Brainsurge would undoubtedly be a big part of it. At the very minimum, we're not going to see Wafo-Tapa sleeve up Think Twice again.
I think the biggest thing you missed was that Kozilek rips interaction out of your opponent's hand uninteractably, and draws you 4 and makes 2 2/2s which is better than any other titan's cast trigger (assuming the titan gets countered/interacted with). It seems pretty good for any interactive matchup. Ulamog is interesting because it sees itself enterring from exile off of Creativity(same ruling as Golgari-Grave Troll seeing itself in graveyard, replacement effects modify how they enter so it has to check before they enter), meaning that if you creativity into Ulamog you get a 17/17 Annihilator 10 without any other exile manipulation which I think is pretty sick. It has essentially Ward - Sac 2 lands as well, and it basically has the text "win the game on attacks". Not sure how much better this is than Archon but I think it's gonna be where people play ulamog most often
22/05/2024: Six is the card that breaks modern this time round. Discards land, exiles black card, casts grief, because we love to grief in modern. But i think it'll be worse than that. Also Janky Vengevine, play Six, discard land play walking ballista, return vengevines and or play Hollow ones.
I'm surprised nobody has talked about how Flare of Duplication is a red force counterspell against opposing counterspells. You copy their counter and redirect it to their spell. Not as versatile as a Force of your own because it'll only ever counter an opposing counterspell, but still pretty huge.
Oddly enough Shadow of the Second Sun goes really well with that weird old goat, Zedruu the Greathearted. Shadow doubles up Zedruu's lifegain/card draw trigger, and you can donate Shadow to another player and still have it target you. It works very similarly to Paradox Haze. This is more a Commander thing though.
I think Sorin's most natural shell is Martyr- it + martyr of sands is pretty easily a 12 damage combo and doesn't require you to build around it in the same way you build around Shoal.
Basking broodscale has an unorthodox combo with tarrians soul cleaver + altar of the brood, both pieces fetchable with urzas saga and harder to remove than Rosie, all while being cheaper on mana and colorless.
One noteworthy combo with the new Ulamog is it sees itself in exile with Indomitable Creativity, Creativity+Bitter Reunion puts a 17/17 annihilator 10 into play with haste. Not sure if that's better than the current options but worth noting.
The flare of duplication with the 4 mana red elemental creature looks like mono red storm could be coming to modern doubt it's any good but you can get magus of the moon and pivot into arclight or maybe even burn mind games sounds very fun
RE: Kozilek, I think 9 mana is much cheaper than 10 in Tron, which makes it pretty castable on turn 4. Tron can only make 10 mana on turn 4 if a second urza's tower is your fourth land, but to make 9 mana, your forth land can be any tron piece OR Ugin's Labyrinth OR Eldrazi Temple.
Not that it changes the playability of the card, I feel like its worth talking about Kozilek's Unsealing with the pitch elementals. I dont see it being really good, but ppl will definitely sleeve it up
Idk why everyone hates on wheel of potential. It does a few different things from wheel of fortune. Number one it exiles which is bad for storming off, but good for burn. You don't want to give cards to your opponents just to let them play out of grave. I think it's also a wonderful 3 mana draw three on it's own and you can assume playing a more turn and burn style list you want to discard the shaft in hand for those three new cards. Another factor is this might net you advantage when the opponent is playing with a fuller hand of 4+ cards. Yes you gave them 3 cards, but exiling a wincon or one ring before it's casted seems good. Idk I'm looking at it from a cedh prospective and its a fixed wheel.
