Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! The 1st song you reacted is from Wacken Open Air (Germany) in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Following the success of Beste Zangers show, Floor performed a series of solo concerts in the Netherlands in early 2020 with songs from her entire career (After Forever, Revamp, Northward, Nightwish, Beste Zangers) following that the last and the largest concert, at AFAS Amsterdam, to be professionally recorded and broadcast online, with the support of a crowdfunding campaign. Floor has the greatest voice I have ever heard, and I've been around for 79 years. She has ruined me for other singers because they don't measure up to her versatile, powerful and pitch perfect voice. She is the 3rd front-woman for Nightwish so the studio version of this song is a different singer. Floor officially joined in 2013. Tuomas keyboards/founder/composer creates the vast majority of their songs. He is quite poetic so different people will sometimes have different ideas of what the song is all about. He likes that. I hope you continue your Nightwish journey as I have enjoyed your commentary and enthusiasm. 😊🤘

@@lisalynn6498 I usually say the greatest female singer, but I didn't on this comment. I have heard several songs from Dimash and it's for good reason that he is known as the 6-octave man. However, I'm not a fan of male singers that sing a lot in the upper registers. He likes to throw those whistle tones in also even when the song doesn't call for it. He's a great singer, but just not my cup of tea. As for selling a song emotionally and telling a story with gestures and facial features Floor's at the top. She's a High Sensitive Person and that trait shines on through her performances. Plus she can growl and beat him up in a cage match. 😂🤣😂 😊🤘

This is Symphonic Metal - a genre not known in the US. It's the merge of symphony and metal music, and it is often composed in chapters, using all the components this merge of music genres can bring - to enhance the story.
And Floor on vocals - she is unique - she is by far, the most powerful, versatile, skilled and talented storyteller in the galaxy.
You have only scratched the surface of Nightwish's and Floor's capabilities in this song - they are going to blow you away, because this is music you experience (Floorgasms!!) - and not just listen to. These stories - deep and poetic written, often with quotes from poets and / or scientist - will take you to journeys which you have never experienced before. And Floor will play with your emotions and make you feel happy, thoughtful, in love, sad, go bananas on the dancing floor - and make you cry your heart out. She is that strong!

Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range, versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. She is a spinto soprano with a range of around four octaves +. When listening to Floor sing, it is apparent that she has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several vocal coaches. Floor can sing in multiple languages and genres, and is a Master vocal coach. She often refers to herself as a vocal nerd. It is incredible how she is able to take any song from any genre and make it her own. This woman is a true gift to her craft and an incredible addition to a band that has always been great until 2013 when they officially hired the undisputed Queen of Metal, Floor Jansen, making Nightwish the greatest band on the planet. Gentlemen I do believe you've just had your first 'Floorgasam', we've all had them 😆 Floor Jansen is their 3rd female singer, this song was originally sung by their 1st singer Tarja. The bass player is also an amazing vocalist and there is over 20yrs of amazing music for you to discover. Live is the best way to watch them, you can see the enjoyment they get from doing it, also the are a whole, there is no one person better or more important than the other, they're all extremely talented musicians. The crowd is reported to be around 82,000!

