I'm genuinely impressed by how well everything looks on Switch. It's a vast improvement to how Frontiers looked, especially with the handheld resolution.

I have no problem with a consistent 30 fps on Switch. I know 60 is "better" but hands down I'd rather a consistent 30 fps as opposed to variable 60. Sometimes I wish switch had a fps capper like the steamdeck does
@@christianr.5868 Raising the framerate isn't always a good thing. Example: Ocarina of Time on N64 has always been 20fps. Pushing the game past that (30fps/60fps) makes combat trickier to play cause the animation was tied to 20fps and no more. Sonic Adventure is 30fps on Dreamcast. The Wii U version runs at 30, making some minigames harder to play due to no slowdown. It applies to emulation as well.
@aaron_aj_knight_95 Another example is the optional 60fps enhancement of Sonic Generations (the original) on Xbox Series X; 30fps on Xbox 360 bumped up to 60fps on Series X has numerous negative effects, including an infamous one where one of the cranes in Chemical Plant (Modern) Sends you to your death without fail, instead of sending you to a shortcut like it was intended. You might ask "Then why does the PC Port work as intended at 60fps?" Because the original PC Port of Base Generations was very well done, and very highly optimized. The fact that the System Requirements of SXS Gens are much higher makes me laugh, the original could run at least 30fps max on a potato, this new version has no excuse other than the Shadow content.
It's a testament to how good the Switch port is that I played this on PC with max settings and the only way I was initially able to tell that this is a Switch port is from the buttons. Of course, later, when I looked closer at the road I noticed that the texture isn't as pretty, but overall, it's a great port.

I'm getting this on Switch, because I've had the original on PC and wanted to play it in Handheld for years. Maybe I'll get it on PC later on as well so I can play the Shadow portion in a higher framerate.
Nice to have a little review for this, I always loved Generations and found myself enjoying the shadow campaign very much on my PC, maybe I'll pick it up on my switch once it goes on sale later on. Thanks for the review!
I'm glad the Switch version runs well. A different, more technically oriented review was saying it suffered in comparison, but what I was most concerned about was playability. Normally I'd use PS4 anyway, but there's a significant sale as of this comment (probably gone by the time you read this, it only has 6 hours left or so), and the idea of spending only $35... for the _Deluxe_ Edition... was too good to pass up if it worked.
One thing I was wondering if it got changed was that at the end of the credits of the original you hear a crowd going "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SONIC! WOOOO!". I was part of that crowd when it was recorded at Summer of Sonic 2011 to celebrate Sonic's 20th anniversary. As this is not an anniversary year I'm wondering if it got removed. Another is if it still has a playable version of Sonic 1.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY SONIC!” still plays at the end like before. Cool that you were part of the crowd! As far as I know Sonic 1 is not in there, like the Steam version of the original.
After buying this last week, playing through the first section, and defeating the first boss, this game has issues on Switch. Playing this on an external monitor, it's a blurry mess trying to see what is coming up, during 2D levels, and you're very much guessing. I've had whole levels break with shocking low-resolution textures pop out of nowhere and Sonic's module collapses into a mess. I had one city level in which the camera just broke. I couldn't see Sonic and kept trying to move ahead, and as I did (during one of those on-rail moments) the entire level was broken too. I was seeing views of the level I shouldn't be. The worst level was when asking Knuckles to find gold. I died somehow, and when reloading into an area, the yellow arrow didn't acknowledge that I had progressed that far and was telling me to go backwards through locations I couldn't get to. And the Eggman fight was just frustrating. Only one of the "bomb switches" actually would cause the arm to extend, and I had moments where the floating companion would say, "Go now, run up his arm..." but his arm wasn't extended. I'm going to stick at it, but I hope this is patched.
