Why Waterslide Wipeout Was Less Fun Than It Looked

- Tested member Mark Burban wondered, "I've always wondered if the MythBusters crew at large (ie cameramen etc) ever got to experience some of the more fun myths tested; ie, giant waterslide or wakeboarding with heavy machinery." Adam's answer takes him down memory lane to a shoot that was a lot less fun than it looked -- for him, anyway. Adam: Don’t go down the water slide
Crew *wearing swim trunks*: wouldn’t dream about it boss
Everyone watching knew exactly what was coming next. Let’s be honest, I’d have done it too.
@@craigmiller4199 Oh yah now *THAT'S* a given. 🤣
@@craigmiller4199 Oh, totally. But anyone in a leadership position was required to inform them that doing so was 'forbidden' and thus not covered should anything go wrong... and then, the higher-ups' collective asses covered from lawsuits - time for fun!
@@trenthawkins Yeah, it sounds more like "If you go down the slide, it's at your own, personal risk. You will be doing it as a private individual, not as an employee."
@@craigmiller4199 we all would
I mean, I wouldn't be the first one going down, but yeah.
The phrase "If you get hurt, it will not be covered by workman's comp" is a green light to go ahead, if I've ever heard one.
while i am acting as a boss, i cannot endorse reckless behavior. as a friend... i saw nothing
yeah, i would see that as green light, because i know if something goes wrong. nobody is gonna be in trouble. in the other hand if my boss says to me "don't do that" and nothing else, i will not do that, because maybe if i get hurt my boss is gonna take the responsability.
LOL. California. Of course it will be.
Haha yeah, it's what you hear in the distance, getting fainter and fainter as you go down the slide.
Hahahaha for real
every time Adam apologizes for getting sidetracked he has just told a great story
That's why I watch this channel. For the tangents.
"Sorry for getting sidetracked" would be an amazing title for Adam's auto-biography
Noticed this
It was a damn fine side track
He should apologize for ending the side story lol
you have a tape with the crew doing "the superman" on the slide?! PLEASE , SHOW IT
Yes
Please!!!
Discovery doesn't own private video, yeah?
I totally would subscribe to see this
Yes please 🙏 show it.
'Teenagers are going to hurt themselves' -proceeds telling a story in which every single super responsible adult is doing the forbidden danger thing.
To be fair they spent 2 days with adam and Jamie doing it. They also been in the same safety instruction briefings as Adam and Jamie.
Adults? Super responsible? ROTFL!
You know, the difference between men and boys is the price of the toys...
@@realulli off course ^^
Same reason I get to do things my kids don't... if I break something, I pay for it. If YOU break something, you don't pay for it... I do.
adults? just larger children.
If I learned anything as a kid, it's that the only way to make going down a slide like that even more fun is to be told you're not to do it.
That statement pretty much sums up being a child in general. The more you're told "Don't do it!" By adults the more you want to.
@@itwasagoodideaatthetime7980 The more I'm told not to as an adult, the more I consider not doing it but then doing it anyway because I'm an adult who makes their own decisions.
@@user-st7rq3sn7v Yes but kids are 10 times worse about it. They have zero to little in the way of impulse control or higher logical thought processes.
@@itwasagoodideaatthetime7980 it's also dumb to give somebody the "no" or "never" statement, because it will just spur them to do it, especially if that somebody wants to do it.

" under no circumstances are you to go down the slide."
" hey guys when, when we do the thing we're not supposed to do, let's do it in the unsafest way possible and make sure there's video evidence of it"

