It's not the song, it's the performance. Lou was visibly not well and his voice is audibly not stable.
As a 21 year old guy when this came out, I used to go out at lunch time and sit in my car and play this song full volume on my car cassette tape. Really moved me and made me think about life, love and what really matters in life. Very powerful song and 30 years later, it still moves me today...
