Sad thing, but one day I figured out on my own, how to take the winding wheel apart. Then a few days later, you show how you take them apart. It's great for others to have a name put on the parts incase they need to try to order the parts they need. Interesting history about the bird.
Yes I do these videos from my experience and I dont want others to have to go through what I had to go through. I have a fairly good memory when it comes to repeating my work where others not so much. So I try to help people out as much as I can. Plus I have had people ask me to do a video showing all the parts and explaining what the parts do. As far as the bird history that has taken me a few clocks that I have bought and I pick up on other things. Plus there is a picture from a book in the Featured items that goes over the evolution of the cuckoo bird. My opening statement when I created my group page talks about history. It also says that unless there is a date, name, signature, etc., or a receipt then I dont feel that dating a cuckoo clock can be that accurate. I point out that the cuckoo clock repair guide says that one of the first things that they did away with was the articulation of the wings but there are BEHA clocks that the birds didnt have articulated wings. Kevin Lacke whom created the Cuckoo Clocks and all things Black Forest group whom I took over as administrator on his death bed had a BEHA cuckoo clock where the bird didnt have articulated wings. I have one Russian cuckoo clock that I bought awhile back for $40 total off market place that came with a bunch of weights. They are mostly cheaply made to include the movement. The count wheel is almost tin like metal. The bird has a rod that comes out of its tail. Check out the Russian cuckoo clocks for sale and you will notice the same thing. The front of the clock is screwed and has brackets to the main housing of the clocks. In my opinion they are cheaply made. Nothing like all other made cuckoo clocks.
Thank you Mark I will try to find them I’m not a clock repair person but my girlfriends clock has broken down the chain round the gear just turns freely the ratchet mechanism has broken , I’m currently waiting for the part , all the very best from Peter
Peter sorry to hear about your girlfriends clock. Some of the ratchet wheels/great wheels can be repaired easily then there are some that it is better to buy a new one. I have videos on repairing ratchet wheels. All you have to do once you are on my channel is search for key words such as ratchet. Hope this helps.
I bought the Willim J. Bilgers "The Cuckoo Clock Repair Manual 3rd Enlarged Edition". It has some good information in it but I dont like the book it isnt easy to follow. Others use Karl Kockmanns "The Black Forest Cuckoo Clock". Again has some good information in it. I havent read it all the way. The NAWCC says there are several errors in the book. I feel my you tube channel is probably your better bet. I have a series on "Repairing Cuckoo Clocks for Beginners" I got through several videos explaining several things. Then there is JustMike (Michael Andersons) you tube channel. Between the two of us I dont think that you could go wrong. Then I would suggest joining the two FB groups that I am the admin for. Here is a group that I took over for a friend upon his death bed. It mainly deals with just Cuckoo Clocks and all things Black Forest.
