- Cynthia plays Cynthia! I always envisioned that Cynthia was the one playing the epic piano music before her battle - with the Year of Sinnoh, I figured it was time to make that vision a reality, with the help of @Kara Comparetto!

Cynthia is my all-time favorite Pokémon Champion. She is a total badass, and holds, in my personal opinion, the hardest team to beat in a Champion battle in any Pokémon game. To me, her character is so well-developed, and is also one of the most interesting and lore-intertwined Champions in any Pokémon game. I could keep gushing about Cynthia for so long, but I’ll stop there, haha!
I knew that for the Year of Sinnoh, I’d have to dedicate a significant amount of music to Cynthia. I had already arranged Cynthia’s Battle Theme back in 2016, but had never really done anything good for the piano music before her battle! I decided to tackle this piece of piano music, which is one of my favorite pieces of music in all of Sinnoh in 2 parts, this being the first part! I was very inspired by Rachmaninoff’s Prelude in C# Minor for this piece, and wanted to arrange the pre-battle music in a way that was very much a prelude, using the same melodic and harmonic material as the super fast piano music, but performed slower and more introspectively. With that inspiration, this arrangement popped out! I am very very happy with this piece of music, and I think it works as part of a greater whole to pay tribute to the awesomeness of Champion Cynthia.
Kara and I met at PAX East 2019, and reconnected at MAGFest 2020! I had known her primarily through her great Instagram piano videos and Twitch streams, and thought it would be awesome to make a video with her! When the idea to create a solo piano piece based on Cynthia’s piano intro music, I thought Kara was the perfect person to pull this off. I did take classical piano lessons for a while as a kid, but Kara is much more skilled then I am in this world of classical piano, and she pulled off this piece so well. PLUS, she actually offered to do a cosplay of Champion Cynthia, which turned out to be so freakin cool. We filmed this video together back in February of 2020, and had a blast doing it! It’s always fun getting to do in-person collaborations; they always generate the best memories! I think the take that we ended up using in the final video was take 4, though I used camera angles from previous takes to round out the video.I’m so lucky to be able to do in-person collaborations with great musical talents, and I can’t wait for the days when we can do those collaborations again!
Stay tuned for Part II! If you were a bit disappointed by the slow tempo of Part I, I think you’ll be quite pleased by what Part II has to offer!

Cynthia early game: "Hello I'm Cynthia, just a normal trainer."
Cynthia end game: "sike"
She is a normal trainer. She just happens to be really good at it.
Really good at it
She's a normal just like the player character.
Exactly. The encounter theme explains how i felt: in a turntable, like in a sad mute '90 movie, where the protagonist see his beloved stolen by the antagonist. By time, this feeling faded as long as i lost my Nintendo, but when i listen to the theme it kinda resembles me how i felt. Betrayed.
Cynthia: “It was I all along!”
Me: *suprised Pikachu*
Alternate title: When you enter the wrong house in Undella Town
I guess I'll go looking for items, enters the house to encounter the physical embodiment of death, struggle, anxiety, and fear.
You really like beating a dead horse do ya?
Me after beating the unova elite four: No fear
Enters a house in undella town:
ONE FEAR
Me: *enters the wrong house*
Cynthia: oh, i see you've chosen *death*
YOU PICKED THE WRONG HOUSE FOOL
This is probably my favorite Rachmaninoff prelude.
Prelude in Platinum
I was gonna say Chopin but yeah, pretty much 🤣
@@samuelwnovak And I was gonna say Beethoven lmao, guess it's really a mix of all three. Imo the original is definitely Beethoven, it's such an intense, almost angry piece.
@@babyjiren9676 imo, that's exactly why it sounds like Rachmaninoff ^^
@@nenrikido2903 Fair enough lol, I guess it’s because I’ve personally listened to more Beethoven than Rachmaninoff. I always thought the original sounded quite similar to the appassionata
See, Cynthia's cultured.

