- FOUND MURDER WEAPON after being CONFRONTED by ANGRY NEIGHBOR
This was an encounter that I have never experienced. I was contacted by this family to come cut their Overgrown yard near the road as they were having challenges with people throwing trash and cutting wood out of here without permission. It started to rain once I arrived and I decided to mow it anymore.
After about a half hour of mowing, I had someone pull up on the side of the road and confront me, at first I thought he was going to state how well it was looking but he was clearly upset. He was a neighbor that was trying to sleep and was complaining the machine was too loud while also complaining it was county property and not the home owners. Moments later he told me I had 2 hours to finish or he was going to call the Police.
Once he left I finished cutting most of the yard but ended up leaving as it was getting more and more wet.
I went back the following weekend to finish mowing the remaining yard and I came across something I’ve never seen before and it wasn’t good. Now I had to decide, should I call the police or not!

Yep the neighbor was being very odd, but when you find a gun, Never Ever pick it up with your hands! It looks like numbers were filed off so if it was used in a crime the one thing is the fingerprints, sometimes they can be on a surface for a while even under water. But since you both touched it a lot, well if there was any on, doubtful there would be any after being touched and handled. The neighbor could of stashed it there or someone was casing those houses. The mowing of the hedgerow, I am curious if the owner said to do that? Growing up on a farm, I was taught to leave that area by the fences alone, one so critters have a harder time getting through it, and also to protect small game for when they do go hunting and soil erosion, just saying. But you did a awesome job, at least now people can pull over if they need to for any reasons and less chance to hit deer feeding .

1. It's 2 PM not 2 AM. Huge difference. 2. He had to drive to you so he can't be that close or he could have walked to you. 3. He works 3rd shift....expect daytime noises. Plus, it's not like you're out there every day. 4. He was threatening you. You should have called the cops on him. 5. Keep doing what you're doing.

Agreed. Out of 22 years in the USAF, I spent 10 years on 3d shift. I found 20 to 24 inch pedestal shop fans provide enough pink noise to cover just about anything!

The neighbor was a bully! He threatened you. Yes he needs sleep and he needs to sleep durning the day. But that is why people buy and wear ear plugs when they work the night shift. He can not stop neighbor working around their yard durning day light hours. You were doing a job!
I remember working that shift and I would wear ear plugs .
People that have to sleep during the day have to realize that most other people have to be up and about. My husband did it for 8 yrs and the neighbor always cut his lawn in the morning when my husband was trying to get to sleep. My husband wore earplugs and sometimes a eye mask. We had room darkening shades. The worst was a neighbor getting a new roof or having remodeling done. But he slept with the aid of melatonin and sheer tiredness.
Most county, city and town ordinances for quiet hours and such are during night time. Yeah you can't stop people from mowing their yard during the day. The neighbor threatening the cops on Erik is just despicable behavior.
And I personally can sleep with a mower. I live in an apartment with thin walls. I doubt the dude in his house would be much disturbed.

You handled that interaction way better than I would have... The two lines that ran through my head were "get some ear-muffs, i got a job to do" and "keep that tone and I'll help you get some sleep if you want."

Good grief, I worked 20 years on night shift in a hospital . My husband disabled, at times with kids and family living with us. I just rolled my eyes and wanted to tell him to cry me a river. Life went on when I was sleeping. A fan worked great! Keep up doing your good work!
Same here, I've worked 24 hour shifts as a FF for the past 26 years (so far), and I've still had kids to get to school, cut grass, raise kids, etc and I had to sleep when I could because life goes on. I would never dream of interrupting someone who is working for a living or working on their property to threaten them because I wanted to sleep. That mean old man was a turd, lol.

I worked 2nd or 3rd shift for over 30 years and if he hasn't figured out by now how to sleep with normal daily noise I pity his poor neighbors. If you work those hours you learn to sleep thru almost anything or you don't keep working nights. What a grouch.

As someone who worked night shift for over 30 years, I understand his frustration BUT I also realize that some jobs must be done when the weather allows. He could invest in some earplugs! As for that being county land, the laws ay be different from where I live (Western Maryland) but the landowner abutting that land is responsible for its upkeep. So, if landowner asked you to clean it up, so be it. Wonderful job! Keep paying it forward in kindness!

