The African gimmick was originally supposed to be SD Jones, but he turned it down and Vince held a grudge for years, and would never put SD over because of it.
l believe it, McMahon would go out of his way to humiliate his wrestlers. One of the worse was red rooster which I thought was the worst, humiliating.
I like how they had Natural Born Killaz playing in the background just like his matches.

@@Goyakahian1 Nah. Jack's older shoots were always cocaine-fueled tirades where he tried to come off like the Eddie Murphy of pro wrestling. This is something way different. It's clear he was having serious problems here, probably related to CTE.
The thing about the Saba Simba gimmick is that Vince was trying to make a multicultural Warrior faction of faces, with each member representing their respective culture and ethnicity. Ultimate Warrior was to be the head. Saba Simba, African. Tito Santana, Latino. Tatanka, Native American. Ricky Steamboat, Asian. In that context, the Saba Simba gimmick worked. Where the faction fell apart was you've got this white guy as the "ultimate" of all of the warriors. How are you going to sell that? "Well, these guys are all the ultimate warriors of their respective cultures, but the white guy is the ultimate of all the ultimates." Then he held Vince up for a payday and killed any plans for the faction.
Vince...with all the dumb gimmicks. 1 would work and 9 others fail. Now he's gone 4th rate SNL/Holiday on Ice, and doesn't have the experienced wrestlers he relied on since his dad gave him a job.

I remember that shit. Right out of the starting gate, Roddy Piper was shitting on the Samba Simba gimmick! Vince tried to play it up like, "Tony Atlas is trying to get back in touch with his African roots and his ancestors...", but Rod didn't want to hear that shit. It went over like a lead balloon.

New Jack has had countless moments, memories, memorable matches, and memorable promos. What does Tony Atlas have? Samba Simba? You're talking as if Smokey Mountain and ECW were nothing special. In Smokey Mountain the Gangstas were main eventers and would cause riots. ECW was a legit third US promotion and they had PPV. How many matches did Tony Atlas have on PPV? Don't let Tony trick you with his bullshit stories about how over he was. He wasn't over.

Fans are weird, New Jack here admits he started with Tony Atlas by talking about him. Tony confronted him and if we go by what NJ is saying then Tony was civil and NJ was an ass. Then NJ admits to being biased against Tony based off what somebody else said. NJ is the problem, he spoke on something beyond him, attacked a person for no reason and continued to disparage that person and was admittedly biased not over his own experience but on what someone else said. Sure you might have tats on somebody's body but NJ never could headline and sellout the places Atlas has. Tony is a legend, NJ is a glorified backyard wrestler

There are still tribes in Africa TODAY that dress like Saba Simba and hunt exactly like that. Sometimes the gimmick is so accurate that it hurts people's feelings. Maybe they just can't handle the fact that not all countries are equally developed. Maybe not all countries want to be "developed" the way we are.