That prelude is still the most goosebump-inducing piece in the Pokemon series for me.
Me too
It is such an insanely well composed piece, and it comes right before one of the toughest region champions, and the character you saw throughout the story helping you out, not knowing who she truly was. Such an iconic character.
Edit: Oh and she's hot, so ya know.
Cynthia was like Lance in first Johto Games: a living travelling legend. I think I will close my Pokemon games experience when I'll see her again in the future remakes.
@@TheKingFlurry Speriamo di no
One of the toughest? The freaking toughest region champion!!
The only woman that make me cry twice besides my mom!
Cynthia is the best Champion out of all Pokémon games.
I confirm this :D
Peter is the best imo :3
Well what about Steven?
Die Zauberküche he’s 2nd best
styles I can also confirm this
From my point of view, Cythia is one of the more well written characters in Pokemon, I like her whole concept as a character and how she helps you throughout the story in gen 4.
The fact that you basically fight her as the final boss to end the game was perfect.
i mean your not wrong, but lance and steven are like that aswell
Ikr... I mean, icr whether it was ever mentioned that she was the champion, but I know for sure that I was clueless until I fought her
Just Some Guy without a Mustache also best theme
Lance mentions it and Steven never mentioned it. Emerald was so nice for this since it was like Wallace is champion and then steven is in a cave just chilling like oh yeah sure i guess we can fight. and then he ends up being way stronger. Such a fitting character.
I dont like Lance though. He doesnt live up to the levels of Cynthia or Steven

Long hair? An interest in meeting god (or becoming one)? Will kill you before you realise they're even there?
Yup.
Don't compare that emotionless mama's boy to her.
My dm added Cynthia combined with Sephiroth (I call her Cynthiaroth) to our campaign recently.

The best part is that the game it self made sure to compliment her words. Battling her was the most difficult task of the game. So those words are true to a very real degree. Once i beat her I felt so accomplished.
I’ve always loved this theme. Part of what made Cynthia so cool/intimidating imo. Amazingly romantic rendition.
To be honest I prefer yours and the original. Not a big fan of the romanticism

Oh no
@@Vyz3r That explains a lot!
Cynthia l33t h4x0r comfirmed
But I loved the challenge, even back then, I was always so proud of myself after beating her (even after 10 runs through the elite four) :D
Though i couldn't find any real confirmation for this (the best was a small note in the Trivia section for Cynthia's Garchomp on Bulbapedia, alongside some forum posts none of which give any evidence)
It definitely _feels_ true though, considering the amount of butt-whooping everyone got :D
@@SillyTalent2 I don't remember the link, but I got the information from GBAtemp's hacker community. Also, I've never tried it on Cynthia, but there's a cheat tool that enables you to capture NPC trainers' pokemon that copies everything including their stats and moves (minus the trainer name, of course). That's one way to verify it yourself.
I found Cynthia's Lucario a bastard. Spammed me with Earthquake and was somehow faster than my Staraptor, who's my go-to PKMN against fighting types! Her Roserade was the weakest of the team. Spiritomb, as much as a jerk ass move to have a Legendary PKMN, he was easily dealt with by my Haunter. Gastrodon can be beaten by a really good grass type to counter the water-ground strength. Then give Milotic a good shocking with an electric type, I had Luxray face her, Garchomp faced my own Legendary PKMN Palkia. Somewhat easy picking. I hated Lucario.
I like how this rendition of the theme is filled with an array of emotions. Pain, melancholy, grief, joy, frustration; it almost feels like in this version Cynthia is telling you that you have to be stronger than all of the pain she has had to overcome in order to beat her. I love every bit of this.
That's exactly what I was going for :)
WooIn Louie YANG The games never really talk about or imply how long the trainer has been on a journey, and you do beat a national crime organization too.

