BEST RESULT!! How To Paint Brake Calipers

- In this video, I will show you how to properly paint the paint calipers on your vehicle. Follow the steps I show you and you will get the same excellent result.
HOW MANY CANS OF PAINT I USED TO PAINT ALL 4 CALIPERS??
As to quantity of paint I used, I ended up using 1.5 (2) cans of the burnt copper base paint, and 1 can of primer, and 1 can of clear. The reason for the 2 cans of base paint maybe to do I with one of the caliper got messed up with the sticker, so I had to repaint it. Otherwise I think one can of each should be good.
As for how much time to do this project. The drying time between coat is what takes up most of the time. Also depending on the ambient temperature and humidity, that will effect drying time. But if you are doing one side at time like I did, and the number of coats as shown in the video, expect about 6 hours time.

Just some tips I want to share as a cars/aircraft painter.. I would prefer masking with paper instead of bags. Over spray on the bags causes flakes. When you remove the bags, it will flake onto your caliper but it's a caliper so it's okay. However, If you were to paint a car then mask it with paper. It sucks sanding flakes out. Also, if you boil a pot of hot water and put your clear coat can in it, the spray is amazing. it creates a cloud like with no spitting.. Great job.
If you want a smoother finish so the paint and clear pop, I'd also use a hight heat primer....Otherwise, clean walkthrough and process. Great Job!
It's engine primer, that is high heat. Up to 550F° lol.. I think it looks that way because the calipers metal finish itself isn't all that smooth!
@@EscapePlanSkateboarding what color of paint is that?
When applying the decal, Apply the center first then work your way to the outside. That way there is no chance for bubbles to remain and overall have the smoothest finish. Make sure you press down evenly to make sure it's set to the surface well before removing the applicator. You can see that dial2fast had a few instances of it still sticking to the applicator. Wait till the paint is dry enough too!! But try to put the clearcoat on within 30 minutes depending on your environment to have a good bond between basecoat and clearcoat.
One day I may set my car up in a body shop I have access too, but lay the paint from cans, unless I can get high heat paint for shop sprayers.
I've seen other examples where a base coat of black (or whatever color you want the decal lettering to be) is applied over the primer, then once it dries the decal goes in place, followed by the base color, overlapping the decal in the process. While the paint is still wet a precision tool like an exacto knife is used to pry up the decal and revealing the black under layer. I imagine a lot of patience is required but that's how I saw it done in another video where a man was restoring the calipers on a Mazda Miata.
Mistah J a cleaner stencil look without any vinyl left. More advanced method but surgical hands and patience will do the trick with that. Thanks for sharing. That’s my comment on an old account
The garbage bag and masking was smart, never thought to do that.
How did the vinyl hold up to the heat over time? Can you send updated pictures?
“Hi I’m Johnny Knoxville, welcome to Jackass!!!” *proceeds to paint a caliper without taking it off the fucking car* 😂😂😂
I understand the project. But that's a brand new car with brand new calipers. I suppose it's more elbow greece for me then. Great video 🏁
Yes, its a totally different prospect if your car is few years old and your calipers are in bad shape. I wanted mine to look brand new so I took them off to do them which is a lot of work. But the result was good.
One of the cleanest videos ive seen! Colour is amazing also man well done :D
I never thought it needs so many layers of paint...Im taking mine for powder coating coz i started to hate simple paint. Very easily get scratched
Love the pic of the dobe
@@everage86 oooh thanks man 🤩🤩
what color of paint is that?
@@vralphbryanCooper
Great job and thank you for sharing this project!
That's easily one of the best caliper finishes thanks to the attention to detail.
Great attention to detail! I'll be doing this with my Mazdaspeed 6 and my wife's Kia Sedona next Spring when it warms up. Will also do the decal option as well for both cars...but only after I smoother it out with my Makita die grinder like you did with the stone and drill. Great idea using the engine enamel to achieve a great selection of colors. Well done and great video quality.
Beautiful. At first I was a little hesitant about the color, but after the job was done. They look amazing. Great work.
Nissan uses this colour for a lot of their sport models (350z, G35, R35 etc.) I'm going to do the same, it looks great.
@@prism9926 what color of paint is that?
Good for 5HP
I had never thought about painting the caliper on the car. Nice job, well done!
Looks amazing - thanks for sharing.
Great video!
First well done regular brake caliper painting video I’ve seen. Tasteful paint choice also. I’ll probably go with a nice gunmetal color.
Should do a video on brembos...i like the way you explain and took apart makes it easier....appreciate it man
12:07. Before putting the wheels back, I hope he cleaned the base where the wheel rests from rust.
