    Batik Air used to be an actual full service with hot meal service on 1 hr domestic flights. Ever since the pandemic they downgraded quite badly now only serving bread and water. The IFE is also hit or miss. Sometimes it works sometimes it don't.

    Speaking of the runway issue in Jakarta, it was quite bad back then. GA used to operate flights to Europe but had to stop at Singapore. Today the runway has been mostly upgraded but the issue still exist, currently GA operate flights to Amsterdam non stop but the flight is not that full. There’s also examples of the runway issue taking an effect on European Carriers serving Indonesia. Back in 2011, Lufthansa launched flights from Frankfurt to Jakarta via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur using either the A340 or the 747. Air Framce operates their Triple 7 via Singapore back then and KLM operating via Kuala Lumpur. So yeah the runway issue is really a big issue here, but the goverment just loves to do corruption and delay everything. So yeah..

    I agree that that's not really full service. I recently flew KLM from SIN to DPS, and with SIA from SGN to SIN to CGK. On all three of those sectors, I selected the window seat I wanted, and was served a full hot meal. That's full service.

    That rating you spoke about, GA flew all their routes to Europe via Singapore. Back in the day, it was not uncommon in the evenings to see several GA 747-200s parked in Changi on their way to Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich. I'm pretty sure they made one more stop in Dhahran as well then. I've personally flown this sector with Batik in business. So I got to experience the full works of lounge access, priority boarding, meal was decent as well.

    I flew Batik domestic recently because I have no other choices, and when my friend mentioned that "Batik is a full service" I was really really shocked like, "THAT WAS FULL SERVICE??? Jeez I wonder what budget looks like LOL" 🤣🤣🤣 I also got the the same snack as you, and the same ticket price (or slightly more expensive despite it's a local route) 😩. Tho I'm glad the flight attendances were nice and super helpful.

    Have tried Batik air (back when it was still called malindo air) for Singapore to India via KL, business class fares were close to Indigo economy. their reliability is hit and miss, frequent delays but if you dont mind that, is pretty value for money for a budget business class experience, comparable to scoot.

    Batik air has been one of those airlines that I always wanted to try, but always miss due to timing and other stuff. Also technically batik is a "hybrid" airline anyway - they have pushed that messaging since week 1 I think.

    • @tfft
      @tfft  2 месяца назад +1

      I agree they are a hybrid, but everything I've ever read about them has pointed to them (and formerly Malindo) as being a full service carrier. To my knowledge Lion Group only changed the tune on this a short while ago when they changed the in flight food offerings.

    Kemayoran Airport is not the first commercial airport in Dutch East Indies, let alone Jakarta (or when it was called Batavia). Halim Perdanakusuma Airport is actually the first commercial airport in Batavia when it was opened in 1924, then it was called Vliegveld Tjililitan after the area where it was located. Commercial traffic moved to Kemayoran in 1940, and interestingly the international traffic moved back to Halim in 1974 when Kemayoran was deemed to small.
    Tjililitan Airport for some time was the terminus of the world's longest flight, Amsterdam to Batavia, before Qantas and Imperial Airways started the London to Australia flight.

    Yeah, I consider Batik a hybrid carrier more than anything, but I guess that’s what’s price sensitive country that needs a ton of air service, like Indonesia, needs. They don’t need and probably can’t afford Garuda all the time, so a hybrid airline that meets in the middle is great. Those seats at least looked a hell much nicer than Super Air Jet. Also, that check-in agent that discouraged you from upgrading, shows they are smart in ensuring you become a repeat customer… 😂

    I've flown Batik from Perth to Bali and back last year. They're actually not bad. On-time performance is good, and pretty good seats.
    Only thing is that some aircraft don't have IFE.
    Apparantly this is due to the IFE manufacturer going out of business, but then getting a new one around 2018, but not bothering to retrofit their older aircraft, but their oldest aircraft do have it.
    I flew to with PK-LUG which didn't have IFE, just a moveable placeholder, and flew back with PK-LUZ, which did. But tbh they barely had anything in them anyway. Basically a roll of the dice whether you have it or not.
    Also they only had buy on board available. Not even water for free.
    And cash only as well. Ordered a coke and it was warm. Tasted disgusting.
    Overall it was good-ish. Definitely inconsistent in terms of IFE, and not even accepting card? What year is it. But otherwise good flights.
    They're definitely not 'full service', but they're the closest you're gonna get for PER-DPS. Only carrier to offer business class as well.
    Until Garuda/Qantas/VA offer flights to/from Bali from Perth (which I expect they won't do anytime soon), they're your best bet if you want a 'no frills' experience.

