Ok Mr OFG! I bought Grill Grates for my traeger. They are epic btw. On my new 850 timberline I heated to 400F and plopped on a few Chicago Steaks 1/4 lb sirloin burgers. 2 1/2 minutes per side. Added cheese and cooked additional minute. Boom! Juice fantastic. I also did Mediterranean marinate boneless chicken breasts. Boom! Juices excellent. I have to say your vid sealed my deal to buy one for $2,000 US plus $100 for grill grates and I’m a happy guy. Thank you. 👍🏼
I have been surfing the net for three decades and often it is to find a review on a product. I have always had problems with the way people give reviews and have never found someone that knew what they were doing when giving a review.... UNTIL NOW. Thank you for showing everyone else how a review is done, 10/10
I just came up on a timberline 850 for $300 on offer up. I couldn’t believe it the guy just wanted it gone asap as he had to do some construction in his back yard. I’m excited to get it running (gotta do a deep clean first). Cheers from Texas
Great Review, I have just bought one, I'm in Australia (southern) so we get cold winters (down to 0c) and very hot summers (up to 40c) so can't wait to use it all year round!
Well done sir. I came across a Traeger from the late 80’s about a year ago which sparked my interest in them. I’ve been on the fence about purchasing one ever since. Your genuine interest in this grill has sealed the deal for me. I’ll update after the first BBQ (hopefully in a few months). Also, anyone in SoCal in need of a Royal Gourmet propane/charcoal/smoker? I would prefer it to go to someone just getting their feet wet in the BBQ world.
Just bought the Traeger Timberline 850. It arrives Saturday and I plan to do a brisket and a few racks of ribs for family on Memorial Day. I bought it, in no small part, based upon recommendations like this one; an honest, uncompensated fellow old guy!
How are you liking the unit? I just ordered the same one yesterday as an upgrade to the Camp Chef smoke pro dlx that I've been using for the last two years.
Great video, entertaining, straight to the point, under 10 min, exactly what Ive been looking for in a review of the Traeger Timberline. Best non biased post review video I’ve seen so far. I look forward to watching more.
Thanks for the review. My friend has a Traeger and has been teasing me for a while with pictures of all the different food he had been making. I pulled the trigger and ordered a Traeger Ironwood 885 last week. I can’t wait to start Treagering. 😃👍
Excellent review that warranted the push of the subscribe button and a thumbs up. I've read the negative reviews on the traeger smokers on the website and they mainly deal with the same points you covered but you gave cogent reasons for the issues mentioned by the reviewers. Turns out they are not issues with the grill itself but ignorance of why they occur and how to use the grill properly. Traeger needs to really watch this video and beef up their responses to the negative comments because they're all covered here very well. Was on the fence before and was thinking of other grills, but this convinced me to pull the trigger.
Great review! Very easy to listen to. Quick question got you. I’m thinking of pulling the trigger on the Timberline. I’ve heard bad things about their customer service and also issues that do not get resolved due to the lack of good customer service. I’m scared to spend $1,800 on a dud that I simply continue to have issues with.
David thanks for your awesome and honest review since we know it wasn’t a paid gift that it is an honest review. I’m glad you said that this is an amazing fantastic smoker and if you gave it a thumbs up a great review I know it’s a great smoker.. I agree with you a huge company like that should not do an upgrade on a product without making 100% sure that it is without errors
Getting my 850 this weekend delivered. Can’t wait. Thanks for doing these Traeger reviews, and they helped me buy with confidence. It’s all about that winter cook, right?
Thanks for the kind words. I think you will love your 850. As for the winter cooks, all seasons are perfect! Let me know if I can answer any questions or be of any help.
Question. Why did you choose the Timberline 850 as opposed to the Itonwood 885? I am between the 2 models and I am not sure which to get. For the $700 difference, that’s a lot of meat I can smoke for that kind of money.
There were a couple of features I preferred about the Timberline but the biggest were the steadier temperature control and double walled cooking chamber as I live in the Canadian Rockies and do a lot of cold weather smoking.
