  • Precise Details of NH come to visit the 928 to show what they can do to restore my Porsche 928’s paintwork but it’s not all plain sailing! I think there may be parts of this car’s paintwork which is too far gone for the skills of even the most diligent car detailer! In this video we will take a complete walk around of my Porsche 928 with Shawn and Doug of Precise Details and they give me their expert opinions as to what extent this car’s paintwork can be saved by detailing and which parts needs fresh paint. The aim is to get it to a good driver state and not a 100 point concours restoration. What potential do we have here?
    Subscribe to follow my story with this car’s restoration. We’ve already made some great progress but there’s lots more to do and, I suspect, lots more money to spend on my Porsche 928!

    I think there are lots of us who want to enjoy the car without stressing every minor chip. Porsches love to be driven, not constantly polished in a garage. Great video series Jay. 👍🏻

    Save up for a total respray, you’ll feel better after it. That color is awesome when done correctly.

      How much do you think that would cost though?

      @@JAYREADa 928 is a very precisely put together car. Quite complex. I’ve saw one a few years ago painted with the windows and trim taken out and put back together that cost $25,000. So I’m guessing it very well could easily cost that now since inflation took hold in the last 3 years.

    Great video.
    I disagree on the manual swap. It will never be the same.
    There is likely a buyer for this car. You've learned a lot from it. Find a manual car and restore it properly.

    I would do first an oil change gearbox an make the chairs better and interior. Every time you drive you feel more happy specially you use it in the bad weather and do a little polish work at your door first.

    • @JAYREAD
      @JAYREAD  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks Jaap! Yes, the seats need work but I need the gearbox to work properly first. That is REALLY annoying!

    Definitely do the paint correction and rear bumper respray. Then you can knock around all you like, without hesitation.
    I’d skip the full respray (which will put you back into parking lot paranoia mode). But at least price out the transmission swap…
    Great to hear these detailers talk shop! Thanks, Jay!

    A good detail will help it a lot (as it did my ‘88) but these cars had single stage paint (no clear) originally… so it will be interesting to see how the detailing works out. My ‘88 had repairs so it was a mix of failing clear and original, got it looking shiny from 10 feet … lived with it while addressing the mechanicals which was so expensive I figured I might as well keep the car and paint it.

  • @vincekara9446
    @vincekara9446 8 месяцев назад

    I think you're making the right decision by getting the paint corrected. If you go to the respray route, it'll be very coslty and sit next to the MG.

    Lovely car . My aunt just to have one back when I was a teenager and brings awesome memories. Looking forward to seeing the results, I recently also have the 1998 996 done a deep buff type restoration and it looks a lot better, however those few rock chips still there and some nicks as well, but definitely an improvement.

    This is a very timely video, Jay, as I am thinking about a paint correction and ceramic on the 997 too. Can you divulge the cost range that they quoted you, or are you doing time and materials, or what? Thanks, -Tom.

      @@JAYREAD I have always driven Golf GTI’s, with an MGB & Fiat 124 spider thrown in for good measure. These were usually beat up. I had them running like clocks, good clocks. I kept the interiors nice though. All of these cars were a Blast to drive! My point is, make your 928 the way you dream it to be. You want a manual, have it installed. Btw, after I sold a GTI, I restored the MGB. I sold the MGB to restore the 124 spider. Selling this allowed me to buy New GTI

    That’s repaint the hardest question is who can delivering a quality paint job in the US. Probably the dealership is the best because they have the best equipments and standards. Other facilites are probably will doing a half ass job like they did on my Jaguar.

    • @JAYREAD
      @JAYREAD  8 месяцев назад +1

      I reckon it would be very expensive too. There are definitely places that can do a great job it it would be $20k plus.

      @@JAYREAD I would definietely asking for a quote from a dealership because i saw the differences. My ex manager has a vw and she had a pretty bad accident. Her car’s entire left side got hit and rubbed from the end to the front the dealership brought it back beautifully. Belive me i’m a pretty picky person when things comes up like that. When mine came out from a private shop i had to take it back to them because of the gaps and crappy paint job. I was told that shop was the best in the area by the way. A $20k quote from a private shop worth a question from a dealership it doesn’t cost you anything. The possibility to coming out better from this is there. It would even boosting your car’s value so you can swap to a manual.