You did an excellent job of keeping that confrontation from escalating but you had a perfect right to mow. Counties usually have the responsibility of clearing from the edge of the road through the drainage ditch. Past that is the landowner’s responsibility. Trying to get the mowing done in two hours was NOT necessary. Especially in the middle of the day. I don’t believe one thing that guy said. About the sleep, about his cop friends, none of it. Don’t listen to idiots, stand up for yourself, and do what you know is right. Don’t allow bullies to be rewarded for their bad behavior.

I worked 12 hr night shifts in several tiwn states in houses and in apartments.I was a critical care RN.Lawn mowers,leaf blowers house getting built beside me. Never did i go out and and confront or threaten them

That's me. My career has me working nights and weekends but life goes on. I sleep when I can, a couple of power naps and go to bed early, but I would never do what that mean old man did. I mean what kind of a turd does that?

It’s not that the guy is calling the cops he said he had a couple of buddies in high up positions and they could have the cops stop him. If you work the night shift you have to learn to sleep with ear plugs in a dark bedroom furthest from the road way. Other people do not have to stop living their lives because you have to sleep in the day time hours. You have quiet hours and normal hours but this looks like its out in the country so unless the sheriffs keep getting complaints late at night they wont do anything anyways. Does he expect mowers, combines, cows, horses, coyotes, dogs to all be quiet during the day? This guys is just being a A-1 A**hole.

By the way that's one of the best cutting jobs I've watched lately. That roadside sure looks 100 % nicer now.
I'm a DOT foreman. Homeowners have the right to maintain their property all the way to the road. Only thing you can't do is disturb the ground ( change the original grade ) you can maintain your pipe and remove brush, debris and silt as needed to maintain drainage and cleanliness. Most row is 25 to 40 foot from center.
The owner own to the middle of the road. The county has an easement of 30 feet to do their work. Any changes of grade needs to be approved by the corp of engieneers.. Contrary to popular belief, The state does not own the ditches.. Its a good way to get sued and fired.
The distance from center of the road varies according to the road size, traffic and municipality plans for road expansion. My road used to have a 30' easement, now it's 40'. Oh well, they can mow the poison ivy in the ditches, tyvm.

I live in the city. I rest a lot during the day because of my heart. People cut grass, cut trees, reroof houses cant go out and tell people they cant work. Dogs bark during the night, cars racing, music playing at night.

Part two: I was traveling in New Mexico at night. Lightning caused a fire along the highway just inside the fence line. I called 911 and got out the fire department! If the road way had been like this stretch I could not have traveled that night. This job is a matter of public safety! Good job Eric!

Well Mr. Wet Nappy Neighbor, it IS a noisy machine when it's working. Quite unlike yourself, who is whing like a toddler.
The noise ordinance is set by the county and not up to dispute with those trying to complete work outdoors during those hours. If man-baby has an issue he should drive to the township hall and discuss the situation with them.
My township says that "excessive noise shall not exceed 16 hours a day, seven days a week". Most people are nice and try to keep extra loud activities between the hours of 07:30 and 22:00 (or when darkness falls).

That's a double felony right there. Illegally modified barrel under 18" and obscured serial number. Ballistics won't be any good, more than likely, its possible but highly unlikely. But getting law enforcement involved was indeed called for.
The claws grabbing the rocks were so cute. I know they were heavy but looked like little pebbles to the machine. Very satisfying work.

There is nothing wrong with what you are doing ! He needs to sleep to make a living while you're making your living providing outdoor services. I am a retired police officer and worked shifts, including the night shift, and I couldn't dream of approaching someone on a job site because I couldn't sleep. Suck it up, neighbor. Put in some foam earplugs. Seems like the more you try helping out, the neighbors are either jealous or ignorant about it.

My dad worked 3rd shift and we lived on a main drag through the city. He used these magical things called ear plugs so he could sleep. Amazing how a two dollar purchase helped his sleep.
As I'm sure many have already told you, the county has a 12 foot easement on all property that fronts a county maintained road. They do not own the property. Great job on the fence row. That machine you've got sure beats the devil out of a sling blade!

How can you be making that much noise with your tractor/mulcher than the traffic on the road? This is on him, not you. You are doing a great thing by giving back to the community. It was probably his gun that was found. He was panicking, and made up a story. He needs to be questioned by the authorities.

my goodness the drama over some temporary noise....and a job making the area more safe, pleasant , for drivers and landowner. I am really dumbfounded by the entitled voice of strangers coming onto someone else's property and demanding their needs be met. Stay safe Erik..this has been happening to you too often. Love your work...enjoy seeing the progress you are able to make on chaotic landscapes.
