This is my mower. I watched you take the mower deck off before, I think. I had to change my belt, and your video helped me do that. I had to guess a little about the removal and replacement of the belt, back then. Watching this I see I did pretty close to what you did. Only thing is, when you pull the deck on the edge be careful because it can slide and fall. It did on me, and I fell, it fell on my ankle. And I limped around for a few days. You are very correct; the right belt is the way to go. On a different mower, I picked a belt at a hardware store. Measuring it like you did but it was a bit too long and slipped off often. Saying all that, I want to thank you so very much for your videos. They have been most useful to me.
Also make sure the width of the belt is correct as well. The parts guy gave me one 1/8th inch wider. It was a struggle until I got the correct width belt.
I frantically changed the belt yesterday and find this video today!!! I asked several for help and the mower is only two months old but the grass was not waiting for me to find someone! Wish I would of seen this beforehand but THANKS for all of the tips and places to check which I did not do.....I did not take the deck off and I did not loosen the two pulleys. I started with the drive pulley under the engine and shimmied the belt in, then I just put the belt around it's spots as in the diagram by just holding the belt and turning the pulleys then started it up and mowed for two hours....BUT NOW, I will be going and checking all of the things you mentioned, THANKS SO MUCH
I’m glad it will be helpful! Thank you for watching and the kind comment. Please give this video a like and share my channel with your friends to help it grow! It would be greatly appreciated:)
This video saves me every time my belt jumps off! I love my XT1 except for the belt coming off frequently. I haven't figured out why it keeps happening. This video and the one where you change the belt have helped me many, many times. One would think I'd be able to remove the deck in my sleep by now but every summer I have to go back and have you guide me through it again. Thanks for making my life a little easier 💗❤️
Just a guess, but, SLOWLY engage and disengage the belt at a SLOWER engine speed.... You don't want to just jam the belt engagement handle forward too fast OR release it too fast.... Following the above method, I have never had any belt breakage or jumping off in the four years of mowing so far....
@@ainttakenanyshit Thanks. I have been more careful about that since the belt started jumping off. Mower is in the shop now so I'm curious if they found a problem with the pulley or anything.

Thank you! I appreciate the time and effort you put into this video. There’s a 8+ week waitlist to get a mower serviced where I live. My mower’s belt broke last week and because of your tutorial, I , a middle aged woman who never took a small engine repair class in my life, was able to replace it!

Thanks for the video! The difference between the older Cubs (like my old LT1042) is pretty clear and it seems like MTD improved on a few things. For example, the belt keeper rod is way easier to remove and replace on the XT1 vs the LT1042, because on the 42 they made that bolt go in upside down with very little room to thread it back in so you’d have to balance it on an extension very carefully. Also, the clips to remove the deck from the deck raise mechanism is much easier too, before you’d have to pull a spring loaded hook on each side and it was a PITA to get it out. I don’t understand why they made the bottom nut on that pulley below the deck instead of under that pulley like the older Cubs though, might have been an engineering decision. But I will say the deck on the XT1 seems to be pretty solid. Edit: Also this video made me wonder why I haven’t bought an electric ratchet yet 🤔
Thank you so much! I’m a single mom that tries to do things for herself. I was a little intimidated by the deck removal but this was the perfect lesson, making the job go quite smoothly.

