  • Nickel Plate Road 765 ran on Norfolk Southern rails May 9th and 10th to get to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) for their annual steam in the valley. Running under the symbol of 957, we catch them at several locations on their eastbound trip.
After several hours of waiting for NS traffic to clear, them to get new crews on board, and a few running at full steam ahead, we are glad to say that 765 is safely in her second home, Fitzwater maintenance yard. It was a journey to get here, but got there in the end. We thank the parent railroad of Norfolk Southern for allowing the 765 to travel on their rails and the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society for providing what updates they could on their trip.

Great chase Sam, definitely would have been cool to see her on the move, I was up in Leipsic about a month ago. Would have been a cool surprise on the diamond for sure. But I'm always either way to early or way to late. Thanks for sharing she sure looked good, stay safe out there.

Glad you enjoyed. Leipsic is a beautiful place I will have to make sure I get to again sometime. A lot more traffic than I imagined up there

Did not know they tow it to steam in the valley. I assumed 765 would power there on its own. Great video

Diesel is up front because of positive train control which the 765 does not have at this time

Did 765 ever have PTC? It ran excursions on Norfolk Southern without PTC but on the former PRR mainline in PA it needed cab signals to lead. Now, NS no longer wants excursions probably because of the liability. 765 actually came to my area in August 2015 and pulled excursions. I live just west of Allentown, PA. We boarded near Bethlehem and it went to Pittston and return on NS and RBMN. 425 was running on the Lehigh Gorge that weekend and we met it at Jim Thorpe on the way back, it was parked on a side track and 765 and 425 blew their whistles at each other. A diesel was handling the last gorge train of the day.

If I recall what I heard some 765 folks saying correctly, while they were wanting to install PTC a few years back, it would be a six figure installation cost. Given the cost of restoring their diesel locomotive currently and the annual upkeep cost of PTC and it's components, it is not economically feasible at this point in time for such nominal benefits. While I do agree I would love to see her running naked (my that's a weird way to word it), right now there is no real benefit to pushing to get it installed. Hope this answers your question, and sorry for the delay in response

@@6777Productions yes, the places where it can run excursions are non class 1 railroads that are exempt from PTC, and when being moved over NS there will be an NS diesel escorting it. It’s going back to Ohio soon for an all day excursion to Michigan. I think that excursions on NS are really done now. The CEO after Wick Moorman was a lawyer for NS and now they have a new CEO Alan Shaw and he seems more of the same. The culture at NS changed after Moorman left and the excursions soon ended, spring 2017.

Loved the video. Was interesting hearing ourselves on the radio. Just a little note, the prefix to the milepost are just "B" not "BI"

Ah thanks for the correction. I thought so too, but after listening to it several times sounded like they called it BI. Will make note of that for the future
