Hi everyone, this video covers everything I could work out about the camera in my time with it. I already have a LUMIX S9 beginner's guide and tutorial scheduled for the next few days, so stay tuned. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I will reply ASAP! Thanks for watching! Links to the camera and time stamps are in the description. 😄
There is a Sirui grip listed which looks bigger -- it's the one I'd go for. I had a GX9 with the JJC grip, and it still wasn't enough with a larger lens.
Thanks, Dave! It was awesome meeting you too. I didn't love the lack of a grip at the start, but I ended up really enjoying it for travel stuff as well. It was awesome hanging out man! :)
I don't really care about this cam (MFT user here) but I do want to give you HUGE congrats for this Pani junket. I do hope that Panisonic develops a small MFT body like this new S9. Cheers mate!
Many thanks! This trip was a whole lot of fun, and it was a fun challenge to try and shoot the entire video during the time we had there. I think this could be a good sign of what's to come for M43 at some point (ringers crossed!)
Love your guitar content Shane, I didn't even know you had an alter ego :) Cool camera, thank you for your insights. I would definitely be more interested in the Lumix s5II, but I can see how the S9 would be a nice travel camera. As an FYI, Canon has the EOS R8 FF camera which has more of a focus ergonomics in terms of grip and is currently priced less, even with a kit lens.
Were You able to use any Panasonic Lenses with this S9 besides the 20-60mm? I interchange with adapters all kind of lenses between different camera systems. 26mm f/8 Pancake Lens is interesting but I wish it was a f.2.8. Cheers! PS If I just watch your video to the end then I wouldn't be asking about having any other lenses with you. 18mm and the 100mm are probably the next two lens purchases for me.
Without the viewfinder you have to deal with sun glare on the screen and on bright sunny days it can get a bit aggravating. A sun hood over the screen will help but I really wished Panasonic would add the viewfinder 😮😢
The more I see the more this looks like a great little camera. Does the MP4 lite look materally different if you're shooting with something similar on a S5iix ? To mix in B roll?
It's the same sensor so in the same modes, it will look the same. The Mp4 lite option is the one to choose for transferring files to a phone. For b-roll just use Mp4 or Mov. :)
Do I have to go into the menu to switch AF on and off. Also do I have to go into the menu to switch from photo to video and the 3 modes I can see on the dial
Autofocus is on by default. The mode button is on the back. If you need manual focus your lens usually has a switch on it. The flag looking button on the D-Pad controls all the autofocus modes.
So interesting! I see this as a Canon R8 competitor and I think the Canon would be the better choice for me with very good handling and a decent evf. What I really wanted to see was an improved G100.
100% - that's how I see it as well. If you're a social creator, this thing has more codecs than you'll ever need but if you own an S5II or X, it's a great B or travel alternative.

Nice Job Shane :) Looks like a super fun camera man :) I could certainly see myself using it for personal work… NOT having a view finder and no rear thumb dial, might take some time to get used too… Would be a good travel camera 📷… Great Job man :)
Thanks, Grant. It's a fun camera to use no questions about it, but it did take a bit of getting used to especially after being used to the grip on the S5II. It's definitely a great travel camera. I could see this being my main travel camera for personal stuff, it's plenty powerful. :)
You state at 7:38: "the USB-C can be used to charge the camera but in my test at least as of right now you can't have the camera on and charge at the same time which will give the advantage to something like the S5 Mark II or X". You can't charge them either while they're on (a big problem IMHO!), just operate them on external power either entirely (power delivery) or partly (if there's not sufficient juice incoming; for example, with a standard 2A non-PD charger when recording 6K OG). So I assume the S9 works in exactly the same way as the bigger brothers.
Yes you can. If you connect a USB-PD supply 9v/3a, the II and X will run all day without losing charge. If you use a phone charger, they don't supply enough charge. I do this all of the time but you need to make sure you have a Power Delivery device that covers 9v/3a - not all of them do. I hope this helps. The S9 is more like the original S5 - the same warning message comes up letting you know the battery will still drain.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy "The S9 is more like the original S5 - the same warning message comes up letting you know the battery will still drain" - you mean the S9 can't be externally powered at all (it doesn't use the external power then in any way) when it's on? That's a bummer and definitely a step backwards, given how bad the battery life is at least when shooting 6K OG.