Today I tried to use the manual to remove the deck of my XT1. The manual used terms like flange lock nut and hex screw, not very useful. I think left and right idler pulley nuts would be better. Of course the manual didn't mention the spring attached the deck either so I thought I was done until the cable held my deck back. I unhooked the spring OK as well as the cable retainer and laid them on the ground. The manual said "loosen, but do not remove the flange lock nut on the right idler pulley and the hex screw on the left idler pulley". So I didn't know what "loosen" or flange lock nut meant until I watched your video. I guessed right but "guessing" is not my thing. I want to know. I left the belt around the idler pulleys after I removed the engine pulley keeper because I couldn't figure out how to get the belt past the retainers. Boy, you move fast and made an excellent video. I was so pleased to see that there was an easier way to remove/replace the clips than the crazy methods I was trying. I discovered I have a bent chafing (deck) wheel mount on the left rear so it's "hammer time" as well (Maybe I'll use a persuader instead, a good old Archimedes lever). The wheel is mounted on a welded bracket so I will need to bend it back so the wheel is aligned to the front wheel. My 7-tear old belt seems to be as good as new but it may have stretched so I'll compare it to a new one. It wouldn't hurt to replace it. I have done nothing to my tractor for 7 years so I cleaned and vacuumed the tractor and gave it a new Kohler fuel filter, a new air filter and pre-filter, oil filter, 2quarts of mobil synthetic oil, two new spark plugs and charged up the battery. It starts and runs great and soon it will have new mulching blades and a new deck belt. After 7 years I still got a flashing timer on the display to say everything was OK. Amazing! I'll follow the maintenance guidelines from now on. I didn't realize tat spark plugs are good for 500 hours. Of course a gap check (0.030" on myXT1) every year would be good. Thank you for a fantastic video. Now for my blade replacement. I think I'm going out tomorrow to buy one of those electric side socket tools, very handy and of course, much faster.
Glad to hear your machine is doing good! How many hours do you have on it? Thank you for watching my video, the kind comment and supporting my channel. Please share my channel with your friends to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated!
Good work, Is that deck adjustable like in your previous video's? Does the adjustable hangers that is on your site fit that machine? Thanks for the video.
Thank you! The last video was a Poulan made by AYP/Husqvarna and this Cub Cadet made by MTD. Two totally different manufacturers and the way they attach and adjust the deck. This Cub has both side’s are adjustable. I will make a video on how to level the mower deck on a XT1 for a future video.
Please pay attention to the very first comment he made about the OEM belt. I have now purchased three different belts trying to finish my rebuilt project, and have gotten the correct "same as" belt that has turned out to be the wrong size. One has been been too short, one has been too long
Excellent tutorial. You explained everything very well. Although I’ve done this with other mowers, it’s great to have one that is specific to my mower. Nice job.

I followed your instructions but unfortunately had the 46 inch Cub Cadet belt instead of the 50 inch what a difference now I know that my belt is 50 inch on my 46 LT Cub Cadet
Not sure what you mean? “Engagement cable feels loose” it should be loose when the blades are not engaged and it should be tight when the blades are engaged. If the cable is loose when the blades are engaged, you either have more deck problems or you purchased the incorrect belt.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Hmmm...thanks. The handle was firm before changing the belt. After, it is loose when going from disengaged to engaged, for about the first 1-2 inches of movement. I'm a total noob, so despite your very clear instructions, I may have done something wrong.
Great video. I have a 54 inch deck. Belt just started to fall off on me. It’s probably 15 years old lol. I don’t have nearly the belt guides as the one in the video. It seems the tension pulley may be a little higher that the rest of the pulleys. Everything is tight. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I’m putting a new belt on for sure I hope this solves my problem.
I ordered replacement blades from the Cub Cadet website, and they took almost a month to get to my house. I'll be trying to buy in-stock parts from my local store instead, in the future. It took more than 3 weeks before Cub Cadet even shipped the blades, it was ridiculous.
great video. i have to pull my deck. my blades don't disengage quickly when released. i just changed the blades. when i used it again, it felt like the blades were unbalanced and it was shimmying. when i turned it off, the blades wound down slowly. not sure if its the blade brake or just jumped a pully. need to pull it to find out.
I have a CC XT1 and was mowing today when I found a spring laying on the ground where I had already mowed. I thought it was the belt tension spring so I stopped mowing and drove it in the shop. Nothing missing, everything works fine. It's about the same diameter and color as the tension spring but looks shorter and has a double bend on one end. I have no idea where this spring goes and it's driving me crazy. But everything works so I guess I'll just run it till something quits. Any thoughts?
I work on all kinds of machines, not just Cub Cadets,so I would not know unless I could see the spring and the machine itself. I would suggest looking at the parts breakdown for the mower deck and the transmission drive, which is available online and see if you can find a spring on the parts breakdown that looks like what you have in your hand.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Thanks. I did find an exploded view of the deck and is definitionally not from there. I've never been around a hydro drive so I have no idea what's back there. I'll keep looking.
I'm glad it was helpful and hope all went good. Please give this video a thumbs up and share my channel to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated!

