We all know it, we knew it four years ago even. Jon Stewart needs to host the debates. It would change everything.
He'd steal the show, probably get elected himself.
@@danielvest9602 he'd be a better president, he actually cares about people's wellbeing.
No political candidate in their right mind would ever agree to it, they'd be scared shitless of an actual unbiased intelligent person asking relevant in-depth questions. And therein lies the problem.
@@danielvest9602 yaaay! "If nominated, I will not run! If elected, I will not serve!" What a slogan!
A presidential debate is not supposed to be a sideshow. 🤦
Stewart should be the debate moderator. He wouldn't let either side obfuscate.
With a team able to fact-check and bring up counter evidence in real time.
@@1st2nd2 Honestly, with Trump being in the position he is in, we're way past any hope that "fact checking" debate statements is the solution to improving democratic decision making. Nobody watching that debate would be in any way suprised or swayed by it. That's not the playing field Trump participates on, and not something his supporters can be reached with.
I'm not sure that stewart can achieve this miracle.
the right wing would never agree to it, even though Jon has roasted the left numerous times.
@@yuotueb The supporters who can not be reached with fact-checking can not be reached with a debate. That would not be the purpose of it.
Real-time fact-checking does, however, have the potential of reaching people who are on the fence, undecided voters.
It would also serve as a deterrent to either party of spreading falsehoods. Barring the effectiveness of that, it would embarrass liars to their face, or at the very least be extremely entertaining to watch.
Not only is the mute button important but there should be a little bar on the bottom with live fact checking during the debates

@@wendigo53 When he committed an act of war and blew up the Nordstream pipeline.
When he pretends to defend democracy while the DNC blocks all primary candidates and is doing its best to block 3rd party ones too.

His education, his exam results, the majority of doddering old stories he mixes and makes up on the spot.

