Skooch, the reason why idols are expected to not be in relationships is so that their literally insane fans can project themselves as being in a relationship with them. This is *not a joke.* One of the major appeals of these idols is that they are not in real relationships so that way their fans can feel as though their idols "belong" to them and are "committed" to them. It's insane, it's sickening, it's disgusting, and it's pathetic. Imagine controlling someone's love life for a decade because it will help sell more albums and tickets. This is why idols will often try to date in secret, because if it gets out their futures are ruined

It wasn't like this in 90s(back than it was just some high school kids who got telent and company hired them) but ever since 00s things changed many kpop companies realized it is easier make normal kid who can moderately sing and dance to a star than i finding that one talented kid who is naturally gifted to become star out of million other kids.
We all know this is very harsh but most of korean people we say so what? Like it is just how world is. many people will say they are not the only people who work their ass off. And if they dont want to risk their life they can always just quit they don't really think much of people who fails at it as if there is someone who is succeeding there will be many who will fail because they are not the ONE .

In the late 2000s, early 2010s (basically before kpop was a huge international thing), you weren't allowed to like multiple groups. And that bled into early international fandoms, which is why being rabid and attacking people is so normalized.

most of us kpop fans know that there's problems within the industry and actively try and make them better(as much as fans can). along with choosing who we support carefully(because not every company is the same) and keeping up to date on all the changes in the kpop industry. you look here and you imagine everyone being treated like that(no one should be ever, just btw) but that's not the case. most of the problems in the industry are problems that grew from roots within korean society, because it is so conservative. as time moves forward and there's more of an audience outside of korea, our voice will start to matter more and more to the companies as well as the country slowly getting more progressive. there have already been improvements from when I started staning back in 2018. many things have to change, and we know that, but since when does standing back, not engaging, and just saying "thing bad" actually help change the systems that are hurting?

Children and Teenagers shouldn't be put in any "industry" Time and time again there has been evidence supporting how it brings eating disorders, anxiety and depression later in life. Fame will not cure any of it. Money will not pay for a life that will be stripped away the moment they are at the mercy of the public or their talent agent.
You know what sucks though? Want for fame is from a lack of attention and care as a child (and remains even in adulthood, we are social creatures that want love and belonging). They knew nothing of this hell. They were put there when they barely understood the concept of money. Or the concept of sunk cost fallacy. They were helpless from the start because these companies prey on kids.
You know why this is allowed? You know why this is normal? BTS is so successful internationally that they at some point managed to be responsible for 1/3 of South Korea's GDP. The whole country relies so much on their idols to keep their economy "healthy" So of course it's a big deal to normalize and capitalize their "number 1 product"
Whenever I think of Seraphines "made me this way" I don't think of a girl finding herself. I think of the millions of girls made to train, starve and dream that hard work will pay off someday and the people who told them it was okay.

As someone who's pretty knowledgeable about the industry and many artists from different companies, it's sadly unfortunate that most companies have such immensely strict, and even borderline inhumane practices. While being disciplined and hard-work is a must, it's certainly gets to a point where it can break down the artist's mentally and physically. Even if you're willing to go through hell to debut, I believe there are no excuses for it. For the most part, the articles chosen are accurate with what trainees and artists go through, but this is definitely not the case for every company. Some will be more lenient than others; giving more time to rest, being more open to allowing artists to seek mental help, work on their own music, being allowed to date, ect..The fans are aware of these issues, hence our support enhances further to see the groups and artists who've worked so hard to get to where they're at succeed.
Anywho, these types of stories are prevalent in so many other industries that I'd be unfortunate to be put off from discovering new talent and sounds. The good thing is that companies are improving, but they will never be perfect. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask!

If your planning on auditioning think again , and to be able to pass you need to learn to dance/sing/acting/ or have visuals basically you need to have a talents , if your lucky enough and they spotted you they will just ask you if your interested and give you their contact number , there's also lucky people like Ryujin who got escorted by JYP on a Got7's fan meeting.

We know we know we know we know we know this already. We have been thrown so many 'dark sides of kpop' videos our way enough times. We literally know the industry like the back of our hands. The reason why we stan certain groups so hard is to make up for that lost time they took training to be the idols they are today. Without support they fizzle out after 2 years their company disbands them and then what? There are bad companys there are good companys just like in the west. Things are changing, idols are calling out their companys for their mistreatment the 2 suicides that were publicized doesnt allow these companies to hide their malpractice anymore, this knowledge of shitty conditions is wide spread.
I will say though please do not lump BTS and bighit in with this fairly true sterotype their story is vastly different because their circumstances as a group and company was built from the group up. They created their own success.