I don't do much video...but....a pair of Sony A7c and one A7s bodies currently serve my needs well....plus... Sony has had a complete line of great Pro type lenses.... My favorite Panasonic is the GX9...(Panasonic seems to have left the small range finder style behind) of course OM 9:54 did the same with the electronic Pen F... And that f8 lens is a bit rediculas...Cheers
Thanks, man. I shot this entire video using the Panasonic S5IIX in the natural picture profile (except for when stated on screen). It's the same colour science and result as the S9 will give you in the same 10-bit 4:2:2 mode. I love this profile, no need to grade anything, it just works. I appreciate it cheers.
It was all looking awesome……until you mentioned the record time limits! It did seem like that was going to come up as a problem as there was no visible ventilation - it seems to be a must-have on a full frame nowadays. With any luck Panasonic will be doing a GX9ii with a large chunk of the G9ii features…….now that would be an awesome street camera!! Being an Aussie in the UK it’s great to hear another Aussie……especially on a channel like this. Keep up the good work Shane!!
Interesting camera. Might pick one up, but with the S5II I currently have no limitations like the S9 except for size and weight. Sort of reminds me of my older GX85 but without an EVF.
Question for you…. When we say record limit… is the camera overheating and we have to wait for cool down to start record again? Secondly, can using an Atomos Ninja V on the S9 solve the Recording Limitations for those moments when Long Form Content is needed ? Thanks for your input on these 2 questions
I don't have a Ninja, so I haven't tested that but the camera has no overheated on me in my tests shooting outside. If you're running it in 6k mode in the sun, it might - but I need more time to test that out. So far, I've been able to hit record again without issues. Stay tuned for more tests.
I think with some people the "recording limit" is misunderstood. With the S9, as an example, the 15 minute recording limit is based on shooting a 15 minute long clip. Not multiple clips adding up to 15 minutes. To be honest, I can't think of a time where I - or anyone else I know - records 15 minute long clips on any regular basis. If you're filming interviews, then yes, you should pick another camera. For myself, I create either video reviews for my RUclips channel, or I shoot narrative work. In either case, I never need to shoot 15 minute long clips. Anyway.... Considering the other features like open gate 6K and the real time LUTs, I think the S9 is a great choice for the price. It's definitely a full frame camera that I am considering on getting. If I had the money right now, I would preorder it. Thanks for a great first review. I look forward to seeing more people review it once it has been released. Thanks.
The record limit is a big issue for many, doing a talking head video, a wedding ceremony, or a how to do video. But Lumix have now fixed this flaw, so it is now a lot better camera. My issue is no 50/60fps in open gate at any resolution or compression.
First - fan of the channel. Second - hmmmm....I know I am clearly not the intended market, but as a stills shooter since the late 80s and current hybrid shooter, I've see many waves come and go - but unless Lumix has another upcoming compact release, I think they missed an opportunity to take a slice of the Fuji compact pie. A own three Lumix bodies - came over from Canon and Fuji several years ago - hoping they find some success though. A small full frame for travel (with a flash) is something I am still waiting on from Lumix. Just imagine a tiny trigger like a Godox Xnano on that body - travel dream. Will hold on to my trusty Lx100ii for a while longer.
Thanks Shane… btw you were the only 1 or 2 RUclips reviewers I saw who specifically noted that this was a sponsored video. One fellow noted the had been loaned camera for a while, but paid for his own trip. Nothing wrong with being sponsored, but be clear about it. I appreciate your integrity in that regard! As for the camera, I think you captured it well…perhaps more of a b camera for many, but for the right use quite nice. Certainly sounds like something that can be used to get a photo or video and turn it around to social media quickly. And like many smaller cameras fun to use and to travel with. I’d lean more towards a s5ii, but I’m well past the market segment this is geared to. I do look forward to seeing how it works for many over the next 6 months or so.
