Repairing an antique grandfather clock made by Benjamin Gray of Loughborough England Part 3 of 3

In this video I finally get the clock up and running to the point where I have to stop until it cools down because currently it is over 90* in my house. I made a rookie mistake of putting the rope on wrong and that caused several hours of wasted time.
Is your cuckoo clock making a noise? Then the pallets on the verge assembly might need some oil.

In this video I am explaining how to lubricate the verge pallets on the verge and crutch assembly of a cuckoo clock. There could be other things wrong with your clock which is causing a noise but it could be as simple as the pallets need a drop of oil to lubricate the escapement wheel.

So if you were driving 70 mph and go into town if you accidently hit the resume button your vehicle will resume to that speed again. So be aware of how...

    Hi mark, really appreciate the cost effectiveness of the equipment you use so unlike everything in the world that needs to be specialised, bigger, more particular to a single job and needless to say has a trail of a bill to follow. Keeping things simple, cheerful and cheap calls for accolades

    • @munnerlyn3
      @munnerlyn3 3 часа назад

      I believe in showing people how to do a job at the cheapest way possible. Too many people dive deep into purchasing tools and equipment for a job that they think they will do for awhile but things happen and they end of selling their tools/equipment or even giving those items away. I dove deep into the farrier business (shoeing horses) but later had to quit for medical reasons after 6 years. So I dont want people to go out and buy expensive tools right away. If they decide that repairing clocks is what they want to do for the rest of their life and when they can afford to purchase a tool that will make their life simpler then yes purchase it but until then keep it simple. Thanks for watching.

    Hello. I have a Hunter series clock and the Pinecones (weights) on it have the number 44 stamped on them. I put them on a scale and they registered 1140 grams a piece. The movement is Regula 34/M obvious 8 day. This is a virgin clock. it hung on my step monsters wall for years and years on end and my step sister gave it to me a whole lot of decades later in a box of pieces. Well, Back to the weights, I left the pendulum as it was all it's life and the clock runs extremely slow to the tune of losing 5 minutes per hour roughly. I adjusted the leaf so far up on the pendulum you can barely even see it below the case anymore. I know I am going to have to do a complete repair of the movement. It sat for a very long time in a nicotine/smoke filled house and collected decades of dust. I cleaned it the best I could and it does run but not all that well. Are these weights ok for this clock? Think they will be ok to run on it once I get the movement back in order if it is at all possible without buying a new one? I really hate to start parting it out other than the bellows. They were literally gone as expected. I really enjoy your videos. I typically do not work on clocks at all but since I got mine I have a fascination with them now. Anyhow, take care and I hope all is as well as can be your way!

    • @munnerlyn3
      @munnerlyn3 День назад

      Sounds like the movement needs cleaned. Pivot holes cleaned out with tooth picks. Movement put back together and fresh oil. Per Dr Lloyds and Karl Kochmans book the Regula 34 without music takes a set of 1100 gr weights. However per the Cuckoo Clock Repair Manual by William J Bilger a Regula 34 without music takes a set of 1250 gr weights and with music 1500 gr weight. Most people use 1500 gr weights on 8 day cuckoo clock movements. But if it has the original weights then they should work. Check for bushing wear. 8 day clocks because of the extra gears in them cant have bushing wear as that will stop the clock. Again with you having the bob all the way up and it still losing time then it sounds like the movement needs cleaned. Good luck. You can find me on Facebook for further questions. My current profile picture is a drawing that a veteran did while I was at the VA. Thanks for watching.

You are supposed to use One dip product on them. Even if you are talking about the hair spring or balance wheel escapement then same thing. One dip. Some people use alcohol but One dip is the preferred method. Hope this helps. Good luck.

      Try bending the crutch wire which is the wire that comes out of the movement in the middle between where it comes out of the movement and the bottom. Typically that allows it to swing back and forth. Be sure that all the wheels to include the verge and crutch assembly have end shake. Watch the following video where I discuss end shake. When did you start broaching the bushing hole from both sides of the plate? I thouht you only did that from the inside. Then the hole is tapered and the bushing won't come out when you have to broach it afterwards.When you press the bushing into the tapered hole, the friction will keep it there better.

