Ever since the League of Women Voters stopped being the host, they became little more than dueling press conferences. No one answers the questions as asked, and it's seldom addressed in any way whatsoever. Half the point, now, seems to be a game to see who has the best zingers and burns. Moderators are rarely especially well informed or active. And the format is kind of absurd. It's like how they gave Bernie Sanders all of a 1 minute response to solve health care /and/ how to pay for it. How can you discuss intractable problems, their complex solutions, and the funding methods to apply the proposed solution in all of a minute or two? Military spending, same problem; foreign policy? It's even worse.
At best, these bipartisan debates offer superficial answers to questions that somewhat relate to what was asked; at worst, it's two amateur comedians roasting each other over whatever some PR study suggests will goose engagement, and by leaving it to the RNC and DNC to run, they guarantee no one other parties are included, no moderator can be anything shy of mainstream/establishment types, and absolutely nothing of actual, substantial depth gets tackled.
It's embarrassing and shameful, how inept and shammy these things have become.

    How It Should Be:
    - Instead of debates, hold a series of forums where each forum focuses on one area of public policy, and where each candidate separately (and for the same amount of time) sits down with the moderator for a one-on-one discussion, followed by questions from the audience
    - Every candidate on the ballot in enough states to theoretically get 270 Electoral College votes would be eligible to participate in these forums
    - Instead of being a series of soundbytes with little or no substance that tend to just be anti-the-other-guy, the candidates can focus on their own policy solutions and more meaningfully interact with average voters, especially those who might not be as familiar with a particular candidate at the forum.

Where my wife is from, each political party has a platform. A platform is a set of ideals and beliefs that are meant to be lived up to. The politicians are simply there as placeholders. They can perform the functions of meeting with constituents, fielding questions at events, giving speeches, etc., but their main function is voting the party line where any decision is being made. If you ever fail to vote the party line, which happens all the time here in America, you will be immediately removed from your position and someone else will take up your responsibilities. You will never, ever, hold a job in politics again if you "Vote your conscience". It is always anyone's best guess which way our own representatives will vote, but it is usually determined by who gives the largest campaign contribution. Democracy in America has just collapsed into legal bribery, and everyone just shrugs and accepts it. That is why there is so much indifference about the political process here, because the important issues are determined in the back room with the lobbyists over cognac and caviar. Your bumper sticker and 25 dollar donation does not mean jack.

The opinions on “who won” the first televised debates differed wildly based on whether they were listened to on the radio or viewed. @@AllenKnutson well, I absolutely disagree with your opinion on RFK Jr. I don’t find him to be disingenuous at all. RFK Jr. is often slandered and taken out of context by the media and his political opponents that are defending the corporations that have them in their pockets. Also, like any normal human being, his stances on certain issues (often moot) have changed and evolved with age. RFK Jr. is a gentlemen, and willing to listen to people that disagree with him because he is a critical thinker. His claims aren’t merely pulled from out of nowhere, and he backs up what he says with studies, facts, and logic. He has been fighting toxic corporate powers his whole life, and successfully. This is critical thinking at its best and the basis of a healthy democracy. He’s an advocate for free speech, something you should be taking very seriously in this modern dangerous age of information. I also full heartedly agree with his stance on the Ukraine war and the military industrial complex. Half a million dead Ukrainians, who have fought a proxy war for us so the complex can make money from spreading NATO is absolutely appalling. I’m tired of American imperialism and the deaths that are resulting from it. These are the types of qualities I would like to see in any leader. He’s a breath of fresh air in a sea of disgusting corruption and unchecked crony capitalism and the only one that seems to care about restoring the middle class of America and our children’s futures. He’s the only one that addresses the health crisis in America. We are being poisoned by corporations profiting off of making food with toxic chemicals in them… just look at any other country what they are eating and the laws they have in place. I can go on and on and on. I don’t think RFK Jr is absolutely perfect, or any candidate or politician for that matter. But I do agree with most of what he has to say and I believe he’s proposing solutions to problems in America that have for too long now been ignored.