So how do I change the drive belt and why would it jump off of a 2 yr old mower anyway. family friend had to switch to paying someone to mow his yard because of this and there is no warrantee pr shop service for 30 minutes travel after you get someone with a winch and/or come along to load/transport it

bought mine last year. I did not have to touch the pullies. There is enough room to put the belt on without touching them, nor even pinch the belt. In fact, maybe mine has a bit too much room between the pully and the metal tab.

@brianm424 bought one of those universal belts. It said it was 46in, it wasn't. It was so tight it pulled the pulley into the blade on position. I just cut it off and got one from cub cadet store. After i put that on it fired right up.

Nice job.

Great job there young man and by the way do you have a video on the transmission belt replacement for a poluan XT mower and a John Deere lt 133 mower
Thanks Robert, I do not have videos on those two machines.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines okay thanks for the info on this matter young man 👍😎
Thank you for the video. Replaced my Dads belt on fathers day thanks to you. 👏🏻❤
That’s a good Father’s Day!! Glad to have helped! Thank you for watching and the kind comment.
Do you have instructions for the drive belt replacement?
Can the belt be changed with the deck left on the mower? I'm sure that it's easier with the deck off but I was just wondering.
Can you do a video on the left brake pad? Mine seems to be reversed
I followed your instructions but unfortunately had the 46 inch Cub Cadet belt instead of the 50 inch what a difference now I know that my belt is 50 inch on my 46 LT Cub Cadet
Thanks for this video! We've watched this video a couple times to help us. This time, the engagement cable feels loose. Do you have any idea why?
Not sure what you mean? “Engagement cable feels loose” it should be loose when the blades are not engaged and it should be tight when the blades are engaged. If the cable is loose when the blades are engaged, you either have more deck problems or you purchased the incorrect belt.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Hmmm...thanks. The handle was firm before changing the belt. After, it is loose when going from disengaged to engaged, for about the first 1-2 inches of movement. I'm a total noob, so despite your very clear instructions, I may have done something wrong.
Without being there it’s impossible for me to help much more. Double check everything and then try it. At this point there’s not much more you can do.
@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Thanks for troubleshooting with me.
Thank you for a great video. Do you or anyone else know if there is a tension adjustment on it ? Doesn't look like there is
The only tension on the belt is when you engage the mower deck. The spring is attached to the blade engagement cable.
Missing belt guides or bent pulleys are most issues with belts falling off.
I’m glad it was helpful. I hope all goes well and you figure out your issues! Thank you for watching and commenting.
@@JohnsonsSmallEnginesAfter many hours of searching the mower and the internet I found where this spring came from...the neighbors trampoline.
😲Glad you figured it out:) I had one when the kids were young and there are a lot of springs.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge

Well at least you have an Ole Man that Tried for you!!!
thank you so much , saved me money and time with a loose pully on my deck
I’m glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching and commenting.
Do you really have to remove the deck?
So how do I change the drive belt and why would it jump off of a 2 yr old mower anyway. family friend had to switch to paying someone to mow his yard because of this and there is no warrantee pr shop service for 30 minutes travel after you get someone with a winch and/or come along to load/transport it
Great video! Thank you!

bought mine last year. I did not have to touch the pullies. There is enough room to put the belt on without touching them, nor even pinch the belt. In fact, maybe mine has a bit too much room between the pully and the metal tab.
Thank you so much 🙏

Awesome! Thank you!
I have one of these that was made in 2015, with over 500 hours on it. It is by far the best riding mower I have ever owned except for the piece of sh*t seat!
I replaced mine and now it won't start. I think i accidentally engaged the blades. Now i gotta take it apart again.
Same here. Replaced it and now won't start. What do you mean you accidentally engaged the blades?
@brianm424 bought one of those universal belts. It said it was 46in, it wasn't. It was so tight it pulled the pulley into the blade on position. I just cut it off and got one from cub cadet store. After i put that on it fired right up.