This is giving me chills. And I remember how confused I was when I had to keep going after I beat the Elite Four into one more battle. It was insane but eventually I did it with my Torterra and Staraptor. And maybe Luxray was there too? But the main one fit to fight was Torterra. My poor innocent 9 year old self, not knowing that one of the most powerful trainers in the series was waiting to beat me down after I thought I won. I wasn't the only one who didn't know the champion was a thing, right?
The Elite.... five???
I also had NO IDEA that there would be a fifth battle while playing it!
Diamond was my first Pokémon game so I had no idea what to expect. And I remember LOSING MY LITERAL SHIT when walked into that room and Cynthia was there. 10 year old me was mind blown by that twist (even though many Pokémon games have done it). I thought she was just a cool helpful NPC. nope.
I was there, 3000 years ago in 1998. 1st pokemon game. They did the SAME trick and I lost so badly. Elite 5, not Elite 4
@@Psylent Oof
The piano persists through generations.
Volo had pure orchestra, Cynthia had Orchestra and synth
I love it.
Such a beutiful and intimidating track
I've never heard a such emotional rendition of this song before. Cynthia's encounter theme is almost always forget by artists who covers her fight theme, which is very sad considering how great the original is. And most of the covers I've found before did not match the 40 seconds of piano that precede the wonderful Cynthia battle. The original is fast and make you feel this is your last battle, fighting for the title of the best trainer in Sinnoh.
But you and Kara managed to create this masterpiece. I didn't have the words the first time I listened to it. Only tears. This slow version really fits to Cynthia. She is not in the same world as you, she don't live with simple mortals. She only focuses on legendary Pokémons of time and space, because she is somehow a goddess. You see her multiple times during the game, but she does not interfere. Even in the Distorsion World in Platinum, she could have beaten Cyrus easily, but she didn't do anything. And this is even more representative in HGSS, when she only speaks to you after bringing her Arceus, the Pokémon god himself.
I can easily imagine her playing this theme all day long, watching over humans and Pokémons, waiting for someone, who is better than most of his kind, in Pokémon battles as in his personality, to fight, and defeat her. And with this cover, Kara and you defeated her, entering the Hall of Fame.
Thank you for this beautiful song.
Un Phoque I l’m a huge fan of this version. You really do get lost in her playing. I really like how the song has been written with the intention for it to be played slower with more time in between each section to take in everything she’s throwing at you. The only video I’ve seen where the player matches the tempo to a tee is Marasy8’s performance.
....yeah!! it's easy to forget sometimes, that she went through the same torture of being forced to study so intensely that it drove *Cyrus* insane!! he wanted no emotions at all in the entire universe, because his were so out of whack! but Cynthia... maybe she's colder than we assume. she did grow up in the bitter, unforgiving snow and dismal mountain fogs of Sinnoh! but, it is also mentioned in the games that she keeps her room messy...maybe she has some form of depression, or something more extreme. who knows? it's interesting to speculate. Cynthia, somehow, is one of the greatest characters of all time. and you barely even encounter her. it just *works.* all of the subtext makes her believable as this immovable force!!
something that's interesting about her, is that she seems to have different personalities almost-- depending on the situation...like, one moment she'll be acting kinda ditzy and enjoying some delicious ice cream, and the next she'll be wrecking your shit with absolutely no care or emotion at all. it reminds me a little of me and my sister... as a kid, we were forced (and still are, as young adults...) into horrible situations... I don't even want to describe what's happened to us over the years (and what *hasn't...* we've missed a lot of life that most people don't even think about I'll bet). Cynthia is a boss I never beat as a kid...my first pokemon ever, PiPyLiK the infernape (I could only read in certain circumstances due to multiple personalities, so his name is a lil maclunky haha), was my best friend. my older sister, who reminds me deeply of Cynthia, beat her with empoleon. she deleted my save file while I was still trying to beat the champion (and the fact that I got to her with a lvl63 infernape with cut still on is incredible)-- and I've never gotten over that experience... I spent many long, dark, lonely nights in our disgustingly ruined house...just fighting Cynthia, over and over again...
to this day, the theme haunts me deeply, and represents barriers in my mind that I cannot ever seem to cross...I loved that infernape as a friend, truly. and she just deleted him from existence, when I told her not to. I begged her. I gave her my diamond because my dad gave her whatever she wanted, and I had to give up most of my DS games to her... eventually, I wanted to borrow one of her games so badly (and what else was there to do, really?) that I offered her my diamond for ALL of her games except pearl.
I went out to dinner without her, and she immediately deleted the save.
I'll never forget that. I've lost so many people, and so many animals...but PiPyLiK was one of them, too. when people are truly, truly lonely...they will make friends with anything, and give their own heart and soul to a doll or a machine as a mirror of sorts. it gives that love back, when nobody else will.
... um, so anyways--
and Kara NAILED that attitude and grace!! what a queen!!!!! :D