Thanks, Gordon. I literally have no idea how any can be put up at an event like this and claim it's not sponsored. They literally sponsored everyone to be there. While they had no input into the video content, it falls under paid promotion in my book. Thanks again, I'll have more videos coming up.
4:59 I don’t understand anyone who has no problem with electronic shutter only. Never took a photo of a moving subject? Any kid kicking a ball will be disastrous
@@GeekyNerdyTechy that makes it even worse, because if they don’t give a crap about it, they wouldn’t even buy this camera and are happy with their iPhones already! 🤣🤣🤣 I really wonder if the research team asked a bunch of phone users what they want in a full frame camera. If that’s the case, it’s be like asking me what I want in a Ferrari, but I’ll never buy one🤣🤣🤣 I see so many influencers enjoying this camera, and rightly so, but when asked if they will buy it is it’s their only camera, they pretty much all said no. So who’s this camera trying to target anyway? Beginners who have no cameras? Or professionals who has more than one already?
@alanc6416Is it ignorance of the fact that modern mirrorless camera high-speed burst, blackout free and pre capture modes are electronic shutter? 😆 Or are you a parrot?
@@PhotoVideoTechOz I didn’t say electronic shutter is useless, there’s a time and place for it and it’s very useful. But if it’s so great, why does Sony develop the global shutter? And why do mechanical shutter still exists? It’s like saying since we have airbags, why bother with seatbelts? Because they serve different purposes. And you should try taking a photo of Moving Car, which is nothing out of the ordinary, and find out what I’m talking about
@@alanc6416using an enthusiast DSLR/Mirrorless with a slow flash sync speed will have the exact same effect, the fastest mech shutters are still only 320th and will still result in lateral movement warping. Plenty of people in theatre/dance and in big budget films (even action films) now don't use any sort of sound blimps, they just use electronic shutter. Now if you go back to the target audience, how often are they going to shoot images out the side window of a car, then how many are going to care that there is a slight slant in a shot. Now don't go on with the hogwash about no one buys a full frame as there first mirrorless camera because that actually is the biggest part of the photo video market, hence why all brands have cameras in that area and they are ranged in big box stores.
Great video mate! Interesting camera for content creators, but no headphone port..What?! 🤯 Also, in the age where phones are trying to emulate shallow dof, a fixed f8 lens makes no sense and manual focus only?! 🤯 again 😂
Yeah the lens isn’t going to be many peoples first choice. The room kinda went quiet when it was announced. I can’t believe it doesn’t have autofocus. If the lens was a hundred dollars more and had AF it would have been great. The lens isn’t too bad image quality wise, but I wouldn’t buy it. The kit lens kills it in every way.
Nice video. But anyway, I am curious about the crop zoom. So if we use only prime lens, is there a zoom in while recording or set it first then recording video?
Hybrid zoom works with the Zoom feature on the lenses. You can use a crop mode with Primes, but it's not the same sort of thing as the Hybrid Zoom in terms of flexibility. The experience with this is seamless.
It's a lot of fun to shoot with due to the size and simplicity of the design, but the S5 does have the advantage of unlimited recording and a mechanical shutter. Thanks for watching.
Thanks. This camera aims at Content Creators (short video style content). Sometimes I feel the #Lmount Alliance is slow at exploring the full potential of the 3 main members. Imagine a FF rangefinder GX8 style of body updated to today standards and demands (see Sony A7c II), . #Sigma has those contemporary primes with aperture ring that would fit nicely on a FF #lumix rangefinder. #panasonic made a lot of great camera bodies for photographers in the past. The G100 was a great M4/3 camera, but they did not include IBIS in it... The alliance should sit down a the table aging and discuss who does what: Sport cameras, hybrid photo-video cameras,...
I think Panasonic will have trouble fulfilling all the orders! A super capable small sized full frame camera priced as a new iPhone! Finally! Thank you Panasonic!