Thank you for your in-depth analysis of the Switch version. I can now wait my copy in peace. As a side personal note, if a game run "good enough" on Switch, I'm more than happy to buy this version, as there's always something "magical" with the Switch version. I'm still impressed we're playing such high-demanding games on what is basically a last decade handheld. And while there's now options elsewhere as far as high-performing handhelds go, nothing beat the charm of the Switch and still being able to actually put a cart inside the console and play it like it's still a good old Game Boy! Will be here till the end :)
This is pretty much why I want to grab the futuer Switch 2 and/or a steam deck when it comes out. Just something fun about playing modern games on the go.

Yeah. While I have issues with Ian Flynn’s writing (mainly the references and one-liner sandwiches), his characterisation is much better than the Flanderised amalgamations in the OG generations, like how Amy now has more character traits than soley “obsessed with Sonic”, it’s more along the lines of “Quirky fortune telling loving, flicky protecting, go-getting adventurer who also happens to have a crush on Sonic” which is way more interesting and has the nice quirk of being less objectifying toward women.

5:51 Lol they nerfed Rouge's polygons and censored Shadow's recap story by giving the G.U.N. soldier an INVISIBLE GUN. I mean come on, that wasn't censored in Shadow The Hedgehog. But regardless, I'm still gonna buy the game. I have my copy preordered already, so I'm picking it up later. today.
I'm guessing the censored gun was just to keep the age rating down to E10+, which initially seems confusing because the original Shadow The Hedgehog was also E10+ and had the gun, but that was almost 20 years ago and there's something I'd call "rating creep" that's been happening it seems, where stuff that used to be fine for a younger age rating slowly becomes considered too much and in need of a higher age rating. Mario Odyssey also demonstrates this, that game got E10+ instead of E for Everyone like other Mario games despite not being much more mature than them, and one of the reasons was apparently the semi-realistic military tanks you can capture and shoot with...even though Mario has had semi-realistic tanks since Super Mario Bros. 3. Tanks were fine before but apparently in 2017 now warranted an E10+ rating. So I'd moreso blame the ESRB's guidelines changing over time than the game itself.
Upon closer inspection, they simply increased the size of Rouge's heart breastplate. Her cleavage is still there, just not as noticeable. I guess Sonic Team didn't want to nerf her THAT much. Lol
They're based on different engines, Shadow's based on Frontiers so he can turn around in a circle while Boosting, Sonic is more like Unleashed so he feels stiffer (but honestly way less so in the remaster than the original) when running normally vs Boosting
The generations part runs in the original Hedgehog Engine 1 and they didn’t touch the physics while Shadow’s section runs in Hedgehog Engine 2 like Forces and Frontiers and thus has different physics. It’s not Forces physics as it feels better than Forces to play
Really appreciate the analysis Mark, honourable Switch effort this. Though for me personally Sonic needs to be 60fps so I’ll hold out for the inevitable Switch 2 version. And those ‘PC’ changes?? 🤔🤷🏻♂️
Think the Amy bio is just updating it to her frontiers version what with her new fortune gimmick being mentioned and all rather than just a morality issue.
Bought this for PC because I was worried about the quality of the Switch port after Frontiers, which in all fairness was awful. But will definitely pick up for Switch too, loved the original and having it portable at this standard is amazing
The frame pacing is pretty noticeable BUT the game looks and feels fantastic otherwise (low latency controls and great motion blur). I was expecting much, much worse, so I'm pleasantly surprised. Hopefully a patch can iron that out, but if not I'm not too upset.
30 fps for me feels pretty sluggish nowadays and the game is pretty much the same visuals as the original so kinda weird that the Switch can't handle 60 fps officially. Hopefully the next Switch will run it just fine at least 60 fps. I have the original Generations on Steam from some years ago and i wish the remaster was given for free or for a discount at least for the owners of the original but not the case sadly. I don't have a Switch but your reviews are great too!!
I had to wait for this review, to decide between Series X and Switch. They were not being transparent or forthcoming about the Switch downgrades 🙂. In this instance, I want the dazzling graphics performance I was seeing in the previews, so Im going Series X. Thanks.
Was waiting for this Review! I was worried when it was so quiet around the switch review... I dont want another mortal kombat 1 disaster. Great review!! Im buying it Tommrow
I am really enjoying this game so far and for the price I think it's worth it. However I must mention one thing I found really annoying. There are two ways to set the controls, the new way or legacy. I really wish they would just let us map it the way we want. Other than that I am VERY happy that this game is finally on Switch!