Mogg Mob seems spicy with Cauldron and Krenko from MKM. Go wide, use Krenko's ability to get counters on all the goblins, use mogg mob's ability to hit your opponent over and over
Holy shit, I love this cycle of energy cards. Like finally theres a budget version of Gilded Drake for CEDH, I dont know if ima try it in modern but it is sooo nice for other formats! And the other ones r fun af!
I know ther might be better options, but Kozilek best case scenario is a 9 mana opponent "discards" 2 cards, you draw 4 cards and you get a 9/9 and two 5/4s. That must be worth something.
The elf cards in this set make it feel like WotC wants to push modern elves towards craterhoof. Stuff like Coco, lead the stampede, and any lord that isn't archdruid just plain aren't emphasized. As an elf player, this doesn't sound like a buff, it sounds like elf is stronger when playing into simple counters like board wipe.
I think Ulamog could be good in Goryo's decks because the deck often exiles things to cast to evoke elementals or exiles with solitude. If you use the new free spell Eldrazi or the Ugin Labiring to exile a big mana value card greater than 13 in the second turn, we could potentially attack with a 20/20 liquidator 13 ward.
Kozilek forcing out 2 cards from an opponent (potentially removals) and drawing up to 4 cards seems not that bad. Also, the passive effect could just push some nasty damages. Did you maybe under estimate the manifest on opponent? Or is it just not good enough of an effect
Shadow of the Second Sun doesn't let you cast sorcery speed abilities, right? You get a second beginning phase (that you can't cast sorceries during), but it's inserted after post combat main and before ending phase.
I think its definitely better than you first think. By the time you cast this, its likely going to be the last few cards of your hand, but also your opponents. Even if your opponent counters it, they are likely down 2 cards in hand, and you are up 2-4. The tempo swing is the power, not the actual 19 POWER it can provide.
It's there so you can't exchange and then get it back/ remove it for free. It forces you to use a spell on it. Imagine if you could take an opponent's thing and then Time Raveler it back to your hand so you could steal something the next turn. Instead, you'd have to play an Unsummon in your deck to be able to get that value, and spending a card on that effect isn't worth it.
i know that's a bit early to ask this question considering that the full set hasn't been spoiled yet, but do you think that we could see even more leyline deck considering how easly it allows to use each flare?
Talk about Battle Hymn brings back memories of the worst draft format ever printed. The fact that they printed that at common in Avacyn Restored was absolutely wild. The fact that about 40% of the commons did nothing meant that every single draft you were at risk of not having enough playables.
Battle Hymn, Grounded, Outwit, and Cursebreak made for a loose cycle of common cards that did literally nothing in limited. There were about two more cycles of cards that did next-to-nothing. Seriously, check out the list of commons from that set if you want a laugh.
Do you or does anyone believe that this set isn't more targeted towards Commander?? While I see Spike's point that this set seems to be built to force newer decks into the format I still think what they put out in the early meetings for this set was something loosely like this. "This new Modern Horizons set needs to be full of good reprints that aren't currently in a retro frame and reprints for Commander players (see guest cards). We also want the Eldrazi in this set to stir up some nostalgia and get the Tron players all excited. Lastly the majority of these rares and mythic need to be desirable for the Commander crowd." 🤷♀

