    This was the best B.B. box lesson I've seen on youtube. Thanks Ian.

    • @kellymcgrath5541

      the next box after BB's is called the clapton box. so albert bb and clapton can all be approached similarly for a wide variety of sounds. claptons starts on that 5thof A on the E string. if that makes sense

      Did you mean like the shape based on barred Am on 12th fret;
      Or the pentatonic 1st position based shape (index finger on 5th fret)
      Or something else?

      This! I get that some people find intervals too theoretical ... but the pay-off is huge.

      I was thinking same. And not notes. Scale degrees! Music by numbers. Notes for keys. Each number has its own color and purpose.

    • @stephenbowyer7269

      As gauche as it may seem to theoretical purists, some of us learn by and use fret and string numbers. We arent trying out for Carnegie hill. I would have got more out of this if my hairy friend Stich had stuck it in, up front at no added expense.

    I think teaching students the basics of pentatonics as the BB box, the Albert box etc is a really good way of getting some great sounds early in the guitar playing life of a student. My own personal thought for students is to also listen to how BB got one or two notes to sound so awesome. Bend with confidence and focus on getting the right pitch, shake the notes and don't be timid with your picking!!! Really dig in and get those notes sounding the best they can. Go for quality of note, not the number of notes you play. That's the beauty of the 3 Kings!!! :-)

    Holy crap, Ian! You are amazing. I have been playing what everyone was calling BB's Box based around the 2nd Pentatonic form and of course, the notes work, but I was never really getting that BB feel. So, I watch this and switch to the 3rd position form and suddenly BB King is playing my guitar. I mean, I was instantly channeling his sweet short phrases, without even having to think about it. Now, combining all the rest of the tricks you've taught me and I'm only a little practice away from being a blues monster.
    Wish you were there 40 years ago to raise my playing consciousness. Wow! Jst wow!!!

    Oh I get it. Switching from form 3 for A minor to form 2 for D major. Form 3 to 4 gives you a change from minor to major and form 4 to form 2 changes by a fourth from A to D. CAGED arranged in fourths order is forms 1, 4, 2, 5, 3 or G, C, E, A, D shapes. So actually he’s starting out in the BB king box (shape D) and morphing into the Albert King box (shape E) on the switch to the four chord.

    I was listening to Sirius Xm today to hear John Mayer guest DJ about his favorite Dead Songs - let’s call it Johns Picks. John picked “Next Time You See Me” from Dicks Picks 35. John said that he always knew Jerry could play the blues, but hearing this one you would think he was a blues legend. As I’m listening, Pigpen calls for Jerry to have a second solo, and low and behold, he goes right for the BB box! I was so excited to recognize it, and never would have without this lesson. Wanted to share, and thank you for all the knowledge and work you put in.

    I just started moving my pentatonic scale improvisation with the chord, I was doing this without knowing what I was doing, mostly with the 6 now seeing the 2 as well. Now that I understand it, thanks to this excellent lesson/discussion, understanding more of what is going on is only going to make me better at this. Makes me wonder how BB looked at it, I bet he was picking from the 7th chord (like you outlined), so cool!!!
