  • Neuroeconomist Jordan Silberman describes how an EEG tied to a simple visual feedback system can allow its users to exercise and improve their everyday ability to exact self-control.
    Jordan Silberman is graduate student of medicine and psychology at the University of Rochester, where he studies neuroeconomics
    Jordan will be telling us about the neurological basis of self-control; he suggests that we think about it in a new way. Self-control can be trained and fatigued, much like a muscle. Jordan will describe an EEG biofeedback training system that enables people to 'flex' the neural substrate of self-control.
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    It would have been interesting to find out what the participants were thinking when the bar went up and what they were thinking when the bar went down. Are there commonalities? Are these thoughts different for everyone? And, different how?

    Love to see how we are evolving as a species. Fascinating talk. If people applied this to food- studies would show less medical concerns and longer life span for the large percentage of population that is unhealthy (not meant as an negative connotation at all) in rat race type environment fresh healthy food is not always available. Just using as an example.
    Thank you. This is a contribution to humanity.

    Because they did illustrate the point. What the actual experiments were in detail, while interesting, is not essential in this particular talk, whose main point was that self-control can be trained. As the point of this talk was not to describe how these experiments were conducted, it is sufficient enough to state that good experiments have been made.

    Some people aren't very conscious about the triggers to their slip-ups, so having a device that alerts them when their brain acts a certain way could help them get off autopilot.
    But yeah.. practice...

    Going onto the brain bar thing itself. It's flawed too. Their basically getting better at self control in that environment. It's not necessarily going to translate into better overall self control. Even if the people do demonstrate better self control they already seem primed and willing to have "self control" by undergoing that test every day. In essence it may be a placeboesque effect only it's on the researchers. They need to make it an actual test of self control.

    I agree, if we can do that hooked to a machine, we can do that by ourselves. The benefit of the machine is that there is no emotional involvement with the things with which people fail to have self-control, therefore they can train their brains without the feelings of blame and incapacity that are already associated with self-restraint due to much failure in doing it. They can find their self-confidence and apply it later.

    Well, for instance, we could use it in the treatment for repetitive rapist or people with anger management issues. For people who can't control them self in certain basic situations, e.g. around children or females, people with strong phobias etc etc

  • @YXalr
    @YXalr 10 лет назад

    There's no false info. All that is being said is based on real experiments, and the clips used in this talk are mere illustrations of the problem they are trying to solve. The point of this talk is not "we have shown that children have more/less self control in situation X/Y". If you're interested, those studies are one google search away. The point of the talk is "what can be done about it", so it is not necessary to go into detail in explaining how the problems were identified.

    Best work I ever do and experiences I have, are in that place just outside my control - is there a danger that we create automatons or have too many scientist been watching too much Star Trek and fancied themselves as Spock? PS I do know that self control is about the ability to consciously (as he put it) move the bar up an down, but that 'c' word is missing from the presentation!

    I wonder what other things can be done like that.
    I've heard of mental training of calming yourself down before this self-control variant.
    But how about something like, say, acting creatively. Is creativity too wide-spread throughout the brain or could you do a raise-the-bar-challenge of that too?

    deriving a thinking strategy or state of mind would be much more interesting than the prospect of hooking myself up to a machine years from now.
    you even tell the participants some thing along the lines of "what are you thinking? more of that please" but you don't tell us. somewhat disappointing.

    Plus eating is a survival need. It would've been better had the kid been informed that they're preparing to order their favorite food but if they eat the marshmallow they're forbidden from eating it. That's a better test of self control than just saying to a kid don't eat it. Plus what if the other kids simply weren't hungry? Don't like marshmallows, don't want some random piece of food on the desk? There's so many variables that it's a weak test of self control.

  • @thetwist111
    @thetwist111 10 лет назад +1

    It's still flawed. Watching it again the kid is left *alone* in a room for 15 min and told not to eat it. The dog is *watched* told to wait for a moment then it's okayed to eat. I realize I focused on the wrong thing now though. The dog isn't demonstrating self control at all. It's control of an individual while being closely monitored by a person in the room and abiding to their wishes.

    "Like I said why not dramatize the actual tests?"
    Because, as I stated, the tests are not the point of the talk. It would take more time to go into detail when describing the actual experiments, so it is enough to give a simple idea of what the tests were about.

