  • Wellll that didn't exactly pan out how I wanted it to... but hey I guess it goes to show that even if you've been doing something for a while you can still make stupid mistakes! I'll revisit the little fast plane later. I'm honestly surprised how long it took me to find out it was just a CG issue! Don't trust the CG markings on a similar model from the internet I guess! But anyway Stan is a much cooler plane worthy of a video. He was created by a bunch of teenagers from scratch!! So he'll carry the play button skyward! and what better way to do it than with a load of kno3 Sugar rockets!

I like 'Stan'. It reminds me of a rare WW2 RAF aircraft called an 'Armstrong-Whitworth Albemarle' It was designed as a medium bomber, but it had very advanced flight characteristics, was very, very tough, and unusually, a tricycle undercarriage. It was used mainly for 'hush hush' jobs like spy dropping or recovery of, say crashed V2 rocket parts, or leaflet dropping, or as a glider tug, or early electronic warfare. Fact is, most people today have no idea it existed. I saw one mentioned in a 'Biggles' book when I was a kid, and it took years actually to find out what one looked like. It looked rather like 'Stan'. Loved the RATO idea. Grant Thompson, 'The King Of Random' has a very detailed video on making sugar rockets - and another using his kids' Lego to test various fuel ratios with. His rocket method is very precise. Worth watching. Ever thought of mounting a rocket on a boat? Nah. That's a really bad idea, although...

This is extremely rare footage of the Germans testing the infamous V1 rocket. (1944 colorized)
This is actually how the V1 got invented.
    1. The inventor made an RC plane.
    2. The inventor thought that the RC could be fighter pilot practice.
    3. He thought that strapping a bomb to an RC would be great which led to the V1.

As an old fart former pilot (most hours in a Mooney M20C) I have to say that I enjoyed this immensely. The finale JATO takeoff was a thing of beauty; I was amazed at how well your attitude was held so stable. I fully expected that the rocket ignition would totally overcome your ability to maintain control. I suppose the unintended sequential ignitions of the rocket motors turned out to be a real boon to the performance of the aircraft. Either way it turned into an EXTREME joy to watch! Congratulations on the success! (BTW, I have seen a few of your videos, so I recognize that your skill level is quite high.)

Jet-Assisted Take Off! just like the C-130 Fat Albert!
Do you already have a video on how to make homemade rocket engines? Or could you make one in the future? As a teenager I loved using Estes rocket engines in very unconventional ways (trying to make a shoe fly (spoiler: it didn't), adding them to those firework battle tanks, etc) and just loved DIY firework stuff in general. We would buy stuff at the store and modify it and then battle against each other. It's been about 10 years and I want to get back into it, but with a college education and some electronics experience, along with inspiration from RUclipsrs like yourself, I would love to make stuff way better than I could have before. It would be a miracle if teenage me wasn't on some type of watch list for buying 20 lbs of potassium nitrate on eBay.

Cant wait to see what else you do with STAN, we had a great time building him, flying him, and hanging with you and the other cool people at FliteFest. He basically turned STAN into a C-130 gunship with rocket assisted takeoff epic XD. Ok now can you find a way to make the rockets fly on their own and remain stable in the air. If so you should totally rig STAN up with rockets for some sweet strafing runs.

That Stan looks like a flying Hobo's house. Just use Estes rocket motors, a long servo lead or cut the servo off the end. Then use the polarity wires, solder the Estes igniter onto the ends of the wires. Select a free channel on the receiver, preferably a free switch or rotary on the TX & plug the igniter into the motor wherever you've stuck it & away you go. Use it for either a boost motor or to fire rocket propelled projectiles. Instead of sending power to the motor or servos it will ignite the motor(s) on the channel.

To get the sugar rockets to work, mix stump remover and powered sugar in a 65% sump remover and 35% sugar by weight. Leave as a powder. Get a pvc tube and a wooden rod that fit snugly inside. Pack a bentonite clay plug approximately 2cm thick, buy placing the tube on a hard flat surface and puck the plug in increments by hitting the rod with a rubber mallet. Then pack the white powder in increments into the tube in the same fashion. The smaller the increments and the harder you pack the powder the more power the rocket will have. Leave room for a second plug and make it the same as the first. Then get a 5mm drill bit and drill slowly down the centre of then motor until you reach the top plug. Insert a sparkler as a fuse and enjoy. Hope this gets seen and is of use.

Just need alot more rockets so you can get a few good bursts at different intervals like a jet fighter. Perhaps a remote ignighter

you don't have to cook it down if you are using powdered sugar and milled kno3. put the kno3 inside a ball mill for a few hours and mix it up with the sugar. Then just pack it into motors with a wooden dowel.

    Damn, those explosions

  • @laurenceperkins7468
    @laurenceperkins7468 7 лет назад

If they're exploding you're probably getting air pockets in them. Mixing in a little ethanol will make it runnier and mitigate that, but then you have to wait for it to evaporate, which can take quite a while.
If you want slightly better performance, a wooden nozzle won't expand as much as the fuel burns and is cheap. If you want a lot better performance designing a metal nozzle for the thrust parameters you want involves relatively simple math that's easy to look up online and you can reuse the nozzle between engines as long as you make everything a consistent size. (And don't lose them...)

Try baking the potassium nitrate, it absorbs moisture out of the air and then it doesn't ignite as fast, if you want to try to make another type of rocket engine try packing the potassium nitrate and sugar instead of almost caramelizing it.
The only problem with the packing method is you need a solid nozzle or it just falls apart, what I mean is you need to put something like clay on the ends and then drill the nozzles out, you should watch Grant Thompson's video of him making sugar rockets