Hi Eric and Kyle, that was a great patreon request. I remember recommending this to you as well. Nice to watch you reacting to it and liking it! Nightwish is a Finnish band, but their singer, Floor Jansen, is Dutch. She's been with them since 2012 (there have been 2 female singers before her). Floor is an incredible vocalist, one of the best female vocals in metal today. Know that if you listen to the studio version of this song, it will feature a different singer; Tarja Turunen (she was their original singer, 1996 - 2005). Also, even though their albums versions are wonderful, they are at their best live. Always very tight and entertaining. And there are lots of good quality live performances to watch. Nightwish's music is very diverse. They have the epic songs (like the one you've just heard), but there are also the very heavy songs, as well as the more celtic sounding ones for example. If you continue to listen to them, you'll find out. Their songs are compelling, with beautiful compositions and very poetic lyrics, written for the most part by the keyboard player, Tuomas Holopainen. @@Rykerroad hey Eric and Kyle, NW is one of those rare bands that are better Live and with Floor Jansen every song on this Wacken 2013 set list is better & standard setting, I have been to about 100 Live shows in my life and this Wacken 2013 even from a RUclips video is the best I have ever seen. Awesome reaction guys! 😄 I agree with Eric, this is one you feel for sure... This concert was awesome, with a very nice variety of songs, "Romanticide" is one I think you would like very much. And just to let you know, the album version of this song is gonna be different vocal / technical wise because it was recorded with the first vocalist Tarja. Floor is the third vocalist the band has had. Both awesome but different takes, personaly I prefer Floors style.😄✌
the studio version was recorded with their first vocalist....Tarja....the Waken concert is their third vocalist....Floor Jansen. The studio version is beautiful....but has a slightly different ending and Tarja is a fully trained Opera soprano. Enjoy.

Tarja is classicaly trained in "Lied", not opera. The difference is that "Lied" is classical singing with a small ensemble like a chamber orchestra, but opera is with a full orchestra. In both styles there is no microphone. Tarja has done some arias from operas with a small ensemble, but so has Floor. Neither of them has ever sung with a full symphonic orchestra because they simply do not have the training.
This is not to rag on Tarja or Floor, whose voices I have appreciated for over twenty years.

Hello Kyle and Eric, welcome into the wonderful world of storytelling by Nightwish. You were experiencing your very first Floorgasm. (And I expect many more will follow)
You just heard Floor Jansen (pronounce Yahn-Sen). Although the band is Finnish their 3rd female vocalist isn’t, she is Dutch. Floor was born on Februari 21st, 1981 in Goirle the Netherlands. At the age of 16 she started her career as (initially) just as background singer from the Dutch metal band ‘After Forever’ in 1997 but real soon she took over the lead until early 2009 and the band fell apart. Parallel she studied at the Dutch Rock Academy in Tilburg starting in 1999 where she graduated in 2003 and spent two years on classical training with the National Conservatory. She studied Musical Theatre and one year Opera. She plays guitar, piano and flute and has completed 12 years of music studies. She’s a Light Lyric Soprano and her vocalrange runs from E3 to D6. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons.
On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ‘ReVamp’, which was disbanded in September 2016. In August 2010 Jansen was a guest in the TV program De tiende van Tijl. In that program she sang an aria by Puccini. From October 1, 2012 (while she was within ReVamp, but recovering from a burnout) Floor replaced Anette Olzon as the singer of Nightwish halfway their Imaginaerum World Tour. After one year, on October 9th 2013, it was announced that she was to become the group's regular new front singer.

To me the lyrics tell a story of a woman who in the beginning of the song is fondly remembering the love she use to share with someone as she recalls swimming in the same moonlight waters …. Then hence the title of the song “ Ghost love score “ … their love is now just a ghost of what it use to be … the score is the type of music it’s written as in telling the story of this lost love in different scenes or chapters. After the fond memories in the beginning after the guitar solo and the instrumental bridge … she now is in her anger stage and her tone gets darker and talks about their lost love in a upset way now all while still singing that her “ Fall will be for you “ as she still can’t stop loving him even though it’s taking her down !

If it matters, a small part of Floor Jansen's stage presence might have to do with her being at least 6'1" barefoot; in those heels, she's 6'5".
The studio version features a different singer. Floor had only been with them about 8 months when this was recorded.

There are no bad songs and each one you hear is very different from the other. And each one will become your new favorite. That might sound ridiculous but we have seen it over and over again. This is a live band. This is a rarity that the live music is better than the engineered versions. Stick with live.

personally, I love it when reactors react to Nightwish with the lyrics on screen (while still doing the live performances of course). I just feel like it helps them appreciate the poetry of the music better. Plus, as they said, for some it's not always easy to catch every word. Just my two cents.