Put the two candidates in soundproof booths. Ask them the same questions simultaneously. Let them answer for 2 minutes with a 15 second warning. Segment 2: Have each candidate identify the 5 questions they would ask their opponent. Segment 3, have them answer the questions. Stitch together the content.
Frank is older than both Trump and Biden and he's more quick witted and lucid than either of them.
Joe biden literally had a speech corrected more than 8 times last week . It was last week 😂😂. By the way trump went to libertarians got booed like a man why can't Biden go there .🎉😂😂😂
The debates should NOT have audiences. I agree with the format of the currently planned debate.
Agreed.
Interesting that the Commission introduced a mute button 4 years ago. I don't recall them having actually used it.... Let's hope they automatically activate it when each ones time is up.
I think he meant after. They typically don’t make changes during the debate cycle but I think they probably should when it’s something like that.
4 years ago was halfway through 2020. AFTER the debates, and most importantly, AFTER the presidential race had already been decided. They installed the mute functionality AFTER the election, no doubt in direct response to the chaotic mess that was Trumps involvement in the debates.
tape delay with only actual truths to audio.
Even if they're granted only the 7 seconds they barely deserve to blah
@@katsong3302If they did that, all of Chump's responses would end up being only 3 words long.
When the timer goes off, so should the microphone. When it's not Trump's turn to speak, let his microphone be silenced.
Better yet, separate them by a soundproof glass barrier, so one can't yell while the other candidate - or the moderator - is speaking.
@@chezmoi42 Yes to both these ideas, after the shambles of the last Trump 'debate'.
No audience is best. Never, ever should there be an audience. Only press.
Yes. Audience can watch live from outside. If they want to shout and fight each other do that outside.
An audience also edu area the public on just how low we have become in our sense of honor. Live audience adds electricity. Live audience helps keep the moment real, and risky.
lol. Educates*. Guess I’m going to the debate this year.
Press is problematic too, if politicians speak for sound bites, instead of truth .
Jon is basically doing the Office Space "What would you say it is... you do here?" bit and this guy has nothing but a jump-to-conclusions mat.
👌
And he keeps interrupting Jon before he is done speaking. Grrr.
I saw the same thing, except Fahrenkopf as the "people person," excited to unveil his mat that has a bunch of *conclusions* you can *jump* to!
“It was non-partisan, not bi-partisan, NON-partisan”, he stresses, while explaining that the chair of the DNC and himself the chair of the RNC formed the commission. Edit: the previous debates were awful. Trump was able to talk over Biden, they didn’t cut his mic. I like Biden’s requests: no in-house crowds.
Not only that but the polling percentages required to make it are based on polling handled by the party operatives, with the explanation being that they are the best-suited to accurately capture the pulse of their bases. Don't take my word for it; it's a plain, unprotected, casually searchable fact. Perot's success led them to restructure things to keep things manageable, so it is 100% 'bi' and not 'non.'
@@vincentjohnflorio this point especially proves that the CPD was and is designed purely to serve the interests of the duoply establishment, not the people or the country.
Yeah, and I don't think this man gave a great case for continuing with them.
If he wanted to stress non-partisanship, then I think he definitely should have said that they're changing the rules to allow third party candidates.
Otherwise he's just lying.
Trump has never debated! You have to have knowledge of issues. He's the kid throwing a tantrum in kindergarten, it worked then. Trumps a grown man that craps his pants.
"You have this sort of system set up for tradition, but the media has changed so drastically. It's so polarized. It's so sensationalized. They're not looking to accomplish what may be what the commission is looking to accomplish and is that not what's at odds?" - Jon @ 4:55. Why does this feel like Jon's point on Crossfire 20ish years ago, all over again? 😂😂
Bc it is. You’re right. I too remember Crossfire.
He may have killed Crossfire, but he can't reshape the media landscape. The money is there and as long as it is, this chaotic vitriol will be the way it stays. Jon can't stop it. We can't stop it. If you look at the comments even here on this channel, it shows even those aware of this terrible dynamic still choose to be a part of it.
I shout at the debate every time why don’t they put a mute button on him? If he wasn’t stopping I don’t know why they haven’t used it.
Ya he claims how much they changed, but if that did happen I've never noticed it. No audience, a mute button, longer answers
Echo that.
Just like never putting him in jail, it's unprecedented.
money, it's all about money. If they mute Trump, they would lose a chunk of his supporters that only watch to see him be a bully and call people names. So, they let Trump be Trump, not mute him, so they keep the ratings up.
Modern debates are little more than reality tv soundbite generators.
You mean /maga era not modern. Actual debates are not shouting matches or ad homenin rants. Trump et all "argue" but "debate" is not at all what happens when they use that term for thier actual reality TV fiasco show
@@sixfigureskibum nah, this phenomenon has existed before MAGA was a thing. It's a travesty to even call them debates. Americans wouldn't know real debate if they saw it, they'd think it was too boring. not enough name calling or gotcha moments.
Ever since the League of Women Voters stopped being the host, they became little more than dueling press conferences. No one answers the questions as asked, and it's seldom addressed in any way whatsoever. Half the point, now, seems to be a game to see who has the best zingers and burns. Moderators are rarely especially well informed or active. And the format is kind of absurd. It's like how they gave Bernie Sanders all of a 1 minute response to solve health care /and/ how to pay for it. How can you discuss intractable problems, their complex solutions, and the funding methods to apply the proposed solution in all of a minute or two? Military spending, same problem; foreign policy? It's even worse.
At best, these bipartisan debates offer superficial answers to questions that somewhat relate to what was asked; at worst, it's two amateur comedians roasting each other over whatever some PR study suggests will goose engagement, and by leaving it to the RNC and DNC to run, they guarantee no one other parties are included, no moderator can be anything shy of mainstream/establishment types, and absolutely nothing of actual, substantial depth gets tackled.
It's embarrassing and shameful, how inept and shammy these things have become.
It's inevitable. Like calling the sun an unintentional tan machine.
Okay, I gotta say something here. As a past co-president of my local League of Women Voters, we ALWAYS ran NONpartisan debates. The GOP wasn't the most liked for their methods, like gerrymandering and Supreme Court justice partisan nominations. They took over the once neutral, now comical presidential debate. This guy is here to excuse what the Commission did in favor of pets politics and, well, profit for the media. Bless his heart. Turn the debates back to the League of Women Voters, who for one hundred years, pursued just politics on both sides. Look it up.
They ran it only three times: 1976, 1980, and 1984.
So twice they played a pivotal role in electing Reagan, who was the antichrist. Same timeframe the RNC consent decree was deemed necessary.
I'd call that a bad track record.
This. The commission has only helped make the debates a circus. They're not debates, they aren't held accountable, they aren't asked hard questions, etc.
lol. thanks for coming back, Jon. Please stick around at least another decade or 3
There is no mention that the commission on the presidential debate is a private organization. It's a voluntary participation.
I think it's implied given that the premise of the interview is that both candidates are declining the commission's debates?
It is NOT non-partisan. It is bi-partisan. They completely leave out third parties, and let the two candidates run it.
Grow up hippie
Let RFKjr in the debates!!
3rd party candidates can get on the stage (see Perot), so it is non-partisan even though it happens rarely. That's actually an argument against taking the debates away from the comission, now CNN and ABC can jack up the polling requirements to block Kennedy from the debate stage.
The Nonpartisan Commission probably would have let RFK Jr. Biden and Trump have formed a contract to have a private 1v1 debate, specifically for the purpose of excluding RFK Jr.
@@3zObafouzr That would be true if the polling requirements made sense. But they're too high, to the point that only very rarely can a third party candidate get in the debates.
That makes it bipartisan, and stifles speech and third party candidate coverage, so I don't think it can really be called non-partisan.
And that's regardless of what is chosen for these non-commission debates. They can be more bipartisan, or more non-partisan, but that doesn't affect the commission's partisanship.
Why should Biden submit to a drug test if rumper doesn't?!? How is THAT fair?
@kateuhler7803 The Orange Lump would fail since he's already on extremely powerful medication for his verbal diarrhea and mental constipation.
I learned a lot during the debates, particularly between Trump & Hillary: she had actual policies, could speak in an educated manner and was knowledgeable. Trump, on the other hand, was NONE of those things.
Turned out half of America felt more connected with the guy who couldn't speak.
unfortunately she was so corrupt, she couldn't win the election.
If this is so important, the candidates should be allowed to have more time to respond. Show a visible timer to them and us, the microphone should automatically mute when it is not your turn to speak.
Primary debates were what we wanted. This debate is just the pre cursor for snl episodes
dang, the season just ended! gonna have to wait for the second debate for a fresh season 50 cold open
Thank you, Jon. The vast majority of political "debates" are worthless posturing.
For me, the debates are an important display of the basic competency of the candidates and how they behave under pressure. Do they talk s*it about the other person or do they lean on facts? Are they powerful speakers or do they stumble over their words? Are they able to think on their feet or will they flounder when given a rough question?
(A _character_ study rather than a political one.)
”If you make noise, the secret service will drag you out” is a rule that should apply not just to the audience, but to the candidates as well XD

