Brilliant video mate. I learnt so much about this tree! Hard choice on that potato root but I feel like you made the right one. It would be cool to get another tree from the root cutting! Please do an update on this tree at the end of the growing season 👍
Thanks a ton! I've noticed that in my day-to-day life as well. Crazy how just talking to a camera and uploading it knowing people will watch it can improve confidence 💪😅
Thanks! The Baobab is a really cool tree and there's some really awesome bonsai from it out there 🌳 If you can get your hands on one you should definitely create a bonsai from it
Unfortunately none of the cuttings made it. The cuttings pushed out new leaves but then it all fell off and died. The main tree is still alive and growing well. I also baught a new big Baobab that I can get new cuttings from and try again 😁🌳🌞🌱
Any updates on the cuttings now? I started one Baobab from seed 1 year ago, live in Norway so it is very difficult to care for it during winter months. If the cuttings work a will try it myself when my tree is big enough
The cuttings did have leaves on them, but they didn't grow. It is winter now so they are just tiny sticks in a pot at the moment. I'll have to wait until Spring to know for sure if they rooted
I am planning to grow the cuttings in larger pots for a very long time until they are really thick. I really need more Baobabs, they are cool trees 😁🌳🌞
Thanks! 😊 I use a pre-mix soil I get from a bonsai nursery. I am not sure what is in it. Next time I am there I'll try and remember to ask. Just make sure that the soil you use is very free draining. Baobabs easily gets root rot if the roots stay too wet 🌳☀️
Looking forward to seeing the results of your experiment. I'm also wondering if you can grow another baobab tree from a root segment. This only seems to work with a limited nunber of species. Good luck!
Thanks! It is not needed. I've never wired any of my trees into the pot. We don't get a lot of wind, and if we do it is not strong winds at all. It won't be able to blow my trees over. If my trees are a bit unstable in the pot, I'll place a rock on top of the soil 🌳😊
I got mine at Safari Garden Centre in Pretoria. You can try a Mikibu bonsai nursery in Olifantsfontein, Sawasdee Bonsai & Orchids near Kyalami and Jo-Da bonsai in Kempton
Hello! I am looking for tips with my Baobab trees. I live in a cold climate up north so the trees are inside and have lost their leaves for winter (dry season). i have not watered them without leaves but I am wondering what causes them to begin to leaf again? is it temperature or humidity or something else? I am also wondering when is the best time to repot them is as they are all in their original seed pots and most likely need new soil to be happy. Thank you, and great video.
Hi! It sounds like it might be too hot inside and it is breaking dormancy. Try keeping it around 10°C-15°C over winter. The best time to repot is in Spring when the buds are swelling 🌞🌳😊
Doesn't sound like a problem, if that is your goal 😂 As soon as you pot a tree, the growth will slow down. Also after repotting a tree might not grow a lot while recovering and adjusting to the new pot. Placement also plays a big role. Is your tree in the ground or much bigger pot? 🌳🌱🌞
@@KleinBonsai Actually it's just in a normal pot. But I gave him good soil and it had lots of sun and heat. He seems to like that a lot. I didn't want him to grow that fast but wanted to give him good growing conditions. I guess I overdid it a bit 🙄
Small but tough. What a Solid Baobab you got there👍🏻
Thanks! 🌳🌞
Many thanks for a video! Have to be continued! 🙂👍
Thanks for watching! 😁🌞🌳 The Boabab is starting to wake up now
Love the pot and the tree Matthew, I'll be repotting mine for the first time this coming spring! I hope the cuttings all grow.
Thanks! 🌳😊

Thanks! Yeah, keeping my fingers crossed that the root cutting will grow 🤞
Great work Matthew! I learnt a few new things about the baobab tree too! 🐦💙
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😊🌳
Thank you Matthew! Fascinating to love about a tree I’ve not come across before 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊🌳
You should put sulphur on the bulbous cut, let it dry for a week.then plant
Thanks, I'll remember for next time. Do you do that for propagating cuttings as well? 🌳☀️
One of my favourite trees - great video! Very interested in the outcome of your root planting experience - please keep us updated.
Will do! 😊🌳
Wow nice pot I love the orange coloration just love this pot nice video my friend I have 3 baobabs
Thank you! 😊🌳🌱
Great video Matthew and it is amazing how you come across more confident each time you upload. I am loving the content. Cheers, Xav

