Ive done the Appalachian trail. You NEED to stop in hotels or towns in order to clean clothes, get food wash up, etc. It takes 6 months so its necessary.
As an Appalachian trail thru hiker this is my favorite movie of all time absolutely loved it these guys wouldn't understand lol and btw staying at hotels and hostels in not cheating it's the reward your looking forward to and your motivation sometimes.
Damn, I wish this movie was better. I really love the book, I love Bill Bryson... but I can see why it would be hard to adapt it to a good movie 'cause there's just not much going on story-wise.
+Grace Kim Yes, Grace. I agree completely. There's a lot of historical discussion: trees, conservationists, civil war vignettes, tragedies along the trail, but don't you think they should have included every exchange with Mary Ellen? They were all so funny. They left out half . . . . like what they really said when she asked them their signs. And how she stole their last cupcake. Must read more Bryson now.
+Alexander Forbes I saw it last night. I'm female and how this woman can claim misogyny is ridiculous. I'm getting so sick of all the whiny members of my own gender. By the way, there are no prominent female characters in the book. It's about one man's journey (Katz doesn't feature as heavily as presented in the film) to hike the Appalachian trail). The bit with the two guy's going on about Redford seeming dorky and having messy hair is equally stupid. He's trying to play a real life character, dumb asses. There must be no requirements to getting a job as a movie critic.
I don't know that this movie, like the book, is supposed to be about anything other than Bill and Kats's hike through the woods. It's what many of Bill Bryson books are honestly. If you ever read his book about going through America, or London, or Australia you will know that this movie likely won't be about a character going through an emotional story arc or learning something new about himself, it's just a movie about physical journey with humorous stuff happening along the way.
It would have been interesting to hear what they thought of the film compared to the book but none of them had read it. I have and there isn't enough in the book for a full movie. Over half of it is talk of trail history and botany. The other crime was to edit out more than half of the funny things they said to Mary Ellen and the funny things she said back. She wasn't the brightest star in the sky. And since she really did exist it is irrelevant what the film's attitude was towards her (as a female). She was a buffoon in real life and you can show that in film. It's OK.
Some reviews need to be researched before they are spoken. The author, Bryson, was born in 1951 but the book on which the movie was based was published in 1998 so the author must have been in his mid-40's when he had these experiences. Perhaps the original text failed to translate well into a screenplay in the Hollywood, "bucket list" genre. Bryson is a humorist although he writes about travel and history. In a style like S.J. Perelman's, he ridicules those he meets and what he sees. Perhaps the leads were too old for these roles and neither is well associated with careers requiring the frequent and successful use of comic timing or delivery.
+DAZEDESUFNOC Movie Talk Well at least she is a professional film critic ... I think that is a little less washed up than having 48 subscribers to one's 'movie talk' channel.... Do some self reflection once in a while before bashing someone else. She's a person too, and doesn't deserve to be called a 'fool and washed up'. Learn some empathy and kindness.
KingOfTheCreeps You can like that but I don't. I like his opinion some of the times (I always hate when I agree with him) but I hate his shout-you-down and interrupting style. It's annoying. You can tell Ben hates it too. Watch some of the older reviews (last year) and see how he interrupts Ben and Ben would get visibly upset.
The oldest person to complete the Appalachian Trail was 81. Maybe Ben should do some research before flapping his lips. It makes you wonder how the knob end in the middle got his job, with no charm, wit or even anything original to say. Even the two bookends showed no interest in his fatuous comments. I'd give the review 2/10.
Feel a tad bit sorry for the panel, Alonso is in Venice watching Black Mass, Beasts Of No Nation, Everest etc and they are stuck reviewing the transporter refueling and "an almost was" movie. Better luck next time.
maybe everything is misogynistic, after all dealing with an inferior gender over and over again through the ages, its only natural to express some form on contempt once in a while.
+Bogdan Mendryshora That simply isn't true Bogdan. And what's the problem anyway? Misogyny still runs rampant even to this day, so it deserves plenty of attention.
The problem with At The Movies, with Vitaly and Christy, was that they adopted all the formal posturing of Gene and Roger. But when you're young, born in the 70s or 80s, it's no use pretending you grew up in the 50s. You can't talk like Gene and Roger talked. You gotta talk like a younger, brasher person, the real you, cursing and raising your voice and using your particular idiom. This is what makes What the Flick?! so good, is the shoot-from-the-hip format. Christy and the guys thrive here, now that no one is trying to mimic Roger or Gene.
Ben, you're the shit, don't let Matt talk down to you just because he's smarter! :p. Random side note, my favorite game of theones review / recaps are always done by Ben, Jon, Cenk, and Matt. No Ana or Brett Erlich, please. (yeah, I know that's going to be ignored but still).
