The felt cowboy hat is an American design based on the old country felt hats and the spanish/Mexican palm leaf hats. It really kicked off with stetsons boss of the plains hat.

Your partially right. Most cowboys were of Mestizo descent however not pure Spanish decent because back then biemg cowboy was low class to low for a pure Spaniard to have but to high for an Mexican indian. So a Mexican Mestizo or mixed race person was perfect for the job and from there they devloped alot of the styles and stuff. Cowboy hats most likey eveolved from the Mexican sombrero the Vaqueros used. And no they weren't the peasnat sombreros that look like saucers they were very elegant.

I dont care about the race: when Mexico was Nueva España they were spanish. all of them, from the navajo, to the indios pueblo, from the hopi, to the mestizos, from criollos to novohispanos. the mixed culture came from Spain, but was already a different thing in each terrytory...but at the same time a similar pattern. thats why if you go to Colombia, to Argentina or even Sicily and southern italy you will find similar patterns from the 1700s wich was the beginning of a real new State of continental dimensions. If history would have been different, I guess today most of latinoamerica would remain united. of course they would have kicked out Spain, as US and Canada did with UK. but they would be a main power and not a miriad of countries fighting against each other and dominated always by US.

the beautiful thing about pointing out the origin in Spain and not Mexico (wich is an obvius thing anyone with a bit of knowled would guess) is to trace to the medieval times. before that, we have nothing. In Roman Empire there were no cowboys as we know them. But in medieval times, Muslims and Christians fought each other for centuries. The cattle and the big plains developed the culture basically as we know it. and then, horses, cowboys and ALSO the cows were brought to north, center and southamerica. the rest...is History. But is very nice to see how the cowboy kepts many nativeamerican traces in the mexican culture while in the US little by little was changed by the anglogermanic influence. Tha's the beauty of culture and history. To see the origins, but also the different paths.....cheers.

I’m Hispanic. Stop bitching. Vaqueros and cowboys are NOT the same. They both have their own unique culture and identity. And although the cowboy does has its roots in the vaquero, it’s like saying the mafia and the crips are the same thing. They both deal with drugs and are violent but are totally different. Same thing here. No one is denying its roots. But the cowboy is AMERICAN. Not Mexican, not Spanish. If it were the same, the vaquero would be known around the world today as there would be no distinction. But it isn’t. So stop bitching.

Viceroy of new Spain needed more people to capitalize on the huge cattle industry in the north. Todays Texas and the state of Chihuahua. Once Mexico became independent they taxed the shit out of cattle industry which was one reason why Texas became independent. American cowboy saddle design originates from arab saddle, because cattle round up comes from Spain and was invented during the crusades/ reconquista..... Modern American round up Techniques come from Mexico.... Chaps were invented in Spain. Americans use vocab like lasso, rodeo, Bonanza, which is ding, ding, ding, Spanish.... And lastly bull riding comes from Mexico as well, Jalisco to be exact.