4:40 -6:00 mark “Oh know they destroyed the game it sucks now and completely unplayable!!!” Seriously? People are upset about those minor change (although I do get the point that they were unnecessary) but those changes don’t affect the game itself. It’s not like they completely cut the scenes or characters, levels or anything. None of those changes “ruin” the game. I will admit the hand on Amy’s face being changed kinda annoys me cause I always always saw that scene to just be part of the cartoon humor with sonic and amy. It’s not the end of the world though. I get being annoyed by changes like that or censorship in general with games but as long as the changes don’t affect the actually gameplay and story I tend to just roll my eyes at things like that. Idk maybe that’s just me.
i actually feel sega did a really great job with Rouge’s new design. Of course i love the previous one more than the latter but it makes me feel she is just like the same old Rouge in the game i was playing since childhood.
I want this, I hope they do Sonic Unleashed / 06 new ports. Didn’t get to play them back in the day, and they are some of the sonic games I can’t get on steam :(
the cutscenes slowed down for the sonic generations part and for the shadow gens part when you start boosting it gest so blurry and distorted that it becomes very hard to see , i was hoping this game would come out patch free , but the game needs to patched
Well here the reason for it not being 60fps. The game was developed with PS5 in mind first. So the version we got is scalded down to Switch. If it was developed with Switch First them pushed up it would be better
@@Cilverkid456that’s not even true. The game came out on literally every console. It wasn’t developed with PS5 in mind when the original Gens section still uses the original assets and lighting. Even the Shadow section doesn’t look too different from Forces and Frontiers lighting wise
@@Cilverkid456 This is false. Like, blatantly. This game was not developed with any specific console in mind. From the start we've been told the game was developed to bring the original gens up to the newer generations including the One, the PS4, and Switch. Had the game been developed for just the newest gen we'd be getting a far less palatable experience.
Looks decent, might pick it up when it's a bit cheaper. The changes wouldn't impact my enjoyment as I never played the original so I won't even notice. I don't agree with them changing it, but it's not something that will affect me personally.
Considering the original game didn’t get that rating nor did any of the previous games that had darker stories in the 2000s didn’t I doubt it’s for ratings reasons. It’s becuase Ian Flynn wanted to change stuff. Although only the English script was changed as the Japanese script is identical to the original release
Great performance for the Switch but I think this fast guys need 60 fps for me to fully enjoy so will get the PC version. Oh lol just arrived at the changes.... Like why?! I know it is not important but damn
@@zarch420 Sonic Heroes was 60fps on my GameCube so they didn’t choose 30fps as the default it just depends on the hardware, and like I said 60fps would’ve have made them play much better given the nature of the gameplay
Not only the best 3D Sonic game (maybe ever?) but actually performs well across platforms. Feels like Sega made a wish on the Dragon Balls. Also, they're dropping Amy's "claims to be his girlfriend" because they're moving towards them actually being a couple and not a stalker, so it would be weird to leave it in.
@SleepyJohannes starwars outlaws a great game sold a million and is considered a failure unfortunately. But the 5 to 6 reviews of dragon age that all had the same 'return to form' line put in there (and some people think they were paid off to do that, go figure!) Should help it sell more. Plus, we need more lecturing on how to address the lgbtq gods!
I played probably the first sonic on whatever platform that came out on, at a time when only a few games came out each year. Not really my sort of game but I’ll tickle your buttons anyway - see ya!
idk why, i liked the original sonic games on the mega drive but all the 3d ones i dont really like. they feel too much like they are on rails. half of the time it feels like the game is playing itself you just have to press a few buttons like a fmv game. when i last played the original sonic on the mega drive it kinda felt like the sonic formula never really worked. yes he is fast but half of the time you run into something you cant see because sonic runs so fast.
