    the problem with the new CBA is that it punishes teams that draft and develop well because there is no salary tax exceptions for players that you drafted.

    • @randygraham926

      @jake8748 3 месяца назад +10

      Yeah, though with some exceptions maybe. As in a team that tanks 4 or 5 seasons to get alot of lottery capital maybe be restricted.
      Though another issue is this would alter the value of draft picks after so many have been traded. Imagine you traded your picks under this system of rules but before those picks conveyed they change it so the picks are now worth significantly more. They maybe need to something like that worked out to come into play in 5+ years time or something so reset the draft picks and values.

      Honest question here... Doesn't that mean that the teams will negotiate lower salaries from now on? Max deals should be harder now that spent really matters. It doesn't matter if a star threatens to leave, who will pay them as much as they want without butchering their current roster? The way I see it, and I may be completely wrong, the teams will not give the players top money so easily anymore....

    • @jake8748
      @jake8748 3 месяца назад +4

I think the main reason is cause there's no defense played until the last 8 minutes, that's when a lot of people tune in. The NBA has basically punished the defense by removing hand checking and more importantly adding the gather step and allowing carries to make the offense look better. It's boring.

Also lasty its boring seeing back to backs i like seeing the underdogs or the ones not suspected to win actually win a chip i loved that Denver got their first chip not to long ago and i'm not a Denver fan but liked how it was a new team and not the same 4 teams over and over again its bland boring and stupid

    I dont think that the quality of the NBA product has a direct effect on ratings. As a college student i enjoy watching basketball game and media surrounding it, but mostly through youtube or restreams. The NBA product is the most inaccessible its been since the 70s most likely. Basketball is a fast growing sport among people, something coveted by the other major sports, but young people dont have expensive cable plans or league pass. While i dont know for sure, i would hazard a guess that a graph of nba finals ratings would mirror a graph of household cable adoption. Rising in the 80s/90s, hitting a plateau in the 2000/2010s and shrinking with the rise of streaming.

No defense, non-competitive, players don't care about the fans, players are crybabies, NBA lacks soul, three point spam, leftist politics injected into the game. People like to see dunks and threes, that doesn't mean people want to see EASY + wide open dunks and threes. Who has the biggest advantage in the league? Lakers. But guess who’s at the very bottom? Warriors
      The thing is, the Warriors currently have the largest fan base of all the teams. As they should. The ratings graph from this video proves this. This IS the reason why the ratings are 💩. Speaking for myself, having Cavs-Warriors for 4 straight years in the Finals was something I referred to as "the dark times". Not much better was 1980-1998 where if you didn't play for the Celtics, Lakers, Pistons, Rockets, Bulls, or 76ers (once), you just didn't get a ring. I'm not a fan of dynasties, and I'm not a fan of big market teams like Los Angeles, New York, Miami, etc. getting no-cap spending to accompany their already built-in advantage of being cities rich players want to be. Whether that's the case or not, however, I do like teams to be rewarded for developing their core outside of big-ticket free agents and especially getting to keep guys they drafted or acquired before they became superstars.
    I'm kind of torn. I don't really want to see Klay Thompson playing for anyone other than the Warriors, but I don't really want to see the Warriors in the Finals again anytime in the near future.

I've been watching hoops since 1991 and the amount of injuries these days is off the charts.

    I dont even need to see the video. People have been wishing on the Warriors downfall for a long time. Sad part is the casuals think its a chuck 3 and clock out type of team. There's so much more going on. Curry has proven so much more than what was asked of him. His offense is unlike anything we have ever seen. Dray is a donkey dumbfuck but his iq and defense, coupled with his ability to be a swiss army knife is amazing. The warriors have played some of the best systematic, fundamental, beautiful basketball I have ever seen. Go watch 2022 playoffs if you disagree. Curry is a 1 of a kind, he is in the convo with the greats, by virtue of being unique, holding records that people cant even scratch, and rewriting how you play basketball. Also, fun fact, that record setting season where wars got 73 wins, Dray got the most minutes and games started. We can hold him accountable for his on court antics, but at least he keeps it on the court, we act like we know but we don't. He has an amazing relationship with the majority of players he has played against.
    I hated on this team for a long time. I was from the bay and I honestly wished on their downfall. I didn't realize I was witnessing a revolution. I started really trying to understand basketball and when I did that I appreciated Lebron, the Warriors, and KD so much more. I think as couch sitters we get way too comfortable judging stars when in reality they are just like us, and they are putting in work that few of us even understand.
    It's crazy to think as a fan you hold it against a nba player to average 31 ppg 50-40-90 in the greatest stage in nba history and hate on them. KD deserves some flowers. I dont give a fuck if he joined a 73 wins team. They drafted their star players. What team did that? Who has pulled those stats in a finals series? KD is a monster, we should show him some love, and Steph's gravity is at an all time record when it comes to basketball.
    Stop hating on Lebron Steph and KD. Those guys are monsters, mentality wise, talent wise, and personality wise. None of ya'll could handle the scrutiny of a million people juding your every move. These dudes owned the league up till recently. Throw them some flowers and stop being haters, NBA fans foster a hateful ass culture. Show some fuckin love.

    I understand the NBA doesn't make a penny off pirated streams of games, but if they moved to count viewers via the pirate feeds instead of aggressively shut them down, I guarantee they'd see a big boost in viewership of all NBA games, pre-season, summer league, regular season and of course playoffs. The amount of people I know and heard using pirate streaming sites this year was a record for sure, especially for the finals. In fact, I'd argue that is where most of their viewership is going and has gone to - pirated feeds instead of paying money to watch. And when it aligns with people getting sick and tired of dynasties and the same damn superstars and teams getting all the attention and talk, it lowers people's willingness to pay for the lower quality product.