    • @cheryladair732
      @cheryladair732 12 дней назад

      And that plate is massive. Love the fancy posts. What's it from?

    • @munnerlyn3
      @munnerlyn3 12 дней назад

      Cutting broaches are tapered. So you broach both sides of the plate as a round bushing is hard to put into a tapered hole. Especially when the plates are thick as in this clock or other antique clocks. That is why it is important to mark your cutting broach and only go in so far. That way you have the same size hole all the way down. Thanks for watching. God bless.

      This movement is from my antique grandfather clock that I got in England for the price of a garden shed. It was looked at on 3 different occasions. Once when I hired someone to redo the dial. The other 2 times when I had it appraised for insurance purposes. All 3 times by professional clock repair folks. All 3 times they told me that it was made around 1780. Then I joined a grandfather clock group and was showing the clock off and some folks in the group said that it wasnt made in 1780 but more like between 1800-1850. I think that I will stick with the 3 original peoples estimates as I knew them.

    • @munnerlyn3
      @munnerlyn3 12 дней назад

      reamers are designed to take out the tapered section at the very end but you use one tool vs using cutting broaches where you have to go from a small broach to the next to the next, etc.,. Reamers are easier to use the cutting broaches when installing bushings. The very first video that I posted on using cutting broaches to put bushings in I had a lot of negative comments saying that you cant use cutting broaches to put bushings in because of what you just mentioned. But if you broach both sides then yes you can and that is how Bruce Rassumessen, a master clock maker, instructs in his video on "General Clock Repair'.

    The video I watched also said to use the end of the drill bit because it's the right size and strong as well. They also used the Red Lock tight. You need to stop worrying about the complainers and just do what you do for the ones that are not professionals either. Thanks for the shout-outs Mark. God Bless.

    You need to buy yourself a extremal Storage for all your videos so you don't plug up and slow down your laptop. I didn't think too much about Clip Champ and I am starting to think my editing program, Corel-Video Studio Ultimate has some things going on with it also. As we work on the clocks and have to make a piece, you and we are all learning what needs to be done. Second opinions are for you really know what is wrong maybe, but you still need to bounce it off of someone so you can think out loud and listen to yourself, lol. Been there, done that. Thanks for the verbal shout-out and shout-out at the end. God Bless.

      at the end of this video I show you the GPS coordinates. All you have to do is type in those coordinates to your GPS and it should take you right there. Thanks for watching. I have other places to see in the area such as Hunters Cave which is just outside Grandin Missouri in the town of Hunter on E highway. I give directions to most of the places that I visit/post videos to. It is in a folder on my channel called "Places to see in my area". I hope that you subscribed to my channel which is mainly showing you how to repair your clocks.

    Thank you for this video, do you bend the entire arm or just the little tab on the top? Also have you ever seen one of the little wings the minute arbor worn more than the other?

    • @munnerlyn3
      @munnerlyn3 19 дней назад

      First the tabs or some people call them shark fins on the minute arbor will be two different sizes. One for the half hour so it just raises the lift lock lever and the other for the hour where the lift lock lever raises to raise the rack stop lever. Second if your clock isnt cuckooing on the half hour then it could be the lift lock lever arms have got bent and I try to bend the tab first but typically I end up spreading the arms apart just slightly so on the half hour it raises enough to get the 3rd wheel warning pin out of the way of the tab that goes through the movement. If you bend them too much then the lift lock lever raises the rack stop lever too much on the hour. I have a video on the Cuckoo Clock for Beginner series folder that discusses parts of a clock. Check that out. Hope it helps.

    That's what I was worried about when you threw jars out there for them. They maybe got in someone's trash. I'm glad you saw that one and were able to help.

    • @munnerlyn3
      @munnerlyn3 21 день назад

      Yeah I dont buy small mouth jars of peanut butter. I eat too much and feed them too much to buy the small jars. LOL. He/she was very calm and allowed me to take the jar off that was very clean. Not a spot of anything inside of it. That is what it lived on for the time it had the jar on its head. When the jar came off in which I was holding it with my bare left hand and pulled the jar off with my bare right hand it didnt fuss or anything. It was very thankful I feel. I would hate to see it suffer from starvation because of a stupid jar on its head. Hopefully it learned its lesson. If it walked around and got the jar stuck between a couple of limbs it could have got the jar off. Surprised it didnt. Thanks for watching. May God bless you and yours.

