      You drive through North Shore to get to Kailua? That must take you hours. Once, I had a girlfriend that lived in Waianae and I lived in Kaneohe. She had never been to Kaneohe before and I had never been to Waianae before we met. This was back in the 90s, and I think more people come to the Windward side more these days.

    Last summer our family stayed in an Airbnb in Kailua for six weeks. I definitely agree with you with the pros and cons. We met great people there but there were also others that acted like their s**t don’t stink, straight up racist, or ignorant. We were really fortunate that the Waimanalo community that was next town over welcomed us to their neighborhood and became part of their ohana.

    One thing I just found out, The property taxes are lot less than NY. My brother is in Foster Village, he has nothing to complain about. I grew up in Kailua when it was a one-traffic light town. Oh I remember the old days. Kuulei delicatessan. That Japanese family made the best stuff.

    I've live here in Kailua for around a year now and I love it. But to the last point there is a lot of entitlement I've seen here. And they will let you know if they have money in your own way. I didn't get that as much in Kaneohe.

    • @movingtohawaii
      @movingtohawaii  Год назад +3

      Can you elaborate on that? Like what’s an example? Kailua is an amazing place and it’s important that viewers and comment readers know that we are digging into nuance and subtleties.

      @@movingtohawaii Sure I can try my best to answer this, (and for the record I really love this area and have no plans moving from the east side of Oahu any time soon) but when your going around Kailua town you get a sense of wealth and a pride of where they live. So much so I've went to local restaurant and have been passed up by waiters (a few different times) to service more upscale locals that have made a name for them self's around the town. And they have that sense of entitlement when it happens. Now to be honest this could be because of me and "I don't get it yet living here" But with that said there is the flip side to that. Every Sunday I go to Morning Brew and I have the most amazing conversations with people that live here. So its odd in some ways and hard to explain in others. I guess the best way I can put it from my perspective that I feel like an outsider always looking in. But this could happen any where on the island? But I would totally buy a house here and live here for the rest of my life. lol Ok sorry for the really long post

    i got a con lol. grew up there and a new neighbor from california tore down OUR hedges and trees on OUR LOT and built a huge brick wall that blocked all the tradewinds through the yard. built a huge house out of concrete and foam all the way up to the property line. 🤦‍♂the biggest con of kailua is that it's the #1 place (non-condo) that tourists from california move to. it's like 90+% white at this point, with less than half of them growing up there.
    if you want a similar life with less karens move closer to hawaii kai side, kaneohe or west of town.

    I live in old Kailua, beachside house. It's one of the best locations on the island. There are some people who live there that are "entitled acting". It's a pretty looking place to live but I agree that some of the people there aren't big on Aloha, if you know what I mean lol