  • @ScuffTuff
    @ScuffTuff 3 месяца назад

    I feel a big reason why the ratings are dropping that was completely untouched in this video is the rise of streaming and pirating. THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT LIKE THE OLD WAY ARE FANS OF TEAMS WHOSE OWNERS WILL JUST BUY THEIR CHAMPIONSHIP.
    The Warriors were a half billion dollar team with LT. Compare that to the Grizzlies who lost to them in the playoffs 2 years ago, around 120 million! NO WAY IS A TEAM WORTH 4X THE OTHER TEAM GOING TO RESULT IN A WIN FOR THE CHEAPER TEAM! It happens, yes, OKC is an example, but it’s rare.
    ALL THESE PEOPLE WHO PUT RINGS AS A PLAYERS HISTORICAL WORTH ARE BASICALLY EQUATING RICH OWNERS WITH REAL BASKETBALL SKILL.

    You can't really judge the popularity of parity by the 1970's. The finals were still tape-delayed, back then. And in terms of raw numbers, the NBA was nowhere near as popular. Ratings are merely a percentage of the tv audience -- not the actual audience. And there were only a few channels in the 1970's. So, with so few options, the percentage of viewers for 70's ball was going to be higher than it should have been -- even though they were tape-delayed games -- and even though the sport wasn't that popular. The moment that elevated basketball was actually the 1979 NCAA championship between Larry and Magic. So, again, those 70's numbers are inflated due to restrictions on choice of programs to watch. The 80's had more channels available - especially by the end of the decade - but even if you go into the 1990's, only 60% of Americans had cable tv. And there was no internet viewing options -- nor was satellite big yet. So, options were still restricted for many people. And in the 80's basketball felt like the new sport. Oh sure, it had been around forever, but it really only gained true national interest at that time. With limited channels for at least half of Americans, it's still not fair to compare ratings-wise.
    But what about the 1990's? Michael Jordan was in seven commercials at the same time. Seven. Nike, Wheaties, McDonald's Rayovac (though he may have switched to Energizer), Gatorade, and Ballpark franks. The 1990's was the peak of commercials being a part of pop-culture. The 1990's was also the peak of sports viewrship. ESPN was big, and that fact made even non-ESPN sports programs better. Therefore, athletes were infinitely marketable, and Jordan was the most marketable out of all of them. Furthermore, everyone watched tv, and in spite of new channels, people still felt culturally obligated to watch certain main events that everyone else was watching. In addition, Michael is still considered to be the GOAT by most people. The confluence of marketing, sports interest, unified viewrship, and basketball talent will probably never happen again.
    So, there is no snese in comparing percentage of tv viewers from then until now. The NBA will likely never get back to that. It's not a valuable metric to measure how well the NBA is doing.
    ----------------------
    What's more relevant is the recent drop-off, and I really don't think that parity is the issue. The NBA struggled with viewership during the regular season so badly this year, that they literally changed the rules of the game.
    Seriously.
    They made refs call the game totally different after the All-Star break. They stopped calling fouls so strictly. It altered NBA offense and defense.
    It took a while to get to the point where the NBA had to change things -- and the previously bad rules is partly what lead to the decline in ratings. It will also take a while for the rule changes to draw people back.
    In the meantime, the NBA hasn't tried the parity thing since the 70's (which we can't reasonably compare to now for all the reasons mentioned earlier). And initially, when you try something new, there can be a hit. A drop-off. So, if you are right about parity hurting the NBA, it could be a temporary thing. And it also might take a while to draw in the people who never tuned into the NBA *because* of the dynasties. There are people like that. Once those anti-dynasty people realize that those days are over, then we could see some uptick. But it will take a bit!
    You neeed to also remember that if people loved the dynasties of the past, it was because players didn't collude to form them...
    --------------------------
    Also, the NBA likely lost viewership due to Black Lives Matter.
    In order to stay perfectly neutral here, I'll just say this: To people on the left, Black Lives Matter was about justice, reform, civil rights, and many other wonderful things. To people on the right, Black Lives Matter was a cover for a socialistic agenda that sought to re-define capitalism and other American institutions in a negative way.
    Regardless of who is right, conservatives watch more sports than liberals.
    Regardless of who is right, black athletes in the NBA were more outspoken in favor of BLM than athletes in any other sport.
    Regardless of who is right, these things would lead to the NBA losing viewrship from conservatives... who watch more sports than liberals.
    Therefore, the NBA took a huge hit from America's #1 sports-watching audience.
    Yikes.
    ----------------------------
    So, there are a lot of issues besides parity. I think the NBA is legit to try something to get itself out of its funk.

    The fact that two things are happening at once could kill the NBA. They’ve successfully got pairing in the league from the new CBA… BUT that means there’s more teams that will win and new players winning championships.
    Well, the current sports media isn’t adept to cover this. The talking heads format prefers covering drama of only a handful of key teams. They are terrible at covering the whole league (e.g. the push for Ant being the next MJ)
    So the casual fan has no idea what the other 90% of teams are doing throughout the season. We don’t have 24/7 highlights anymore.
    Maybe sports betting makes up some of the gap. But the NBA needs to figure out how it wasn’t to redevelop storylines and player appeal at a league-wide level.