The worst thing is that most people joining the companies are too young to actually think or know about the "dark" side. They can be easily exploited because they have a dream and with that age most trainees start with it is the responsibility of the parents to explain those things to their children and it is especially dangerous if they also don't know anything about it because once you're in it's too late in most cases while it's relatively easy to get into a company.
I as a K-Pop Fan myself can't agree with those things but it's also not a bad thing to support the artists who have suffered to come to that point.
Unfortunately there are enough people who agree on those circumstances because they're desperately craving for their dream so there will always be people who will do literally anything to achieve it.
But who didn't dream of being famous when they were young? It definitely needs some drastic regulations.

As a precursor to this comment: I like kpop groups. I like how good they are at performing, I love the multimillion dollar MVs (which is not true for the whole industry, thats just referring to the top tier like BTS, Twice, Blackpink, etc. Plenty of small companies struggle to put together a budget for an MV. They just have a better production value overall).
I'm not here to defend most of the stuff talked about here. Most of it is fair and, while somewhat cherry picked, there are a lot of fucked up things about the industry.
The weight obsession thing is fucked up. Celebrities are criticized for their weight across the world and companies obsess over their image all over the world. But it doesnt make it any better for kpop. And the companies forcing it on someone is fucked up, especially kids.
The Hyuna thing is fucked up. No one except the absolute crazies thought that made any sense.
The gay stuff, however horrible it is to tell someone "its not ok to be who you are," is FAR from confined to kpop in Korea. We still have our issues with LGBT rights in the west, but its nothing on Eastern cultures. Is it getting better? Sure. But actors, people in the military, people at work all face ostracization for coming out. Its just that kpop is no different, and if you're part of a group, in the company's eyes, youre going to bring the whole group down with you.
Same comes for the "half-Korean" comment. While it sounds fucked up to say that to a kid, the instructor was absolutely right about the acting thing.
The reason BTS came up for "kpop star small apartment" was because BTS' company was tiny and they had a shitty dorm when they started out.
Skooch's last line is true. Plenty of people would sacrifice a lot for their passion.
Idk how to end this comment. Its gonna get buried and get shit but. Just had to say it as someone who actually, you know, looks at this shit a lot and isnt just speaking as an outsider. I have friends who work as staff for some of these groups.

Since many do not value originality much, it is most profitable to create groups who fit visual idols almost perfectly, are capable to reliably produce mainstream content of sufficient quality and are not gay or ethnicly special. All that to have a very widesprea target audience. However, none of the three traits named are achieveable by normal means, creating the need for companies who by sheer force create people who fit those properties and arrange then in the most effective way. In effect, I would say this situation is not because of companies being evil(even though they are) but rather to us not valuing originality over quality of execution.

the worst thing is kpop companies only debut groups every new "generation" which is like 5-6 years or so. so if you get in as a trainee when you're 18, and a company debuts a group 4 years later for the new generation but you aren't chosen to debut you'd have to wait 5 more years to even get a chance. but by that time you'd be over 25 which many kpop idols are deemed to old to debut around that time. even if you do debut it isn't promised that you're gonna be successful unless you're from the top 3 companies. it's horrible and unethical tbh

The kpop star situation is just a expanded version of the Idol situation in japan. Personally I find it disgusting to treat anyone like this.
I do enjoy your honesty about fame hunting though. Personally I'm one of those that want to leave a lasting impact on the world but don't want to have my personal life ruined. It's why I have started using pseudonyms. I don't wanna be like a celebrity that has to disguise themselves. If I was a celebrity I would live like Dave Chappelle, dude lives local to me and is super chill. He wants to level with you as if he was anyone else and can't stand fanboys that come up for an autograph when he is talking to someone. Dude is super down to earth and wants to live like the rest of us.

That happens a lot when you decide to be a trainee in a small and unknown company sadly. But with big and known companies it really rarely happens, because if they're discovered, it gets shutdown, if it doesn't get shutdown for some reason, the bad reputation will lead the company to go bankrupt 100% of the time. Small and unknown companies have disgusting practices all over the world, not just korea, in america things like those don't happen as often, but what happens as often is sexual abuse, sexual harassment, threatening the artist's families between other things. The music industry isn't fair, it's corrupt, there's a dark side to every music industry, not just korea as many people make it out to be.
PS: Not being full korean doesn't matter if you're a trainee in a well known company, there are so many examples, there are kpop idols from Australia, United Kingdom, Brasil, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, Canada, United States, Senegal, I'm missing some but I don't have the patience to write them all and I don't know every group there is obviously.

this is coming from an ex kpop stan... and yeh i think most kpop stans (espc. the older ones) know about this. Also their suffering does not stop in the training once they become idols they go from photo shoot to promotion to filming to recording all in one day and in the same day they would sometimes have live performance (there are tones of clips of idols passing out on stage, collapsing etc.) once they become idols they basically sell their whole being to their company their private life is controled, they can even be denied to go to the hospital and to top it all off they would have sasaengs ( psychotic stalkers) AND haters who can go to extreme lengths such as telling an idol to shut up while they are talking, bomb threats, etc.
