waut if merlin was born in ealdor he prolly couldnt read or write so did gaius teavh him?

His life in Ealdor was certainly implied to be tough, but he does read a little bit onscreen in the first few episodes. My guess is that his mother taught him.

the fact both Hunith and Merlin can read and write is absurd. we are talking late 5th/early 6th century and the literacy rate was probably less than 1% in sub-Roman Britain

@@embreis2257 that's very true and it very much impressed me at first when watching the show. I liked some fics trying to find reason for it,, traveling merchants and knights and whatnot teaching the children how to. Also in fics where they have Merlin learn things like how to ride a horse or do literally anything in a royal household that he wouldn't have learned in Ealdor. Some also have Gwen helping him!