Exactly its more or less: If you do this you are doing so as a private citizen and we have no responsibility
Your*
We know you're going to do it anyway so we're just ensuring we're not legally liable, lol. Fair enough, I say.
My favorite thing about watching Adam, is that 10+ years later and it still comes through how much he enjoyed working with the people who made 'Myth Busters' possible. His recollection of the stunt man, and crediting that guy for making the final shot possible, was really heartwarming to hear on a Friday. Started my weekend off right.
That story was epic
It is cool he has stayed so open to continue talking about it and has all these great stories that he isn't burned out on telling and re-telling I'm sure many times. Comparing this to how disinterested and burned out someone like David Duchovny can get discussing X-files....goes to show what a difference it can bring when you get a good pool of interesting questions, and actually want to discuss it lol.
On one hand, as an employer you can't tell people that it's okay to go down the mega water slide when you aren't looking. As a person you can't reasonably expect anybody to actually not go down the mega water slide the moment you look away.
The second he said "And we specifically explained to them that they were not allowed....." I started laughing my ass off
I bet the second Adam got in the car he said to someone they are going down that slide the second we leave!
@@DavidKnowles0 you think they had time to get to the car? lol
“I’m sorry, I’ve just gone off the rails answering your question,” Adam says, fully aware he’s given us exactly what we come here for.
We need that "superman style" clip, Adam.
Oh Ye Gods Yes! *PLEASE!* We *NEED* To See This Footage!
idc if its one blobby picture, we need it XD
Yes, please release that clip
PLZ!!!!!! POST IT!!!!!!!

Adam: Don’t try this at home.
Crew: We’re not at home.
5:22 Possibly the best impression of a camera boat being moved through the water by a 12 V electric motor that has ever been put on video.
Adam is a great actor.
I have to give you immense credit, Adam. I watched that episode recently and there was no indication at all that you were in pain or a bad mood. You were the standard, jovial, excited Adam, from what we could see on camera.
If I were on said crew, you would have had to finish your thought after I got back out of the water, because I would have already started going down the slide while you were telling us "not to". lol
And then they let you go for being an insurance liability.
Same
of course they did! everyone knew Adam was doing his cya due diligence, essentially saying "you do you" XD you gotta be thinking it's a once in a lifetime opportunity, i think the only conflict that should stop you is personal comfort with the risk. younger me might've done it. older me would think longer about it and prolly say, "eff it, let's go before i change my mind" XD
Telling them not to, is ample warning for legal.
After having spent a whole day watching "the talent" demonstrate all the ways to do it wrong? Why not?
Stories like this are exactly what I hoped the set of Mythbusters was like. Just all around fun AND hard work to put together one of the most iconic and time-tested shows of the 21st century.
"That was ten years ago, who cares now?"
Ten years ago.
It truly is the little things that hurt the most.
I remember when this episode got released in my country. I'm just 21...
@@ErickSoares3 20 here and I remember the same thing. I remember when the show ended I was so sad - I couldn't understand why they wouldn't keep it on the show forever. looking back, it actually had quite an impressive runtime especially considering it was likely VERY expensive.

Great comment! 😂
I think this story summarizes perfectly what mythbusters was all about: Great stories. Proof that Adam was the perfect host is his story telling. He really knows how to build on these 'tangents'
I feel like we all need a GIF of Adam pretending to be a motor boat
I love that adam talks like he’s actually taking to some and he often replies to questions that i bring up in my mind. I’m pretty sure he’s talking to himself in his mind while explaining
This is why he so good at presenting shows like these, he knows the questions the viewers will be asking themselves and give us the answers.
Like the story of the crew going down the slide. Many presenters would leave the viewers hanging on whether they filmed it or not, Adam not only tells us, he also tells us he has the footage as well. Many presenters on RUclips wouldn't do that.
"don't go down the slide"
"uhhh...sure thing boss!" *they all proceed to go down the slide, because duh* XD
ROTFLMAO! Well wouldn't you to if you had been given the chance.
@@itwasagoodideaatthetime7980 Absolutely!
That's another underrated talent: it's rare for someone to, like Nick, not only detect, but correctly assess and subsequently address in an effective manner, the mood, headspace, feelings, or what have you, of people around them... and/or the way the different moods and modes of different people in a crew are working (or *not* working) together, and finding the right words or actions to optimize the team.
I've always had a sixth sense for that stuff, and it took me until my 30s to understand that isn't just a thing everyone can do. Now that I know that, I'm all the more impressed by actions such as those taken by Nick, with his Gipper speech to get Adam in the most productive and most safe headspace. Who knows, he could have saved Adam from another harrowing tale of someone who, focused on just being finally done, isn't concentrating and gets injured or causes some other fiasco.
I don't think it would be that rare for stunt people, especially 3rd gen, to be able to know the thought process of people who are repetedly doing the same stunt over and over again. They've went through the exact same things thousands of times.
Adam and Jamie: whatever you do, don’t go down the water slide.
Crew: yeah boss. (Thought bubble: we have to do it now)
I wasn't... but now I will.
At first I heard, "_waterboarding_ with heavy machinery".
That, I think, would be less fun for the crew.
"All you need to think is: Will the director want another take" Words to live by.
Adam Savage can talk to a camera like it's his best friend. Amazing guy.
I will never forget the look on his face when the roll of tape took off down the slide.
I wish they showed clips from the show. I'm sure there are reasons why but visuals would be helpful.
The reason why is that Adam doesn't own the footage, Discovery does, and they'd have to license it from discovery to put it on RUclips.
Yes, unfortunately, we don't own the copyright, so we can't show the clips. We wish we could too!
@@tested this is the most disappointing but also unsurprising news. I hate what modern copyright has done to creative work.
@@tested Have you asked them? You'd think they'd ok using x amount of small clips a month for free given its one of the shows stars channels- just small 10 sec clips.. then again I know how tight-ass a lot of the big copyright owners can be.
Well, Adam can't tell you, but we can. There is probably a link to the segment in your recommended column to the right. Say, like, umm, I dunno... this one?