This is correct. The templating just throws people off with "at the beginning of your postcombat main phase" as the trigger. Sphinx of the Second Sun from Commander Legends works the same way, and had lots of people confused for the same reasons. Now it's the non-commander players' turn to be confused. The reminder text is meant to help, but clearly from the reactions I've seen today, it hasn't.
Doesn't Mogg Mob actually not work with soul cauldron? Wouldn't all the creatures gain the activated ability, " Sacrifice Mogg Mob: etc" so they couldn't sacrifice themselves to that ability?
Were getting closer and closer to the point where bauble shouldnt remain a legal card in modern Its like playing a 36 card deck except that it triggers things for free and enables things like unholy heat and DRC. Its stock at this point. You play DRC or shredder, you play 4 bauble. You're playing 4 bauble, you might as well play 4 unholy heats, etc. Etc.
Feel like the tl;dr with most cards is they are immediately ez because mishra's bauble *exists. I'm not a big ban train guy but seems like one that lowers all power levels across the board from free "do the thing".
I could see myself playing white medallion on FNM, its 5-8 copy of oketras monument, or just better version of it(3 mana for monument is alot in 2024).

The aura templating for Shadow of the 2nd sun make it drop when you play the 1 ring from the protection.

22/05/2024: Six is the card that breaks modern this time round. Discards land, exiles black card, casts grief, because we love to grief in modern. But i think it'll be worse than that. Also Janky Vengevine, play Six, discard land play walking ballista, return vengevines and or play Hollow ones.
They missed opportunity on "Suffer as I have suffered, lose as I have losered."
Flare of Fortitude feels like a combo card rather than just a sideboard card.
I'm surprised nobody has talked about how Flare of Duplication is a red force counterspell against opposing counterspells. You copy their counter and redirect it to their spell.
Not as versatile as a Force of your own because it'll only ever counter an opposing counterspell, but still pretty huge.
Oddly enough Shadow of the Second Sun goes really well with that weird old goat, Zedruu the Greathearted. Shadow doubles up Zedruu's lifegain/card draw trigger, and you can donate Shadow to another player and still have it target you. It works very similarly to Paradox Haze. This is more a Commander thing though.
New Sorin looks like a great combo piece / win con for Neobrand
I pray that White Orchid Phantom revives the Boros Boom//Bust archetype. I miss that deck so much
Btw, you can tell when a rare or mythic is a reprint because they will have a watermark from their original set, just as we see in Deserted Temple

Spike, Basking Broodscale comboes also with Blade of the Bloodchief, which is much more interesting than Rosie Cotton I believe...
I think Sorin's most natural shell is Martyr- it + martyr of sands is pretty easily a 12 damage combo and doesn't require you to build around it in the same way you build around Shoal.
Basking broodscale has an unorthodox combo with tarrians soul cleaver + altar of the brood, both pieces fetchable with urzas saga and harder to remove than Rosie, all while being cheaper on mana and colorless.
One noteworthy combo with the new Ulamog is it sees itself in exile with Indomitable Creativity, Creativity+Bitter Reunion puts a 17/17 annihilator 10 into play with haste. Not sure if that's better than the current options but worth noting.
The flare of duplication with the 4 mana red elemental creature looks like mono red storm could be coming to modern doubt it's any good but you can get magus of the moon and pivot into arclight or maybe even burn mind games sounds very fun
RE: Kozilek, I think 9 mana is much cheaper than 10 in Tron, which makes it pretty castable on turn 4. Tron can only make 10 mana on turn 4 if a second urza's tower is your fourth land, but to make 9 mana, your forth land can be any tron piece OR Ugin's Labyrinth OR Eldrazi Temple.

Not that it changes the playability of the card, I feel like its worth talking about Kozilek's Unsealing with the pitch elementals. I dont see it being really good, but ppl will definitely sleeve it up
OOo monored storm is something that I am really excited for, esp with the flare, I dont think itll be amazing but its gonna be fun.
Also, Kaalia is gonna be such a fun dumb deck.

Idk why everyone hates on wheel of potential. It does a few different things from wheel of fortune. Number one it exiles which is bad for storming off, but good for burn. You don't want to give cards to your opponents just to let them play out of grave. I think it's also a wonderful 3 mana draw three on it's own and you can assume playing a more turn and burn style list you want to discard the shaft in hand for those three new cards. Another factor is this might net you advantage when the opponent is playing with a fuller hand of 4+ cards. Yes you gave them 3 cards, but exiling a wincon or one ring before it's casted seems good. Idk I'm looking at it from a cedh prospective and its a fixed wheel.
I do believe Detective's Phineox will be really sweet with Lorien Revealed.
Mogg Mob seems spicy with Cauldron and Krenko from MKM. Go wide, use Krenko's ability to get counters on all the goblins, use mogg mob's ability to hit your opponent over and over

Tamiyo might be insane in some sort of 8 cast deck as a source of card advantage that's also just makes keeps putting more material on the board.
I know ther might be better options, but Kozilek best case scenario is a 9 mana opponent "discards" 2 cards, you draw 4 cards and you get a 9/9 and two 5/4s. That must be worth something.
The elf cards in this set make it feel like WotC wants to push modern elves towards craterhoof. Stuff like Coco, lead the stampede, and any lord that isn't archdruid just plain aren't emphasized. As an elf player, this doesn't sound like a buff, it sounds like elf is stronger when playing into simple counters like board wipe.