  • @logandwilliams
    @logandwilliams 9 лет назад +14

    Well no shit we can change our self control... show us how to do it more effectively. There is really nothing new here.

  • @YXalr
    @YXalr 10 лет назад

    Neither of the videos were of actual experiments performed by these people. They were there just for dramatization purposes.

  • @thetwist111
    @thetwist111 10 лет назад

    There are various problems with this experiment and idea of self control starting with the initial "self control" success/failure presentation. The dog is operating on the assumption that a few moments later he's going to be allowed to eat anyway. The kid doesn't have that. In fact there's plenty of reason to assume he's not going to get another chance at it. Think of all the stores the kid has to see food that they can't eat. So right off the base idea of "self control" is flawed.

    cPeople have said that some of the best times they have had was with me when i bump into them years later. im a cool person but i am afraid when a person offends me i will consider the consequentness. and my reaction is to knock them out or if im out numbered. like im getting picked on. if a garage rips me off if a neighbour is a nasty bastard to kids in the street. im like a one man crusade. i am financially comfortable and dont work. im 50+ and have time to go out at all hours and reap my revenge i have got it off to a fine art. if i dont have a fight with the person if they are to old to hit. i hit them in the pocket or worry them and make there life miserable. i think i have been but on this earth to put asshols in there place. Here are some of my payback's. Paint on drive way. Out side a persons house is a water tap plug on a hose pipe it doesn't have to be to long and put it though the letterbox and go home. Spray expanding foam up there exorcist pipe then push a rag up so it wont be seen in the mourning the car will never start and they will never fix the problem. Put there electricity meeter on the fiddle they go to court. Burn the car. Send sex toy to a asshole neighbour and inside the box have the receipt add to there neighbour and imagine the embarrassment you have done to them. Spray pant in large letters a (Garage That ripped you off)business phone number and name of business on a near by wall hopefully another like business and watch them fight it out. At least the owner will be forced to pay to get it removed. The worst one i did was break into a house and remove a studded wall and there banister. Now you may be doubting me. in my early days i was a very successful thief never did do prison maybe luck maybe skill i dont no. If you are thinking doing any of these things to anyone do your home work and most of all always do it in the dark and when it is raining if its at a place were you have got to drive... dirty you number plate up one number will do. they may guess it was you but they will never be able to prove it. Let at least 6 months pass before you get revenge on them. you might think im a tit hes just admitted it......... the police know all about me NO PROOF NO CHARGE. I do these things totally cool

    It's a pity that he carries a materialistic view of the self, but for the rest, excellent presentation.

  • @thetwist111
    @thetwist111 10 лет назад

    All it illustrates is that there's false info in the presentation itself. The actual experiments to come to this conclusion would've been immensely more relevant and more informative. Wasting time with irrelevant dramatizations is even less essential than dramatizations of actual experiments. It is not sufficient enough to state that good experiments have been made.

  • @mcoftheyear4000

    Nope. Humans are not robots. Is like saying humans are trees. There some similarities, but humans robots are two very different things. No explanation needed, you are smart enough to figure it out. #this is for the comments i read on this. If you think your a Robot, sorry to break the news (not really), You are HUMAN, like it or not.

  • @thetwist111
    @thetwist111 10 лет назад

    " All that is being said is based on real experiments,"
    Then what's with this then?
    "Neither of the videos were of actual experiments performed by these people. "
    Also this:
    "to simplify the less essential points"
    Like I said why not dramatize the actual tests? Creating an entire fiction of tests when actual tests were done in order to "simply information" is stupid. You can simplify the info by dramatizing the actual tests just fine. Why fake info making it no better than an episode of CSI???

  • @YXalr
    @YXalr 10 лет назад

    The presenter has limited time. Sometimes it is wiser to simplify the less essential points in order to get to the gist of the talk more quickly.

    Then it holds zero relevance to this presentation and going on about the "marshmallow test" evidence at 2:30 is a complete waste of time. The dramatizations should be relevant to the topic itself. Why not dramatize actual self control tests instead of wasting time with dog versus human eating vids? If you're right all it does is make the presentation worse.
