Well thanks to "Between Dusk & Dawn", "the gala" & "A Royal Problem"? We now we know why Luna never attends the gala. She knows her sister all too well and doesn't want to get mixed up in it. Plus spending night after night helping ponies with nightmares must be exhausting. Especially depending on how bad said nightmare is and if she has to help more than one pony. Plus she has to maintain the safety of the kingdom alone both in the waking world and the dream world. Yeah I wouldn't want to be at a stuffy gala only for it to turn to absolute chaos if I had Luna's job either.
Luna in the beginning Luna: Are we really doing this? FanboySilver: Yep Luna: You can't be serious FanboySilver: I am Luna: Silver NO FanboySilver: Silver Yes
If you can make it to colorado USA, Silver Quill is one of our regular guests at running of the leaves convention. You could offer him a drink but he can be very busy though he did have some down time last con in between panels. Running of The Leaves should be in September. Check for updates on our facebook page @ facebook.com/RotLCon/?fref=ts Please check us out. We also are starting to host monthly meetings. So if you can make it, you could do just that.
Well I am 19 but my only mode of transportation is my car, it does have great mileage but it would probably cost me 1K for a trip to there and then to get back home
As a Persona fan, I really like the archetypes represented by the 22 Major Arcana of the tarot deck. In this case, especially considering Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep, Luna represents the Hierophant, an older character defined by an obsession with the past.
Dawn Forest But the Crone trope is like a wise old lady which I can relate to a good grandmother. Silver said she was forced to be wise beyond her years because of her banishment but I'd say she's more like an aunt who has the same motherly love for you but also is more open and willing to give advice because you aren't her direct descendant.
Huh... "The Crone", "The Mother" and "The Maiden"... why does that sound familia- O.O In the Discworld series it's mention that witches come in groups of three, "The Crone", "The Mother" and "The Maiden"... so... Luna is Granny Weatherwax and Celestia is Nanny Ogg...
I didn't know a lot about Archetypes until I saw the video from the panel. This one helps me understand the Crone archetype better. Well done Silver. =) And I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
0:45 Moonlight Sonata in the background--nice :) 3:31 Yeah, I know who the three Fates are. I love Greek mythology. 4:58 Because fans like to make characters into themselves, or what they wish they could be. This is, I think, the reason that some see Luna as old and wise (such as myself), and others see her as young and childish.
I love these character-centric after the fact videos. they're my favorite videos from you, with episode reviews (whether in quill or quilted form) coming as a close second.
That is pretty intersting. Albeit i do not think that luna torturing herself was necessarily undermining her. IT is a contradiction but many eople who do positive things may do something negative to themselves in the process. Fluttershy is well versed in that. However i have to wonder IF celestia could also be in part the crone as well. We do not know what she has endured but, as equestria may be a more positive place than our world by far, it is not without its strife. sometimes things go terribly wrong.
And I think it was a bit subconscious torture and she did not consciously design she neened to be tortured. The Tantabus was born in a dram after all and they are your subconscious.
^This.. she was not 'torturing' herself, the whole goal of her creating the Tantabus was not inflicting harm upon herself, it was to make sure she never allowed herself to forget what she did, to always remind her of the price for falling like that again.
That is a form of torture, though. It's psychologically damaging and it's a form of self-harm just as dangerous as the act of physically harming yourself.
Jess Miller No, the two are nothing even close to the same and trying to claim they are is one of the main cuases of people really over hating this episode. They are not identical. And the simple fact she WAS so perfectly able to interact, to do all she did, while still doing this, with absolutely zero impact on her outside of the dream that we can see... no this was not anything even close. Now yes it's not exactly the picture of perfect mental health, and was something she should not have been doing, but it is, in no conceivable way "Torture" she's giving herself some bad dreams... big deal. Further, it wasn't for the sake of hurting herself, her overall goal was to prevent herself from falling to Nightmare Moon's madness again. To prevent herself from making the same mistake, not to hurt herself just for the sake of hurting herself. It's more like somebody forcing themselves to look at a photo or video that reminds them of a very painful event where they fucked up bad, one that hurts to think about, but to make sure they never make that mistake again and forget the pain of having done so. Again yes not all together healthy and really should get some help, but nothing even close to what you are describing it as.
I do wonder what has happened to this Archetype changed after everything that happened during Royal Problems and how that episode changes what the moral of Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep really happens to actually be. Also Silver Quill you never did say, Does Royal Problems satisfy you wish for a Celestia and Luna-centric episode as you asked during Slice of Life.
Silver.. you... you peculiar awesome hippogryh, I was dropping few tears after you said that Luna is always by there side, that really touch me, but the tears stop when you started laughing cause you finally got Luna's dirty joke.. your laugh is contagious, you got me xD thanks for always giving smiles, laughs and happy tears
Oh, I loved how you did this. Seeing different views is always interesting to me. I do hope to see more of these Archetype in your view and learn as well.
Nice work with your second video to celebrate Luna and the Winter Solstice, Silver Quill!! Great job!! Also, like your second video to celebrate Celestia and the Summer Solstice earlier this year, I am glad you included scenes of Luna from Season 6 in it as well. However, I would've felt better if you had left out those scenes of Chrysalis from To Where and Back Again when she was clinging to Celestia and Luna's cocoons when referencing the witch part regarding the definition of a crone. Those scenes will haunt me for a while since it was basically Celestia being cocooned back in A Canterlot Wedding, but made ten times worse with Luna, Cadance, Shining Armor, and the Mane Six being stuck in cocoons as well.