Man, as a long time Sinnoh fan, this non-stop Sinnoh content has been amazing. I really appreciate you making this stuff, it brings a great deal of enjoyment and nostalgia.
❤ This is exquisite... Better than the original. It's beautifully haunting. You're extremely talented! 🙂
I would like to think this theme has reached the point where it can be added in the great video game song book and that the sheets will eventually be passed on all illegal style by the man in the truck aka Patrick Bartley.
P.s. also not what I expected from this theme going into the year of sinnoh but it was a nice surprise
Haha, seems like you saw the 8 bit big band stream last night...
This arrangement is so hauntingly beautiful! Not only does it make the piece more feasible for live playing, but it also creates a completely new feeling of darkness and fate; it's like you mixed Pokemon with Final Fantasy, and I love it!
There better be a Low HP Remix of her actual theme, Carlos!
As if you ever have low HP with Cynthia! She sweeps your team so bad that your Pokemon faint before they can even be left in the red!

I never would've thought Cynthia can also play piano. She's so talented
This song makes me really reflect on my past, it brings those emotions to the table upfront at know, I really appreciate all your videos, I never comment much but I've been watching you since I was 16, I'm 22 now, Iove how much you've evolved over the years with your editing, your arranging and skill altogether, thank you
I can’t tell if it’s coincidence or deliberate, but she’s almost the spitting image of the actual champion.

This arrangement and performance are absolutely astounding! I’m at a loss for words!
It’s a shame that not many appreciate all that VGM has to offer. If you were to take this arrangement and show it to someone who has no idea what Pokémon is, I’m confident that they would assume it’s a classical piece. The fact that you can craft something like this off of a little Nintendo DS game from 2007 is testimony to the true potential of VGM!
And, of course, that was one heck of a performance! Incredibly moving!
A) It's excellent, B) it's a lot of fun to watch her play
This is such a mean tease (but still outstanding)

I have this image of us, the player, ascending a massive tower, a long spiral staircase that leads to the champion’s room. As we go up, we hear this faintly coming down. As much as I can appreciate this rearrengement of the "Piano before Cynthia", the work put in it and even imagine it as the prelude to a grandiose piece, the fact remains that compared to the orginal, with its vivid vision of a pianist losing his sanity and the use of his hands in his dreadful, yet also beautiful performance, this is incredibly lackluster. In the description, you talked about performing more slowly and more introspectively and it could've resulted in something interesting had this kept the original version's tortured and melancholic aspect, instead of being inconsistent because of intruders like optimism and gentleness being sprinkled here and there, during the time of a note or a few. I even tried, after listening to it a first time, listening to it a second time but as a prelude to the original, thinking it could, somehow, enhance the experience, to no avail. Here's hoping that part 2 will inspire me to type a more indulgent comment than this one...
This... Why this speaks to my soul, i'll never know but this... Is pure talent!
Biggest mistake my 12 YO self did back in 2011 was walking in the damn house
Nice Cynthia Cosplay, Carlos. You nailed the makeup and black dress as well as her piano style down. 10/10 Best Insaneintherain Video
I had to work so hard to fit into that costume