I’m curious about the longevity of the vinyl sticker logos. Will they stay in good shape after some hot and heavy braking?
This was actually done several months back, and still looking good in the Georgia heat.
@@dial2fast awesome, thanks!
First thing I asked myself! How quick those would melt off! 😂
Oops I just asked this , that's what I wanted to know. I'm guessing lot of people thought the same thing
I think the layers of clear coat keeps the vinyl logo intact.
How has the vinyl sticker held up since the application? Would you recommend the stickers or a stencil to paint the name/logo on, instead (once the paint cures, so you don't have that problem you had)?
The vinyl held up fine. It still looks like it did when I installed it.
This was probably the best video I saw on how to do this! Nice work..
best ever colour, BEST EVER, for calipers. I didn't know such a color code for spray cans even exists 😅
Really well-done, man! Thanks so much. This color is really going to pop against my blue IS-F...
Will chip very shortly. After 3 times trying with VHT, I went with G2 caliper paint system. Easy and it’s on there PERMANENTLY!
Yep, aerosol spray on calipers is pointless unless you like painting them every 3-4 months
Nice video. Considering painting my black calipers on my Mustang GT red
WOOOW VERY NICE I LIKI AT

FROM IRAQ BAGHDAD
One good trick when masking off sharp edges is to use a flat hammer and lightly tap the metal edges. It will cut the masking tape off right in the spots you need masked. Great video!
And to to that, brake in pieces after that u need to tools to put back the brakes and special tools ,not so easy as u show,if u don't put it back correctly u might end up without brakes...
Great paint job 😎 btw. From my past experiences that won't last too long. All the heat cycles will allow all the paint to start peeling. Add that to living in the salt belt and the calipers are done as far as looks. So i went the way of powder coating and that was 16 years ago now and still looks brand new. I got them done as they needed to be bead blasted.
You are right
This is the CLEANEST brake painting I have ever seen! So clean and amazing attention to detail. Just subbed!! Great work good sir.
Thank you for the wonderful comment!
@@dial2fast anytime! I watched a video before seeing yours and I’m so glad I watched it. More instruction, more small details, better in every way. Made me want to start my project immediately. Lol
don't even need that high heat resistant paint . unless you're braking at 130 mph 17 times a day . a good regular paint is just fine . awesome video
Greets from germany. Very good job! Nice color, clean work, looks great!!! 👌✨
Since its gold its going 24k mph faster now 😁 nice work
brakes weren't serviced you might wanna mention that , pins/bushings/slides/ears , and anti seize , permatex on the backing plates to keep them quiet , also VHT high temp paint dries in minutes and is chemical resistant - clear coat after if you really want , should service the brakes / put new rubbers etc first then clean and paint , don't forget to torque you bolts properly , i cant imagine how many people tried this and ended up snapping the little caliper bolts , also you can get green/brown pads to really speed up cleaning the metal if needed , normally id do this on a fresh set of calipers and not some rusty ones that are 100k older or more
Can you paint my brakes I’ll pay you 😭
Francisco Rubalcaba do it yourself you lazy bastard
Great video man i just purchased a new caliper off amazon and it appears to be cast.. the color is a shiny silver. I am not sure if they spray painted it or it has some zinc coating that I hear a lot about... was wondering what is the best way to get paint to adhere to this. I have tried using just caliper paint and it just beaded off like water... I also sanded before hand and it did nothing. I was wondering if I need a special primer or will any high heat primer work? Like vht engine enaml primer?
appreciate the attention to detail!
Do you only need 1 bottle of each of the paint and primer for all 4 callipers? Thanks
a hellova lotta work just to avoid bleeding the brakes... which is easy once you learn how. you have some good attention to detail and some skill, but this job should have been done off the car. of course I understand you are going for a wider audience this way but bleeding the brakes is a good skill.
Thought this was a chrisfix video for a second lol. Amazing results 😍
Gtfo.
They totally sound so similar
I couldn't find high temperature clear coat anywhere unfortunately.
Beautiful job. I just got new Slotted and drilled Rotors all around for my ecoboost explorer. Would like to this in ford blue but not sure I have the time. Thanks for taking the time & posting 👍
I just bought EBC yellow pads and will likely paint the calipers yellow on my white explorer. All the time in the world now with quarantine.
Awesome color choice. Thanks for sharing bro.
how many cans did you need for all 4 calipers???
