Many people talk about famous guitarists like they are overrated when they really are not, but Danny Kirwan is TRULY underrated. Incredible feeling and tone and passion!
Both Peter Green and Danny Kirwan are the most underrated guitar players of all time. Peter Green in my opinion is one of the best guitar player ever to pick up a guitar. Touch. Style. Rhythm. Influence. The influence of players like Gary Moore. Santana. Snowy white. Noel Gallagher. And even Eric Clapton was envious. Even bands like Judas Priest lol. In fact Gary Moore played Peter greens Les Paul from Fleetwood Mac throughout his career. It doesn't get more influential than that. I think of what amazing guitar players bands like Fleetwood Mac and the Allman Brothers have preduced and wonder why they are so far down on the list? For me its people that just don't understand musicianship... I mean just think of what Legacy Duane Allman left. And the amazing guitar players that that band has produced trying to live up to his name. Like Warren Haynes. Derek Trucks. Jimmy Herring.... I find it astounding that when they do a top 10 influential guitar players that Les Paul is never in the list lol the guy who technically started it all... I agree that guitar players may not be overrated. But they are in a sense where they will put Jeff Beck above Les Paul as more influence...
Rest in peace Danny Kirwan 1950-2018. His beautiful music and guitar playing will never fail to inspire me, and I can speak for most fans of Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac when I say we will miss him dearly.
i wept and prayed 35 years for syd barrett, and will keep at it for danny. we can almost reach the light in his eyes . once upon a time danny was the brightest superstar of all. perhaps his collapse was just a precursor to the supernova to come . pray for him, his son,and all he loves and who love him. god, please bless him
So underrated. Luv how Kirwan busts a string @ 1:51 and blows it off without missing a note. If you look close you can see it's reflection dangling in the lights. Thanks for the music Danny. Rest well my friend and play on.
My favorite part of this clip is hearing Danny's guitar through the room mic at the beginning, 17 seconds into the clip. It sounds ferocious. I think he had the best tone and vibrato of any blues guitarist.
He was a powerhouse on the guitar and so sweet with the vocals. I have to get my daily "dose" of his music. Really wonder what we have missed all these years he's been out of the recording scene. He is just so fragile emotionally, as many highly talented people are. When you look at all the music he is responsible for creating in such a short time span, it's truly amazing, yet he never gets the credit he deserves. I'll take Danny's FM over Stevie's any day. So much more depth and soul.
Peter Green has always been the posterboy for this era of the Mac, but damned if Danny didn't give him a run for his money. Both deserve the equal recognition
Agreed. The sheer amount of material on the albums Danny contributed to, at such a young age, and being on par with Peter in terms of ability to rip out a riff IMO, he is truly one of a kind.
danny is the most unrecognised guitarist of the 60's without a doubt, a truly phenomenal player with real soul & a sweet touch, love you danny boy, peace.
This performance is still amazing by today standards...imagine how good it was in the early seventies..I can still remember the first time I heard this playing..it was something out of this world. Kirwan and Green´s inmortal playing ,a work of art
R.I.P. Danny. I hope you have now found the peace you longed for in your life. To those of us who loved your gift, you'll always be one of the greatest.
Buckingham is 100 times better! Unfortunately, as always. band politics are involved. In a negative fashion! Anyone in the music industry has a job that is as tough as they come! FACT!
There's something about the way that Danny plays... It fills me with such joy 'cause I can sense his passion and enthusiasm. Indeededly, Peter and Danny are an inimitable pair of amazing musicians. They really make the music their own and the tone is superb. I think it was B.B. King who said Peter Green "... has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats."
+personal giggle (slow2melt) You nailed it, friend. It's one thing to listen to Danny, but to watch him work makes me wanna jump and shout. He truly owns that Les Paul and is on fire here!
Glad to see that there is a whole community of people who get it with this Kirwan guy. I am terying to understand how two players can simply play in and out of each others work. Just lovely.
kirwan wrote and sang his own blues songs. he questioned , as did peter, his authenticity as a blues musician. humility is a most endearing quality, and few have it. danny writes as well as anyone, in a variety of styles ; he sings as well as anyone; and guitar is his first love. thankfully he gave us words and his voice to cherish along with his exquisite guitaristry
A hot hot track. I keep coming back to this. Green weaves lines in between Danny's - such great call and response. McVie's in the zone, Fleetwood shuffling.
went to see them at The Electric factory in Phila in 1969 the first show was half full, and they let everyone stay for the second show...went back the next night...same thing! 2 nights, 4 shows, beautiful! one of my favorite memories
How can anyone dislike this ?? Greatest guitar duo with excellent sounds from 50s Les Pauls here, pure quality playing, outstanding rhyth section, groovy bass. Legendary performance.
