This ultra-rare 1999 Chevy 2500 4x4 with a 6.5L Detroit Diesel was sent to an auto insurance auction and written off as a total loss. But when we found it, we knew there had to be more to the story. A hurricane left it in rough shape, and insurance paid out $34,000 to call it done-but is it really beyond saving?
In this video, we break down the damage, investigate the engine, and see if this one-of-a-kind diesel truck has any life left. Can we bring it back, or is it too far gone? Let’s find out.

I own 99 gmc crew cab short bed 4×4 6.5 with 115k on it and I owned it since 2004 that truck you have is only like the 5th one I have seen in all my years of owning one
Ya so it is really rare then for sure. Good to know. So I guess your on the side of keeping it over the 6blow? Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content
I’ve seen a ton of them around. A lot of them were scrapped, and a lot of them are sitting in the weeds rotting away. They’re great trucks if you don’t treat them as if they were powered by a 454.
$34K! that adjuster is about to loose his job!
ya BROTHER something aint right on that one for sure brother. It is super rare classic for sure. He did have it insured for up to 35k. Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content
Lol right! I got mine for 9k.
No freaking wonder everyone’s insurance is skyrocketing
I called b.s. id have to see the paperwork.
Autobody guy and mechanic of 35 year I love rare cars and trucks this one is very special I heard about this truck 10 years ago just by looking shit up and knew this truck was special and made for someone at dealership but never took ownership of it and it sold on the lot in 99
Wait a second your talking about our specific truck? Would love to connect with you to get the full story could you email us jmrrebuilders@gmail.com. thanks brother for comment and support
My dad had a 6.5 turbo, great truck made it to 355k miles before the trans quit and he got rid of it. Ran like a sowing machine

My childhood friend has one of these still rolling and is in mint condition. Lots of miles but he drives it everyday. He's a freak of nature. My Uncle has a dually 05 3500 and some fool hit his bed and his insurance told him it was worth 35k. He's got about 125k miles. They gave him a lot to fix the bed. He got a spare bed had a friend paint it. Making out like a bandit.
Man that's super cool brother. Glad it worked out for him. Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content
The 6.5 get a bad rap but they aren’t that horrible. The biggest thing is to move the pmd somewhere cooler

I love this truck with the RIMS on it !!!! Its just amazing .
Ya they are ford rims we will put them on our f250 powerstroke. Have you seen that video?
I’ve had four or five of them. I live here in Missouri and they used to be all over the place. I still know of two or three of them. Not that rare in 99 the railroad had tons of them they are getting rare because a lot of them got crushed but definitely a keeper
I’ve seen 1 in my life. My uncle had one just like this in West Virginia. It was identical an same year. I remember being 16 an my dad borrowed the truck to go get a new big bear 400 from a Yamaha shop. I’ll never forget that day sitting in the back set looking at my new 4wheeler. Lol I seen that truck an you spark that memory. I do paint an body for a living now but that was the only one. I still have that big bear today from that strait pipe 6.5 towed home. I forgot he straight piped it brand new.

thats alot of coin
I had a rare Chevy Suburban diesel that I totaled when a kid ran a stop sign.
His insurance tried to pay me a pitiful amount..
I work with claims everyday in my job , and by law , they have to make you "whole".
So I told them to "find one" similar in options & miles..
After 3 months , they finally settled the claim...
I practically stole it when I bought it ..
I was doing auto hail repair on a huge farm in Iowa .
The guy had a fleet of high end chevy trucks , but I noticed the "burb" in the corner...
It also had hail damage ..
The insurance totalled it , and the guy bought it back...
He sold it to me for a little over what he bought it back for..
I fixed it , had it inspected , & the title was re'issued as a clean title .
Man that is super cool and sucks at the same time. Thanks for comment and support.
Never seen a Chevy with a Detroit factory installed. I love Detroits.