This gentleman is thoroughly engaging! I enjoy listening to him.
Universal Healthcare in the USA, Jon ✊
yeah let's have that as a talking point. tired of hearing this come up, a party get's a majority and nothing is said.
How It Should Be:
- Instead of debates, hold a series of forums where each forum focuses on one area of public policy, and where each candidate separately (and for the same amount of time) sits down with the moderator for a one-on-one discussion, followed by questions from the audience
- Every candidate on the ballot in enough states to theoretically get 270 Electoral College votes would be eligible to participate in these forums
- Instead of being a series of soundbytes with little or no substance that tend to just be anti-the-other-guy, the candidates can focus on their own policy solutions and more meaningfully interact with average voters, especially those who might not be as familiar with a particular candidate at the forum.
What could we possibly learn in a debate between them that we don't already know?
if they actually challenged each other's policies we could learn quite a bit. but they will say general things. promise that they are the reason anything in the economy is going well. I would love to see Trump have to defend his economic policies or his cabinet's handling of Hawaii fires or Ohio railroad disaster. Neither of them have high approval ratings.
I think a side-to-side comparison, in which Biden is old but coherent, whereas Trump is manifestly suffering from dementia, could be illuminating for a lot of people who haven't been paying attention to just how far downhill Trump has gone since 8 years ago.
Frank is just a delightful man and interviewee.
Jon made some grest counter points, but is anyone else confused about why an 84 year old man is trying to defend his job?
What does his age have to do with it?
Both candidates don't want RFK Jr. in the debates. He is a threat to both of them.
I liked him until I heard I’m his rhetoric dealing with Ukraine. Just spouting Russian propaganda.
Why waste our time with RFK, Jr debating. RFK, Jr has disgraced his family name with conspiracy theories and his anti-vax nonsense. Vaccinations saved his children and prevented them from the polio virus. Maybe his heroine drug addiction did affect his ability to critical think.
A quick Google search delivered that this guest is a couple years older then President Biden, so think about that, Americans, when you go vote in November. Older people can still be very vocal like this gentleman from the Commission and President Biden himself.
Yeah, the issue should not be age. That said, I don't like either candidate and I feel cheated that they're squashing RFK out because he'll make them look like fools.
7:20 "I don't think you're making the case for democracy you think you're making" 😂
Where my wife is from, each political party has a platform. A platform is a set of ideals and beliefs that are meant to be lived up to. The politicians are simply there as placeholders. They can perform the functions of meeting with constituents, fielding questions at events, giving speeches, etc., but their main function is voting the party line where any decision is being made. If you ever fail to vote the party line, which happens all the time here in America, you will be immediately removed from your position and someone else will take up your responsibilities. You will never, ever, hold a job in politics again if you "Vote your conscience". It is always anyone's best guess which way our own representatives will vote, but it is usually determined by who gives the largest campaign contribution. Democracy in America has just collapsed into legal bribery, and everyone just shrugs and accepts it. That is why there is so much indifference about the political process here, because the important issues are determined in the back room with the lobbyists over cognac and caviar. Your bumper sticker and 25 dollar donation does not mean jack.
It's too bad that Jon didn't ask him about the Debate Commission shenanigans in 2000... when they changed the rules on Ralph Nader in order to keep him out of the debates. (Spoilers: Nader made the minimum poll percentage that they required, then they arbitrarily raised the bar for him right before the 1st debate so he would be disqualified.) Yes, co-owned by the RNC & DNC for a reason.
Yup and they're doing the same thing ish to RFK. Slimy slippery politics. I have disregard for both of them.
@@elainehewitt6813, the CPD also requires debate participants to be on the ballot in enough states to reach 270 Electoral College votes. Will he reach that? It’s not looking like he will, and unlike the polling threshold, 270 is a reasonable requirement.