+Gangrel Aussie Yeah - Brett Erlich ruins WTF reviews...lately he's been on some of their tv reviews, and it takes him forever to make a point, because he spends half the time setting up some lame comedy bit, and the rest of the time saying something completely obvious and lacking any depth. Ben, however, is awesome - more of him is always better!
Chris Wright I'm guessing you didn't realize that was a joke; i.e. I was poking fun at Ben, tongue in cheek? Also, how is that narcissistic? I'm not Matt, which is the only way that that comment could be taken to be narcissitic from my understanding.
Gangrel Aussie You were joking around yes, but you also revealed what you actually think. You say that Ben is smarter than Matt, and that's true, but he's also dumber. At a certain point being more cerebral and analytical ceases to pay dividends as you get more and more seperated from simple truths, honest answers, and appraisals that aren't primarily ego-driven. Ben is a smart guy, there's no question about that, but I sometimes feel like he's stuck in his own head because of that. He doesn't see his own biases, his own ego-driven agenda. Matt and Christy are more lucid and down to earth, and the things they say aren't so byzantine, they don't try to one-up each other. Ben's the type of guy who thinks he's just a little smarter than the rest, and that's exactly the reason why the opposite is in fact true.
Chris Wright When did I say I thought Ben was smarter than the others there? You're putting some words betwen the lines I typed that were never there, man. I think in places he's been right where they've been wrong, but vice versa as well. I personally think both Ben & Cenk are weirdly sexist in some areas while pathologically feminist in otheres (YMMV, naturally). If you're drawing that (the smart thing, sorry, longwinded here) from the order I listed my favorite GoT panel, there was no order, it was simple had the four people who have been on GoT recaps that I felt contributed the most. The only thing I really dislike is when they utterly dismiss arguments that criticize simply because they like a show (which mostly just happens when Cenk's on the GoT panel).
I very much enjoyed the movie and the book, and I plan on one day hiking the trail. I enjoyed Nolte in his role, though I would rather have seen Newman in it.
0:27 Omg...stupid stupid stupid. I gave it a fair watch and kept watching until the end. Had hope. So disappointing with, not only Redford's bad acting (Nolte was great), but the whole fucking plot...stupid. wanted to find something redeeming....not...just plain embarrassing...too many things...
I'd have sweared Matt was the eldest of the panel. Is Ben also older than Alonso? Damn, he looks the youngest after Christy. On the movie, it sounds like a lousier The Bucket List, which was already bad. meh. I also don't get Christy mad praise over Linklater. He's more of a hit or miss for me. The Before Trilogy was perfect, but the script for Boyhood, Slacker and Dazed and Confused are terrible. Just my opinion :D
+Kevin Alvarez A decent well meaning opinion?!?! NOT ON MY INTERNET! YOU SUUUUUUUUUUUUCK! YOUR OPINION SUUUUCKS! You... are a bad person? I don't know... I'm not... Ya, nevermind. I'm not a fan of Boyhood either. That movie is shit but it TOOK TWEEEELVE YEEEEEAAAARS!
Getting two boring old fools to play the part was a mistake. The book was ruined with this crappy superficial attempt at a comedy skit. Kristen Schaal was the only thing I liked and wanted more of her. Nolte plays the kind of guy I'd want to get away from the second he shows up. Just a boring drunk with years of wasted living. The beauty of Nature vs the worst of Humans. Several of Bryson's books are better like One Summer and At Home; the History of houses.
This panel has no clue about the reality of real people taking an extreme chance with nature because their opinions are limited by Hollywood's scripted formulas. The film is based upon Bill Bryson's memoir which according to Dixie of Homemade Wanderlust who has a vast personal history of walking America's wilderness trails is an accurate depiction of the life on the AT. Everyone who walks the trails has their own personal reasons for pitting themselves against the dangers of surviving the elements over months of walking thousands of miles. According to the expert, Dixie, who knows of which she speaks, the questions of age and one's BMI is also indicative of the panel's lack of research of the facts. People of all ages, sizes, ethnicities successfully walk the trails. I would give this review two thumbs down.
Ive done the Appalachian trail. You NEED to stop in hotels or towns in order to clean clothes, get food wash up, etc. It takes 6 months so its necessary.
Frank West Did you thru hike it? Or split it up?
Thru-hike. Started in March and finished September
Frank West Wow. Right on. That's pretty sweet.
+Grace Kim Yeah Bill Bryson is great, very much enjoyed "A short story of everything", its never dull. Not watched this movie (yet?).
In Wild she stayed in hotels along the way. Even hitch-hiked when the ground was frozen.
The idea reminds me of The Trip.
"Can we talk about misogyny for a second." The What the Flick catchphrase strikes again.
+Bradley Smith That's probably because a lot of these films are misogynist! *drops the mic*
Lmao!! @ "Despite the fact that we have the most accepting culture in human history." Good night delusional sir.
+AnArchaicSoul do you even know what misogyny means?
+Alexander Forbes I saw it last night. I'm female and how this woman can claim misogyny is ridiculous. I'm getting so sick of all the whiny members of my own gender. 10:45 The Lovable Misogynist trope really, really needs to die.