"There is no such thing as 'having this down.'"
Truer word could not be spoken.
There is no such thing as "having this down." is another Adam quote I wanted on a shirt
Adam and Jamie: You can’t go down the slide while we leave you here alone and unsupervised.
Crew: WHEEEEE!!!! What?
Great story. You are a wonderful storyteller, and that sort of thing is what really made mythbusters the phenom it was. Not the science, not the explosions, but the wonderful story telling.
I would love a show like that to come back. I have tried watching so many similar shows, but have yet to see one that catches that same magic.
Does Adam still have a long piece of my Track from our participation in the Toy Car vs Real Car myth? (Part of the 'Is Yawning Contagious' episode)
Man, screw you - just *reading* that last sentence made me yawn 😝
I hope he does!
Nope, got scrapped.
@@aborted4196 I took home all of the track and still have it. He asked for one piece for his kids.
Thing's that didn't happen..
I'm sorry the giant waterslide wasn't as fun as it looked; thank you for sticking it out as this was one of my favorite myths!
The best scenes of the Waterslide Episode was the Duct Tape and Adams perfect curve jump in to the water 😂
As soon as the Duct Tape got away from him we all *KNEW* that was going to happen. But it doesn't make it any less entertaining for it's predictablity. 🤣
Good times
My absolute favorite part of this video, is Adam being the boat to come get him!
4:43 There is a term for it that has been translated probably over a million times, but originally it was called "hold my beer" or "y'all watch this".
Edit: We gonna need that footage
Everyone needs to have a friend like Adam in these times. His enthusiasm and joy is so contagious.
You totally, absolutely, 100% must NOT go down that slide!
Now I'm gonna leave you with that slide...
*wink*
"Does my director want another" has become part of my internal Flip Book when I'm acting... Thanks for it, dude!
"If you go down the slide, it WON'T be covered by workman's comp!"
Me: "OK FAIR ENOUGH BYE WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!"
Kudos to Nick for giving you the words you needed to hear. What a great pep talk.
And yeah... I would have waited, watching the producer's car go down the road, and then called 'dibs' on the first run.
Watching adam tell stories about "the mythbuster days" makes me feel old, but im glad i was there to expirience it.
Love these videos. The crew of Mythbusters sound as though they were truly awesome people.
They are. They're family, and they've filmed for Tested on occasion too since MythBusters ended!
@@tested That is awesome to hear that some of the MythBusters film crew helps with your Tested show. Loved watching MythBusters (Wish i had the whole series on dvd) and enjoyed Mythbusters Jr. Speaking of the Jr. show, any chance of it returning for a season 2?
Honestly when you went off on the tangent about Nick giving you the pep-talk, given the premise of the video, I figured he was gonna give you the talk and then hop on the slide and ride down it himself. I was slightly disappointed when you said he walked back down the hill, lol
Eh, he was The Safety Guy. Of all the people on the shoot who couldn't afford to do it, he was probably #1. (Not that he couldn't have done it without injury, but Discovery would probably have stopped calling him if he had tried it! Bad example to set and all that.)
Every good story starts with "I got this..." being ever so confidently spoken by the person about to say "nope, I didn't". LOL
I don't know Nick and have never heard Nick's voice and yet somehow I am absolutely sure this is a spot-on impression XD
It's amazing how much a perfect pep talk can change things!
I love the genuine respect he has for everyone he works with.
As a viewer since the very first episode of MB, these stories of behind the scenes stuff are GOLD! MB represented a big chunk of my life and you guys did a lot if science stuff I loved. I Really miss you and the team. Hope to hear more from you.
"See you at the bottom dude.. go for it.." Classic last words after everytime I have broken a bone or seriously injured. haha But bones mend, full send.