I'm glad Biden changed it up -- the audience is a big annoyance and should not be there. And the mute button should have been exercised in the last debates when Trump just ran his mouth -- this guy is just mad he's about to be Thanos Snap'd due to his failures.
"I'm glad Biden changed it up.." That never happened. Biden didn't change anything. Trump has been saying publicly numerous times in the last 6 months that he absolutely would not show up to a "commission debate", said they were rigged and Trump flatly ruled out any "commission debates". This is all public record. Biden simply took Trump at his word and proposed an alternative where Trump would agree to attend...and the media has utterly botched this basic fact across the board, including Stewart, sadly.💯🤷
@@DocRock71isn't Biden the one that said no audience though ? Surely that's a big change ?

why was there no question about if RFKJR should be included
To me, we could learn a lot from when debates were first televised. The opinions on “who won” the first televised debates differed wildly based on whether they were listened to on the radio or viewed. Now that they are almost exclusively viewed instead of heard (a more pure focus on the words and less focused on the theater of it all), the attention of all candidates has been put on theatrics, as Jon said. Many other cogent points made here.
Probably a 50/50 shot RFK, Jr. makes the CNN debate, given he's already gotten more than 15% in two polls that qualify
...only the brain worm.
DJT is already filling the role of conspiracy nut, not sure why we would need two.

DJT is already filling the tin-foil nutto slot, sorry.
2:32 That thing about sitting is the first, most ridiculous thing! What debate EVER had the combatants sitting? When? Where? Primary school members of the Forensics Team sit, and wait their turns… Is THAT what he means?
Obama and Romney were seated in their third debate
Debates are dumb to begin with, but the commission has been doing them badly for long enough. I don’t blame Biden for going around them.
The debates are the second to last stop on an impossibly long and depressing subway ride. The only reason the average person would get excited at all about them is because they signal that it's almost over.
Well done, Frank!
No point at all for these debates without RFK Jr, whether you support him or not.
He's so absolutely disingenuous though, in every TV appearance. He shouldn't be allowed out in public without a continuous fact-checker ("yes, you DID say that, here's the video").
Not to mention that "No point at all" is a ridiculous statement. At all? Really?
@@AllenKnutson well, I absolutely disagree with your opinion on RFK Jr. I don’t find him to be disingenuous at all. RFK Jr. is often slandered and taken out of context by the media and his political opponents that are defending the corporations that have them in their pockets. Also, like any normal human being, his stances on certain issues (often moot) have changed and evolved with age. RFK Jr. is a gentlemen, and willing to listen to people that disagree with him because he is a critical thinker. His claims aren’t merely pulled from out of nowhere, and he backs up what he says with studies, facts, and logic. He has been fighting toxic corporate powers his whole life, and successfully. This is critical thinking at its best and the basis of a healthy democracy. He’s an advocate for free speech, something you should be taking very seriously in this modern dangerous age of information. I also full heartedly agree with his stance on the Ukraine war and the military industrial complex. Half a million dead Ukrainians, who have fought a proxy war for us so the complex can make money from spreading NATO is absolutely appalling. I’m tired of American imperialism and the deaths that are resulting from it. These are the types of qualities I would like to see in any leader. He’s a breath of fresh air in a sea of disgusting corruption and unchecked crony capitalism and the only one that seems to care about restoring the middle class of America and our children’s futures. He’s the only one that addresses the health crisis in America. We are being poisoned by corporations profiting off of making food with toxic chemicals in them… just look at any other country what they are eating and the laws they have in place. I can go on and on and on. I don’t think RFK Jr is absolutely perfect, or any candidate or politician for that matter. But I do agree with most of what he has to say and I believe he’s proposing solutions to problems in America that have for too long now been ignored.
Jon is absolutely right. I don’t remember a thing that was said during the pence / Harris debate. I only remember the fly landing on pence’s head 😂

I totally agree that John should be a moderator he would do an awesome job. He would not care if Trump or Biden gets mad at him we need a few debates like this so both old men can get there point across and it would give both of them the opportunity to make the right choice in November
He wasn't gonna say clowns!! 😂
Important topic. The League of Women Voters sponsored presidential debates for a long time before this Commission claimed authority on the process in 1987. The Comm. is “privately funded.”
The League was already a non-partisan organization. I’d love to see Jon Stewart do more on the fuller story of what’s been happening with our US debate process.