It's nice to see you bring in the Maiden-Mother-Crone aspects Silver, referencing the Greek Fates was a nice touch. Though it would have been nice to hear a reference to it being spread throughout many ancient belief systems, but you did good sir. The crone is definitely one of the most misunderstood archetypes out there.
True story: I originally shifted gears to talk about Orlenna Tyrell when discussing the hag. I decided to hold off because that would muddy the focus on Luna.
MLP-Silver-Quill love your vids now I want to go watch season 6 again. You inspire me but I am to shy have any advice if if I want to start doing mlp vids? 😔 I am like fluttershy but fav pony is rainbow dash.
I know my advice bears alot less weight than Silver's. But speaking from personal experience, I recommend just doing it. Alot of the nerves I had when starting out were things that were fixed mostly by experience, and there really is no better teacher than that. But experience can only be gained by taking action, doing. And you can't ever get over whatever fears or insecurities you posses without facing them. If things start to look overwhelming, take a break. Then find something to inspire you, watching Silverquill for instance in your case. And then act on that inspiration to continue your own work. Now don't be over-expecting. Odds are, you're not going to be Silver when you first start out. But alot of the fun in creating content comes in learning and exponentially making a name for yourself in the process. With that, I wish you luck in whatever endeavors you decide to take.
You put more thought into the show than the actual writers of said show. Also the fact you are a fan of Kamen Rider makes me love you even more. Have you considered doing a video or two talking about said riders? I'm kinda curious to hear what you have to say about verious series and what not.
I'm always waiting on your next review, annoyed by how you don't get to them on time(though, don't get me wrong, I understand why), but damn, your editorials are great.
A very interesting interpretation of Luna, Silver. Oh, and as for that Greek mythology reference about the stages of life, don't feel bad. I'm sure Firebrand got it!
The "Dream of Magic Sheep" episode was probably one of those many episodes that was meant to air as part of Season 3, but was delayed due to both Twilight becoming an Alicorn Princess, and Season 3 being cut short for the Development of the Equestria Girls side of the Franchise.
The Maiden, the Mother, the Crone. The Three Fates. The Three Norns of Norse mythology. The Lancre Coven of witches in Terry Pratchett's Discworld that represent the Triple Goddess. Granny Weatherwax, though, is anything but bawdy; that better describes Gytha Ogg.
really love your work SIlver!!! you're the best!! i really wanna see you talking about the changelings, them have a wonderful origen in myths, our about Quenn Chrysalis... a chrysalis archetype perhaps.... Fan from Brazil
Karliene sang it best. "The Crone is very wise and old, and sees our fates as they unfold. She lifts her lamp of shining gold to lead the little children" Does this describe anyone else then Luna? This makes her not just a mentor greater then even Celestia but also shows her mark as a true leader. Well done my fine feathered fiend. Well done Indeed.
Well, at least in Dresden.. which yes is rather close to a lot of folklore, but the actual folklore is varied enough, and like obscure enough... Fates are kind of the go to thing for this. Personally I would have gone with the Lancre Witches.
The Dresden Files (best series is best) did play it up more then most modern renditions. But the old stories of the Fae talk about them a lot as well. But you are correct that Greek Myth is more familiar to most people.
The Maid, Mother, and Crone remind me of the lifecycle of the Asari from Mass Effect. First, you have the Maiden Stage: A young woman full of energy going out into the galaxy in search of adventure. Then, they reach the Matron Stage: Adopting a more grounded and nurturing personality. And, eventually, the Matriarch Stage: Becoming a wise and learned woman who gives advise to anyone who asks for it.
Okay I don't know about you guys and gals thoughts but I keep having a thought on Luna's episode 'Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep'. My thoughts on the episode when it came out was... That it was perfect. The way I see it, Luna is not overrated (In my opinion) but has doubt, She has shown to get over regret yet that doesn't intently mean its just gone. Sometimes the mentality of a person can never forget what we have done, so when we teach another and remember the memory it can feel numb. I see that the episode was a representation of what occurs when we accept what happen but don't let go to be exact. In the episode Luna explains that even after she accepted what she had done, she couldn't move past it and felt the need to punish herself for it. From this led the creation of her punishment the tatabis (or how ever you spell it) which became her overwhelming guilt. This is still my opinion, but I think Luna in this episode represents the part of the mind in people who sometimes feel they can't let go of some events that occurs in their lives. What are your guys/gals thoughts?
since you made me learn words definitions here is one for you. Definition of quill 1 a (1) : a bobbin, spool, or spindle on which filling yarn is wound (2) : a hollow shaft often surrounding another shaft and used in various mechanical devices b : a roll of dried bark 2 a (1) : the hollow horny shaft of a feather - see feather illustration (2) : feather; especially : one of the large stiff feathers of the wing or tail b : one of the hollow sharp spines of a porcupine or hedgehog c : 3pen 3 3 : something made from or resembling the quill of a feather; especially : a pen for writing 4 : a float for a fishing line
While you may still think of "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep" came out too late Silver, your review's supplement video last January has at least made the point of how our past can still haunt and torment in spite of whatever progress we've made in the meantime and still must be confronted eventually. As far as I'm concerned, that episode still served its purpose with that review in mind. Also, that ending score is AWESOME! Loved it when you used it to close out your Scare Master collab review, and it's perfect here for Luna too. So, your next video will be a five-point character study of Spike, MY favorite character?
Hey Silver! Any chance of this becoming a series like your character celebration videos? I didn't know these archetypes were even a thing, and I'm curious now as to what roles the Mane Six and others could fill!
She's been around for at least 1000 years, Silver, pretty sure that she INVENTED half of the dirty jokes in existence.
Exactly.
Did you just reply to you’re own comment agreeing with yourself...?

