- This week on Buzz by the Bay our guest is renowned author and mythologist, Devdutt Pattanaik. His books have captivated readers worldwide, by decoding the intricate threads of Indian mythology and making it relevant to our modern lives. Though he is famous for his works on Hindu epics, in this interview we are going to discuss his new book on Jainism titled Bahubali. In the book he gives us 63 insights into Jain wisdom. Though Jainism is an ancient faith not much is known about it. Devdutta delves into the origins of Jainism and refutes the common belief that Jainism was merely a reaction to Hinduism. He says it rose independently in a different part of the sub continent.

The word "Hinduism" was coined in 1816-17. Its was used to identify the people living on the other side of the Sidhu (Indus) river. Now because the Persians(Parsis) couldn't pronounce "Sindhu" properly, it later slowly became "Hindu", for the people living across the Sindhu river.
By the 1840s, the term "Hinduism" was used by those Indians who opposed British colonialism. Later, due to political stands, turned into a religious term who wanted to distinguish themselves from Muslims and Christians.
Now, because of a huge majority of followers of this religion, which is only growing in numbers, Sanatan also became a religion which Hindu people follow. but in reality, SANATAN IS NOT EQUAL TO hinduism. Let's see what it means:-
Sanatan literally mean "ancient", "venerable", "eternal".
So according to this, more than 1 religion, which is ancient can be called Sanatan, like Jainism, buddhism etc. Which doesn't necessarily mean that they follow the same religion or worship the same Gods, or even follow same practices.
Remember: A religion can be sanatan, but sanatan isn't any religion.
"Sanatan" tells how old a religion is, so it can indicate more than 1 religion, too.

FACTS: Buddhism and Jainism were followed by people before Lord Mahaveer and Lord Buddha.
Lets see how:
Jainism:- Historically, Ramayana was taken place during the time reign of the 20th Tirthankar in Jainism. Mahabharat during the 22nd Tirthankar.
And historians have found evidence of existence of 23rd tirthankar who lived 10,000 yrs ago. 2300-2400 years ago was when Lord Mahaveer found Jainism again. Who was the 24th Tirthankar(last of this time cycle). There were 23 Tirthankar before him for different periods of time, ranging from crores, to thousands.
Same for Buddhism, Buddha was the latest highly spiritual being who revived Buddhism again. This doesn't mean there weren't any before him. People followed Buddhism even before him.
Fact is ramayan and Mahabharata are all bogus story books just like some Harry Potter novel that never happened. Buddha and mahavir never knew or spoke about flying monkeys carrying mountains 😂🐒💨.
Please provide details and evidence and publish in a scientific journal.
Why can’t the interview just be an independent subject sticking to Jainism. I don’t understand why the host had to keep connecting each and every single thing to Hinduism. I understand it helps in drawing a distinction between the two religions. However, it rather seemed over imposing. Otherwise great insight!
Hi 😊 thanks for your comment. I’m the host of the show, anushka. I don’t usually respond to comments but I just came across this one and wanted to reply since I work very hard on my interviews, and was particularly interested in this topic. The interview is based on devdutts book Bahubali which is about Jainism. In the book he draws many parallels with Hinduism and Buddhism that’s why it was important to keep to that theme. Also Jainism is a lesser known religion, and comparisons help the majority of my audience to understand the teachings. As for the comparison with yoga, I thought it relevant and interesting as I’m a student of yoga sutras and the similarities with Jainism are fascinating. Besides all these religions are dharmic faiths. There’s so much overlap. My intention was definitely not to impose a sense of Hindu superiority. Any credible, well researched journalist would bring up the parallels. Just makes it more thought provoking. Glad you found the discussion insightful. Jainism is indeed has some amazing principles. 😊

I just want you to know certain things that even Hinduism scriptures such as Vishnu Purana, Garud Purana, Linga Purana, Vayu Purana, Agni Purana, Skand Purana, Bhagavata Purana, Matsya Purana, Markandeya Purana clearly mentions that this country name derived from the Rishabhnath's Son Bharat Chakravarthy. Including Rig Veda mentions all the 24 Tirthankaras name in it. Jainism existed prior to Vedic period and probably there are more chances that Jainism is older than Hinduism. You can find Harrapan Torso a nude idol found from the Indus valley civilization as well. So Jainism is considered to be distinct and separate from Vedic religion. Just because it has similaraties that doesn't necessary that Jainism is a part of Hinduism. It could be the other way around. Judaism came before Christianity and Islam but today Judaism has less population compare to Christianity and Islam. Similarly it's possible that Jainism was already into existence long before the Vedic Religion 🙏🏻 Jai Jinendra 🙏🏻

We do believe in Shree Ram in the form of Balbhadra ji. But we have different beliefs. Same as you guys believe that Rishabh Dev ji is 8th avatar of Vishnu ji. Our belief is different but rather than arguing with others we believe in Anekantvad.
Similarly, Shree Krishna is also cousin of our 22nd tirthankar Neminath ji. So, we are born an brought up listening to all of them. Be it our tirthankars or Hindu deities.
And yes even though I am Jain, we do listen to Gayatri Mantra too. I memorised the same. Personally I do take positive things from all the religions.

Bhagwat purana of hinduism accepts that name bharat comes from bharat chakrvatri son of rishabdev. However it was written much latter, around 10th century ad.
In that Rishav is an avatar of Vishnu and the stories are quire different from Jainism.

And if mahavir and buddha didn't preach in Sanskrit so what is the problem. They choose languages of their time region and those which are better known to common people but several jain and Buddhist scriptures are in Sanskrit e.g. tatwarthsutra is one of the most imp granth in jains. And jain do have a ramayan charector namely hanuman who may have defferent characteristics then other's Hanuman but jain do pay respect towards him.

Have you read the Hebrew Bible? It calls the God-like people Elohim and the group of them translated into arabic and cyriac into Allah. Christianity derives the origin from Hebrew Bible but the idea of prophet of God had come to them and with time, it evolved into Jesus as the son of God , not as an attribute of God.

Jesus is not a historical character but part of the Christian myth. Dharma has no concept of a Christian God.