The short bed definitely makes it rarer since most of them are long beds. Picked up a diesel 99 k3500 crew cab single rear wheel recently myself but it has a long bed.
My long bed has almost the same interior. She just has the 60/40 powered bench vs tbe buckets but is leather and the same color. Exterior is white, at least for now.
Haven't seen a crew cab short bed diesel in person, but I've seen a couple online, mostly in the Facebook groups for the engine.
Man that's super cool and you are right bout rare of it. Thanks for comment and support brother. Check out our other content
@@JMRRebuilders will definitely check out your other content. Personally I love the 6.2/6.5 diesel and have a few other ones myself, like a 82 k5 with a turbo 6.5 in place of the old 6.2 and 95 k2500 Burb. Properly set up these engines can get great fuel mileage while still being able to work, the biggest thing is letting them breathe better since from the factory both the intake and exhaust was highly restrictive.
I'm actually starting a RUclips channel myself with a buddy of mine and we'll probably be filming 6.2/6.5 diesel content.
That's awesome man well good luck let us know if you need any help.
@JMRRebuilders will do.
The stock turbos were barely capable of making 15psi of boost. The biggest upgrade you can do that's pretty easy and simple is taking an hx35 from a secound gen dodge 12v and swaping it into the old Detroit. It ain't a direct swap easy bolt on. It's takes some tinkering but the hx35 will put some breath into it for sure, plus it'll have a waste gate. But the weakest link is gonna be the need gaskets. Those 6.5's didn't have enough head bolts per cylinder head to keep the head gaskets in them! A set of ARP head studs wouldn't be a bad idea! Especially if you gotta put a set of head gaskets in it at some point!
A nice set of ARP 625's or ARP 2000's will ensure the head gaskets don't get burned up and the head lifted from the increased boost and cylinder pressures the hx35 will create.
Ha! Google 6.5l Detroit diesel common issues and the first page that pops up says 'Poor Fuel Economy:
Compared to newer diesel engines, the 6.5L is considered underpowered and has relatively poor fuel economy'.
Ouch. Heh. That's about right tho. They weren't a power house motor. It was poorly designed, electronically controlled injection pump, while everything else dodge had already done was all mechanical. In '99 dodge and Cummins were doing the vp44 injection pump, which wa also an electronically controlled mechanical injection pump. No where near as awesome as the indestructible and reliable p1700 pumps or the ultra reliable Bosch be rotary pumps that were on the first gen 12v Cummins non-intercooled and intercooled motors. Dodge and Cummins owned the light duty pickup diesel market all thru the 90's and into the 2000's and really all the way up to 2006 which the last year of the 5.9l Cummins 24v common rail injection system, then switching to the the emissions plagued 6.7l common rail diesels. Emissions was the end of reliable simple mechanically ran diesel engines that got good fuel milage and were reliable and easy to work on. Once emissions plagued everything with egr, dpf, def fluid, and the coolers and sensors that monitor sensors it all turned to garbage! The good thing about that old 6.5l is it don't have any emissions, while it isn't emissions exempt, it's not old
Enough. Anything pre '97 would be diesel
Emissions exempt and not even require a cat. I'm sure it being a '99 would had at least a diesel cat. But thing else, alltho it could have had an egr, especially if it was a 'made for California' version.the crackdown on diesel emissions had made these older dinosaur diesel pickups worth a lot more. A new diesel truck is $80K+ plus, upwards of $100k, that's retarded. It's stupid to spend that much on a unreliable diesel truck that in 20 years no one's going to know how to work on and it's going to be broke down on the side of the road somewhere or parked behind a barn and not run because of some $20 emissions sensor, and no one's going to know how to work on it or have the scan tool to be able to talk to the computer modules in it.
This is why I'll keep my ultra reliable '02 24v HO 6 speed dodge Cummins truck! Manual trans all the way! All mechanical simple diesel motor. Cummins really did own the market back in the '90s and 00's. That had it locked down with the 12v and 24v.
I've had a couple buddies that have swaped 12v Cummins motors into these OBS Chevy's body style trucks. Literally only one wire runs the motor. There's no ecu, pcm, no muddles, no ficm or tipm, especially if your running a manual 5 or 6 speed lol.
Do all 8 of the injectors, upgrade the turbo to a hx35w, the w is for waste gate. And do a set of head studs! Put a nice FASS 100gph water/ fuel separator lift pump system on it. It's important to keep that electronically controlled standadyne injection pump supplied with lots and lots of clean cool fuel, so a fass fuel system in imperative! The stock oe in tank fuel lift pumps were garbage, the standadyne injection cannot suck fuel from the tank, and it puts a lot of strain on them, a fass 100gph fuel system will supply all the fuel it needs and will save the injectors! Do all that and you'll have a good running truck, I'd replace all 8 glow plugs to! And make sure the glow plug relay is good and works! They are not a very good cold starting diesel engine, not like a 12/24v Cummins that'll start when it's -20 out here in Colorado! You don't want an ether baby!
...and who ever said it must be a good motor if they used it in the GM hummers, is wrong! There still junk! The hummer 6.5's are a little different, they are a higher Hp version, have a hotter tune, bigger injectors, put a set of hummer 6.5l injectors in that tru k, they are little. Bigger! But the hummer us military versions of the 6.5 Detroit diesel were a little different, they had a bigger cooling system, heavy duty coolers and everything different tuning and higher injectors. Doing an hx35w from a 12v/24v Cummins will really wake it up!
Yeah, there’s definitely a lot that can be done to improve these trucks, and some upgrades can really make a difference. Every platform has its strengths and weaknesses, and it all comes down to what works best for the build. Appreciate the insight!
Man y’all should try to get some more 90s fords I love watching y’all get them