Eh, if Celestia is the mother I'd say Luna's more of a cool young aunt rather than a grandma
XXlunixXX the whole video is about Luna not being the "grandma".

When you started talking about the crone archetype I couldn't help but be constantly reminded of Toph from Legend of Korra, she really fits that role.

I knew who he was talking about when he mentioned the three fates and was geeking out.
I have to say that this is by far my favorite content to date! Silver you did Luna justice and delivered something wonderful! Thank you!

you are welcome mr quill and for explaining this video because of this my love for luna has grown 20%

Gotta say, this was a great supplement to the convention video talking about archetypes in general. Great music, too.
More archetype videos please, I thoroughly enjoyed what you have made here.

thanks silver for posting. I love watching your videos and hope to see more soon.

Very thought provoking video Silver, I always wondered what archetype Luna was ^^
I noticed the “to kill a mockingbird” reference there and I was born in the 21 century.

this was mostly on the serious talk with comedy added into it
A very interesting interpretation of Luna, Silver. Oh, and as for that Greek mythology reference about the stages of life, don't feel bad. I'm sure Firebrand got it!

I KNEW WHAT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT WITH THE THREE FATES! I'VE BEEN STUDYING GREEK MYTHOLOGY SINCE I WATCHED DISNEY'S HERCULES!
Last time I was this early, people didn't overuse this unfunny joke!
Whether you like it or not, you just added to its power merely by acknowledging it
Milesprower the Brony what the joke?
Six hundred and sixty-sixth fave! Luna is best princess and this video was a treat to watch.

I'm shiping Luna and Silver Quil

Yes! Not alone!
How do you feel about the ship name Silver Moon? Your other choice is Luna Quill.
CodeRed99911 Would you ship him with Nightmare Moon? If it's specifically with Luna, then I'd say the name would be Luna Quill.
Nice video Silver and Merry Christmas!!!!!
What is the music playing while the title is showing just after he gets blasted into the moon, at 2:17?
love this! More Archetypes pleass
You know, the way you described it? Archtypes kinda sound like TVtropes from the past era.
I did like this episode, tho. Thank you for making it.
Cutest crone I ever saw.
Luna is best pony.