The "pipe organ" is just a fancy keyboard stand holding Tuomas's Korg synths. It is modelled after a famous sculpture at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. The flaming bull's head is the logo of the festival venue and has nothing to do with the band. Just FYI, that’s about 70 minutes into the show, and Floor had been killin’ it the whole way already. Also, that’s 82 THOUSAND people hanging on her every word; so, no pressure on her to Bury that (9 second long)high note.... At 6’1 and 170 pounds Floor is a smiling, singing, dancing, enchanting, stage commanding Valkyrie Goddess, and to me at least, a gift from above. Seeing the whole video of this concert, Especially the Floorgasm changed my life. It made me start listening to music again. I love watching these reaction videos and my biggest hope is that people follow and enjoy the Symphonic Metal path I was led to. Welcome to it.

@@nicod1361 That's why I said that it is a ***guide ***, it is not a bible. Every reactor is free to make his own choice, but.... there are a number of wrong speed, cut too short and other lesser videos available on YT. If the reactor chooses one of those videos, the Army is upset (to say the least) that they reacted to the 'wrong version'. As far as I know there are no 'wrong' versions in Gabriel's list. Are there better performances, better mixes available on YT, hell yeah, I don't doubt it. And it is part personal choice and preference. For example, GLS. I prefer the Buenos Aires 2012 version, although the Wacken 2013 videos is the most reacted to. Once they are 'hooked', It is up to the reactor, if they are interested enough, to check out other versions.
About the lyrics, classically trained singers use vowel modification which can make them difficult to understand on first listen. Once the ear gets accustomed to her voice, you'll understand virtually every word. Her diction is actually very good and for the most part she is easily understood.
Listening to the studio version won't be of much help as it was performed by their first singer who was also classically trained. While the singer you heard here, Floor Jansen, uses a variety of styles, the original singer, Tarja Turunen, uses exclusively classical techniques. To make matters worse, her English diction is not the best, so understanding the lyrics in the album version will be more of a challenge than the live version.

@@Rykerroad When classically trained singers sing in English, they use a lot of vowel modification to take the edge off of the harsher sounds. They'll also apply an English accent to smooth out harsher consonants. Think how an American would say 'dark' vs. an Englishman. It is 'daRRRK' vs. 'dahk'.
Also, the greater the power, the more the vowel modification. At the end when she is going all out with those high, powerful belts, she is really rounding the sounds off. She is singing "My fall will be for you" but it comes out more like, "Mah fall will bay foh yo" and sung with an English accent on the words "fall will" and "for". The words "My" and "you" are sung showing a lot of teeth and so become quite nasal and pingy.
Something you can try so as to be able to pick up on these techniques. Stand in front of a mirror and say "May" with a big smile while showing lots of teeth. The "ay" will come out sounding bright, nasal and with a lot of ping. Now say "May" again only showing no teeth and with more of an "O" mouth shape. By covering the "ay" sound when she sings "Advent of May" she smooths off the sound.
The composer Tuomas Holopainen (the keyboardist) also writes the lyrics and they're quite poetic. That just adds to the difficulty of understanding Nightwish lyrics
I’ve watched a lot of reaction videos to this performance, and don’t comment on many of them. Was good to see you guys having a great first experience with Nightwish. But I gotta say, Kyle I can see that you enjoyed the hell out of this one. Brace yourselves, the rabbit hole is very deep.

I think you should react to more of their music. Nightwish have made so much good music. It's all different from hard metal to something more in the direction of folk music. They are so talented.

Floor Jansen (Dutch vocalist) is the singer of Nightwish for 8 years now. She can sing opera, classic, Metal Rock, grunt, growl. Foor sings live every not perfect!
She is a fully trained classical vocalist (which includes opera) at the Music university in Amsterdam and after that she finished the Rock Academy in Holland.
There is other singer like Floor! Nightwish is a band who have fun on stage but play extremely well and spot on.