@@GeekyNerdyTechy i actually just found some specs and its only Wifi 5 (802.11ac) - not a deal breaker but its not great for backing up larger video files (hence the lite mode you showed becomes even more relevant) but photos it will be okay.
I would be a really hard experience for me if they flew me to Japan and then asked me to post positive review of this camera :D. I couldn't shake the lack of shutter, lack of flash and record limit off of me :D. The price in my country is 1750€ so almost 1900$ ... wtf?
Those features aren't as important to people getting started. I keep the target audience in mind when I review gear, and this is aimed at beginners wanting an FF camera to make content, not someone who already has a higher-end camera or a seasoned professional. No one was obliged to say anything in their videos.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Why so defensive? I do not have anything against this review, although if someone is a beginner might be deceived this camera would serve him for long time, but if he/she decides to shoot some flash photos might be surprised. S5II is much better choice in my opinion. This one seems like really niche camera. But that is just my opinion and everybody is allowed to disagree .... Not saying any of the reviewers were forced to say anything, but Petapixel review has been a bit more balanced.
@@JoATTech Imagine your review is not so nice, no Lumix press junket, eh summit, in 2025 then. That said Panasonic did at least 50 people on this junket. So $2500 times 50. For this you get 50 videos, or probably many times more. And the have not received the compact zoom yet either, so another round in a few weeks. EDIT: 50 people will probably not cut it, it might be more like 100. From all cornes of the globe.
@@GrenlandUnderVann I can imagine, that it would be killing me to be part of that scheme if product is not right. But I've done promo of S5IIX for free, cause I loved the camera. Recorded at least 10 videos bout it, but just 13k views all together.
@@Bigcookfilms I've been to places with my S5IIX which prohibit any pro recording. S5IIX with a cage and a handle (but small SIRUI Saturn anamorphic). No one said anything, they thought it's just a tourist camera :D.
Could you talk Shane in Japan with the development department of panasonic ... what do they say to a little M43 PDAF "powerhouse" 😇Don`t they see THIS SEGMENT so many are waiting for ?! Keep doing that! I love it! bg from germany
They Should have made this a fixed lens camera everyone expected it to be. High res everyday carry fullframe compact with weather sealing. Leica can make that lens. 35 or 40 f2. A fuji x100 killer with that lut feature. Would have selled better.
Hello , Great video and congratulations to be Panasonic ambassador. This camera is heavily stripped down S5 ii for the same price as S5iiX . Just not make sense at all. It’s looks like a toy camera . It’s not photography camera and not videography as well. We still waiting for good quality prime lenses from Panasonic, not this nonsense toy camera and 26mm/f8 lens .Look at Nikon ZF comparing this ? Cheers.
It’s made for social media work but it’s more than capable of shooting with the same quality found in the s5II. The recording limits are there because there’s no active cooling. Anyone shooting social content won’t need more than 10 mins of 6k open gate at a time and if you do, there’s other camera options for sure. 😎👍
Panasonic produced this S9 camera that nobody wants or asked for. We have been waiting for and wanting the release of S1h ii or S1 ii. Where are they???????? Stop giving us craps camera. We want the pro grade cameras.
I think it's important to realise that you are not always the target audience for everything that gets released. They literally released the S5II and X last year and the X has more pro features than my Sony FX3. Check that one out if you need to upgrade, it's a great camera. I am hopeful the other cameras get refreshed, but this is for young folks making social content and not seasoned professions such as yourself.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy don't they use a iPhone 15 Pro Max or Samsung S24 Ultra or something. You must believe in angel dust and DOFFING to think this stripped down "FF" will find a greater audience.

Modern marketing: fly in a brunch of youtubers to an event at an exotic place, who report all the same thing! It is the new type of corruption, screwing the perspective, and conning us all!