You say that, but it’s true. I broke my femur when I was 14 because I decided to ride down a steep hill on my longboard and I tried slowing down and my foot caught the pavement and well you can imagine what happened next, there was so much tension on my leg that I knew before I broke it, that something was going to happen.
@@Z-man8768 HAHA thats hilarious man. I have also had a very rough experience with a long board. I got speed wobbles going down a hill that I completely underestimated as a kid. Flew off and cracked my hip lol. So times you just gotta go for it.
ROTFLMAO! "See you at the bottom dude.. go for it.." is the 'sober' version of "Hold my beer Y'all & watch this!"
Had a close call going downhill on a longboard as well, thou it was my friends who almost ate it and not me.
I, being the slightly more experienced rider, decided to sit on the board and break with both feet going down the hill. Once I got down I had just about time to turn around and see both of them starting to go down it, standing up. Mind you only one of them had (very little) experience with foot breaking while the other started riding like two-three days ago.
The one who had a little experience in foot to breaking over did it and fucked up his foot for a while while the other went head first into long grass at the side of the road.
Neither one broke anything or got any permanent damages by sheer luck. No helmets or protective gear on any of us.
Nowadays I keep to eboarding instead, breaks are invaluable hah~
@@Plasticjesus504 those wobbles is what made me slow down but my foot caught in the pavement and that pressure was immense, I could not lift my leg off my board and did the splits till something gave out and that was my femur.
How did I not know Adam had a channel? Instantly subbed. I grew up with this man, saw every episode of mythbusters. Learned a crazy amount from you guys over the years.
4:38 My 59 years worth of experiences definitely confirms that, "No, you DON'T have this down!"
Same here.
I thought I "had it down" when I did a hanging flip off a horizontal bar. I made sure my head cleared the ground, and did some slow spins around the bar and thought it was fine. Doing it for real, I released my legs and they drove right into the ground and I snapped my femur just below my hip. I taught my niece and nephew a good lesson that day.
I just watched that episode, and I can only congratulate Adam on his professionalism, because he gave no sign that he was suffering in any way shape or form during that portion of the show.
Adam tempting the crew like a little devil on the shoulder: don't go down that water slide!
The water slide episode was always my favorite. It looked so fun.
That was a great story, would have totally written on that slide as well! I love how some of these questions that get awnsered get sidetrack and usually the story is well worth it.

And... no, if I was in the crew, there's no way I'd have missed the chance to go on that slide either. 😁

Wow. First time caller, LONG time listener. Shout out to 2002, I remember WAITING to watch Mythbusters on Discovery, in Canada, on a 3.5m dish. Adam, you look GREAT! Keep it up, you now preach to my children; inspiring two generations of science nerds is your mantle now, although we take so warmly to Kyle as well, having watched him grow from Nerdist. Jamie and Adam were the modern Abbot and Costello. A complimentary pair that we may not see the likes of again for decades….
Was I the only one who had flashbacks to Tim Conway’s old man sketches on the Carol Burnett Show when he was describing how slow the rescue boat was with the trolling motor? No? Just me then? (quietly sits back down in the corner and tries to blend in to the background).
I loved that show, Carol, Tim, Harvey and the rest were hilarious, physical slap-stick style comedy.

'Oldest man in the world' moving across the screen. YES!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA
That is an awesome story. Cool insight. Heartwarming inspiration. The "and they did it anyway" all awesome. When Adam gets "sidetracked" it is almost always because he went and answered a question we didn't know to ask or told a story we didn't even know we wanted to hear.
