It sucks that they start disintegrating so bad. I had a 99 Zx2 S/R and a 2000 SVT Contour and the rust ate them both alive. They were fun cars forsure, although not very quick esp by todays standards. But for 20 years ago they were good.

  • @sophisticated

It's a tuned version of the 2.5 liter duratec v6 of the Contour v6. It received a lot of praise and amazing reviews when it came out. They also made the SVT Focus. The SVT Contour and SVT Focus were both the american version of the MONDEO ST200 and Focus ST170. Which are the same cars but with different bumpers and trims. Both of those were developed in Europe. The Fusion replaced the Contour. The Contour did not replace the Fiesta. The Contour is the Mondeo in Europe which is a mid-size sedan.

    • @arcanewyrm6295
      @arcanewyrm6295 6 лет назад +3

Sebiii, it shares the same platform, CDW27, as the Mondeo. The front looks extraordinarily similar, but there are subtle differences which make front end cosmetic parts not quite interchangeable between a Mondeo and a Contour without some modifications. But you are spot on with your comparison of the two models.

    One: for a 90s 4 door it's seriously fun
Two: your mechanic and wallet will hate you

And the transmission in these is a little weak so don't thrash it

Today, all cars come factory with some kind of front/rear spoiler, rims and skirts to an extent. For It's time thou, (98-2000 I think) the SVT was one of the few cars that you didn't need to add any external kits on. It just needed lowering.

I have owned 2 of these, at the time they came out BF goodrich made a SPECIAL tire just for the SVT contour, and it held the title as 3rd most power per liter, car in the world (behind hondas f20 and porsches boxtser. Amazing canyon carving roads.. I have chased quiet a few ST foci' down back roads and cars in MUCH better class,, But hands down one of the coolest, best performace based sleepers per dollar u can buy.. Just change the Diff when u buy it, they break on stock power.
Dare we talk about how fucking rare it was in the 90's for ford to make a car STICK SHIFT ONLY...ALL svt contours are stick.. and thank god they are #save the manuals
Check my channel I have plenty of pics/vids. including my engine all taken out of My personal SVT contour.
The rare factor, and V6 sound through factory stainless exhaust is just epic, VERY few cars of this era handled this well or were this quick, these SVT Contours will do 145mph, out of the box... ask me how I know.

Contour/Mystique/Mondeo were Ford’s “World Car,” which began in ‘92 in Europe with the Mondeo, still in production to this day. Ford introduced the ‘95 Contour/Mystique, in the USA, in April, ‘94 with much fanfare, though it is said to have been taking up the market void left vacant by the discontinued Tempo/Topaz.
Contour/Mystique we’re equipped with the 2.0L Z-Tech, and 2.5L Duratec engines. SVT Performance adaptations began in the ‘98 model year and in Europe with the ST200. The shift knob you were referring to was from a ST200, which must have been an imported souvenir, added on later. SVT models had enhanced intake, and performance upgrades, as you had mentioned, for the knowledgeable car enthusiast to appreciate. Although discontinued after the 2000 model year, the Contour/Mystique was not replaced. In Europe/Asia/South American Mondeo (mk3, and onward) were based on the Mazda6 platform, and eventually, when the Ford Fusion was introduced in ‘06 model year, design cues across platforms with the Mondeo were evident.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this car. I own a 1999 SE Contour, has a 2.5 with 140k, it's not an svt, but has the sunroof and a different version of ground effects.it also has factory aluminum trims. The car is super fun to drive with the factory automatic transmission. But after owning it for several years, I have to be honest, it's a money pit. After numerous alternator replacements, which are a nightmare. And rusty rockers from michigan winters. It's getting old real fast.

  • @damson_jmonay42069

interestingly enough, the parents of one of my good friends growing up had a V6 automatic Mercury Mystique, which was the regular 170 hp Duratec 2.5 rather than the svt 195 hp. They also had a manual Cougar of the era, as well as a Villager. Cool combination of cars, though I'm not sure if I ever rode in the cougar. They got over 200k miles out of the mystique until they had to retire it. I had never looked into the difference between the regular 2.5 and the svt 2.5. For some reason, I always thought the SVT came with a hotter 4 cylinder? Now thanks to your video, I have a mild desire to try and build an SVT mystique, sorta. I just think the different grille shape of the mercury look better than the oval Ford grille. That, plus the fact that I have a soft spot for older duratec v6s since my first car was a '99 Sable wagon with the duratec 3.0. Great engine, while everything else around it fell apart with age and rust. Lol

Nitpicks mcgee over here. Should mention how horribly unreliable this car can be though. I have one that has a taurus swapped in it, while being pretty damn fast even compared to a lot of modern sedans and has better handling, a lot of things can go wrong with this car and often. Still more reliable than an m3 of the same year I would wager. Should mention the handling of this car in the review more, it's really the main selling point. fwd cars usually aren't that great in the cornering department but this one was in my experience. Has a great power to weight ratio, only weighing 2900-3000 lbs and having 200 bhp stock.

Upgrading the wheels and lowering the car can be a rather subjective change although handling does improve (gets rid of a lot of body roll). The better reason to upgrade the wheels to at least 17" minimum is the number of tires available and the pricing is much cheaper while still getting great performance. The tire options for the 16" factory rims is quite limited these days and pricey.

2.5 isn't part of the SVT package, it's the V6 that half the population of Contours had, SVT merely improved upon the existing 2.5 V6. Nor is it a small car, a midsize car weighing in at 3200 lbs. All V6 Contours are fun, it's just the SVT is funner faster. 2000's safety restrictions had nothing to do with the steering wheel bud, the Contour's been like that since 95. You say "plasticy material" while thumping the expensive leather? OK. Every car had cruise control by the mid 90's bud. And again half the Contours had the V6, it's not an SVT-only thing. You need to improve your googling skills.

Yes the svt contour ain't pretty but just remember the pre facelift contours and all of a sudden this one looks like a Ferrari in comparison

Pre-98 contours look better than regular trim post-98s. Go google a Pre-98 SVT conversion and weep at the dopeness

Phillguy sho of this gen had no manual trans & the contour is a much sportier & funner car which cost almost as much as an sho of the same year..

Sigh... or what you would do is go back the the 95 model year, get a used SHO, get a better car and not have a POOR MAN's SHO.

Phillguy 95 Taurus SHO not a better car than the 2000 Contour SVT lol!

      HHAHAHAHAHA. Yes it is.

@@Phillguy No it isn't. It is faster but rusts insanely and is pretty fucking unreliable. Faster isn't better, thats for sure. The Contour was a better car all around and the performance model took that up a notch. The SHO was cool but sorry about your wrong opinion in the face of facts ;)