I’m a big obs guy, I’ve got a 97 black long bed reg cab and I love it! They are great trucks and this is a rare spec. You should keep it as a work truck
So that a vote for the 6.5 and sell the 6.0? Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content
It sounds like it’s got a knock. If the guy said it had a bad injector then it’s probably stuck open and causing that fuel knock. I had the same problem with one of mine on my 6.2 Detroit.
Man I hope that's why good point. We gotta find that out for sure. Apparently the audience wants to keep the 6.5. Guessing your in the 6.5 club and sell the 6blow? Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content
@@JMRRebuilders Yep, definitely think you should keep the 6.5. You don’t see too many around.
In methitoba canada I've seen 1 i might have seen 2 but not 100 percent sure I can't remember if that one was originally a 6.5
Ya brother that's super cool. People keep saying it ain't rare they don't know how rare they are. Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content
I’d keep the 6.5 very cool truck!
Ya think that is the plan the chevy won the vote brother. Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content.
Are you sure it’s a 99??
Since 98 was the last year for the OBS.
99, got the new body style trucks.
Since the damage isn’t that bad, I’m surprised the owner didn’t buy it back from the insurance and fix it.
I wonder if it’s a custom build or special order, since most short bed truck didn’t come with a diesel.
Ya from what we understand it was a custom order and yest it's Def a 99. Thanks for comment and suppor. Check out our other content
I had a 2000 srw 3500 still a obs body style
Let’s go. You have the first quad cab Chevy. Very nice can’t wait to see what you guys do with it
Heck yeah brother lets go. She is sweet for sure brother. Thanks for comment and support.
@@JMRRebuilders you guys really put the fun back into let’s see if we can get it running or let’s see what it takes to make it work
Heck yeah man love it.
I have to replace 4 injectors on my 6.0 if you take a box end wrench and touch the back of your alternator is, should be magnetized lightly
Good to know brother that's awesome good point. Thanks for comment and support.
Had 1 6.2,,,, and 2 ,6.5 deisels 97 and 99 great on fuel
That's super cool. Guessing you love them. Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content
I got my short bed 4 door cab 2007 f250 4x4 diesel with a clean title for 1500 bucks but being a 6.0 I may have paid too much.
Sounds like a killer deal brother. Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content
These kinda videos make me miss my 1997 f350 4x4 crewcab longbed no rust, it was about to hit 400k , mine had that same maroon interior. . I paid 9k for my f350 in 2014 . It seems like it has become like a clasic vehicle ford mustang , DEBOSS GARAGE BUILT A 1996 F350 THAT IS IDENTICAL TO MINE EXCEPT THEY HAD GREY INTERIOR . I WILL ALWAYS REGRET SELLING THAT TRUCK
ya that stinks man, but it happens. Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content.
I had a 92 c2500 with 6.5td. Sold it in 2021. First year of 6.5 was 92. They have made them for a long time for marine and government use. I didn’t pay 15k for my duramax and I wouldn’t pay that for a 6.5 ever
Good to know your not our target audience for sale. Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content
@ 🤔
I have owned 5 crew cab short bed chevy trucks. I currently own a crew cab short bed dually.
Let's go brother. That's awesome so are you on the side of keeping the 6.5 or sell it? Thanks for comment and support brother. Check out our other content
@JMRRebuilders My truck has a LBZ Duramax under the hood.
I own a 99 silverado ccsb 2500 4x4 with 5.7 350. Just rolled 200 thousand miles. All stock drivetrain yet.
Man that's is super cool brother. Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content. Are you a keep the 6.5 guy?
Keep the 6.5
51 votes for keeping chevy
Give it a tank of hot shots diesel extreme to try to clean up those injectors. Worked for my 05 Duramax
Good to know brother worth a shot. Let's go. Are you a 6.5 keep guy or not? Thanks for comment and support brother. Check out our other content
Only thing that sounds better than 6.5 was the 6.2. Even tho the 6.2 didn’t really have enough power to pull a greasy bologna string out of a dogs butt I still love to hear both run. Keep the Chevy
Well now that's 19-8 to keep chevy. Looking like a chevy is in our future. Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content
Can’t beat an OBS Chevy. Keep the 6.5!
Let's go brother. You are the first vote for keeping her. That's 4 to 1 so far let's go. Thanks for comment and support. Check out our other content