Modern commenters: let’s repeat a bunch of nonsense in the comment section and not even watch the video. Get off the bandwagon and be your own man.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy I've seen all your videos, and like both you and your previous videos. But the pattern is getting more and more apparent, how all all new camera models are marketed now, that is the modern marketing, which includes many of you RUclips guys as important influencers. I think it is needed to see through this, and you very skilled guys in doing RUclips content are far from objective, and must be seen more as a marketing channel. Very few of you can claim independence from the market, as you live from it, which of course is a dilemma. It is of course also a choice from your side as well. Again, I mentioned plenty of stuff I didn't like about this and then at the end, I did a wrap up with pros and cons. If you don't like the camera, industry, or reviews, don't watch videos. If this video helped you work that out and the camera, it did it's job. If it is for you, then great. Rock on. 🙂 All the best
Why, because you aren't the target audience for it? This is a good camera for young folks getting into it and not seasoned professionals like yourself.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy No need for the ad hominems. Do you want a comment section of people who only agree with you? Newcomers to the hobby are better off with an M43 system than this over priced dogs breakfast of a camera. Strict recording time limits, no evf, no thanks!
I am waiting for the M4/3 version of this!
Will it be called G9?
Don't. Panasonic is all about Lumix S now.
Thank you Shane for the valuable video❤️🙏.
Thanks for the support!
What are you shooting with when you are holding the S9 in your hands?
It’s shot on the S5IIx in the same mode as what I used for the S9 to show how the image quality is identical - 4k 4:2:2 10-Bit on the most part. 😊
That is awesome that Panasonic invited BOTH of you! Well deserved.
You guys are like Kai and Lok… OK maybe that is not a good analogy…! 😂
🤣 haha thanks. Well I did get to meet them which was nice hehe.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Great stuff.
4:59 I don’t understand anyone who has no problem with electronic shutter only. Never took a photo of a moving subject? Any kid kicking a ball will be disastrous
If it’s a problem buy another camera. Kids making TikTok videos won’t give a crap about that. 😂
@@GeekyNerdyTechy that makes it even worse, because if they don’t give a crap about it, they wouldn’t even buy this camera and are happy with their iPhones already! 🤣🤣🤣
I really wonder if the research team asked a bunch of phone users what they want in a full frame camera. If that’s the case, it’s be like asking me what I want in a Ferrari, but I’ll never buy one🤣🤣🤣
I see so many influencers enjoying this camera, and rightly so, but when asked if they will buy it is it’s their only camera, they pretty much all said no.
🤯 again 😂
I saw someone comment that the lens was made just to take product photos of it looking small and that was a pretty funny comment
@@RhettThompsonFilm 😂
Yeah the lens isn’t going to be many peoples first choice. The room kinda went quiet when it was announced. I can’t believe it doesn’t have autofocus. If the lens was a hundred dollars more and had AF it would have been great. The lens isn’t too bad image quality wise, but I wouldn’t buy it. The kit lens kills it in every way.
Does HD 120 fps has PDAF or not?
It doesn't, no. It defaults to contrast DFD for that which is how the S5II and X also work - ruclips.net/video/J6YUDq1vW7E/видео.html
Is it the hot shoe or cold shoe? I'm confused.
Sorry if it wasn't clear. It's a cold shoe for holding a shotgun mic or wireless pack.
bless you #dadjoke
It reminds me of the Sony a6500 updated.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy got it. thanks for the quick response. 😄
Missed chance for Lumix to also introduce HEIF photo format to Lumix cameras.
Thanks for the very comprehensive first impressions. I can't wait to try out the S9 myself which hopefully happens before the 2024 ends😀
Thanks, Matti! It was a fun camera to test and I’d be keen to hear your thoughts on it when you get a chance to test it out. 😀
I think I'd rather have an S5 but that looks like a damn good camera
Came here immediately when I saw the notification. Keep it up
Thanks for the support 😎👍
Once panasonic doubles the time limit this will sell out.
I think Panasonic will have trouble fulfilling all the orders!
A super capable small sized full frame camera priced as a new iPhone!
Finally!
Thank you Panasonic!
🤣
Oh the sarcasm in this one. BTW: The iPhone has less rolling shutter...
Nice review. Is it e-stabilisation only or does it also have IBIS?
It has IBIS, yes. It's the same as the S5II.
great review and japan is awesome. does the S9 support wifi 6 or 6E ?