Came here because Metacritic only had one review for the Switch version and only a bunch of 10's on the user side. And for those who don't trust Metacritic when it comes to quality: I only use it to check for "bad things" that both critics and users can both agree about, namely how buggy or grindy a game would be.

This is the exact same price it launched at in 2011, with more content.
but yeah if you look up the game code sites you could probably get it for ~$43
Or you could wait for a sale because sega games go on sale quickly
It's currently $39.99 on Woot!
Lol
We actually got a decent Sonic port on Switch? I'm surprised
Love these guys' reviews. Way more thorough than the bigger companies.
Did anyone else notice how Sonic has his normal gens physics but Shadow has Forces physics that bothered me so much
They're based on different engines, Shadow's based on Frontiers so he can turn around in a circle while Boosting, Sonic is more like Unleashed so he feels stiffer (but honestly way less so in the remaster than the original) when running normally vs Boosting
The generations part runs in the original Hedgehog Engine 1 and they didn’t touch the physics while Shadow’s section runs in Hedgehog Engine 2 like Forces and Frontiers and thus has different physics. It’s not Forces physics as it feels better than Forces to play
The changes aren't that big of a deal, but it is weird that they spent time and effort to censor things that aren't a big deal.
Haven’t watched the whole vid yet but I’ve been waiting for this!
Really appreciate the analysis Mark, honourable Switch effort this. Though for me personally Sonic needs to be 60fps so I’ll hold out for the inevitable Switch 2 version. And those ‘PC’ changes?? 🤔🤷🏻♂️
What is that translucent joycon? Are they good/reliable? Where can i buy them?
Been waiting for this, thanks!
Think the Amy bio is just updating it to her frontiers version what with her new fortune gimmick being mentioned and all rather than just a morality issue.
actually, back to the SA2 manual backstory (if you read that) and the mystery train game last year. It's not frontiers.
Bought this for PC because I was worried about the quality of the Switch port after Frontiers, which in all fairness was awful. But will definitely pick up for Switch too, loved the original and having it portable at this standard is amazing
Very informative! Thank you
The frame pacing is pretty noticeable BUT the game looks and feels fantastic otherwise (low latency controls and great motion blur). I was expecting much, much worse, so I'm pleasantly surprised. Hopefully a patch can iron that out, but if not I'm not too upset.
To the wishlist it goes!
Is the game (or games If you count both campaigns as two separate games) complete in the cartridge or does it require a download of any kind?
30 fps for me feels pretty sluggish nowadays and the game is pretty much the same visuals as the original so kinda weird that the Switch can't handle 60 fps officially. Hopefully the next Switch will run it just fine at least 60 fps. I have the original Generations on Steam from some years ago and i wish the remaster was given for free or for a discount at least for the owners of the original but not the case sadly. I don't have a Switch but your reviews are great too!!
Shadow is the big reason why I wanna get this game 😊
I'd wish they'd do a remaster of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
1:09 Consistent? There's literally a frame pacing problem there. Look at the spikes
How is the nitro deck plus?
Blimey. I was expecting Sonic Frontiers level of blurriness. Looks like a good port. Will stick with the current gen version though.
I had to wait for this review, to decide between Series X and Switch. They were not being transparent or forthcoming about the Switch downgrades 🙂.
In this instance, I want the dazzling graphics performance I was seeing in the previews, so Im going Series X. Thanks.
When i boost it the screen looks weird and serf 😢
Those are definitely FSR artifacts. I'll be doing some upscaling.
Was waiting for this Review! I was worried when it was so quiet around the switch review... I dont want another mortal kombat 1 disaster. Great review!! Im buying it Tommrow
Game aint bad for a switch port n i didnt even try it yet lol. Big ups SwitchUp! 💪
Got this on PS4 cause I was worried by the Switch. I’m surprised how good the Switch does handle.
what's the ps4 performance? 60fps?
I am really enjoying this game so far and for the price I think it's worth it. However I must mention one thing I found really annoying. There are two ways to set the controls, the new way or legacy. I really wish they would just let us map it the way we want. Other than that I am VERY happy that this game is finally on Switch!
