It was Robert's unreasoning hatred for the Targaryen children that let Ned know that he could never fully trust Robert again. He loved Robert like a brother; but knew that brother wouldn't hesitate to kill Ned's nephew, Jon.
Also? Robert made lifelong enemies of the Martells, for doing nothing about the murder of Elia Martell. The only reason she was killed was because Tywin and Cersei were bitter that Rhaegar wed Elia, instead of Cersei. At the very least, Clegane should have been punished for that crime.

She was definitely not killed solely because Tywin & Cersei were bitter over the marriage of Rhaegar & Elia. She & the children were killed because they didn't want anyone with a possible claim to the throne to be around to cause trouble. That's also why assassins were looking to kill Viserys & Danearys.

It is said that it took Jon Arryn all his diplomatic skill and wit to keep the Dornish from invading that instant when news broke about deaths of Elia's and her children. And not just house Martells, the entire nation of Dorne was up in arms as Elia was beloved by the people.

@@carastone3473Hahahaha yeh you are 1000% right. They wanted no challenge to the throne. but in truth, Tywin did feel slighted that the Martels was chosen. In the books cersi also never let that go. She had a memory of it. Saying when she got rejected and cried all day and night, Tywin said he will find her a better husband than rhaegar. She said Tywin failed at that. Kevan Lannister was butt hurt to. In the ending of the book a dance with dragons Kevan was thinking about the tourney at harren hall after cersi’s walk of atonement. Remembering how beautiful cersi used to be but now she is aging. And how she was fun loving. Talking about if rhaegar had gotten to know cersi he wouldn’t even have looked at the wolf girl. That’s what he called her😂. Also said lyana stark is cute in a plain way but cersi next level beautiful. It’s like rhaegar and his actions traumatized the Lannister family😂😂😂. Both he and his dad’s actions. Like how can they not want her/them😂.

And we all know how opportunist reach is for power. And how much they like to be on the winning side.

@ishanparbhakar7150 except with Book Casterly Rock they never would be able to take it. It's literally built into the moustain itself not on top of it. Too many choke points that make large numbers pointless. And as long g as the Lannisters beat back Robert's fleet there isn't much he could actually do to starve them out. Sure he could attack Lannisport but the. He leaves his back to Tywin and that's not smart.

I mean he had the whole North, the Vale most of the StormLands (he is from there as a baratheon) and by now almost the whole RiverLands as Ned married Cat. If he went for punishment he would probably have the Martels as well. Even Tyrells + Lannisters couldnt resist all the others.

This is why I don't understand how anyone could like Robert. He was totally fine with his literal baby cousins being murdered simply they bore the last name Targaryen. Had his grandmother been a grandfather instead, he would also bear the last name Targaryen. He's a hypocrite. He's abusive to his wife (just because she's Cersei doesn't excuse his behavior). He's neglectful of the children that bear his last name. And he has enough bastards to start their own village...