Why bother all that covering up when it's only a few bolts to undu to take the calipers off and move right away from your car to paint
prob dont want to deal with disconnecting the brake lines and accidentally introduce air or moisture into the brake system
Bleeding the brakes sucks.
Excellent work.
Nice job! How many cans in total did it require?
I wish I saw this video before I painted 🎨 my caliper 😞
Why? What happened?
FatherOfTwoBoyZ I messed up mine 😢 . Cause I didn’t know how to do it correctly
best job remove the caliper cover up inside and hoses and spray some people use a heatproof primer after they clean up the poor factory castings theres also a clear i find the paint dont last without a good bonding agent first
LOL. Brake calipers will never heat up tp 650 degrees.
Well done. Curious to know how is it holding up?
Where are you located and how much do you charge ?
Is it possible that we can just do the plastic technique for all 4 tires like how you did to the rear tires?
Why does every statement sound like a question??????
you can also paint them with a high quality brush... will be just as nice..
This clear gloss doesn't look like a glue just clear like the body of the car
Could I use 2k clear lacquer or does it need to be high temp? I will but the VHT high temp primer and then got some high temp gold but wondered if 2k clear is ok?
question the spray paint will not easily react on brake fluid ?
you have the best video on youtube; good job
He definitely just taught me something
I put Nismo decals on my 2023 Nissan Ariya
Why didn't you remove the rear caliper as well?
Wow, I would like to do it, really amazing.
Nice job, get some rims now bro to show the calipers
Is it really necessary to use high heat paint? 🤔
Just buy Brembos and if your broke...save up till you can.
I am the nerd that says THANK YOU for mentioning safety glasses! Haha. Good work!
How long did it all take
how are the calipers holding up after 2 years?
And how did you bake them at 200 degrees for an hour?
Great job on the work and video!
You must not live in the rust belt lol
Nope
@@dial2fast lucky!
As I’m grinding off rusty rocker panels, filling em with foam, and bondoing the heck out of it! Next step some light sanding and rustoleum and boom! I can pass inspection!
I liked grinding idea to smooth out the die cast lines and the decals with the clear coat on top!
Why didnt you paint it while it was removed?
A few minutes after painting, you should drive for some time until smoke starts to come out from the calipers; that's in order to heat cure the paint. This assures the finish will last longer and withstand brake heat much better without peeling.
Did you loose the break hose out from the caliper or not
Awesome job!!! Keep up the very good work you have been doing over the years I love your videos and God bless you
Thanks for your support!!
Looks like alot work I'll stick to the enamel kit less mess and prep . Only for show anyway great job if you got the time
Is this even legal to this sir?
will not last waist of time neeed two part paint and clear harder
Thank you very much! I will do mine when changing my brake rotors and pads! ( should be soon!)
How many cans of each thing did you use?
Hey, neighbor! (fellow Georgian here). Excellent video. I'm planning to do this for my dark grey Subaru Crosstrek in that very orange to match the interior accents. This video was very helpful since I do want to remove the pads and hardware, but don't want to pull the calipers off completely. I will wait until I need new pads.
I'm runnin behind I watch your vid like 6mos ago on doing my platinum max its white I had some r1 concept black zinc looks great no more rust seeing in the brake system much cleaner look but I wana do like canary yellow I have some 22" kmc prizm black with infenty lipe what do u think jw thanks
My Asian brother is doing it 👍 the right way.
Dang look at those rust free calipers lol
Best way is still powder coating
just junk the nissan,, also if its a new car you just killed any warranty... which u will need because nissans are junk
Half the fun of RUclips is reading people's comment. Thanks for the good laugh!
Great job
Why do you take the front off and leave the rear on?
Done this plenty of times and you should take calipers off but paint off car (avoid wasted time covering other parts). If you want a smoother finish sand between paint coats. Please have a mask against ... Dangers of Isocyanates...While you got your caliper off..why not for $1 spray can of paint at Walmart paint your suspension which will have a coating of protection against rust and other elements enemy to your suspension. I painted mines all black ...
After 1 year, how is the paint holding up?
Still look the same with some brake dust on it.
I don't know call me crazy but that is way to much work for caliper paint job😂
Just take the caliper off!!
What a great video! Thank you.
I had mines powdercoated and yours look just as good GREAT JOB I'll try myself next time
Very good and clean job. I think my caliper will be the next ones. Thank you for the video, happy thanksgiving.
This looks so sick i have 18N/M Platinum white i have 22s kmc prism black fitted with black disks machine drilled i need a crazy dope color for these calpers or should i change calipers thanks for the vid love it
You painted the rear brake pads too 😂