I just discovered your channel and love it , you deliver great and hilarious content . I’m really happy to have found your channel, i just happened to be looking around on RUclips and your channel just popped up . I am now a fan and hope that you continue with your outstanding videos , keep em coming . All the way from California. I love your video’s!
I have the 855 Timberline and love it. Go big, you’ll find yourself cooking other stuff. I cook exclusively with cast iron and always have a couple of other things cooking. Try the Traeger recipes, I have yet to find anything bad. Good luck, blessings.
Look into a Rec Tec before buying a Traeger . Rec Tec much better made and you can sear with it , can't sear with a Traeger. Rec Tec customer service top notch, not so good with Traeger. Go look these things up before buying anything . Good Luck.
I got my 850 this past week in Toronto. I have an Ironwood 650 in Florida ....which we have now left behind for the summer. I christened the 850 with Ribs on Saturday and they were just plain excellent. Colder day - so I was counting on the heat retention. Still early days, but so far I’m looking forward to trying lotsa stuff on it.
I have been looking into both of those. Can't decide between the Ironwood 650 or Timberline 850. You see any major differences in either other than size? I hear the footprint is the same just the 850 is taller? I can't find a dealer close to me that has both in stock.
@@JimGrady67 There is the additional insulation in the Timberline, the double walls, etc. I did chicken in the cold wind the other day - and the temp held nicely (that's not a Florida problem). One additional rack for more cooking space. Footprint is the same - and yes, it's taller. I do miss the fold-down front shelf on the 850...strange - because you do need a place to rest a tray/dish/pan while transferring food to/from the grill. I think that's a miss. I bought the 850 because of the increased insulation for Canada, and the ⅓ more space. So far I'm happy with it. One last con - it was a LOT more expensive. My 850 includes the pellet sensor and a better storage bin for the probe. Not that either of those were worth the price difference. But again, I bought it for colder/windier conditions. Good luck with it.
Why did that lid just shift side to side when you opened it? Rec Tec's never vary more than 5 degrees when the lid is closed, but that is the difference between a PID controller versus the cheaper controllers Traegar uses. As well as no cold spots.
You want some small temperature variation over the length of the cook. 5° to an occasional 15° Is fine. I’m not going to get into details. Research if you curious. Do you think offsets run a constant temp?
I just received a Ironwood 650. I have had a GMG and a Z-Grill. My problem with the Ironwood is that there is no visible smoke. How can it smoke food if there is n smoke?
The trouble with all pellet smokers is they produce minimal smoke except at lower temperatures (under 225 F). At lower temperatures, they do a fair job of adding smoke flavour. At higher temperatures, they do give a slight flavour but not a lot.
Thanks for the review. Just purchased a 1300 at the home show (10% off show special) and will pick it up next week. I’m guessing that you could still use the grill while you were waiting for them to fix their software issues. Is that true?
The only time I couldn't use the grill for any length of time was when I needed to replace the auger and none were available for months due to covid snafus. Other than that, I have not been shut down by smaller problems like software updates.
I have had a Green Mountain pellet grill for 4 years and have struggled with grease/moisture dripping from the stack and lid. I'm looking into upgrading to the 850 and am wondering if you've encountered any grease problems with the Timberline? Thank you for the objective review!
I have been very happy with the grease management system of the Timberline. It is efficient and easy to clean. Also, it seems the air moves very well and I've had no dripping or condensation problems even cooking at low temperatures. I do make a point of cleaning on the regular schedule recommended by the unit.
Thank you, Mr. Old Fat Guy Cooking! I very much appreciate the time you spent on your unbiased review and your response! I think the Timberline 850 is what I'm going to go with. Cheers!
Both are very similar. The only difference is the 1300 is bigger. If you are going to be cooking for a small family, the 850 should be more than ample. If you are doing parties or have a large family, the 1300 is a big unit that makes a lot of food.
I hear your pain. They do have a fix now but I think they are behind in getting everybody fixed up. Have you tried leaving the unit on standby for a couple of days? It may update automatically.
