    Thanks for the revisit. A classic film.
    Have people forgotten how bad crime was in the '70s & '80s, especially in NYC? It's easy to see why Death Wish and other vigilante films struck a cord with audiences. If you've been victimized, these films can be cathartic.
    High recommend for Street Law (1974) starring Franco Nero. It's a solid Italian Death Wish "cash in" for those inclined.

    Death Wish is a nice little time capsule. My dad was a cop when movies like Death Wish and Dirty Harry came out. He had mixed feelings about vigilante pictures, especially Dirty Harry. On the one hand, he understood their appeal, but on the other, he also understood why we don't just empower randos to "clean up" the city, since people ultimately have their own definitions of "undesirables."
    One thing is undeniable, my dad, who was always the tallest or one of the tallest people in any photo you will find him in, always had a hell of a lot of respect for Charles Bronson. Bronson might have just been 5'9", but he was a total badass.
    I still need to watch 10 to Midnight. Thank you for this review. You make me want to watch Death Wish again just to hear the score. I am not sure that I truly appreciated the score the first time that I watched the film. I was young and stupid. That is my only defense.

    Micheal Winner was a bit of a joke here in the UK as he was mainly known for his adverts that included his catch phase "Calm down dear". Winner mainly made B movies so I didn't like his films but I do remember watching and enjoying The Mechanic in the 80's

    I saw the first Death Wish last year for the first time, or rather for the first time in its entirety. You can really feel Bronsons character go through all the stages to becoming a vigilante and that is what makes the film great for me, it adds to the violence so to speak.

    • @geekinwithJamesHancock
      @geekinwithJamesHancock  2 месяца назад +1

      100% agree. That ingredient is pretty much gone in the sequels but his gradual metamorphosis in the original film is a huge part of what makes the film so eerily compelling and addictive.

    Awesome take on the original classic flick! They don't make industrial strength bad-asses like Bronson anymore, and they certainly DO NOT make first-rate crime dramas like this and the other '70s classics, particularly the vigilante sub-genre. "Thriller: A Cruel Picture" was certainly intense and, well, different in its uncensored version (all for films in their uncensored versions BTW--that's the way the director made it, that's how it should be shown!). Another top-notch NYC vigilante flick of the period is Abel Ferrara's "Ms. 45," with Zoe Lund; typical grittiness for Ferrara's flicks. Not sure you've done one, but I'd love to see you do a retrospective on Ferrara's NYC stuff--"Fear City" and especially "King of New York" are masterpieces--plus there's "Bad Lieutenant!" Keep it up--I stumbled onto "Fear City" because of one of your Erotic Thriller retrospectives--you're one of the best film RUclipsrs out there!

    I’m in my fifties. It was shocking to hear a friend who was 20 yrs younger tell me that those films were Conservative propaganda. Um, no.. Having lived in the big city as a kid in the 70s the streets were downright scary in comparison to today. 😱

    • @MisterCross
      @MisterCross 2 месяца назад +1

      Conservative propaganda! Haha oh man. That brings back memories, in the 1980's when Reagan was President The Dem's dumped all the Dirty Harry & Death Wish movies as Conservative Republican Wish fullfilment fantasies. So I see where the Conservative Propaganda comment came from.

      I think one of the reasons this movie has had such a long shelf life is that it is tough to box it into a corner politically. Anyone watching it will be on Bronson's wavelength for at least part of the movie. As far as NYC goes, I love the movies made here in the Seventies, but I'm deeply greatly that I've lived here from 2008-2024.

    I was 20 when it opened and already a big fan of Bronson from his European films. I was fairly indifferent to it as the new Bronson movie because it was heavy-handedly manipulative. There was no denying the score was the best thing about it for me, although I will admit that Wendell Mayes' screenplay was more clever than the book by Brian Garfield. The sequel was an obligatory cash-in and unsurprisingly 2nd rate. The Cannon stuff was all 10th-rate, even with the reliable J. Lee Thompson directing. There's no denying how big a star Bronson had become by 1974, with no end in sight to his popularity.

      I have a soft spot for Cannon movies thanks to my misspent childhood when my family went to see movies like Ninja III: The Domination and Breakin' without any knowledge of which company was making them. Lifeforce of course enjoys its own unique appeal.