@@KleinBonsai Just keep on talking to yourself and you will rule the country one day!
Lots of good information about the baobab tree. Thank you for sharing. I'm looking forward to seeing if that 'potato' root actually grows.
Keeping my fingers crossed 🤞
Looks nice in that pot 😄Really interesting video! I haven't tried to Bonsai the Baobab yet!
Thanks! The Baobab is a really cool tree and there's some really awesome bonsai from it out there 🌳 If you can get your hands on one you should definitely create a bonsai from it
really good video ,thanks mate, ill be making a boabab video soon, thanks for the advice
Awesome! Glad I could help 😊🌳🌞
Update?
Will do an update again in spring. It is currently winter ☀️🌳
Yes tjom! Did the potato take? And the cuttings? Give us an update there?
Unfortunately not. I'm not sure if they can grow from root cuttings, but even the normal cuttings didn't take
Im about to grow baobab from seeds for creating a bonsai/s, very excited.
Thanks a lot Matthew. Great video. What happened to the cuttings and root?
Unfortunately none of the cuttings made it. The cuttings pushed out new leaves but then it all fell off and died. The main tree is still alive and growing well. I also baught a new big Baobab that I can get new cuttings from and try again 😁🌳🌞🌱

Put it in a huge pot or the ground and it will swell. I love those trees
I am planning to grow the cuttings in larger pots for a very long time until they are really thick. I really need more Baobabs, they are cool trees 😁🌳🌞
Great video. What kind of soil are you using? I just received seeds I ordered and this will be my next Bonsai endeavor. I live in a warm/hot climate.
Thanks! 😊 I use a pre-mix soil I get from a bonsai nursery. I am not sure what is in it. Next time I am there I'll try and remember to ask. Just make sure that the soil you use is very free draining. Baobabs easily gets root rot if the roots stay too wet 🌳☀️
Any updates on the baobab? You have a well branched specimen there with a clear trunk and well developed canopy up top. Off to a good start!
Thanks! 😊 The baobab is dormant at the moment. It does not have any leaves and is just patiently waiting for spring 🌳
Looking forward to seeing the results of your experiment. I'm also wondering if you can grow another baobab tree from a root segment. This only seems to work with a limited nunber of species. Good luck!
I really hope it does! 🤞
was it growing from remaining cuttings ?
The main tree isn't a cutting. The main tree is alive and healthy but the cuttings all died unfortunately
Nice video. Just a question - Why did you not wire the plant to the pot?
Thanks! It is not needed. I've never wired any of my trees into the pot. We don't get a lot of wind, and if we do it is not strong winds at all. It won't be able to blow my trees over. If my trees are a bit unstable in the pot, I'll place a rock on top of the soil 🌳😊
@@KleinBonsai that makes sense! Thanks man. Now which nursery’s in JHB stock these Boababs? 😬
I got mine at Safari Garden Centre in Pretoria. You can try a Mikibu bonsai nursery in Olifantsfontein, Sawasdee Bonsai & Orchids near Kyalami and Jo-Da bonsai in Kempton
Bro. Which month month do you recommend reporting in south Africa. I am in Gauteng
When the buds start to swell and the leaves start to push out. That is when the tree wakes up from its dormancy 🌳🌞
hope you have success, we don't see many of these
Thanks! 🌳😊
how is tree doing? waiting for the update.
The baobab is growing really well! Will make an update video soon 🌞🌳😊
@@KleinBonsai great to hear!! i have 4 baobab for 4years now. plan cut the root as you did.

Soil mix??
It is a pre-mix. I will have to find out what exactly is in there and report back to you 😊
Can we get an update?
I'll make an update video in spring ☀️🌱
I wonder what's wrong with my Baobab. It grew double the size of this tree in just 5 months 🤔

Only other thing I can think of to slow down growth is to use a smaller pot 😅