It's pretty amazing that the original FM recorded so many great songs in such a short period of time - less then 3 years. Just think what more they could have done if Green hadn't decided to leave. Kirwan and Green - what a combination! Both great guitarists, singers and writers, both with their own unique styles. Sure is nice having so much of this stuff available on RUclips. Thanks to everyone who posts these songs/videos!
One of best, if not THE best blues combo, these two MOST apt axemen ...Better together than alone...Saw FM, shortly after Green left and was soooo bummed he wasn't at my first FM gig...Danny seemed lost without him...
Not sure what you're talking about. There is quite a bit of Green footage all over the web, but hardly ANYTHING with Kirwan taking center stage. I find this clip rare and refreshing. Kirwan is a unfairly forgotten talent.
danny was one of the most underated guitarists from that era. More so than Peter i would say. Just because Danny gets absoluty NO mention or praise on any of his work. If you watch the old concert stuff Danny plays more than half of the lead guitar parts when you think your hearing Peter you are really hearing Danny its the same on their records. Its a shame what happened to Peter and Danny they both would have took overif they could have just hung on a few more years.
Absolutely love this clip by the way. Downloaded it a couple of weeks ago and still watching it every night. See Danny cooling his fingers at 1:53? He was burning up the frets!
their music kept getting better and better unlike most bands the music starts out really really good and slowly falls off towards the end. Fleetwood Mac with Peter and Danny just kept getting better especially when they started going outside the box, so to say, of the blues with stuff like albatross and green manalishi. Pure genious these guys had.
Live at the Boston Tea Party - Triple Album (Remastered) LISTEN TO IT FOR THIS KIND OF THING x10! It's incredible. Danny and Peter bouncing off each other with the rhythm section on the best form ever.
The kid definitely had some mojo working that night. Bummer on the Hi E - but its happened to me too plenty. Freddie was a master at the broken string , could restring , sing , play, and yawn at the same time, never miss a beat. C. Meyers told me some great stories. Blues Forever
I watched it twice before I caught the string busting loose. Great to see how he adjusts w/o missing a beat. What a great talent. They're all great together. Glad to find this on RUclips! Best service on th internet.
@Herman Holen ------ Great , as long as some know that danny wrote half of 'then play on' and kirwan gets credit for his work rather than others . I have read comments attributing his songs to Christine, to b welch , and Peter too often. The Chicago blues guys thought Peter was the player one time they heard something great . Peter said " it was the kid".
No ! You've mis- interpreted what happens! As many people have noticed ,he breaks a guitar string ,and, at the moment he realises it has happened , he has to" unwrap" the remains of the string from the fretboard, as it would interfere with the other strings sounding properly- hence his bizzare arm movement (ie it was NOT to relax his hand after too much vibrato !) what is amazing is that he carries on regardless finding a new position on the fretboard to continue playing the riff! THD
Great bad and even more talent to let each one shine thru with there individual runs. And the man that's laying that rood down with that kick bass is driving em boom.
I never got into blues music...for some reason I just didnt get it. Nothing about it appealed to me . But that all changed the minuate i heard DANNY KIRWAN sing ! thank you peter greens fleetwood mac you made a Blues...lover..outta...me.!
@oclero, Indeed almost a million views. That's not bad for a video starring Danny Kirwan:) I have the feeling people are discovering this overlooked genius, with the sexy, haunting vibrato right now. In Like It This Way the mirror effects he does with Peter Green play a leading part, like they were spiritually joined at the hip, although they had completely different guitar tones.
Breaks a String at 1:51 and Continues to Play Without missing a Beat….Very Powerful performance…..”Danny was Emotionally Fragile, often I would look over and notice Danny “Crying” while playing his Guitar”….Peter Green
Wow, Audience sitting quietly. Not seen that in 40 years!. Takes yer back!. An amazing piece of blues guitar work, Danny especially, and he's enjoying it soooo much!. So many bands just sit back and play this kind of stuff without really bothering to put everything into it. Even John McVie does a great job whilst looking like he's right off the planet; I bet he wishes he still looked as young as that today!.
The REAL Fleetwood Mac !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RIP DANNY KIRWAN one of the most beautiful and ferocious melodic guitar players. A sad day today.