4:40 -6:00 mark
“Oh know they destroyed the game it sucks now and completely unplayable!!!”
Seriously?
Yeah I agree I play these games for fun not for any of that stuff. Mark
Uh, no since that section was made for her wings, now they clip through the clothes.
I want this, I hope they do Sonic Unleashed / 06 new ports. Didn’t get to play them back in the day, and they are some of the sonic games I can’t get on steam :(
looks like an excellent port!
the cutscenes slowed down for the sonic generations part and for the shadow gens part when you start boosting it gest so blurry and distorted that it becomes very hard to see , i was hoping this game would come out patch free , but the game needs to patched
I hope it fet patched soon😢
@@dionnecozier8443 me too, ive sent a tweet with the videos on the sonicxshadow gens X account. I hope they'll see.
@@dionnecozier8443 also so far the shadow gens part i like it a lot.
Well, it's still a PS3 game so it should at least be able to run at 30 fps
For sure but I never hold my breath with Switch releases haha. Mark
Yes a good sonic game 😂😂😂 how long has it been??? Maybe a decent 3D one soon 😢
My number one go to switch channel ❤ thank you for your efforts
plays better than yakuza kiwami
I wish i was clever enough to understand all the technical terms you use haha. Looks good though! still torn on whether to go PS5 or Switch...
Looks decent, might pick it up when it's a bit cheaper. The changes wouldn't impact my enjoyment as I never played the original so I won't even notice. I don't agree with them changing it, but it's not something that will affect me personally.
Is this game two player i'd love to play with my dad
Only thing thats a negative for me is them not including the 3DS exclusive stages and bosses.
I bought the switch version and I love it, but I wish I had bought the ps5 or pc version.
I don't think it is about offending new audience, but to ensure they don't get PEGI12 that can affect their sales.
Considering the original game didn’t get that rating nor did any of the previous games that had darker stories in the 2000s didn’t I doubt it’s for ratings reasons. It’s becuase Ian Flynn wanted to change stuff. Although only the English script was changed as the Japanese script is identical to the original release
Does it have the casino pinball games from sonic adventure? I read somewhere...
Great performance for the Switch but I think this fast guys need 60 fps for me to fully enjoy so will get the PC version.
Oh lol just arrived at the changes.... Like why?! I know it is not important but damn
I got the PS5 version instead. Pretty excited 😊😊😊
Great review 🎮
Fast paced games need at least 60fps and Sonic games are the epitome of that
Most 3d sonic games run at 30fps 💀💀💀 both adventure games, sonic hero’s, shadow the hedgehog, sonic 06, sonic unleashed, sonic generations and etc
@@zarch420 Sonic Heroes was 60fps on my GameCube so they didn’t choose 30fps as the default it just depends on the hardware, and like I said 60fps would’ve have made them play much better given the nature of the gameplay
Alright Sakurai, Shadow had the perfect comeback with this game. There's no reason why he shouldn't make the character roster in the next Smash Bros.
Sakurai is done with smash
@Matanumi I have a house to sell you if you believe that.
Looks like a good game, may have to get this I think
There a 60 fps cheat yet?
Yes and you don’t need to overclock
I went with the Xbox version, since I had the original on 360. But I’m glad the Switch version turned out well.
All the changes were made for modern audiences. The ones that don't exist!
Huh. I thought I wasn’t gonna be able to play this game! I mean, I have a PS5, but it’s a giant paperweight at this point. Still, neat!
I can't wait to experience my new neutrally flavoured slop! Thanks!
Thanks for the review
Came here because Metacritic only had one review for the Switch version and only a bunch of 10's on the user side.
And for those who don't trust Metacritic when it comes to quality: I only use it to check for "bad things" that both critics and users can both agree about, namely how buggy or grindy a game would be.
You’d think I would hit 60fps since generations is console generations old.
Don't underestimate how outdated the switch is
The Switch isn’t that much more powerful than a 360/ps3 what did you expect?
Not for me but thanks for the review!
the fact u caN GET IT FOR 30 ON BLACK FRIDAY IS CRAZY