Ral could be used in the meme coin flip decks. Transforming him is a may condition so you can keep him around just to flip more coins.
Id love for Kozilek to be playable as a SB card against control haha but probably not good enough outside of that

I feel like Six is hard to evaluate, but it could be what everyone wanted Kaervek to be.
I think Ulamog could be good in Goryo's decks because the deck often exiles things to cast to evoke elementals or exiles with solitude.
If you use the new free spell Eldrazi or the Ugin Labiring to exile a big mana value card greater than 13 in the second turn, we could potentially attack with a 20/20 liquidator 13 ward.
I’m going to thoroughly enjoy Sorin in my mardu deck with the new Boros Elder giant. And or Sultai with Uro.
Kozilek forcing out 2 cards from an opponent (potentially removals) and drawing up to 4 cards seems not that bad. Also, the passive effect could just push some nasty damages.
Did you maybe under estimate the manifest on opponent? Or is it just not good enough of an effect
Shadow of the Second Sun doesn't let you cast sorcery speed abilities, right? You get a second beginning phase (that you can't cast sorceries during), but it's inserted after post combat main and before ending phase.

I think its definitely better than you first think. By the time you cast this, its likely going to be the last few cards of your hand, but also your opponents. Even if your opponent counters it, they are likely down 2 cards in hand, and you are up 2-4. The tempo swing is the power, not the actual 19 POWER it can provide.

I think volatile stormdrake’s protection is there so it can’t steal itself.
It's there so you can't exchange and then get it back/ remove it for free. It forces you to use a spell on it.
Imagine if you could take an opponent's thing and then Time Raveler it back to your hand so you could steal something the next turn. Instead, you'd have to play an Unsummon in your deck to be able to get that value, and spending a card on that effect isn't worth it.

Talk about Battle Hymn brings back memories of the worst draft format ever printed. The fact that they printed that at common in Avacyn Restored was absolutely wild. The fact that about 40% of the commons did nothing meant that every single draft you were at risk of not having enough playables.
Battle Hymn, Grounded, Outwit, and Cursebreak made for a loose cycle of common cards that did literally nothing in limited. There were about two more cycles of cards that did next-to-nothing. Seriously, check out the list of commons from that set if you want a laugh.

Do you or does anyone believe that this set isn't more targeted towards Commander?? While I see Spike's point that this set seems to be built to force newer decks into the format I still think what they put out in the early meetings for this set was something loosely like this. "This new Modern Horizons set needs to be full of good reprints that aren't currently in a retro frame and reprints for Commander players (see guest cards). We also want the Eldrazi in this set to stir up some nostalgia and get the Tron players all excited. Lastly the majority of these rares and mythic need to be desirable for the Commander crowd." 🤷♀
Commander is the biggest format, forget modern.

Not to mention politicking to get someone else to do something you can't or don't want to do, no thanks. Commander was growing very well prior to WOTC shifting focus to make every set have a lot of cards Commander players would want.

This is correct. The templating just throws people off with "at the beginning of your postcombat main phase" as the trigger. Sphinx of the Second Sun from Commander Legends works the same way, and had lots of people confused for the same reasons. Now it's the non-commander players' turn to be confused. The reminder text is meant to help, but clearly from the reactions I've seen today, it hasn't.

Its stock at this point. You play DRC or shredder, you play 4 bauble. You're playing 4 bauble, you might as well play 4 unholy heats, etc. Etc.

I could see myself playing white medallion on FNM, its 5-8 copy of oketras monument, or just better version of it(3 mana for monument is alot in 2024).
