I made a few yesterday. First I was a bit confused by the button knot, but after two or three trials, I managed to do it. It is rather easy once you've done it a few times.
Thanks for your helpful and informative video.

I have been taught to have separate channels for the final two passages through the knot. With the bury I doubt it matters much, though.
Very nice video. I appreciate the over the shoulder view.

It's not just aesthetic, it's practical. Burying the end stands increase the amount of material the noose bites on, and therefor the diameter of the loop, which means a more gentle bend a a less strength lost. It's one of the reasons why this type of button knot is stronger than the older diamond knot method.

This is the craziest way I've seen anyone ever tie a button knot, there are such easier ways that one can tie this knot. There are several tutorials on this site that demonstrate how to tie this knot in a much less convoluted fashion.

Made one last night. It turned out pretty well, even if I do say so myself. A friend just gifted me some 1/8" Amsteel (not fond of yellow, but hey free is free) and my next project is to make one of the clip button knots for my tree straps.

Pretty impressive button knot tying Jeff! I have done numerous whoopie slings, continuous loops and ridgelines out of 7/64th Amsteel. This looks more difficult but will give it a go. It seems like the sky is the limit with this material. :)

    • @jeffmyers7062

not sure what you mean ? how much length is needed? you have the knot and the bury...and I mention that in the video...

@@jeffmyers7062 I use the calculator on Animated Knots which is the Edwards calculation, set for a Diamond Knot. I know that the button knot takes more, both in the tying and in the bury but am unsure how much more. I am thinking approx. 10% more.

I always have problems with my noose ending up too large, even though I start with it very small. Not to the point where it slips off, but it doesn't feel like it's the optimal size.

even a 1 inch loop will never slip . A good rule of thumb is a 1 inch overlap of the two strands

Love your videos except this one. Really had a hard time tying the button knot. My opinion you spin the knot around way too much and trying to tie and orient at same time was difficult. Also slow the tying down. Remake would be great. Thanks for your efforts but I wound up cursing more than tying.