    So I did mine different but it is holding well. I pinged the barrel to hold the original spring hook in place. Thanks for your video and the NAWCC video. It looks much easier this way than how I did it. Also fitting something inside the barrel was good to see. I struggled with that also.

    I have 3 german wall clocks my grandmother's mom owned. Im pretty sure 2 of them are pre 1900s and the other is around 1910. One is on my wall working just fine. The other two work too but one of those is missing a little screw no longer than an 8th of an inch and I'm not sure which one it came from. Is there a website where I could possibly order spare parts if needed? Thank you.

    If you have a triple chime clock basically you would watch for the hammers to play 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. That is the quarter past on Whittington and St.Michaels. Westminister is 4-3-2-1 thats how its playing from the Front to the rear with the rear hammer being 1 and the front being 4 playing down 4-3-2-1.

    • @munnerlyn3

    I am having trouble with getting the man with ax to work. I dont see where the wire should be hooked for it to work

    • @munnerlyn3
      @munnerlyn3 23 дня назад

      The wire that goes to the wood chopper goes through the slot and on top of the wire that goes from the left case toward the right case as that is a spring then it catches what looks like an 8 point star wheel which those points is what makes him chop wood. Search for Schmeckenbecher woodsman cuckoo clocks on ebay and you will find plenty of them to see pictures. Here is one. Hope it helps. www.ebay.com/itm/126569446047?itmmeta=01J2FSTZ9WRTFRXH7MMRGB2JHT&hash=item1d78207a9f:g:BK8AAOSwnGJmjgfW&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8PRImzj%2BaUkvLGfTbj7n8mLNAcJnBgATp52bIssrXH%2FtW6dGToWvUVHHWrKASC%2FVsKp%2BSv2fUGFY5hT1dMoc9bhTZazs9h2NPg5pCcwWiLuj2lJJGG1YoNNL%2FBbcRUly5T0ms4yC%2Fy%2FWKSiWDPUgU5NJc4fCu6qYdjlwg%2FQ%2Bv18efpSL%2BnaZgSaaPpDpW%2B%2FV4%2BHt7mPyPNorJw9dn8Lm2FPCLQQg9%2BzanSk5Yu72We2UNzsgs9XAoA4Z%2F36xvrIxqAeemi2i4b6jTHg%2B0tFqweWTHdXwQ0RKmo5FvUYaCeFk6W86%2F3aUEhHccs2n4Tjw2g%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_706_mTZA

    I need to redo my lift wires. I acquired my clock from my step mothers collection of treasures and it was in a box of nothing but pieces and parts. I spent the better part of a summer putting it all back together and very carefully removing 40 years of cigarette smoke and nicotine and dust from it as well. YUCK! The movement is in very bad shape but does work when it wants to. It is a Regula and stamped 34/M I believe. It is 34/something. I put new lift wires in it not knowing what I was doing and this video has helped me understand where I went terribly wrong. It does work but not as it should. I get half a chirp from the bird at times, sometimes the gong will miss a tone and other times the door will not close for a cycle and will close on the next. I know that is not all life wires but if I showed you the lift wires you would just SYDH and cringe. I am a partially disabled industrial painter, not a cuckologist. lol Thanks for sharing this. I appreciate it.

      If you send me a message on Facebook (my profile picture is a drawing that a veteran drew while I was at the VA) Mark Munnerlyn. Then if you are up for it we can video chat and I can help you with your clock more. The 34 identifies it as an 8 day clock. In 1970 Regula started using a date code after the 25, 34, etc., They either used a 2 digit number for the year such as 70 or a letter code. A was the first letter they used and it is good for 20 years so the letter "A" is for 1970, 1990, 2010, 2030, etc. The letter "M" is for 1980, 2000, 2020, etc.,. They didnt use some letters such as "i, o, and the letter y".
