Sad to watch. Everything associated with Red Hat is drowning in abusive corporate nonsense that does not come with any value for customers whatsoever.
A lot of people that switched to Linux did so to get away from this crap!
I was using fedora. Had no idea the telemetry was that extensive/invasive. I know it's opt in and they are just discussing the matter, but the fact they're even considering it has destroyed my trust in them.
I've been using RH/Fedora since Red Hat 5. Collecting this set of data will cause me to reformat with something else.
I hope this data collection "disease" doesn't spread any further in Linux, otherwise I could be using an abacus real soon.
Wait until the AI will come in. Then, it is party time.
@@laylasmart Deepin is already implementing AI into their DE from what i saw this week, just a matter of time lol
Time to jump ship again I guess 😂
Fedora fanboys will unironically tell you with a straight face this is a good thing because it will allow them to improve the product (followed by some miserable "Every thing has telemetry, you can escape it anyways. Be smart like me and don't even bother trying to escape it." crab bucket reaction). I can't think of a single service that improved for its users by implementing telemetry. Fedora fanboys are the Windows fanboys of the Linux world.
Did M$ just invest in Fedora?
Fedora is related to Red Hat. Red Hat is owned by IBM. IBM does the same crap as M$.
@@lgajai I knew Fedora came about when Red Hat went commercial decades ago but not how close they were still connected. But had no idea IBM was involved. That certainly explains it.
Sounds like someone in management asked developers "what data do you need to target the biggest issues first, and what data do you you need to stop supporting unused features.". Like all things, it is just a tool. However, once a company starts looking at tools to reduce costs, once done the next step is to determine how to use that'll to generate revenue (ie, sell data).
My jaded worldview? There are no long term successful companies that are ethical - because if an ethical business is thriving for years, an unethical business will use unethical practices to either buy it out out or destroy it.
What is saddening is how more and more Linus distro companies are going down this inevitable path - but only because it confirms this greed is a general pattern that happens to every segment of human endeavor.
I've mainly used Fedora for the majority of the time I've been a linux user but I'm starting to think that with the release of Debian 13 I will be permanently switching over to that as my daily driver regardless of if this passes or not. The very fact that they are proposing this is disappointing to a huge degree.
Go watch the Linux experiment he does a good job explaining what they'll be looking at in ways of privacy.
@@michealrosen The Linux Experiment is someone who gets offended when you use the GNU/Linux interjection copypasta.
Very disappointing can't think of any other distribution that has the release cadence of packages that I want so I will probably just stick with it for the time being; so long as it does not become opt out.
I just switched over to Nobara, which is Fedora based. Would this data collection BS affect Nobara?
open source is going to the dogs....
Who is the glowie who proposed this terrrible fedora idea
screw fedora.. yu said is windows linux...
Data collection will be off by default. You have to enable it if you want to. Same as debian.
@@kavishgour3267 it doesn't matter, they still plan to collect it
An OpenSSH vulnerability that doesn't affect OpenBSD. Huh.🤔 I guess OpenSSH would be more rigorously tested on OpenBSD than elsewhere.
It is kind of paradoxical that using Windows one has the ability to block every(?) spying part of the system from connecting to the Internet by using application firewall. In Linux this area of development looks kind of neglected.
This is a topic that is never going to satisfy some people specially the extremist, but at least for me as a fedora user I do not care. It is opt in and that alone is enough to ignore it if you really care about this topic.
But also fedora is not microsoft, fedora is not in the business of selling data they are a community driven distro. They are sponsored by red hat yes but they are not owned by them, they have been transparent in how they are governed.
And even red hat is not microsoft their bullshit affects sever it people not regular desktop fedora users. Both fedora and red have made big contributions to the linux ecosystem.