It has Bluetooth and 5ghz Wifi for sending files wirelessly.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy i actually just found some specs and its only Wifi 5 (802.11ac) - not a deal breaker but its not great for backing up larger video files (hence the lite mode you showed becomes even more relevant) but photos it will be okay.
Good video. Thanks. toronto canada.
Thanks for watching!
Hi Shane, I'm so surprised ;-) I know you from your guitar Chanel ;-)))
Thanks mate! :)
You are one of the only You Tubers who chose the blue color.
I really liked the Blue, something different. I was going to get the standard black one, but I figured it was time for a change haha.
The IQ is great.
I’m a bit disappointed about the omissions but I’ll try and get over that…
S9 seems like "Jack of no trades, master of none" camera opposed to S5IIX which is "Jack of all trades, master of All" :D.
Jack of portability and being able to get into places that will not let the S5ii through. Also just a camera that you will take with you.
@@Bigcookfilms I've been to places with my S5IIX which prohibit any pro recording. S5IIX with a cage and a handle (but small SIRUI Saturn anamorphic). No one said anything, they thought it's just a tourist camera :D.
I’ve heard that its manual focus.
The new lens is but the camera body has the same autofocus system as the S5II as you could see from my autofocus examples.
Could you talk Shane in Japan with the development department of panasonic ... what do they say to a little M43 PDAF "powerhouse" 😇Don`t they see THIS SEGMENT so many are waiting for ?! Keep doing that! I love it! bg from germany
Fingers crossed they are hearing everyone with this. It’s a no brainer for them to do a small M43 camera at some point. 😎
Instead of C1 C2 C3, they should have OB1, R2 and C3.
I want this, but I also want to save for the Blackmagic L-mount.
They Should have made this a fixed lens camera everyone expected it to be. High res everyday carry fullframe compact with weather sealing. Leica can make that lens. 35 or 40 f2. A fuji x100 killer with that lut feature. Would have selled better.
I honestly just wish the S5II/X came in more colors lol.
Cheers.
I agree. A camera for bloggers, but in which both photos and videos are neutered.
It’s made for social media work but it’s more than capable of shooting with the same quality found in the s5II. The recording limits are there because there’s no active cooling. Anyone shooting social content won’t need more than 10 mins of 6k open gate at a time and if you do, there’s other camera options for sure. 😎👍
This is the first video I prefer watching on S9
Thanks for the support, mate! I put a lot of work into this! Thanks again.

Wow
@@GrenlandUnderVannits the same kind of camera as sony a7c but better and the sony sells very well. There really is no reason for you to be this negative just because the world is not spinning around you.
Modern marketing: fly in a brunch of youtubers to an event at an exotic place, who report all the same thing! It is the new type of corruption, screwing the perspective, and conning us all!
Modern commenters: let’s repeat a bunch of nonsense in the comment section and not even watch the video. You sound like the sort of guy that probably dropped a bunch of comments on videos without watching them. Of course the videos are similar, it’s a product review.
I think just that people should be aware.
@@mazeson I've made content for 14 years on my other channel and it survives based on my integrity and objectivity. If you had any idea of my other reviews, even on this channel then you'd know this. People claiming every video or creator is not objective is hilarious. Most of the camera gear I've reviewed here is stuff I've purchased from retailers in Australia, but that's not good enough too right?
Again, I mentioned plenty of stuff I didn't like about this and then at the end, I did a wrap up with pros and cons. If you don't like the camera, industry, or reviews, don't watch videos. If this video helped you work that out and the camera, it did it's job. If it is for you, then great. Rock on. 🙂 All the best
It’s 3 grand Australian what a rip off
I see it for $2599 in Australia with a free lens at digidirect.
this camera is joke, they designed the body to be pocketable, but Panasonic offers no pocketable lens to go with it, so there is no point.
It's no good mate.
Why, because you aren't the target audience for it? This is a good camera for young folks getting into it and not seasoned professionals like yourself.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy No need for the ad hominems. Do you want a comment section of people who only agree with you?