so how about that picture that melissa mccarthy posted on Instagram with just the women working on the movie. is that discrimination towards men?
How can you go wrong with Redford and Nolte? 2 great actor's....
Bryson's book "A Short History of Nearly Everything" is one of my desert island books. I'll see this.
But they ruined the book with this crap movie. Truly awful.
Some reviews need to be researched before they are spoken. I would bet that a movie made by women, for women, about women's issues, starring only women, would still be misogynistic according to Christy.
+DAZEDESUFNOC Movie Talk Well at least she is a professional film critic ... I think that is a little less washed up than having 48 subscribers to one's 'movie talk' channel....

+markalexander774 no she would say it's "empowering" woman don't think that they can be hateful towards men
Congrats on winning, Matt!
This book is based off a memoir btw
Please do a review of mr. robot season 1, it's between 90%-100% on all the reviews

I personally loved the movie and the book and nick nolite was hilarious in it
A video where Alonso doesn't interrupt everyone... Please have more of these guys...
+GREATGAIWAIN I like Alonso's interruptions.
KingOfTheCreeps You can like that but I don't. I like his opinion some of the times (I always hate when I agree with him) but I hate his shout-you-down and interrupting style. It's annoying. +GREATGAIWAIN Fair enough.
I rate Christy a 4 also but this movie is an 8 or 9

"I'm being sensitive..."
Yeah, Christy, do you see the problem here...?
Ben actually looks the youngest
+IZAM MATEY Ben's got grey in his beard, so I'm not buying that.
idk man he has a certain zest to him. Maybe its just me.
you are corect. his face/ skin etc... looks younger. Gray hairs show up in many beards durring ones twenties... dont mean anything
Feel a tad bit sorry for the panel, Alonso is in Venice watching Black Mass, Beasts Of No Nation, Everest etc and they are stuck reviewing the transporter refueling and "an almost was" movie. Better luck next time.
Man this chick literally thinks EVERYTHING is misogynistic. talk about liberal Young Turks
maybe everything is misogynistic, after all dealing with an inferior gender over and over again through the ages, its only natural to express some form on contempt once in a while.
Well the book is funny and entertaining.. Probably more than the movie. I'm reading it now then I'll see the movie and be disappointed.
can we talk about misogyny for a minute? Oh you mean the thing that you bring up every single time you review a movie.
+Bogdan Mendryshora that tells you more about the film industry than them
***** well i think youre wrong, and you think im wrong
DAZEDESUFNOC Movie Talk got it out of your system? ok good, bye bye.

The lack of knowledge they have about hiking and the appalacian trail is somewhat painful
It’s a shame that the critics didn’t understand anything about the AT, and why this movie is good in so many ways.
It's a movie. It's just a movie. Enjoy it.
Ben looks the most awesome.
+catquack give me a break, Christy's the bomb
How hard is it to get the basics right? The book was written end of 90s!
"can we talk about misogyny?" UGH GOD. *closes tab*
Didn't follow the book. They didn't see any bears and they went home after Katz got lost and they met back up. Why would anyone change a true story?
Ben, you're the shit, don't let Matt talk down to you just because he's smarter! :p. Random side note, my favorite game of theones review / recaps are always done by Ben, Jon, Cenk, and Matt. No Ana or Brett Erlich, please. (yeah, I know that's going to be ignored but still).

Nothing like a bit of tenting.
Excellent Ffilm. Should not be missed. Hilarious and moving..
Christy is coming off a bit oversensitive.

Ben is my favorite! Love and miss the old show! God bless! 🙏 ❤️
so...according to them, the way to fix this movie is for Redford to parrot lines he had in Butch Cassidy?
Wow, Ben is terrible at summarizing a movie.
made for TV movie, or should have been. To quote Nick Nolte "Ararrhhh Thpptt recka bwa ah dp"

Good review.
I liked this movie.
Omg this was so pointless and boring
Theres a lot of black people in this movie. Walking in the woods. Is what we love to do.
boohoo misogony