    I'm glad you had a reasonable experience although yes the lack of seat selection is really annoying. We recently flew their ex Malindo Air service from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur in Business Class. It was going really well until just before landing I realised there had been no food or meal service.
    When I asked the answer was confusing and when I emailed to ask what happened they told me that they had been round every passenger and I had declined food and drink 😐
    Good video 👍

    Their service has declined in the past year. They used to be a full-service airline, but now they seem closer to a hybrid between full service and low cost. When I flew with them in 2023 to Medan, they only served us bread and nothing else. Since then, we haven't flown with them again and have chosen Garuda instead.
    In contrast, we flew to Bali with Garuda in June and they provided a hot meal on both of our flights. We're interested in trying TransNusa, though. I've seen videos about them, and they seem to be improving steadily, potentially competing with Garuda in the future.

    Had no idea about the runway rating system and that the bad situation at CGK was one of the reasons that there are not more longhaul flights

  • @emilhilmy7740
    @emilhilmy7740 2 месяца назад +4

    Lack long haul route is more due to Indonesian Airlines focus more on Domestic and regional routes. Garuda try to expand long haul routes in 90's or even last decade. Not really work out. Lion Group has no intention so far to move more then regional routes.
    You can't become hub for long haul destinations if your own airliners did not want to do it. Dubai has Emirates, Singapore has SIA, Istanbul has Turkish Airlines, and Doha has Qatar Airlines.
    You need your own domestic airlines to invest on long haul to bring the demand volume, if not no point for the Airports invest on Long Haul infrastructures.
    Direct routes to Euro zone and North America is not simply big enough (from Indonesian domestic demands) relative to Regional Asian-Australian routes.
    Yes there're thousands of Indonesian that goes to Europe and North America but the volume is small compare to those Indonesian that goes to Asia-Australian routes. Which's why Garuda prefere to do code sharing with Turkish, Emirates or SIA for routes to Europe and North America.

    • @bramantios5797
      @bramantios5797 2 месяца назад +3

      No, it is the issue due the runway.
      Still remember when Garuda tried to serve route Jakarta - London. At that last minute, they have realized that Soekarno Hatta' runway is not strong enough to hold full weight of Garuda' plane served Jakarta to London
      So, this reason why Garuda still opened route Jakarta London but make little adjustment with transit in Amsterdam. As runway cant handle full fuel to make journey Jakarta London.

    • @tfft
      @tfft  2 месяца назад

      Yeah, Garuda has flown to Europe more ways I can count to get around the runway restrictions.

    • @emilhilmy7740
      @emilhilmy7740 2 месяца назад +2

      Runways restrictions is part reflection of lack long haul demands for direct routes to Europe and North America. Even to Amsterdam only been done by Garuda, while KLM doing it with stop over in KL.
      For Airport it is chicken and egg dilemma. They don't want to invest on better runway grade if there's no enough demand for the flight routes that deemed justified the investment.
      Jakarta to London direct routes has been taken. However the load is not big enough, that Garuda then decide to add Singapore stop over. Thus it is still shown the runway can do London direct routes, even with some restrictions. Then again the airport then will not going to invest more if they don't see enough demands for longer direct routes from Jakarta.
      So it is in the end Chicken and Egg dilemma stories. It is Investment justification on there.

      @@tfft Garuda Indonesia as late as October 2019 managed to operate 777 flights from Jakarta to London nonstop , and considering it can take planes as far flung from Istanbul with Turkish A350s, Jakarta seems capable for those ultra long haul arrivals. It's just that not a whole lot of airlines bother flying to CGK when there's more potential in nearby SIN, not to mention the only airline that could realistically operate said flights would be Garuda, an airline that is still trying to recover (and failing) from their losses.

Lion air group mendominasi jadwal Bandara Bali. Nice content but I have to say I disagree with your information about Indonesian traveling abroad mostly prefer connecting flight, long haul flight demand in Indonesia is very low, Air France and Lufthansa fly here but they ended up terminating the route because of the load factor.
    Those folks in Singapore Airlines may argue about that but statistics make the picture more clear, you will hardly meet Indonesian in Europe, the American continent, Africa, Indonesian diaspora mostly found in neighboring ASEAN countries, Hongkong, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, also some Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi, UAE, Qatar, Egypt, they can also commonly found in Australia, you can also see a big Indonesian community in The Netherlands, but outside of these countries I mentioned, you will hardly find Indonesian community, I was living in Italy for 3 months and I only met Indonesian at the embassy in Rome. So yeah, the demographic of Indonesian diaspora really explained why the demand for long haul flight from Jakarta is utterly low.

      Similar to PH, foreign carriers often have trouble operating to Indonesia bc of VFF style yield much more so than load factor. They could fill the planes quite easily if they wanted to- but likely not for the revenue they’re looking for.

      @@tfft I also need to add a point that the reason why terminal 4 hasn't started yet is because the airport hasn't reached its capacity, at the moment you fly out of there, 3 sub terminals are actually close, in terminal 1, only terminal 1A and in terminal 2, only 2E and 2F operating in which terminal 2F now serving international LCC flight. This is also somehow what makes Batik Air doesn't feel like a full service is because they fly out of Terminal 2 instead of 3.
      So with terminals 1B, 1C and 2D are closed now for refurbishment with no exact deadline, it's obvious the airport doesn't need a new terminal.
